Emily's New Everything

Rate this book
Overworked and underappreciated Emily Esposito thinks wrestling her young son Dante into his Halloween costume is her biggest worry-until her husband shows up with his new girlfriend and tells her their marriage is over. Emily's waitressing job is suddenly in jeopardy when the diner is put on the market, and she anxiously wonders how she will pay her half of the mortgage. If that's not enough, the dates she tentatively embarks on don't turn out quite as well as she expected, and the support she seeks from her mother is met with acute disapproval.

Emily resolves to put three-year-old Dante first. Her sister Clara and best friend Michelle are her greatest cheerleaders while she works desperately to carve out a sunnier future for herself and her son. In her heart, Emily never stops dreaming of a man to grow old with and a true love to call her own.

In a Nutshell: Mixed feelings. The intent in the blurb and the content in the book don’t seem to match. It’s not a bad book but I expected more.

Story:
Emily Esposito, a young waitress, is thrown into emotional turmoil after her husband Tyler announces that he is in love with someone else and moving out of their home. Emily knows that her marriage has long been struggling but she still can’t accept the suddenness of his decision. Now all she wants to do is to make sure her three year old son Dante isn’t troubled by this drastic change. How will Emily adjust to the “new everything” around her? Read and find out.
The story is narrated in the first person perspective of Emily.

Where the book worked for me:
💖 The story has some cute and funny moments.

💖 Dante is adorable. A couple of the secondary characters such as Clara, Sophia and Michelle also make a mark.

💖 It is a quick read.

💖 For the first time, I saw a book about a waitress who was happy with her job and wanted to continue working as one rather than getting a miracle break and changing over the career almost overnight. This was an unusual but nice experience.

💖 No steam. All clean. (Romance, I mean.)

💖 The cover is really sweet.

Where the book could have worked better for me:
💔 The blurb and Emily’s declarations, both make it clear that Emily’s priority is going to be her son. But to be honest, she seems more obsessed with getting her dating life back on track (after a few months of the above incident). Her definition of “priority” didn’t match mine.

💔 The supposed basis of Emily’s character as per the blurb is that she is highly anxious, overworked and underappreciated. I thought this will immediately endear me to Emily. But I found her quite shallow and judgemental. She doesn’t shy away from pointing fingers at anyone and even pulling off rude pranks but can't stand the same happening to her. As I couldn’t connect with the character who was narrating the story to me, there went my enjoyment of the book.

💔 As Emily herself is so judgemental, I hope I can be a bit judgemental too. Emily needs to rethink her (and Dante’s) food intake! So much of fried food and junk food! Throughout the book, the only mention I found of anything healthy was one instance of carrot sticks. The rest was all deep-fried junk or desserts. C’mon, put Dante first! Eat healthy, Emily!

💔 Some parts of the plot didn’t make fiscal sense. Like Emily is supposed to be a waitress and not making enough in tips. She's very worried about the monetary situation after Tyler moves out. Yet, she seems to be spending money like water – umpteen new books on divorce and single parenting (No local library, I guess!), umpteen takeaways, makeup and makeovers, bubble baths… I felt more panicky about her financial condition than she seemed to be!

(I just realised that what I thought was four distinct negative points is essentially just one point – I hated Emily.)

💔 The whole plot doesn’t move in a smooth flow but is very episodic. There seems to be a series of unfortunate events and Emily has to face them. When one is sorted, the next issue comes knocking at her door. And so on till the end. It becomes quite repetitive after a while.

💔 The ending (where everything reaches the HEA stage) is too rushed.

💔 The men in the story aren’t developed well at all. They are all ‘revolving door’ characters, who walk in and out as per the need of the plot. The female characters, other than the ones I mentioned earlier, are quite unidimensional.

I guess if I had connected with Emily at least a little, I would have enjoyed this book a lot more. But she was too shallow, short-sighted and squandering for my liking. Still, it is a decent story, not a typical romcom, and goes by quickly. Can be picked up when you are looking for a light read.

