It’s 4 a.m. when her mom shakes her awake. “Get up baby, we’re going to play hide and seek.” The little girl presses back into the dark space, holding her breath as she hears the shots ring out. She knows she’s next…
When the bodies of a local family are discovered on a quiet street in the small town of Dumfries, Virginia, Detective Amanda Steele takes charge of the case. Brett and Angela Parker were shot three times each, leaving no hope of survival, and their tidy suburban home has been ransacked. But there is no sign of their beloved six-year-old, Zoe.
Zoe is the same age as Amanda’s daughter was when she died, and Amanda can’t bear the thought of another little girl in danger. She’s organizing a search for the child, when she notices something strange about the ottoman at the foot of the Parkers’ bed. She opens it to find Zoe, mute and traumatized, but alive.
With Zoe completely uncommunicative, Amanda must find another way to untangle what destroyed this seemingly perfect family. It’s clear that the killer is searching for something the Parkers had, and until she has this monster behind bars, Amanda fears that he may return for Zoe. When she learns that Brett Parker cut short the family’s recent lakeside vacation, she wonders why. What happened at that lake house, and did it ultimately get them killed?
Amanda heads out to Lake Chesdin on the feeling it might be key to the case, and when she finds a cell phone in the murky waters next to the Parker cabin, she knows she’s made a breakthrough. But then terrible news reaches her from Dumfries; Zoe has been taken from her school playground.
Someone wants to silence the Parker family for good, can Amanda catch them before the little girl she’s desperate to protect pays the price?
A completely gripping and addictive crime thriller that will keep fans of Rachel Caine, Lisa Regan and Robert Dugoni entertained into the early hours.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. The Silent Witness by Carolyn Arnold is the third book in the Detective Amanda Steele series. After reading Stolen Daughters, I eagerly awaited the release of The Silent Witness. I could not wait to slip back into Amanda’s world.
This time around Amanda and her partner, Trent, are investigating a double homicide. Someone shot a couple three times at point blank range. Who shot them and why was the question on everyone’s mind. Meanwhile, the couple’s six-year-old daughter, Zoe, has gone missing. Amanda, while searching the house, found Zoe hiding in an ottoman. Despite the joy of having found her, Amanda recognized the danger Zoe faced as the only witness to the murders. Against her better judgement, she reluctantly agrees to take Zoe home to protect her.
Wow! What a ride. The Silent Witness lived up to its tagline of being an unputdownable read. Danger, intrigue, suspense, drama will keep you reading way into the night. The more Amanda and Trent dug, the more complex their investigation became. While trying to unravel the mystery of the murders, Amanda and Trent discover a link to the sex trafficking ring discovered in the previous installment. Soon, Amanda will realize how on point her gut instincts are.
Since starting this series I became invested in the lives of the characters. Amanda showed a lot of growth throughout the series to the point of her making a life-changing decision. This case opened the door for her to move on from the pain of losing her family by providing her the chance to develop a bond with Zoe. Soon we see an improvement in her work and personal relationships. In my review of Stolen Daughters, I mentioned not everyone she works with was in her corner. Well, the reason for this came to light.
Everyone got their just deserts, which provided the perfect ending. I can’t wait to see what is next in store for Amanda. If you decide to read The Silent Witness, which I strongly recommend you do, be prepared for an intense and thrilling journey. This review was originally posted on Totally Addicted to Reading
Detective Amanda Steele is leading the investigating when a man and his wife were shot and killed in their home. Their 6-year-old daughter Zoe seems to be missing, the house has been ransacked.
There is no evident motivation, but as the house was searched, it seems as though someone was looking for something ... but what? Zoe is traumatized and not speaking, so did she the murders .. can the identify the shooter?
Amanda and her team start at the beginning, questioning family, friends, co-workers, neighbors. One thing stands out as 'not normal' for the family. But why would that particular fact warrant such a killing? Is Zoe in danger ... is someone looking to be rid of any witnesses?
Well-written with a complex plot and intriguing story line, the mystery/crime is wrapped around Amanda's past .. when her husband and young daughter died. The relationship between Amanda and Zoe leads to a healing of circumstances for both. There are twists and turns that point the way to an unexpected conclusion. Although second in the series, this is easily read as a stand alone. However, I do recommend reading in order as there are bits and pieces of Amanda's background that should be read going forward.
Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
This is a must for fans of all crime thrillers, A story of tragedy, murder, suspicions and killers. It brings together threads from the earlier books And goes to prove things aren't always as they look! With great characters, relationships and history This story is full of page-turning mystery!

Why were the parents shot? Did they do or see something and, if so, what? Zoe brings back memories of Amanda's dead daughter Making her feel things, maybe she didn't ought to? The story has plenty of surprises in store Red herrings, danger, revelations and more.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this, such a lot, It keeps you guessing, completing links from the series plot. Such a great read, one of the best If you enjoy crime thrillers put it to the test! Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley, too, For my copy of this book, this is my honest review.
The Silent Witness is the third instalment in Carolyn Arnold's Detective Amanda Steele series, set in Dumfries, Virginia.
With its excellent plot and comfortable pacing, I had difficulty putting this book down between chapters. The Silent Witness was such a compelling read, and I relished every moment. Detective Amanda Steele is really well-drawn - a determined, passionate though sometimes a reckless woman who had an inclination to be acerbic with her colleagues.
This riveting, dark tale was complex and Carolyn Arnold brilliantly builds the suspense, putting me right on the edge of my seat. The intoxicating story brought with it a cat and mouse game with the perpetrator and allowed the reader to learn more about protagonist Amanda's backstory especially the dynamics within her family. Heavy on intense drama, along with several twists, bombshells and enough mystery, corruption and intrigue to compel me to read late into the night, this was an absolutely cracking piece of crime fiction, superbly delivered. I'm keen to devour book 4.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel from Bookouture via NetGalley at my request and this review is my own unbiased opinion.
Amanda is hit by waves of maternal feelings when she discovers Zoe hidden away after the murder of her parents. As she and Trent race to find out who committed the crime, a little girl becomes more embedded in the detective life. Amanda’s family reels from some shocking revelations during her mother’s trial. I read through this one very quickly since I am addicted to this series. I was very pleased with the outcome for one thorn in Amanda’s side. She is ready to take a big step at the end of the book so I’m impatient for the next book. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for early read.
Carolyn Arnold writes some fantastic stories and the tagline for The Silent Witness is an appropriate description of what’s inside, an absolutely unpudownable crime thriller. The first chapter set the hook and I was along for the ride.
It’s 4:03 am and everyone is asleep…until…
Zoe is only six years old when her parents are murdered. Amanda Steele is called on to handle the case, and she thinks of her daughter, who was Zoe’s age when she died in a car accident, along with her father, Amanda’s husband. She is more determined than ever to keep her safe, she just didn’t picture it happening quite the way it did. It makes things complicated for her, but once she settles into the decision, she never looks back.
Amanda spends more time with her work partner,Trent Stenson, than anyone, though she does have a boyfriend, Logan Hunter. She finds it hard to find a lot of time to spend with him. Isn’t that any cop’s story? Logan is a construction worker and has been through some perilous times with Amanda, but that is another story.
Sherry Hill is the police chief, Amanda’s boss. I love when I find a character with my name. That doesn’t happen very often. I do love that she’s a…not very nice person. Gives her more depth and makes for an interesting character. Why is she like that? And why in the world would she tell the media about…everything?
The clues are slow in coming, but Amanda is determined, diligent, and so am I. The case gets more complicated and more dangerous the deeper we dig.
At the end, Carolyn Arnold asks if the twists and turns glued me to the pages. My answer is an emphatic YES! I expect nothing less from her work and I have read a lot of it. The Silent Witness is a tale that keeps on giving suspense, thrills and chills, with characters that I love and love to hate, and what else could I want, except MORE.
“We just follow the evidence to wherever it leads without being swayed or bullied.”
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of The Silent Witness by Carolyn Arnold.
The Silent Witness is the third instalment in the Detective Amanda Steele series, set in Dumfries, Virginia. Detective Steele and partner Trent are called to the scene of a double homicide in which married couple Brett and Angela Parker have both been brutally shot thrice. When gathering information the team head to speak to the neighbours, and it is only then that they are informed that the family have a 6-year-old daughter named Zoe, so Amanda proceeds to search the house for her believing her to be missing. It doesn't take long before an out of place piece of furniture guides them to a large storage ottoman at the foot of the bed in the parents’ master bedroom. There they find Zoe clearly in a shell shocked and traumatised state after witnessing her entire family be gunned down in a hail of bullets.
