"The apocalyptic beach read that everyone needs." - Alix E. Harrow, Hugo Award-winning author on Not Your Average Hot Guy
In The Date from Hell , the sequel to Not Your Average Hot Guy , New York Times bestselling author Gwenda Bond brings the journey of Callie, Luke, and their friends to a wonderful close. This is another laugh out loud, action-packed romantic adventure you won’t want to miss.
After saving the world and stopping the apocalypse, Callie and Luke are looking forward to a quiet, romantic weekend together. When you’re human and dating the Prince of Hell, quiet moments are hard to come by. But their romantic weekend in Hell takes a turn when Lucifer tasks Callie and Luke with chasing a wayward soul around the world. If they can prove it’s possible to redeem a soul, Lucifer will allow the two of them to make some changes in Hell.
But this wayward soul, Sean, doesn’t have any interest in being redeemed. Instead, now that he’s back on Earth, he’s decided to take a leaf out of Callie and Luke’s book and wants to find the Holy Grail. Now Callie, Luke, and their friends―and enemies―must race Sean around the globe on a Grail quest and bring peace between Heaven and Hell before they can finally (maybe) get around to that date.

The Date from Hell by Gwenda Bond is the second book in the paranormal romantic comedy Not Your Average Hot Guy series. The story in this one is told by changing the point of view between the two lead characters, Callie and Luke. It’s also like most fantasy series and picks up the story and continues on from the first book so it is best to read the series in order.
The first book of the series introduced readers to Callie who was a recent college graduate who found that her degree wasn’t really worth a whole lot and had found herself working in her family’s escape room business instead of in her own career. Callie’s mother had been leaving town for a few days putting Callie in charge of the business when a strange group came in and tried to steal some of the props. The next thing Callie knew she was kidnapped by the group who seemed to be a satanic cult trying to raise a demon and the summoned one happened to be a really gorgeous guy, Luke.
The Not Your Average Hot Guy series is one that actually is quite funny and takes readers on a fun adventure with the characters. However, I would again after reading this second book warn readers that while the characters are supposed to be adult age it often feels like I’m reading about some teenagers. I came back knowing that fact this time as I did enjoy the first book enough to be curious to see where it went and this one did rate slightly higher for me at three and half stars going in prepared but it would have been nice to not feel as if they were so young too.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
The following ratings are out of 5: Romance: 💙🤎🖤❤️ Steam: 🔥 Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘 World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌍🌏 Character development: 😠😘🤓😉 Narrator(s): 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙 Narration Type: Dual Narration
The heroine:Callie - Callie is a college graduate who learned that her history major is hard to translate into an actual job, so she is still working at her mother’s escape room business. In between work days she goes with her boyfriend Luke Asteroth Morningstar to Hell where she has been going through the awesome library. She came up with an idea that she wants to implement that will change Hell, Heaven and the world.
The Hero:Luke - He is still trying to be himself while getting on the the good side of his father Lucifer, though he knows that is no easy feat. He wants to spend more time with Callie and helps her with her idea, though first they have to get approval from Lucifer.
The Story: Callie and Luke see that the people who are sent to have done vastly different things, like one eleven year old girl from the middle ages that is spending an eternity in Hell because she stole a bible from her church. Though it was deemed a mortal sin at the time, she just wanted to read it and see the pictures and girls were not allowed. So they think that some of the people that have been damned to hell, are redeemable and should get a second chance.
So they take the idea to Lucifer, who loves to create chaos, and he says they will try out the idea if Callie and Luke can redeem a certain sinner named Sean within 72 hours. He throws another wrench in their plans when he takes Lukes wings and powers and gives them to Callie for that time. Luke thinks he legendary charm is part of him, but soon finds out that was part of his powers.
This book is told in multiple points of view via dual narration. Narrated by Graham Halstead and Karissa Vacker. Graham Halstead did the chapters in Lukes point of view, Karissa Vacker did those chapters in Callie’s point of view. The narration was terrific and I loved Not Your Average Hot Guy and this story was really good as well. There is a mystery about who Sean was when he was alive, how he can travel so fast and they end up on a quest to find the holy grail.