3.25 stars.

My thanks to author Elizabeth Allison and BookSirens for the DRC of “Emily's New Everything”. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

I was given the opportunity to read and review this book by the author, Elizabeth Allison. It’s not the character age I usually read but I did enjoy the story.
Emily is a newly separated single mom who is finding her way in the new life direction that she didn’t expect to be taking. She approaches each new complication with the assistance of three great friends who encourage her to look at the positives instead of focusing on the negatives and a bit of humour along the way. The ending is a classic “happily ever after” and ties everything up nicely. The only negative I couldn’t get passed is the amount of money it seems Emily spends but claims to not have a lot of it.
This is an easy, nicely-paced read that is perfect for a relaxing day. If you’re looking for a book like that then this is one I recommend you get!

Emily's new everything, from Elisabeth Allison, follows a year or so of Emily's life, a recently divorced mum (the book starts when Emily's husband tells her that he's leaving her for her friend). Emily was a likeable main character, and Dante, Emily's son, was so cute! What I loved about the book were Emily's friends, always being there for her.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

What an enjoyable read. I loved entering Emily's world full of high points and pitfalls. The story involves all kinds of relationships from colleagues to friends and family. The author presents Emily with different challenges which she embraces with fury, good grace or laughter. Emily is such a great character!

Hard-working waitress, wife and mother Emily Esposito wonders why her marriage seems to be drifting towards the rocks until the day her husband arrives home late from work – with another woman.
Author Elizabeth Allison has a knack for setting up and playing out just such scenes from the end of a marriage while taking us along on this poignant, sometimes funny, sometimes heart-tugging, but always engaging journey of a young newly single mother as she finds her way in the world, step by wobbly step.

Emily Esposito is a hard-working young woman. Her life isn’t perfect but it’s hers, until it isn’t. When her husband walks out on her, her world crumbles around her.

Luckily for Emily, she has awesome pals who support and encourage her to pick up the pieces and slowly rebuild a life for her and her young son Dante. As in most things, it’s two steps forward one step back as Emily is beset by problems with her parents, friends, and caring for her child.

This heart-warming story will make you laugh and cheer for Emily, smile at her antics and breath a sigh of relief at its satisfying ending.

Was I hooked by that book? Yes, it's a moving story about surviving heartbreak. I was rooting for Emily the entire time.

Everything around Emily is falling apart. Her husband is leaving her for another woman, the diner where she works might close, and she's not sure she'll be able to keep her house. The only thing that hasn't changed, is her son, Dante. Her love and devotion for him are about the only things moving her forward.

It was heartbreaking to experience that moment when Emily's world imploded. The writing clearly described Emily's reactions and feelings and it would be impossible not to feel those things with her.

Emily managed to keep a fairly clear head throughout everything that happened to her. She had wonderful support from her sister and best friend. She always put Dante first and never let him see any of the animosity she felt towards Tyler and Amy. In fact, she was civil with them as well, except for a few moments where she indulged in her vengeful thoughts about Amy. Those were fun instances and came at just the right time to provide a break in all the seriousness. Emily is a very relatable character.

The plot moved at a good pace. We see Emily try her hand at dating again, coming to terms with all the changes in her life, and remaking herself. Overall, I really enjoyed following Emily's story and I was very invested in the outcome.

Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I rarely read such books, but this one was cute, heartwarming and lovely.

The plot actually covers some quiet serious topics such as divorce and the struggles of a single mom. But by including some humor, relatable events and well thought of characters; the author has managed to convert this into a light and fun read.

At no point do you feel burdened by Emily’s struggles, rather you find yourself cheering her on. The highlights of the book for me, was the way Emily’s friends rallied around her in support all the time as well as Emily’s positive attitude (which we all need right now!) in spite of having such a messy life.

Overall, this is a sweet and easy read, which leaves a smile in your face once you’re finished reading!

A big thank you to the author Elizabeth Allison for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.