The intruder had then left and because Zoe had been unable to move she had remained hidden inside the box until this very moment. Due to not knowing the circumstances of the crime, who the perpetrator is or why they killed the Parkers, the police deem it best to take Zoe to the station just in case she still has a bounty on her head even though they don't believe the home invader knew she was hiding or that she saw him commit the slayings. The investigators who have assessed the scene have also concluded that the killings were most likely carried out by a professional hitman due to their rapidness and efficiency, so Amanda decides to take Zoe home with her as she feels it may be the best place for her right now, but when Zoe visits a friend’s house, the killer returns for her and ends up shooting her friend dead, too.
After some tense investigating the police find that just a few days before the shootings, the Parker family had been on holiday in Lake Chesdin but had returned home earlier than originally planned. However, on the trip, evidence suggests that Brett had witnessed a crime being committed and had seemingly caught the act and/or culprits on camera. It appears that the Parker clan had been targeted to stop said photographs ever seeing the light of day. With Zoe clearly in immense danger, can Amanda keep her safe until the ruthless would-be serial killer is identified and behind bars? This is a compelling, enthralling and fast-paced procedural with twists, turns and misdirection aplenty. It throws you in at the deep end from the very beginning and the action, tension and nail-bitingly close calls just keep coming.
There is never a dull moment in this well written and adeptly woven thriller and Arnold, as always, is superb at creating memorable and engaging characters. I enjoyed the fact that it was multilayered, so not only is there the mystery as to who is carrying out these heinous killings or who has arranged for them to happen there is also a deeper mystery to unravel as to what exactly the photographs depict that has driven the perpetrator to attempt to slaughter an entire innocent family for accidentally seeing something they shouldn't. An exciting high stakes game of cat and mouse in which we learn more about protagonist Amanda's backstory especially the dynamics within her family and more about her young daughter who tragically passed away. Highly recommended.
Detective steele is faced with a hard crime to solve. A double homicide and only one witness their little girl who is staying silent. What she can't work out is why they will killed in the first place. Plus the little girl finds an attachment to the Detective.
I enjoyed this book. The third one in the Amanda Steele series so I highly recommend the first 2 books before reading this one and this review. I found this case intriguing , I couldn't stop trying to figure out who the killer was but I had zero idea or zero idea of the motive either. It was great I love it when crime books keep me on my toes. But the best part of the book was the relationship that starts between Amanda and the victims 6 year old daughter. It was so well written and as we know about Amanda's loss and inability to get pregnant again so you can see where the storyline is going and I must say I got a tad emotional.
With how the last book ended we know Amanda has her eye on the Congress man and his involvement in the child sex ring I must say I had forgotten so when we are reminded I was glad that it wasn't just a passing remark and we get to follow Amanda's suspicions and progress with the case. It was great and I must say slightly shocking so hold onto your hats.
Carolyn Arnold is a fantastic crime writer and keeps you on your toes. She manages to portray emotions on the page unlike others. The way the chapters are structured as well make it easy to read. I flew through this book and cannot wait for the next in the series. She manages to keep you in suspense from begining to end
Would I recommend this book? Yes I would recommend the entire series. Its great the thing about this book was I had no idea who the killer was and it was such a shocker I actually had to re read. Any crime author who can keep me guessing is beyond talented to me. One thing you do get with this series there's a lot of emotions behind every word. 4.5 stars only reason it's not 5 is I have read some outstanding crime books this year and the silent witness is almost there but not quite.
Thank you to netgalley, bookouture publishers and Carolyn Arnold for the advanced digital copy of the silent witness in exchange for my fair and honest opinions.
The Silent Witness is the third Amanda Steele procedural thriller by Carolyn Arnold. Released 24th Sept 2021, it's 294 pages and is available in paperback, audio, and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately.
This is a tensely written, action driven procedural with loads of atmosphere and a feeling of real threat. The opening scene, almost a prologue, which sets up the entire plot arc was difficult to read with its brutality. The author has very good technical expertise with descriptive prose, and although the dialogue is a bit rough in places, it's never clunky and I never found myself yanked out of the story by overwrought descriptions or action.
