Helen Luna never gave much thought to Earth. Sure, she was born there, but she lived most of her life on Rohva, far away from the dead planet her parents once called home. Helen never thought she would ever have to return until she accepted an internship at Zoo West, Earth’s last zoo and final boundary before mass extinction. From the cryptic painting on her dormroom’s wall to the lost journal she finds under her bed, Helen knows there is more to Zoo West than a witty raven named Mayhem and the zoo’s favorite elephant, Gladys. There is a secret hidden within the zoo and the closer Helen gets to it, the more unwilling she is to believe the truth.
I loved this book - a really interesting concept with lots of really interesting elements. As a big zoo lover I was happy, as this read as a love letter to zoos, which is a really refreshing perspective to see - usually it's the opposite view that gets the attention!
I managed to guess some of the plot before it happened but that didn't stop me from feeling invested in the storyline and I still felt pangs of emotional at certain times. The only thing I wanted and didn't get was more - more of the zoo, more of the backstory, more of the world building - but that's not a problem, because what I did get was so good!
