From the author of Happily Ever Afters comes another irresistible YA romantic comedy full of self-discovery and Black love—and a dreamy European cruise. Perfect for fans of Nicola Yoon and Jenny Han, with crossover appeal for readers of Jasmine Guillory and Talia Hibbert romances.

Lenore Bennett has always been a force. A star artist and style icon at her high school, she’s a master in the subtle art of not giving a . . . well, you know what. But now that graduation is here, she’s a little less sure.

She’s heading to NYU in the fall with a scarlet U (for “undeclared”) written across her chest. Her parents always remind her that Black kids don’t have the luxury of figuring it out as they go—they have to be 110 percent prepared. But it’s a lot of pressure to be her ancestors’ wildest dreams when Lenore’s not even sure what her dreams are yet.

When her family embarks on a post-graduation Mediterranean cruise, her friend Tessa is sure Lenore’s in for a whirlwind romance. But Lenore knows that doesn’t happen to girls like her.

Then she meets Alex Lee. After their parents bond over the Cupid Shuffle, she ends up stuck with him for the remainder of the cruise. He’s a hopeless romantic and a golden boy with a ten-year plan. In short, he’s irritating as hell.

But as they get to know each other during the picturesque stops across Europe, Alex may be able to help Lenore find something else she’s been looking for, even if she doesn’t want to admit it to love.

4 stars!

High school graduate Lenore is bound for NYU as an art history major, but when her parents overhear her say she wasn’t sure about the choice, they put pressure on her to be more decisive. That and a bad breakup with the boy she’s been seeing at her prom, Lenore is bound for a Mediterranean cruise with her family feeling less than celebratory. While on the cruise she meets Alex, and does not click with him. But then the two of them are together more often than not, and sparks begin to fly.

I really thoroughly enjoyed this book. I didn’t read the companion first novel but was able to read this one just fine as a standalone. And for what looked like a fluffy young adult romance, this book packed in a lot of important issues like anxiety in young black men, expectations of black excellence, sibling rivalry, racism in dating.

What I loved most about this book was Lenore herself, I remember what it was like to graduate high school and not know exactly what I wanted to do. And for her there were even more levels of pressure. Plus I was super jealous of her artistic abilities because I have none. The romance was a bit rushed for me, but it worked overall in this book. Also the younger sister Etta gives main character energy and I would love a time jump and for her to get her own book. Just putting that last part out in the universe and hoping it manifests.

I need to go back and read Happily Ever Afters and I am genuinely excited to read more by Elise Bryant.

Companion novel to Happily Ever Afters, a touching YA contemporary romance that claimed my heart earlier this year. In this book, we are following an artist named Lenore who hails from a family of geniuses. Unlike her family, she has no answers for what she wants from the future, but a European cruise and a handsome boy changes all of that.

Loved:

Anxiety rep/how it can manifest in Black boys and what it may look like for Black masculine folk

The conversations about the crushing expectations of Black excellence

Conversations of being Black and dating non Black folks and always being fetishized or sidelined\kept a secret until someone lighter comes along.

The expectations for Black folk to be funny, entertaining, and not emotional or “difficult”

Bryant is a talented, beautiful author with stories that touch to the very core of me. I will always be grateful for her books.

Thank you to the publisher for sending this copy in exchange for honest review. It truly lived up to my high expectations after Happily Ever Afters STOLE my heart in January.

After really enjoying Happily Ever Afters, this was again so fun, and so full of heart. I loved the discussions on what the pressure of the expectation of Black excellence did with Lenore, and I loved seeing how she felt like she had to perform around pretty much everyone ever, except for around the love interest. I do have to say I found the third-act breakup to be very forced and overly dramatic, but other than that, this was really great!

3.5/5 stars. This was cute! I did have a couple of quick gripes I wanted to talk about but I also had things I really liked about this book too.

I didn’t LOVE Lenore as much as I wanted to. There were a lot of instances in the book where she was very selfish and immature. I can’t go into specifics without spoiling certain aspects of the book, but yeah. I do understand that because it’s a YA book the characters obviously won’t have great maturity but still!

I also thought that the relationship in this book moved a liiiittle fast. This book only took place over two weeks, and by the end of the book the characters were already saying, “I love you.” I guess young love burns brightly but damn!

But that being said, I have to admit that Lenore and Alex were adorable together! I really think they balanced each other out nicely and I liked their chemistry. Speaking of Alex, I loved him! He was an absolute joy and such an angel.

Overall, this was nice, and I enjoyed it!!