This is definitely not a cozy mystery and much of the action, which includes home invasion, violent murder, and a traumatized child, may be potentially triggering to some readers. There are now 5 extant books in the series, with a 6th due out in late 2022, so for fans of procedural thrillers, this is a solid contender for binge reading. Despite being the third book in the series, all necessary back-story is provided in context, and the mystery is self contained in this volume, so it could be read as a standalone.
The author is adept and competent. Although it's not at all derivative, the vibe here felt a lot like Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme books, and fans of that series will likely enjoy this one as well.
Four and a half stars.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
This is a gripping crime thriller that also pulls at your heart strings. Six year old Zoe witnesses the murder of her Mum and Dad and is found by Detective Amanda Steele in a chest at the bottom of the bed. Zoe is in a state of shock and says very little when she’s taken away from the murder scene. Amanda had a daughter the same age as Zoe and feels very protective of her. However, when she’s told that Zoe needs to stay with her, she’s worried if she’ll be able to cope having a little girl in Lindsey’s room. Zoe opens up to Amanda and is able to provide some information about the killer and they form a connection. Amanda and Trent follow several leads and can’t quite believe it when they discover links to the sex trafficking ring and a prominent politician. Amanda suspects there’s corruption in the levels above her but is shocked at how far this person will go to protect those involved. This is a great read that definitely had me racing through the pages. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
Thoroughly enjoying this series. Quick reads. Great plot. Characters are developing well. Amanda and Trent, the key homicide detectives, are learning more about each other and it’s working well. Great working relationship. Would make a great TV series. Let’s see what’s in store for them in the next book.
Review for 'The Silent Witness' by Carolyn Arnold.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Carolyn Arnold, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous
Publication date 24th September 2021.
This is the third book I have read by this author. It is also the third book in the 'Detective Amanda Steele' series but can be read as a standalone. I have previously read 'Stolen Daughters' which I also highly recommend and is the second book in the 'Detective Amanda Steelw' series.
I was originally drawn to this book by its eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that this book is ' A completely gripping and addictive crime thriller that will keep fans of Rachel Caine, Lisa Regan and Robert Dugoni entertained into the early hours.' I am a huge fan of Lisa Regan so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I am also a huge fan of Carolyn and if this is half as good as 'Stolen Daughters' it is sure to be a page turning read. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of 39 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in Virginia, USA 🇺🇸
This book is written in third person perspective and the protagonist is Detective Amanda Steele. The benefits of third person perspective with are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.
'The Silent Witness' discusses some topics that may trigger some readers or may not be suitable for others. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. In this book Carolyn discusses/includes child abduction and small mention of sex rings.
What an ending and yet another epic read from the very talented Carolyn Arnold!!! Congratulations Carolyn on yet another page turner!! This is an extremely well written book with vivid descriptions that will suck you straight into the storyline and captivated from beginning to end. The synopsis and cover worked perfectly with the storyline.
The storyline means that there is no problem with this being read as a standalone which is what I did. I was absolutely hooked throughout, a true page turner from beginning to end. The storyline was in depth and packed with suspense, twists, turns, shocks and was an edge of your seat, nail biting and heart racing psychological thriller. I was absolutely hooked. Carolyn has done lots of research into both police procedural and sex trafficking and this shines throughout. There's nothing worse that a book filled with minor errors as the author hasn't taken the time to do some research into the areas they have written about. I read this book in less than 24 hours and I'm looking forward to reading the previous book on this series as well as more to come. It certainly promises to be an epic series. It is one of the best books I have read this month and I really enjoyed. It was left on what I would definitely call a cliffhanger!!! It is filled with suspense, tension, mystery, shocks, love, sadness, crime and everything you could ever want in a crime novel. There were several bombshells that I was not suspecting and I am quite happy by the fate of certain people, I won't say more as not to spoil it for future readers. It is a true page turner that will leave you biting your nails on the edge of your seat with your heart racing. I loved the ending and I cannot wait to see what Amanda is going to do now!!!! Hope your busy typing the next one up Carolyn as I cannot wait!!!
Although this is the third book in the series you will have absolutely no problems reading it without the others. Any details or events that have previously happened are mentioned in just the right amount of detail to let a new reader know what has happened and yet not too much to bore a previous reader.