This is a Paranormal Romance, and this is the second book in the Not Your Average Hot Guy series. I have read and reviewed the first book in this series before picking up this book. I do think that you should read the first book before reading this book because there is a lot of information in the first book that ties into this book. I do not read a lot of Paranormal Romance book, so please keep that in mind. I picked up the first book thinking it was just a romance not knowing it was a Paranormal Romance. I really enjoyed it, so I had to keeping reading this series. I love the characters and the action/drama in this book. The twisted at the ending I really did not see coming. There is more of this book that takes place in Hell, and I enjoyed the characters that lives in Hell. This book honestly gives me a feel of Phoebe and Cole from Charmed. I just think this book was a fun read and a cute take on good and evil. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (St. Martin's Griffin) or author (Gwenda Bond) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.
Initially I wasn't sure if this would live up to the first book, and I figured it would be more of a three star read, but as the book went on it climbed up to four. So, the same as I rated book one.
I enjoyed following Luke and Callie on yet another hellish adventure, and I loved the inclusion of Sean in this one, he grew on me instantly.
The romance developed, although not as much as I hoped it would, but they still make a cute couple. I'd love to read even more books featuring them in the future.
This was due back at the library in 3 days, and I realized I didn't care if I finished it or not which signals to me I'm not invested in the book. I wanted the story to me more but it just fell flat. It wasn't as interesting or exciting as the premise would indicate, and I wasn't invested in the action or the romance. I might return to it later, maybe I didn't enjoy it because I'm not in the mood for it, but for now it's a quiet DNF.
Considering that I have never read the first book in this series I had a really good time reading it. Glenda Bond did a superb job of giving a recap about the adventures of Callie and Luke in the first book in the series so I didn’t feel really out of the loop or confused about what was going on as I settled into the world of this book. Callie and Luke go on a fun adventure of a date to save a wayward soul name Sean so that Lucifer himself will have proof that souls can be redeemed and changes can be made to Hell. The Date from Hell was a fun and easy read filled with adventure and mishaps.
Thank you St. Martin's Press, St. Martin's Griffin, and NetGalley for giving me access to an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
*ARC kindly provided via NetGalley by St. Martin’s Press in exchange for an honest review.
The Date from Hell by Gwenda Bond is the sequel to Not Your Average Hot Guy, a paranormal duology of novels that are centered around the story of Callie, a human that works in the escape room business, and Luke, the prince of Hell. In this second installment we get to witness Callie and Luke already in a relationship while they manage the existence of both of their worlds.
Since Callie is travelling back and forth between Earth and Hell, she starts to question the laws of Hell and whether some of the souls have been sent to damnation unfairly. For this, Callie has an idea that wants to set in motion with the help of Luke, but first they must go through Lucifer, who gives them another challenge in order to complete the plan that they have in mind.
I liked this book much better than the first, and I think that the elements that helped with this was the writing style and that the plot involved more action and introduced more characters.
However, I still have a problem with this book being advertised as a romance when it is clearly more centered around the supernatural adventurous plot than the development of the main characters’ relationship. Apart from that it was an entertaining book that had many of the beloved elements of a fantasy book!
I was really looking forward to the first book in this series and was ultimately disappointed. Still, I was looking forward to picking up the second book, and other folks had let me know they'd heard it worked better than the first. I'm very happy to confirm those rumors!
Callie and Luke are dancing around taking the next steps in their relationship, spending time in the mortal realm and in Hell. It's on one of her trips to Hell that Callie realizes some of the people doomed to life in fiery pits or in eternal servitude or whatever might deserve a second chance. Lucius decides to grant this -- if Callie and Luke can prove a soul of his choosing is redeemable. Suddenly, the two of them are spending what was meant to be a quiet weekend in chasing a wayward Hell-escapee who looks like he should be a Hemsworth brother all over Europe on a Grail quest. The consequences of failure could be dire: not just for the souls they're trying to redeem, but for their relationship, and the human world at large.