“So that’s how I end up with pictures of me in a pink boa, with smudged mascara and the fakest smile there ever was. My two best friends, their one true loves, and me. Alone.”

Lenore Bennett is a talented artist with plans to go to NYU in the fall. The only problem is, she is becoming less and less sure that that’s what she wants, despite her parents reminding her that Black kids don’t have the luxury of not having a plan. Then, on a family cruise through Europe, she meets Alex Lee, who seems determined to give her everything she didn’t know she was looking for.

I often don’t connect with YA contemporary (anymore) because what they provide to readers who are still the same age as the characters isn’t something I need (anymore). That is NOT what happened here. The fear about the future and feeling guilty about “wasting” sensible opportunities that are presented to you in favour of pursuing happiness really resonated with me.
Also, I have been on a cruise ship and can confirm that Sea-Bands™️ are a gift from God.

Lenore is a gorgeous main character whose heart has been broken and who is overwhelmed in the face of the world’s expectations. Her and Alex’s whirlwind love story could’ve seemed shallow and childish, but their relationship was very genuinely achy in the heart region despite the 12 day timeline (a testament to Elise Bryant’s writing).

The non-central characters in this book were also great and had their own independent and compelling storylines. Wally is the love of my life fr.

Finally, a reminder from Lenore and I: sometimes you have to risk heartbreak and discomfort and uncertainty in order to have something wonderful 🥰

One True Playlist:

- I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend // Ezra Furman
- Wait a Minute! // WILLOW

A quote that makes me love love 🥰:

This was beyond cute! An all round feel good, YA romance, with POC & LGBTQIA+ rep!

The plot itself was such a unique idea, I’ve never read a cruise romance and I was beyond intrigued by the idea! While it was rather fast paced, and I would have preferred it to be a bit longer, I enjoyed it nonetheless!

The characters were equally as interesting. Our MC Lenore was both passionate but also lacked the confidence in herself that she faked in front of others. While this comes to be a problem eventually, her character development was great! I loved Alex! He was sweet, charming and funny <3 But i have to say i’m particularly intrigued with Etta’s character, the young genius !! I’d love to read more about her

All this to say, if you’re looking for a quick, short & cute YA romance, you should definitely pick this up!

Well, I didn't know what I was expecting but I expected something better than this ..
This is the second book to Happily Ever Afters and here we will follow Lenore, who is struggling to know her true passion and what is she planning to do for the rest of her life, so her parents pressure her to choose a major before the end of their vacation which they will spend on a cruise, no internet and going to different countries in Europe.. on the ship she will meet Alex who is the complete opposite of her, at first he gives the wrong impression to Lenore but later on he shows her that they can be friends and even more and he will help her clam herself down
I really didn't like Lenore, she is whiney, spoiled and really over dramatic with everything, she jumps to conclusions and talks like the world has done her wrong .. I felt the story dragged a lot and there was barely anything happening outside Lenore's bubble except that thing with her brother .. but overall I didn't enjoy it

This was such a cute YA summer vacation romance! Elise Bryant has improved so much in such a short time and I definitely believe that this book is miles ahead of her debut novel. Lenore was such a relatable main character and I found myself connecting to her when she describes putting on a front even with close friends and building such walls that the people around you don’t even know the real you. I loved watching her grow and realize that she can’t keep living like this. LENORE AND ALEX WERE SO CUTE! Alex was such a swoon worthy male love interest. He just felt so sincere and I loved how he made Lenore feel like the only girl in the world. I enjoyed the sibling relationships highlighted in this novel because as a middle child myself it’s hard getting compared to your siblings and it’s easy to feel as though your feelings are ignored. I loved how so many issues were touched on but I do feel the shortness of the novel gave us very cookie cutter solutions. BUT this story made me feel so warm inside and getting this inside look of this Black family’s vacation made me feel at home. So close to being a 5 star read.

More of This!

This book was exactly what I needed. I wanted to get lost in a syrupy sweet YA book. It really embodied everything I love about this genre. I saw so much of my personality in Lenore. I loved her in the first book, so I was ecstatic about getting her story. Alex was absolutely adorable. Almost too perfect, but so lovable. The emphasis on Black excellence throughout the story was so endearing. The setting on the Mediterranean cruise was such a nice backdrop to the story. This book just made me feel really good.

Full Review on The Candid Cover

One True Loves by Elise Bryant is a charming contemporary about self-discovery. As a fan of any book about travel, I adored the cruise ship setting, and the main character and her doubts about the future are relatable. With earnest discussions about expectations of Black excellence and picturesque descriptions of Europe, this is a great read for those looking for a heartfelt story about travel.