I loved meeting all the characters again who were all strong, well defined and unique. I became completely invested in Amanda, Trent and Zoe. Amanda is absolutely whoop a## and I love seeing strong female leads in books. She has a background but will not let it pull her down and she is definitely someone I would love to have on my side. It was so bitter sweet watching her bond with Zoe grow and develop and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next. I personally hope she gets the happiness and family she deserves but then at the same time how will she work everything out?? One can only wait and see!! Trent is another fantastic team member and they work perfectly well together. Some of the characters were less likeable (horrid) such as Hill but at the same time it was interesting to see the relationships between them and Amanda. I loved Rideout's (medical examiner) character and personality with his morgue humour and I also quite like Malone and see him as a sort of fatherly figure to Amanda. I am definitely looking forward to meeting them all again!!!
I could not praise this book enough and highly recommend. Carolyn I cannot wait to read more of your very successful work!!! I would also love to see this book turned into a movie. An absolutely addictive, compelling and gripping true page turner!!! If you have not read any books by this epic authour then you are seriously missing out!!!
Some of my favourite quotes/sayings in this book include the following:
'“But can you imagine if the murders are connected to Brett’s work ? It would have the makings of the plot for a thriller novel.”'
Overall an absolutely captivating, engrossing page turner that is compelling and addictive!!!
Genres covered in this novel include Thriller, Mystery, Police Procedural, Suspense, Hardboiled, Romance Novel, Psychological Thriller, Noir Fiction, Psychological Fiction and Crime Fiction amongst others.
I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of Carol Wyer, Lisa Regan, Angela Marsons and ANYONE looking for an epic page turner .
324 pages.
This book is just £1.99 to purchase on kindle via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!
Rated 5/5 (I LOVED it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.
Feel free to add me on Goodreads or follow me on my website or Facebook for more reviews
This book was just not a standout plot for me. I enjoyed the characters - very likeable, but the plot was predictable, slow and did not hold my interest.
Amanda’s daughter Lindsey was six when she died, and Amanda can’t bear the thought of another little girl in danger. Whilst searching she notices something strange about the ottoman at the foot of the Parkers’ bed. She opens it to find Zoe, mute and traumatized, but alive. The Parker family had been on holiday at Lake Chesdin but cut the holiday short so she heads out to the lake. Then Zoe is taken from her school playground. This is Amanda’s third outing & is another well written page turner. I really like Amanda & loved how more of her backstory is gradually revealed. Another multi-layered read, which once I'd started I found very hard to put down, the pace is good & it really pulled at my heart strings. There were twists & turns plus surprises. I look forward to more books in the series My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
The third in the Amanda Steele series opens with a bang, so to speak. In the wee hours of the morning, Angela Parker nudges her husband Brett and tells him there's someone in the house. While he investigates, she gets their very young daughter Zoe, then hides in the closet. She hears Brett being shot, and then with dread, waits her turn as the intruder discovers her.
Steele is called to the scene, and she and her team (plus everyone else who shows up at a murder) move around the interior of the house, looking for anything to give a clue as to who these people are, what they did for a living, and if they recently mad someone incredibly mad. They quickly realize that Zoe is not there - not in the closet, not behind mom in the closet - and think perhaps the intruders have taken her. The child is about the same age as Steele's daughter was when she died, and eventually Steele finds the girl in a wicker basket at the foot of the bed.
Zoe, for her part, traumatized by what she's seen and heard, does not speak - thus, the silent witness. Much of the first third of the book revolves around Steele gaining Zoe's trust and getting her to talk and Steele's own, constant, inner thinking about how she misses her daughter and doesn't want to get close to Zoe. Despite this, she does wind up taking Zoe in, since the girl is likely in danger.
The team pulls the strings of the investigation, eventually pulling in a connection to another case involving a sitting rep in the city, a hotel seemingly in the middle of nowhere, another unsolved murder, and corruption under their noses.
The pacing is fairly taut, and the writing is fine - no major bumps except the drumbeat of Steele insisting to herself that the kid will be put into the system, that she can't handle it, and so on. That did get a little old by about the 60% mark, but it eases up toward the end.
The end...I'm not a big fan of bad guy infodumps at the end. But we get one, and not a bad shootout to go with it, which kind of made up for that.
Solid three out of five stars.
Thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for the reading copy.
It is a great story. Needed to sleep, so had to wait til morning to get back to it. High rating because of great writing. Recommend to anyone who appreciates a great book!