Some of my biggest issues with the first book are resolved or at least improved upon here: Callie is a fully-fleshed out person with thoughts besides trivia, and the writing style is much more consistent throughout. Since there's an external guide for the plot (Arthurian myth), there's fewer things dangling here and there, which means there's not a solution to all the woes that appears at 93% out of nowhere, too.
Still, this series reads far more YA to me than adult romance. A huge element of the plot is Luke not feeling worthy of Callie's love, but there's only cursory exploration given to why he might feel like this. It's what I'm going to call "cracked-door romance": not closed-door, but nothing more than an illusion at intent and a "yes, that was good" at the end. Combining some underdeveloped angst with low steam just really feels oriented towards a younger crowd.
There's no doubt that this book is a much neater product than its predecessor, and I encourage people who waffled on the first one to see if this works better for them.
Thank you to St. Martin's and NetGalley for the ARC!
A super fun continuation of this new adult, dual perspective paranormal romance series. In this book Callie and Luke get tasked by the Devil (Luke's dad) with saving a soul in exchange for a favor. Full of adventure, power swapping, more Escape room adventures, a great cast of secondary characters and new found family. I really enjoy these characters and can't wait to see what happens in the next book! Much thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my advance review copy!! This was also great on audio narrated by Karissa Vacker and Graham Halstead.
CW: includes some steamy open door scenes (best suited for older YA readers)
The sequel to NOT YOUR AVERAGE HOT GUY, this book has a special place in my heart because I wrote it during the pandemic. This book globe hops even more than the first one, and if you want to know why--that's it. I desperately longed to visit other places, so I did in fiction. And I'm so grateful I got to continue Luke and Callie's story, and grapple with how they could make a real life together. I hope you enjoy this book, and also go add Mr. & Mrs. Witch to your TBRs, coming in early 2023, in an entirely new magical rom-com world.
this book is both unnecessary and 100 pages too long. luke's only personality traits are daddy issues and i love my girlfriend. callie has the energy of someone who texts with asterisks.
Callie is like us who like to walk in a lovely library like it will take our breath away. And of course we loved the smell of old books or even the new ones, as long as it was a book. Callie really cared about her brother Jared, her best friend Mag and of course the most important is her dog Bosch. Callie doesn’t want to disappoint her mother because she was being busy doing some task from hell at the same time her normal life in earth too.
Luke always prevent the mistakes. He doesn’t want Callie to leave him when he failed. He’s doing everything he can do to protect and support Callie for what she wants and what she plans.
Lucifer, Luke’s father. From the beginning of the book “Not Your Average Hot Guy” he was giving Luke a hard time, giving him a hard task. But in book 2 Lucifer gave him and Callie the most hardest task before they can get what they want. And his mother Lilith, she was so helpful from the beginning of the book. She really likes Callie too.
Overall, I really loved this book. It was a fun read and all. I haven’t read fantasy for so long because my brain can’t take it 😂 I think I just need some romance in this kind of genre.
Y a Luke, sos mi nuevo amor literario✨😍
I will be honest I did not originally know that this book was the sequel to another rom com book but with titles like Not Your Average Hot Guy and The Date From Hell how could I not read the first book then this one. I am obsessed with this series that mixes romance, humor, hell, and satanic cults. While I love both books this is a review for the Date From Hell (already my top book title of 2022).
Escape room worker Callie and summoned demon Luke stopped the end of the world but what's next for our favorite paranormal couple. All Callie and Luke want is a quiet romantic weekend but when they have the opportunity to make some changes to hell they go on a fun and action packed journey. This book mixed the fun of Supernatural, Charmed, and Beach Read in the most perfect way.
These books are so unique and so fun and I definitely recommend if your looking for something a little different from your rom coms.