In her family of geniuses, Lenore feels pressured to have her entire life figured out before she heads off to college in the fall. However, as she doubts her plans of majoring in art history, Lenore’s parents whisk her away on a family cruise through the Mediterranean, after which Lenore is expected to decide on a major. While her best friend is convinced that Lenore will find true love on the cruise, Lenore is not convinced, especially after getting off on the wrong foot with Alex, a fellow passenger. However, as their parents quickly become friends and travel companions, Lenore starts to realize that Alex isn’t so bad, and that he may even be able to help her in her search for her identity.

❀ RELATABLE MAIN CHARACTER

Lenore is a relatable main character, and I really enjoyed her voice. She is still figuring out what she wants to do after high school, and while she has indicated an interest in art history, she is hesitant to fully commit, as she would rather spend her life creating art than studying it. I especially felt for Lenore as she struggles to live up for her parents’ high expectations for her, and I appreciated the way this ties into discussions about standards for Black excellence. As the book progresses, Lenore starts to figure out who she is, and I enjoyed watching her gain confidence in herself and for the future she wants.

❀ EXCITING SETTING

As a fan of any book about travel, I found that the travel elements in this book are well executed. The cruise ship setting in particular brings so much excitement to the story, and I enjoyed the descriptions of the different activities on board. Beyond the cruise ship, there are also descriptions of each stop the characters make, from Italy to Greece, and the vivid descriptions made me feel like I was right there alongside them.

❀ QUIRKY AND HEARTFELT

One True Loves by Elise Bryant is a quirky and heartfelt story of self-discovery. The main character and the pressures she faces are realistic, and the cruise ship setting makes the story feel even more dreamy. This is a great read for those looking for a sweet romance with a picturesque setting.

1.75/5⭐️ (Rounded Up) |

I found the story idea to be interesting: ✅ - I came across this book at Target and thought it sounded like it would be a light, fun, and cute read.

There were few to no instances in which the writing or writing style detracted from my reading experience in a jarring way: ❌ - I found a lot of moments to be cringy. I debated whether to deduct points here because the writing talent of the author in a stylistic sense wasn’t that off-putting. Unfortunately, the words and plot devices that the author chose to use were awkward, and at times, embarrassing in my opinion. I felt that I couldn’t justify awarding points here.

I found the plot to be well executed (little to no plot holes, appropriate pacing): ❌ - I didn’t feel that there were enough palpable character developing moments or intriguing plot points/twists to make me feel that there was impressing execution. Also, the plot took place over the course of about two weeks, which is understandable for the type of story that it is. Nevertheless, it made the story feel…small.

I found the world building to be immersive and particularly well done: ❌ - I always struggle to decide whether or not I’m going to award points here when I’m reading a contemporary story. At the end of the day, I didn’t feel like I was drawn into the setting of the story. The main characters were traveling across Europe on a cruise ship, but the atmosphere didn’t particularly convey any of those vibes.

I liked the main character or felt personally connected to them in some way: ✅ - I didn’t love this story. I didn’t even like it, but I didn’t hate Lenore as a character either.

I adored the chemistry between the MC and the love interest/other significant characters: ❌ - Lenore and Alex were corny and cliched as both individuals and as a couple. I struggled to connect to them.

This book made me reflect on some aspect of life in a meaningful or socially productive way: ❌ - It’s possible that I didn’t walk away with any new perspective or views because I’m an African American woman, and there really wasn’t anything that this story managed to teach me. Perhaps for non-Black readers, Lenore’s perspective would be quite eye-opening and enlightening. It’s certainly important to have diverse perspectives in literature.

I was moved emotionally at some point during my reading experience: ❌ - I don’t have anything to say here.

I was satisfied with the ending: ✅ - The ending was exactly what I expected. It didn’t feel fair to judge it harshly here when I already knew what sort of story I was reading ten pages in.

There is a page-turning, unputdownable element to this story, and I would re-read happily or recommend passionately: ❌ - I contemplated DNFing this book, but it’s such a short and quick read that it felt disrespectful to this year’s reading goal not to finish it.

*EXTRA CREDIT* Half point available (1/4 ⭐️) for a book with some intriguing albeit minor element that makes me feel inclined to award a slightly higher rating: ✅ - I suppose that this book does have its own charm. I couldn’t find it, personally, but I want to be a little more kind to stories about young women of color.