I guess this is a series type book, so even though I could follow the main plot with 0 issues, the side plots didn’t add up. it’s a good book! the character is ok, but there’s so many side quests happening.
This crime thriller was like reading a TV show. Predictable characters and plot lines. I am not a fan of this genre, and I can count on one hand the number of crime thrillers that I have read. Perhaps this is why I cannot eek out more than 2/5 stars.
Amanda Steele Series, Book Three This series just keeps getting sharper and more compelling. And that is saying a lot - as I loved the first two books in the Detective Amanda Steele series. This story is completely stand-alone, complete in and of itself. Amanda is a Detective with the Prince William County Police Department, which covers several small cities within that county. Our victims in The Silent Witness are the Parker family who lives in Triangle, Virginia. Brett and Angela are murdered in a professional manner, and their only child, Zoe, six years old, is missing. The search is on all over the extensive home and beyond. Amanda, thinking like the mother she once was, finds Zoe still hiding in a rattan bench at the foot of her parent's bed. Zoe had not been harmed, but she had witnessed her father's death through the gaps in the wicker weave and is highly traumatized. Parts of the house are trashed, but expensive items are still in place.
Brett worked for a Washington DC manufacturer writing code for the military for a new automated missiles delivery system, and for a time it is thought that his work had highlighted the family and set them up for murder. His work laptop is not found, and the family had spent several days over the Labor Day weekend on vacation at Lake Chesdin, a couple of hours away from home. However, they had returned early on Thursday, though Brett wasn't required to return to work until the following Monday. Their bodies were not found until Tuesday, when Zoe's godmother, a teacher at her school who usually brought Zoe home and babysat her on the days her mother had to work until six, was concerned that Zoe had missed the first day of school and Angela hadn't answered her phone all weekend.
Brett's boss assures Amanda and her crew that there was no way Brett would have had anything to do with his work at home, as it was not allowed. Nobody could take anything concerning the job out of their building. But of course, Brett's co-workers rat him out. He often did work on the program at home, and came to work and entered many changes, etc., first thing in the morning. Brett had an eidetic memory and didn't need to take anything home. But perhaps there was a personal problem behind the murders.
But poor Zoe has no remaining family anywhere. She trusts Amanda, who found her, but can't speak, can't look at anyone. But Amanda doesn't want the presence of this child, sweet and hurting as she is, in her home. Amanda has had no contact with children since the death of her husband and 7-year-old daughter Lindsey five years ago in an auto accident, and she is afraid Zoe by her very presence in her home would reawaken that first, intense pain of Lindsey's loss all over again. She can't say no, however, and Zoe spends the first night with Amanda and the next day at the cop shop with a child psychiatrist. As quick as that, Zoe worms her way into Amanda's heart. And as the only witness to her parent's murder, Amanda will have to work with Zoe whether she can remain aloof and professional or not. The clues to the killer will all have to involve their only, silent, eye witness. Reviewed on January 21, 2022, at Goodreads, AmazonSmile, Barnes&Nobler, BookBub, Kobo, and GooglePlay.
Six-year-old Zoe is awakened by her mom in the early hours of the morning to tell her that they were going to play a game. Her mom tells her to hide in the bench at the foot of their bed. I can see it all in my head and imagine Zoe’s mother telling her to hide in there and not to come out until she tells her to. Someone has broken into their home. Zoe has to lay in that box as her mom and dad are murdered. Zoe watches as the killer shoots her dad.
Detective Amanda Steele is put in charge of the double homicide. I could see Amanda walking around the house looking for clues that could tell her what happened. Clues that could hopefully lead her to the murderer. Clues that could hopefully lead her to why someone would want to kill this husband and wife, this mother and father.
The murder victim’s six-year-old daughter Zoe is missing from the home. Where is she? Did she have a sleepover with a friend? Did the killer take her? I could just see Amanda standing in the doorway of the bedroom where the couple was found letting the room tell her its secrets, secrets that will hopefully give her a clue as to where the missing girl may be or at least a lead to her where abouts. Zoe is Amanda’s key, silent witness to the case. Can Zoe help Amanda put the pieces together so they can find the person who killed her mom and dad?
I can just see Amanda standing there with her head cocked to one side. I know the moment she believes she just may have found the little girl. I can just see her racing over to the bench opening it and low and behold there she is right where her mother left her.