Emily is living every wife and mother’s worst nightmare. She’s reeling from yet another negative pregnancy test when her husband brings his girlfriend home to announce that their marriage is over and he’s there to collect his things. Not even a night with her best friends can dull the sting of the realization her family life is never going to be the same again.

As she tries to navigate this new world and figure out how to raise her son as a single mom, Emily reconnects with someone from her past. The idea of romance after being burned is hard to imagine, though she has trouble staying away from the one man who offers her unconditional support. Life is messy, confusing, and often very hard. But Emily’s determined to make the most of it, no matter how difficult.

The writing in this book was hilarious at times and heart wrenching in others. The storyline was completely believable, making it easy to fall into the novel and really feel for Emily. The characters were perfectly imperfect, just like their lives. It’s something I really enjoy in my romances and look for when finding new books.

Really though, I loved Emily and her messy life. Watching her hit her lowest lows and rise from the ashes was such a fun ride. You really rooted for her to come out on top…and maybe key her ex’s car. But she’s much more mature than I would be! Fans of stories with a dash of romance, a lot of humor, and some real feelings will definitely enjoy Emily’s New Everything.

Emily is a girl going through the motions of friendship, family, divorce and all whilst raising her son Dante.
Firstly before you read this book... if you like Dr Pepper and haven’t had it in a while... it’ll most definitely get you craving it.
This book had me sucked in, with its small chapters it got me so excited to complete a different part of Emily’s life.
Without giving too much away if you’ve ever been married and it didn’t work out, all whilst raising a child. You’ll really be able to relate. The book completely got me to identify my flaws and my strengths.
It’s so refreshing reading about such a strong woman who isn’t afraid to really put herself back out there and speak the much needed truths that everyone hides away from.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book it made me laugh, cry and feel things I haven’t felt for such a long time ❤️

This was a super cute book that I read on my road trip today. Got so involved I didn’t even take rest stops lol
Emily finds out her husband is leaving her and she has to adjust to a new normal with her son, which she starts to do until she finds out he’s now with one of her friends. Her friends rally around her as she tries online dating and helping with childcare while she works but her parents (particularly her mother) aren’t especially supportive of her and she has to work on that relationship as well.
It was an easy read even though it was a kind of tough subject. My only critique would be that the cover doesn’t do the story justice. It seems too simple for the story it represents.

First of all, I would like to thank the author for sending me a free copy of her book in exchange for an honest review.

I am not usually one for romance books, as I like to have romance intertwined within the main story line, but the idea of a newly-single mother, trying to balance her new life and trying to find somebody to share her time with intrigued me, as it was clear that Emily’s main priority was not romance, but her child, her job and her family. I thoroughly enjoyed the hardships Emily had to conquer, as they made the book seem more realistic, alongside the friendships and support she had from some of the people around her, including her sister.

In all honesty, I was quite nervous going into the book, as I was unsure if I would like it, as romance is not my go-to genre, and I didn’t want to rate it down on what I thought were unfair terms. Surprise surprise, I really really enjoyed the book and sped through it as a result.

I was also unsure of what to expect of the writing style, but the book is written beautifully, with in-your-face honesty, the type of banter you are likely to have with friends and a wholesome story to cheer up your day. The story is not supposed to represent perfection or how to be the best parent, it simply shows the reality of change, break ups and hardships.

Overall, I rate this book 3.75 stars out of 5.

A new writer to me, but the author has firmly secured a place as 'one to watch out for' in the future. I thoroughly enjoyed this heartwarming story of a young single mum (and her adorable son, Dante) struggling to cope with work, parenting demands, friendships and — most of all — the vagaries of love and life.
When we first meet Emily, she's married, but the rug is soon pulled from under her feet. As the book unfolds, we meet her closest allies, cheer her on when she dates again (if not always successfully) and accompany her on a journey of self-discovery.
I loved the dashes of dark humour, such as when Emily carries out a series of 'pranks' designed to irritate her errant ex-husband.
There are also poignant moments which will be achingly familiar to many.
Easter would be another first – the first Easter without Tyler. Just like Christmas had been a first, and Valentine's Day and soon the summer. I couldn't wait for the day after Halloween when nothing on the calendar would be the 'first' of anything.
All in all, I'd describe Emily's New Everything as the perfect pick-me-up in these difficult times. Warm, witty and well-written, it's a book filled with hope and the possibility of new beginnings when the going gets tough.