Star Rating: [3.5/10 points] ➡️ 1.75⭐️

After enjoying the first book last year, I was so excited when this book came out and it did not disappoint. I loved this one so much, even more than the first! This YA book full of lovable characters, great friendships and lots of self discovery was so fun and well written! It also brought up so many important topics which blended into the story perfectly.

Lenore is an amazing and truly relatable main character. After excelling in school, she is unsure of what she wants to do post graduation and is feeling the effects of so much pressure placed on her throughout her life. I loved watching her unapologetically figure out who she is and what she truly wants in life.

Alex. Ohhhh Alex, you perfect boy you. Can someone you meet on a cruise and have known less than a week really make a huge impact on you and your life? Well, YES.

I also really appreciated how the author brought up anxiety/panic attacks, which is something not usually talked about it but especially not a man experiencing it.

" '𝑫𝒐𝒏’𝒕 𝒎𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒘𝒆𝒊𝒓𝒅'. 𝑾𝒉𝒚 𝒊𝒔 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒔𝒐 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒓𝒏𝒆𝒅 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝒃𝒆𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒘𝒆𝒊𝒓𝒅? 𝑨𝒔 𝒊𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒊𝒓 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒎𝒆 𝒇𝒆𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒏𝒚𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒐𝒐 𝒎𝒖𝒄𝒉."

One True Loves by Elise Bryant
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
.
I love love loved this book. I think I might have even liked it more than Happily Ever Afters, but I truly can't decide. The fact that parts of it took place in my two favorite cities on the planet (Long Beach and Rome) sealed the deal for me. I also LOVED the cruise ship setting.
.
This book follows Lenore, one of Tessa's best friends from Happily Ever Afters. Lenore is such a gem of a character. Bryant did such a wonderful job writing her as a deep, flawed, yet beautiful human. I love all the layers of her that this book uncovered. I LOVED that this book talked about mental health, anxiety, race, family dynamics, and the pressure that young people sometimes feel to live up to their parents' expectations.
.
If you love YA romance, and even if you don't, I highly recommend this book. It had me feeling all of the feels. <3

With my application deadline at the end of the week and my major choice still undecided, I read this book at the perfect time.
Sometimes you just gotta read about someone going through the same thing as you to feel a bit less distressed.

"I guess I see it more as a placeholder, though, as I figure out what I really want to do."
As I'm saying it, I hear how privileged I sound, talking about figuring it out while my parents are basically paying a whole-ass salary to send me to this prestigious school.

I hate how he says "artist" like it's "astronaut" or "zookeeper" or something. You know, like one of those precious but totally unrealistic future careers that kindergartners proudly claim.

"I'm scared to commit to anything fully because I might not be the best."

"Because my parents have been right. I don't know what I want."

i read this since i’m going on a cruise later this summer and that was absolutely the best decision. not only did it bring in the most immaculate summer vacation feelings but it was also such a fun story to read. i really loved reading from lenore’s perspective and seeing her growth. her voice was so fun to read from and seeing her relationships with her family and friends and her blossoming relationship with alex were highlights of the book.

i think seeing more closure between her and her parents by the end of the book would have made me enjoy the book even more than i did. i also think what was happening with her brother was a bit rushed so just fleshing that out more would’ve made this book perfect.

lenore and alex’s relationship was the cutest thing ever and i loved seeing their friendship grow into something more. it was by far the most fun i had in the book and honestly it’s a disgrace that we didn’t get an epilogue with more of them.

overall, this was a cute book perfect for a summer read on the beach or at home

Elise Bryant is becoming one of my true loves in the wonderful world of YA romance. After reading and loving her debut novel last year, I was thrilled to dive into this one and was not disappointed.

Readers meet Lenore, Bryant's m.c., during the final weeks of her senior year of high school, and while we only get to follow her for a few weeks, we get to know her well because of the volume of pivotal moments and realizations she's having during this short window. While Lenore faces what I'll refer to with intentional vagueness as romantic challenges, she comes upon some unexpected opportunities when she heads on a graduation/birthday European cruise with her family. However, just as romance is not Lenore's only goal, it's certainly not Bryant's only focus. The titular concept misdirects readers - who are used to some simplification in many YA romances - into thinking that this novel is going to be about *the one*. Instead, it's very much about finding who we really are and what we actually love. That can be tough to do at any age or stage, but for a recent high school grad with a very specific college acceptance in hand, brilliant siblings on the sides, and involved parents hovering near, the challenge is especially harrowing.

Unintentionally, in the writing of this review, I'm already noticing that I've barely mentioned the actual central romance, and I think that's a testament to Bryant's skill. The romance is sweet and layered and engaging, but it is also not the only thing that matters...to Lenore or apparently to this reader.