Zoe is scared and in shock at what she has witnessed. She is so traumatized that she isn’t saying a word. I would imagine at this point she doesn’t know who to trust. At this moment she is just trying to process what she saw and heard in her own little way. I was in tears at witnessing this scene, the moment when Amanda opened that bench and there was Zoe. Poor, poor child.
I have read the first two books in the Detective Amanda Steele series and loved them both tremendously but I do believe that I liked The Silent Witness way better. The Silent Witness had my attention from the first page and once I read that first page I was hooked. I was pulled in with all the mystery and suspense that just kept rolling out page after page. There were so many twists I didn’t know which end was up. I was pulled in deeper and deeper with each one of those twists. Twists that I never expected for one minute.
I can’t seem to get enough of the Detective Amanda Steele series and can’t wait for the next book in the series to make its appearance. The Silent Witness is going to haunt me for a long time to come. I would very much like to see the Detective Amanda Steele series on the big screen.
I would highly recommend The Silent Witness to all crime thriller fans! One-click your copy of The Silent Witness today for another epic edition of the Detective Amanda Steele stories!
4.5 Stars: The Silent Witness by Carolyn Arnold is the third book in the Detective Amanda Steele series. This is the first I have read and although I had no issues following the story, I recommend you begin with the first book in the series. I will definitely be going back to read the two I missed and there is some overreaching story arcs. This story opens with a home invasion where a young couple are executed in their home. They had must enough time, after hearing someone coming up the stairs to hide their daughter. Amanda and her partner Trent are the lead investigators on the case. Finding Zoe, the daughter, they now have to protect her, find out what she saw and solve the case.
I really enjoyed this police procedural/crime thriller. Amanda has some baggage and flaws, but she is a great detective with amazing instincts. I also like Trent, her partner. They have a great working relationship and seem to be able to intuit what the other is thinking. They follow the clues and work with the others behind the scenes to hunt down evidence. Once they figured out what was going on, they take the reader on the journey to uncover what other clues and evidence they can find. Not all the characters were likable and some were downright despicable, but you will have to read this one to find out who they were. Amanda and Zoe have a very interesting relationship that works to help both of them heal a bit. The plot was well-developed and ties up some loose ends from the previous book. I really enjoyed the investigation process, how they questioned witnesses and friends and what kinds of evidence they collected. It made the story so realistic to me. There are twists and turns that point the way to an unexpected conclusion which I loved. A book that I really enjoyed and recommend to those who enjoy police procedurals and crime thrillers. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book upon request. The rating and opinions shared are my own.
Behold! Detective Amanda Steele is back with a brand new case!
Plot:- How would you deal with a situation, when both parents are murdered at gun point and the only witness is the six year old girl who was hiding? Zoe Parker saw both her parents being murdered at gun point. Detective Amanda Steele and her partner Trent are in charge of this case. While investigating this case, they find that the Parkers were on a vacation in Lake Chesdin, a few days before their murder but their vacation was cut short by returning early. And while investigating, they find out that Zoe Parker's father was a witness to a horrible crime committed at the lake and the detectives think that the they are both related. Then while in school, Zoe Parker was abducted and Amanda and her partner Trent realize that they are running out of time...
Good ones
Gosh, there are so many good things about this book!
* From the first chapter to the end, the story was so gripping that I was literally hooked into the story, not wanting to put the book down! *I felt like I was watching some sort of acting-packed thriller and I felt like I was sitting at the edge of my seat while reading this book!--it was that good! *The slow budding developing relationship between Zoe and Amanda sounds so maternal and touching--that Amanda in fact reminded Zoe of her deceased daughter Lindsey which was very touching to read. *So many of twists and turns, many are unexpected and as I said earlier, quite unputdownable! *The writing of this was intense, the author did a good job drawing the reader into the story! *AND I cannot wait for the fourth book to come soon!
Bad things...not many!
Overall, this was an unputdownable, gripping twisty thriller that will keep you up all night!
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC. The review is based on my honest opinion only.
