Perfect for fans of Big Nate, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Timmy Failure, and the previous Stick Dog books, the popular Stick Dog series continues in Tom Watson's hilarious Stick Dog Tries to Take the Donuts ! It's morning. The dogs are hungry. It's time to take the donuts! Stick Dog and his team of strays are off on another outrageous canine caper. To snatch some breakfast treats for his hungry pals, Stick Dog will need to stop a moving truck, outfox a man on a telephone pole, and calm down a very caffeinated Karen. But that's not all. He'll also need to manage the greatest confrontation in history when his good friend Poo-Poo comes face-to-face with the ultimate a squirrel! With Stick Dog's smarts, daring, loyalty—and patience—he just might lead his buddies to the best breakfast ever. Other favorites in the series include Stick Dog Wants a Hot Dog, Stick Dog Chases a Pizza , and many more!
Tom is the author and draws the original sketches for all the Stick Dog stories. He lives in Chicago with his wife, daughter and son. They also have a dog named Shadow. Tom did not want to name the dog Shadow. He wanted to name him ‘Put Your Shirt On.’ It’s a long story. Sometimes when Tom is visiting schools, he shares the story.
Tom’s first jobs out of college were in politics. He worked for U.S. Senator John Glenn and as the Chief Speechwriter for the Governor of Ohio. He has also worked in marketing and advertising. He likes writing books for kids a lot more than writing speeches and other things for grown-ups. He thinks kids are way smarter than grown-ups.
I have to admit I love donuts, too! I was cheering on the gang as they worked together to try a donut. I love how the dogs work together. I really admire Stick Dog’s patience!!
This is a popular series with my third and fourth grade students, but whereas I used to enjoy reading them, this one kind of bothered me. Although the other dogs (Karen, Mutt, Poo-Poo and Stripes) have always questioned some of Stick Dog's decisions, I've never noticed them being outright rude to him, but in this book they were. Condescending is a better term to use here, and it was very unbecoming in the story. I also was bothered by how selfless Stick Dog would be, and yet it was never mentioned or noticed. No one noticed that when they went back to get the donuts that there were nine donuts - enough for each of them to have two, except for Stick Dog, who did not complain that he had less. The stories are still fun and silly for kids, especially the antics of each dog - e.g., Karen who gets hyper after drinking a cup of coffee and Poo-Poo on his usual tirade about squirrels, so I'll likely keep a supply of the books for my students to read. If it's what they want to read - I will provide it! Now, I hear there's a Stick Cat coming - that's something I'll look for!
Stick Dog and his band of strays are off on another canine caper. This time it’s donuts. Oh and after Karen drinks a super sized coffee it’s a task to calm down a very caffeinated Karen. But that's not all. He'll also need to manage the greatest confrontation in history when his good friend Poo-Poo comes face-to-face with the ultimate enemy: a squirrel!
The story “Stick Dog Tries to take the Donuts” by Tom Watson is about when Stick Dog and his friends are arguing, when they notice a man in the distance. Stick Dog and his stray dog friends a Dalmatian named Stripes, a Dachshund named Karen, a mutt named Mutt, and a Poodle named Poo-Poo sneak around an electrician. Stick Dog and his friends find a box with some delicious donuts inside. They grab one of the donuts out of the electrician's truck. They go on a quest to get more donuts from the man. On the way, they get interrupted by a moving truck, having to out smart a man on a pole, and Karen getting hyped off of coffee. Using team effort, endurance, and luck will Stick Dog guide them to get the donuts? The genre of the book “Stick Dog Tries to take the Donuts” by Tom Watson can be classified as fiction, adventure, fantasy. There is a lot more books in the Stick Dog series. This book isn't that long, around 200 pages. It's a quick and easy read, aimed toward a younger audience. I didn't really enjoy this book, because of the way it is like the 4 others. It couldn't hold the attention of me, which is probably because of how I read all the books in a row. Meaning that it would hold the attention of anyone who hasn't read the other books, or like the plot of the other books.. There is a decent amount of action and humor for people of all ages. The words are easily understandable and read, so that readers won't get lost throughout the boring quest the dog's experience. I didn't like how it had the same plot as the other books. The thing I “Hated” about the story was that this book has the same plot as the two other books, but just with a new coat of paint. They followed the rules that the previous books before this one followed. It had a plot about trying to get food, they had characters that tried to fulfill this goal, had a setting for these characters to interact with, and more. There was really a lot of style to this writing and this book is told in third person omniscient as seen from all the characters perspectives, and knowing everything. My favorite character in this the book was definitely still Stick Dog. Stick Dog is the main character in this on going book series. Stick Dog is a dog with a brain when he is in a group of people who usually don't listen and have no idea what they're doing. When he goes on a quest with his friends, he goes out of his way to help of his amigos learn to stop acting ignorant. He learns the exact same thing from the last book proving that it is exactly like the others. “It’s bleeding alright” is my favorite line from the book, because it is an example of how repetitive the jokes are when they just try to make the dogs act and say wacky things. In conclusion they should have just stopped making Stick Dogs books, and stop pushing out sequels every year.
I read this book for school and was mildly surprised and impressed.
A book within a book.
Tom Watson is the author/creator/narrator of this illustrated story.
Stick Dog appears as the simplest of hand drawn illustrations, but his character is well defined and balanced.
Leading a crew of misfits and strays, Stick Dog uses his senses, careful observations and interpersonal skills to solves problems (how to find food?), to lead his gang and to develop the confidence and friendships of his gang.
Stick Dog and his buddies are hungry. Really hungry. There's nothing in the trash and no one barbecuing in the park. But what's on that truck with the strange metal arm? A box of delicious circles.
I'm reading these books with my seven year old son, and he's loving them. Stick Dog is one clever canine, and I know why the dogs want to do anything for donuts. Yum! It's funny when Karen drinks the coffee. Great series.
This book is cool. I atcully like stick dog books but they are kind of weird. Well they called the dogs poo poo and mutt so my faverite chapter is chapter 4. Well it is cool my faverite characte is karen well she is not called poo poo or mutt or any thing, she is just called karen. I like her having a real name.
I think it was the best one so far!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(:
My favorite part of this book was when Karen drank all the coffee. A dog overloaded with caffeine made for some silly sentences and images in my brain. Also I liked that Poo-Poo took the "high road" when confronting a squirrel in a tree.
A HUGE hit with my family! My son loves donuts 🍩 and I love coffee ☕ so it was a win-win. My favorite part was when they thought Stick Dog was eating Karen.😂 Love how these books are easy for my 9 year old to read but enjoyable for me to listen to as he reads. 😊
As a Stick Dog lover, I think it is the best book yet!!!! When Stick Dog goes to the donut shop, the man probably was really confused when Karen drank his coffee. That part was really funny! So I really like this book and wish there was a lot more books that were like this one!!!
Recently, I have been reading some of the Stick Dog books when I have no more books to read. I take them from my little brother and read them. This book is decently funny, but it doesn't have close to as much action or silliness as the other books.