Thanks to St Martins and NetGalley for my early ARC for an honest review.
I'm really liking this series with its setting and characters. I read the first one and liked it, and this one is a continuation of the story.
Callie and Luke are looking to spending more time together but instead have to go on a quest trying to redeem a lost soul. They have friends to aid them and enemies to foil them, and literally go all over the world in trying to succeed in time. It has funny moments, tender moments, and relationships that grow closer.
I'm looking forward to book 3.
I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.
Not as good as the first one, to me, but I still enjoyed it! Sometimes I get annoyed with the big decision to say I LOVE YOU, so mostly a personal preference. If that's your jam, then I think this book would be a wonderful read for you.
I listened to this book and the guy who voices Nick cracks me up when he reads for Callie or Jared, that fake southern twang is insane lol.
First let me say that typically I am not a fan of sequels or Part 2 of anything, movies or books alike. I have found that it is typically very hard to keep the same tone or pace or chemistry throughout continuing story line. But I am super happy to report that Gwenda Bond did just that in her follow up to "Not Your Average Hot Guy" with her upcoming release "The Date from Hell."
The story of Callie, a truly "good" person who works in the family's escape room business in Lexington KY (a huge point in her favor in my book!) and her boyfriend Luke, the literal prince of hell continues in this novel as they navigate their new relationship and the contraints their backgrounds put upon them. We get the entire cast of characters we loved from the first book in this one as well, with the special addition of Sean, a new denizen of Hell we get to meet and discover what his story means to both Callie and Luke and their entire relationship.
This novel is fun, fast-paced and quirky - a fast read that you'll truly enjoy!
Thank you to St. Martin's Press for the advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
3.5⭐ [I received a digital arc from Netgalley for an honest review] I feel like I might finally be about to find a purpose in life. Beyond dating hell's most eligible bachelor.
The Date from Hell is the sequel to Not Your Average Hot Guy by Gwenda Bond. It picks back up with our leading characters and the challenges that Callie is facing dating the prince of Hell. Callie wants to make changes to the underworld by offering souls a second chance at being good. Lucifer agrees to give her a trial run to prove her idea can be successful. However, he's made it so they have very little chance of succeeding. He's also trying to break up Callie and Luke to force Luke to take his rightful place as his heir. No matter how different our world, no matter the obstacles we face, no matter what father wants: We belong together.
This is a seamless sequel, the story, and characters all feel cohesive from book 1. In this one, there's a lot of stress on the differences between Callie and Luke and what kind of future they could have together. Bonus, this is also slightly steamier than the first because Luke and Callie take their relationship to the next level and there's an open door intimate scene.
Overall, The Date from Hell was another fun adventure following Callie and Luke, along with family and unlikely allies, go on a quest against the clock for the legendary holy Grail.
The Date From Hell is a fun-filled, spirited tale that takes us back into the life of Luke and Callie as they try to head out on a date that unfortunately gets a little sidetracked when they make a deal with the devil, they agree to prove that damaged souls deserve a second chance, and they somehow end up on a hunt for the holy grail.
The writing is witty and smooth. The characters are spunky, spontaneous, and clever. And the plot is a playful tale full of family, friendship, desire, adventure, intrigue, humorous hijinks, hilarious mishaps, special abilities, and love.
Overall, The Date From Hell is a comical, light, action-packed tale by Bond that I enjoyed even more than the first novel in the series, Not Your Average Hot Guy, and is the perfect way to wrap up this duology which guarantees hell will never be quite the same.
Thank you to SMP Romance – St. Martin’s Press for gifting me a copy in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Griffin for sending me this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
The Date From Hell is the second book in the paranormal romance series Not Your Average Hot Guy. If you're looking for a fun, action-packed adventure that will keep you laughing you have to pick up this duology.
