I generally like Clement's writings (I think his THE ROOTS OF CHRISTIAN MYSTICISM is perhaps my favorite Christian, Orthodox and theological book). This work is a study of Andrew of Crete's Canon of Repentance. Clement acknowledges the Canon is purely monastic spirituality and a monastic view of repentance. Perhaps because this is the Paschal season, I was less than enamored with the book or perhaps because I can only take dark monastic spirituality in small doses. In any case, there is no doubt in my mind that Clement has attempted to fathom the depths of the Canon and its idea of monastic repentance for those who are interested in such things. My ratings are purely my immediate reaction to the book and my heart wasn't into this read.
A deep, thoughtful, challenging essay on the Great Cannon of St Andrew of Crete. Not a particularly easy read, but very rich with Orthodox Christian Theology and understanding.