Emily’s New Everything by Elizabeth Allison is a thoroughly enjoyable read!
The characters are like old pals; comfortable, relatable, and just the right amount of angst. Women from all walks do life will relate to Emily and her story. If you’re a single mom, if you’re divorced, if you’re a woman, or if you only know a single mom—read this book.
The author’s writing style is engaging and fun, and honestly, I was sad when it was over.

This is Emily's novel of her life after her husband Tyler leaves her for someone else. It's not only about being angry and having a grudge but how she's moving on with her three year old son despite the challanges thrown at her.

The story does not solely revolve around her life in a romnatic sense. Its about how life goes on despite what you're going through, how bad times may be waiting in line to happen to you, how burderns and responsibilities increase and how you still think about your friends and family no matter how bad or messy your life is.

Emily has got supportive friends but she also has a snake friend, yupp, we officially hate Grace-Ann. Her mother always taunts or disapproves of whatever she does and her father only tries to keep peace but her sister is amazing.

To be honest, Liam had won but the author very smartly brought James back into the game.

I enjoyed reading Emily's emotions and her dates which weren't always the best. Her 6 months journey wasn't easy but she made the best of it with support.

Sometimes I felt like she had money as she did spent a lot. James honestly we knew was the end goal but I expected something more between the two... also I wanted to know what was in the letter!

Overall a good, easy read with sometimes funny, sometimes sad, will make you smile and if you're emotional like me then you'll leak a few tears in the beginning too.

It’s Halloween night, and Emily is getting ready to take her son, Dante, out trick-or-treating. But while he’s still napping, Emily gets the trick: her husband, Tyler, rings the doorbell instead of just walking in, and when Emily opens the door, he’s standing there with the woman he’s leaving her for this very evening, that bitch Amy Ballantyne.

Although Emily knew things weren’t perfect with Tyler, she had no clue he was leaving and is determined to conceal that fact from her old-fashioned Italian family, especially her cold and judgmental mother. The only people she tells are her closest friends, Michelle and Grace-Ann, although word spreads quickly.

However, not long after her mother tells her what a failure and disappointment she is -- “It seems to me that this whole mess you find yourself in right now is just par for the course, Emily” -- her father’s fractured ankle turns into a life-or-death saga, and her crazy new life is overwhelmed by family drama. When they emerge on the other side, her parents have changed so substantially that Emily and her sister Clara could have never imagined such a metamorphosis.

And throughout all this, even as she steps out on a few tentative dates, she doesn’t pay attention to the someone behind the scenes, always quietly present in her hour of need.

Elizabeth Allison has crafted a superb story of surviving betrayal to demonstrate how even the most dire circumstances can lead to a sunny new beginning.

Summary in a few words: A soon-to-be single mom, how she finds her way back to happiness, The mountains she climbs along the way, and when she stumbles into love.

Heat rating 2/5

The book was so relatable, I really connected to the heartbreak and deceit Emily went through with her husband. Emily was also such a strong woman, raising her child alone while navigating her way through single life. This story started out very strong with so many twists and turns! I would have loved it even more if we got to hear a little more about the romance between her and the main love interest. While it was a closed-door romance but I still believed and felt the love she had on her dates. I also loved that the main love interest was such a nice guy, no alpha male nonsense here! If you have not read anything by Elizabeth Allison try this book! You can really tell she has so much skill for making characters relatable and conveying emotion throughout the book.

Overall, it was a cute read that was very relatable and realistic! I would recommend this book to anyone who likes love stories that could really happen in real life.