I continue to be a mega fan of Bryant's work and am already excited to see what comes next! Recommended, obviously!

*Special thanks to NetGalley and Balzer + Bray for this arc, which I received in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed here are my own.

One True Loves follow Lenore, a side character in Bryant's first book Happily Ever After, who embarks on a two week cruise with her family after graduating from high school. After a breakup preceding the trip, and her parents ultimatum that she must choose a final career oath by the end of this cruise, Lenore is feeling stressed during what is supposed to be a vacation. That is until she meets Alex, who may just be her one true love, and the boy who will inspire her to follow her passions.

One True Loves by Elise Bryant was an enjoyable read. It's one of those books that are nice for a vacation or if you want a quick escape from reality for a while, nothing too complex. The cruise ship setting was very fun and offered something new that I haven't seen a lot in YA. Lenore is spunky and a fun perspective to read. Her struggles with her parents felt very realistic, and I loved how Bryant discussed how racism played a role in Lenore's parents pressure on her to choose a career path at such a young age.

This book was on its way to being a solid 4 stars for me until the last few fifty pages of the novel. The relationship conflict between Alex and Lenore was very abrupt and honestly, didn't make much sense. I really hate the cliche when the main character overhears a conversation and makes assumptions without hearing the entire story, and this novel had the worse case of it. Likewise the resolving of the tension between Lenore and her parents had a very abrupt catalyst. It just felt like the book needed a few more pages to really make everything make sense. I had to take the rating down to a 3.5

Despite my problems, I still overall had an enjoying reading experience. I would recommend this book, especially for the summer months.

I was sent a copy via the publisher because I will be interviewing the author on Feb 9th at 7pm EST over on Indigo's Instagram! This did not affect my review in any way.

I am reading this series backwards. This was my first Bryant book and while I was wary at first (I honestly don't know why), I ended up really enjoying this. I love the commentary surrounding the topic of race, and the topic of parental pressures. I think this book does a really good job of approaching these topics in a way where readers might be able to relate to the MC and her struggles.

While I first felt awful for the MC and her romantic troubles (I may have related to that feeling of never really being someone's first choice), I took a star off because of how the MC handles the situation with her love interest when crap hits the fan.

My favourite part, however, was when the MC allowed herself the levity of taking a break to figure out just what she wants. I think that, while meant for her own good, it is quite troubling to expect an eighteen year old teenager to know what they're going to do for the rest of their lives. I think it's doubly troubling when you appear to compare one child to their siblings when it comes to accomplishments. In this, I saw a clear case of middle child syndrome. But I did like how everything was handled in the end (even if there's one bit that I was still raising my eyebrows at during the final few pages.)

I'd recommend this one if you're someone who wants a light and summery read about a character who just wants to find herself, love, and maybe some form of familial acceptance. I will hopefully be reading the first book sometime this month or next month!

Happy reading!

this was EVERYTHING. LIKE IM STRUGGLING TO PUT INTO WORDS HOW MUCH I LOVED THIS BOOK. but i will try! let me start by saying that lenore bennett is one of my favorite protagonists of all time. she’s artistic, snarky, caring, and intelligent, and i believe that black girls everywhere will see a board of themselves in her. the black family dynamics in this book? chef’s kiss. i’ve never my family so well reflected in a book before, and it filled me with warmth. lenore’s struggle to balance her parents’ definition of black excellence with the path that truly made her happy is truly something i relate to; i was that black girl with the amazing grades who chose an arts degree, and i understand the doubts that follow that. this book reflected them perfectly. i’ve done all this rambling and haven’t even mentioned ALEX LEE. lenore couldn’t have been paired up any more perfectly. she deserved a love story just like this, with someone who promised to see the best in her and did just that, even when she tried to push him away. he was charming and perfectly corny and wonderful, and watching them fall for each other made me grin all the way through. i wish i could read this book for the first time again. WOW.

the miscommunication trope,, wasn’t even the part that pissed me the hell off lmao it was what came after. I was about to give it 3 stars, but the familial relationships, the main internal conflict that lenore has when deciding her future - as she struggles to find a balance between her parents’ expectations, society’s expectations of her as a young black girl, and what makes her truly happy, was just *chef kiss*.

the romantic relationship was genuinely adorable, like the banter was so cute, they had chemistry but that third act breakup was so [clench fist]. I get why her character would think that, and would react like that. but does that make the resolution of that conflict any less frustrating? not really…

still would highly recommend as a really fun and touching coming of age story.