I feel like it would be so much fun to be friends with Callie and Luke. Callie is so relatable because of her love for books and extravagant libraries. Luke seems kind of cocky and charming but also has a huge soft spot for people he cares about. My favorite part of this series has to be the characters and the way they banter with each other and work together; it's just so much fun!
You also get some Hell politics which was really interesting while also learning about the balance between Heaven and Hell in this world. The world-building was a nice addition to the relationship elements of the story and I loved learning more and more about it. On top of that, there were a few plot twists that really surprised me. Typically, I am relatively good and figuring out the plot twists before they happen but I was completely caught off guard more than once.
If you enjoyed Not Your Average Hot Guy you have to pick up The Date From Hell because it has the same feeling and atmosphere as the first book but it's even better. This book was the closure I needed for Callie and Luke's story and I definitely enjoyed it.
If you're looking for a light, fun action-adventure story, then this is the duology for you!
After saving the world in Not Your Average Hot Guy, Callie and Luke just want to have a nice date, but when your the prince of hell and your dear old dad is Lucifer, date nights don't really go according to plan. Instead, Luke and Callie find themselves chasing after the wayward soul, Sean, that they've been tasked with reforming. When old friends, foes, and the Holy Grail are thrown into the mix, our main duo may find that having a normal date is not easy.
All in all, this book is a fun one with hijinks and humor galore (there's also some not-so-fun moments but hey that's life). I really like how Luke and Callie's relationship has grown since book 1 - also it was kind of nice seeing them be a power couple to be reckoned with. Also the side characters are as great as ever and the addition of Sean to the mix was fun!
If you liked the first one, you really need to grab this one!
Special thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Griffin for the eARC! I really appreciate it!
This is the follow up to “Not Your Average Hot Guy”, where Callie finds a portal to Hell and ends up dating the Devil’s son Luke. This time, they need to redeem a soul in order to make some changes in Hell’s policies. Unfortunately, Lucifer has picked the most unredeemable soul out there, and our couple is having a hard time.
I liked the romance between them, but it bothers me that Callie is supposedly good and Christian and now dates Luke. Along those lines, the book “jumped the shark” at the end in an unbelievable way. You must suspend belief to get into these books but it went too far for me. 3.5 stars.
Blurb: “After saving the world and stopping the apocalypse, Callie and Luke are looking forward to a quiet, romantic weekend together. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
So, this one is National Treasure (treasure hunt wise), Indiana Jones: The Last Crusade with King Arthur and the Round Table and every legend in between. And that’s basically all the information you’ll need. 👀
I was right, I definitely enjoyed book 2 over book 1. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed book 1 but this one? OMG Right up my ally. Mainly because secretly I’m a history freak and love anything myth and legend related plus finding out new or random facts about centuries old mysteries. Which now that I think about it, is very similar to our protagonist. I think I just had en epiphany moment..🫣
ANYWHO! This one definitely surprised me. I was not expecting anything and everything that happened in this book. Again, I can’t really get into it because I will literally spoil everything and I think everyone should enjoy this on their own. It really is something else.
Luke and Callie were so disgustingly sweet I swear I got a cavity. This was a whirlwind for sure. They don’t let you take a minute, she is just full of surprises, one plot twist after another. Every twist and turn. I legit contemplated throwing the book against the wall. Even my mom had to ask every now and then what was wrong because I was actually screaming and grunting of frustration. AAGH!
The Date from Hell is a fun and romantic YA read. It's the second book in Gwenda Bond's 'Not Your Average Hot Guy' series and my favorite!
In this book, it picks up with Callie and Luke trying to have a normal, or as normal as possible, date night. Of course, Hell and Lucifer have other plans. They are tasked with finding the Holy Grail to redeem a wayward soul, Sean.
Callie and Luke are tested both physically and emotionally throughout this whole journey. I loved that even through the hard times, their love shines bright! Readers can expect witty banter, romance, and adventure.
I give The Date from Hell 4 stars. It is adventurous and captivating. I felt like it is the best in the series. Luke and Callie's relationship is charming and fun to read about!