Emily's breakup just about gave me PTSD. It hit way too close to home. I had to take a moment before continuing with the story. It was way too real and sad. So, I was really looking forward to seeing her get her HEA. It took her 57 chapters of angst to get that HEA.

This story is about Emily's journey and about all the friends around her that helped her get her groove back after the awful breakup. Emily is a hard-working waitress and a supermom to her three year old son. It was sweet to see how she kept her focus on his well-being all the time. She really had her act together at work and as a mom. However, when it came to her romantic life, the girl was a basket case. Thankfully she had Michelle, her best friend, and Clara, her sister, to help her navigate her messy romantic life. It took her forever and a bunch of dates to finally figure out how to get that HEA.

I took away a star because I was ready for this story to end by chapter 40 and I really would have liked to see James' character developed more fully. He was almost a footnote in this extremely long, 57 chapter book.

So, this is my read of yesterday.

I absolutely loved this book.
The story was detailed and just the right pace to constantly leave you needing more and not wanting to put the book down.

I felt all of Emily’s emotions throughout the book. She’s goes through different motions of divorce, friendship and family all whilst raising her gorgeous 3 year old son Dante.
And she does it well might I add.

Elizabeth Allison did an awesome job at making this a journey of many feelings that you as the reader experience whilst reading it.

This book really dug its claws into me from the first page with its battles of friendship and love whilst Emily is trying to find her feet in the world to support herself and Dante.

This book really does show you that you can find strength even in the most unexpected of places!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can’t wait for more!!

The way the book starts you think this would be a woman's alone journey to recovering but it was so much more. It was about motherhood, female friendship, dysfunctional family and none of it felt pretentious. The episodes where Emily broke down really got me down with her too. Not because life was unfair because she was going on and such a graceful way she took everything in stride. Whether it was her job,her son , the community she lived in. I was so happy that writer showed how strong women can also lose it and recover from it taking up the accountability for what they did and not blaming it on the circumstances in her life. This took a long time for me to finish but it was worth it. The end was cheesy but then women deserve cheesy happy endings especially if you are surrounded by people who bring down your whole life apart and leaves you alone to pick them up. Emily’s New Everything is a delightful; story that rings true in today’s world. The complications and frustrations of a single mother are realistically and artfully presented. I especially enjoyed watching how the character’s relationships developed in large part because of the struggles she works to overcome.. Emily’s new experiences, although often difficult, empower her spirit to become strong and resilient. It is rare to find a novel written in the first person that resonates so well with the reader. I connected completely to the new everyday experiences Emily faced because they were authenticity portrayed. Elizabeth Allison has a unique way of interjecting humor into everyday situations sprinkling sunshine through the clouds of life. Emily’s story is a poignant reminder that life’s challenge can be faced and overcome with courage, determination and lots of laughter.

This book starts out a bit slow and depressing. Emily’s life is a series of disasters that she bravely faces. The characters are largely unlikeable, especially her mother, the ex-husband and his girlfriend Amy, and her former best friend since kindergarten Grace Ann. Emily is a doormat in the beginning but has grown a spine by the end of the book. On the good side, the author’s descriptions of Emily’s dates are very entertaining and her friend Michelle, sister, and babysitter Sophia are steadfast friends and always there when she needs them. Overall, I enjoyed Emily’s story and was really happy when things started to get better for her.

Emily's New Everything is about a young mother who, in many ways, has to start over again when her husband leaves her. Allison does a great job of incorporating everything from the mundane challenges of finding a baby sitter and awkward first dates to the more traumatizing issues of having a family member go through a health crisis while Emily adjusts to being a single parent. During the story we get to see Emily's relationships evolve in both positive and negative ways as things change in her life, and it's nice to read about something reflective of all of us as our lives change. While the plotting is good there are parts where the dialogue feels awkward and the mundane details are a little excessive. I also feel like it would have read a little better if there weren't so many brand names and franchise stores and restaurants mentioned - this at a point got distracting to me. It's a good story, with a happy ending, and a good effort early in Allison's writing career. I appreciate her giving me the opportunity to read and review her story.

Wow! I loved this story! It is well written, and Emily is so likable, I could not put this book down.
♥️
Emily’s world gets rocked when her husband leaves her. As she works through anger and grief, she clings to the dream that he will return. When time passes and he doesn’t return, she starts to grasp her new reality. Emily feels like her whole world is falling apart, then she realizes it’s never just one thing that happens and her life continues to tumble out of control.
Emily navigates her changing landscape while keeping her son as her number one focus. Emily is brave and triumphant; even when she’s losing her mind she still puts on a smile for her son.
♥️
This book made me smile, made me frown, and made me laugh out loud at the witty writing.

Wow! I can honestly say, I loved this book! It’s such an easy read. The characters compliment each other well and are relatable. The chapters weren’t too long or too short, which I love. This has to be one of the best romance books I’ve read in a while!
.
The story follows every aspect of Emily’s life - the good, the bad and the ugly. The story is relatable to so many women and even men really, normalising becoming a single parent, and juggling that with work, social life and potential new love life. Emily’s the kind of girl I’d probably be friends with, eating cereals for tea and drinking Dr Pepper at any given opportunity!
.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
.
I’ll definitely be looking out for Elizabeths’ future releases!

I spent a wonderful afternoon reading this book and couldn’t put it down until I had finished! My heart broke for Emily as her world turned upside down in an instant. I laughed out loud at many of the predicaments she found herself in while trying to get her life back on track. This was a heart warming tale of a woman on a journey to find herself again after her marriage ends. I was left wanting to read more and learn what happens to Emily as her life finally starts to come back together! Elizabeth Alison has a way with words that draws you right from the beginning. If you love rom coms as much as I do, you will certainly want to check out this book!!

Wife and mother Emily Esposito finds her life turned completely upside-down when she loses everything she thought mattered: her job, her husband; her family life. This book is her journey navigating through the painful and difficult experiences and learning how to prioritize and focus on the important things. It examines relationships and hardships and how those things can ultimately add to our coping skills and make us stronger.

This was an eye-opening story line that will have the reader’s emotions all over the place as Emily copes with her life events and still comes out being caring and loving and having hope. Very inspirational and a touching story.

This book did nothing special for me. The original premise was great: a young mother trying to keep a level head for herself and her son after the end of her marriage and many other life changes occur. New relationships, new job, and traversing the new territory of single-parenthood should have made for a fun read. But this just wasn't fun for me. Don't get me wrong, it was not bad but it was just so so boring. With each chapter I felt less and less compelled to finish this read and I was dragging by the end. I think this novel suffered a serious editing issue. After countless chapters of Emily doing the exact same things: doing laundry, cleaning her house, working at the restaurant, contemplating if she would date; the plot became extremely redundant. I get that these mundane repetitions may have resonated with some readers but it just bore me. After all the name of the book is "Emily's New Everything". Many thanks to BookSirens for an arc.

A lovely story that follows Emily. Life changes very quickly for her when her husband comes home one night and announced he's leaving her for someone else. At the same, the place she works is put up for sale and even her waitressing job isn't safe from bad luck.

We watch as Emily transforms from mum and wife to her own self. It's empowering and a reflection on how even when the rug gets pulled out from underneath you, with determination, you can still land on your feet.

There were a lot of editorial issues in this book, which did detract from the otherwise engaging story.

This was a great, fun read! Emily’s life takes a nosedive when her husband leaves her for another woman. What follows is a story about how she picked herself up and carried on, despite having a young child to care for, a job that was in jeopardy, a betrayal from a friend, and numerous other situations to navigate. The characters are engaging and well-developed, and the story is at times poignant, and at other times humorous. I love the author’s witty style and look forward to seeing more from her.
I received an ARC of this novel.