The Silent Witness by Carolyn Arnold is the third in this series featuring Detective Amanda Steele. This can be read as a stand-alone but will be so much better if you've read the previous books. Amanda and her partner, Trent have been called to a murder, well, two, really. And it is more than murder. They were executed. The thing is, their daughter, six, is missing. Was she taken? It doesn't take too long for Amanda to discover her mother's clever hiding place, but the child is silent, traumatized. She is breaking Amanda's heart. Chief Hill, who had no real business being involved anyway, decided the best thing for Zoe, the little girl should go home with Amanda. Amanda didn't know if she could do it, still reeling from the death of her own little girl, but did it she did as they continued investigating. There were all kinds of things that made no sense, but finally they found something that did. They had a direction.
Amanda Steele is a strong woman. She lost her husband, daughter, and unborn child over five years ago and is still up and working. She had hidden herself away for a while, abandoning her family but things were better now. Her mother's trial was finally happening and she was too busy with this case to even attend. That didn't make anyone in her family very happy. She had adjusted to having Trent as her partner, more than adjusted, she liked it. This was a standalone murder investigation but it has ties to the earlier two books. It is a clever mystery, one that Amanda and Trent solved by knowing the right expert to call for help. The pacing was good, sometimes almost too fast. A lot happened in a very short period of time. It is well worth your time.

The 3rd book in the series has Amanda involved in a double homicide where the parents were killed leaving a six year old daughter who was in hiding. After searching the house for Zoe and not having any luck, Amanda had an idea after search the main bedroom, she discovered a wicker hamper at the end of the bed and believed it was a good hiding place. As luck would have it, she was right and Zoe was found. After taking her to the police station, Zoe wound up going to Amanda's house for the night. Amanda thought it would only be for the night, but it turned out longer because, the 2nd night Zoe went to sty with a friend and that did not work out well. An individual came looking for ZOE and wound up shooting the friend. Amanda was called to the scene, and while searching the shooter they located him and in making his escape he wounded Amanda. In the end, Zoe wound up staying with Amanda where a bond was formed. Zoe originally would not say anything, but as time went by she started talking because of what she felt for Amanda. A sketch was made of the shooter and Zoe identified him as someone that was at her house when her parents were killed, but told Amanda that he was not their killer. Following leads that were developed, they ultimately discovered why the parents were killed and why it was so important to get ZOE.
They were able to develop enough information to determine who was behind this and how it indirectly led to Amanda's previous case where she wound up being suspended.
If you want to discover who was responsible and how the case connected to the earlier case even though it didn't seem that way in the beginning, then you need to read this book. Learn what Zoe's stay created for Amanda.
Amanda Steele is a first-rate detective who loves her job. One of the down sides of the job is investigating horrific crimes.
Brett, Angela and their daughter were in the wrong place at a bad time. Frantically he had the women in his life hide in their master bedroom.
Investigating the murder scene Amanda notes they are a young couple with a child nearly the age of her own. The couple is killed by apparent professionals and the little girl is nowhere to be found. The child named Zoe is found in a storage ottoman in the dead couples’ bedroom.
The killings had occurred quickly and efficiently, but why? Terrified the little girl did not make a sound and stayed totally still. The killers had overlooked her. Can Amanda keep the child safe while investigating the crime?
Ms. Arnold builds a strong case for methodical investigative tactics. She is aggravated by the fact that the papers in their zeal to report sensational crimes mentioned that the child was the only one to escape the massacre.
This tale develops at a fast clip and I found it hard to put the book down.
Amanda had lost her own daughter in a tragic accident in which she also lost her husband! She is torn between placing the child in Child Protective Service and possibly adopting her. Her daughter would now be Zoe’s age.
The book is compelling and I applaud the author for her skill in story telling. 5 stars - CE Williams We received a complimentary review copy of this book from the author and publisher through NetGalley that in no way influenced this review. These are his honest opinions.
Maybe I'm just getting old and cranky, but as I've been wont to do lately, I found quite a few things about this book that were problematic/unbelievable. On the other hand, I did keep reading. Most of these things include spoilers.
Maybe I'll read another one in this series some time, but at the moment I'm leaning against it.
This was an entertaining audiobook though a little light on police procedures. Amanda Steele is a police detective who is called in when the bodies of two people are found after a home invasion. Their six-year-old daughter Zoe is missing. This brings back all sorts of memories for Amanda who lost her own daughter and husband in a car accident which also claimed the life of her unborn baby and robbed her of the possibility of more children.
She immediately begins a search for the child. When Zoe is found hiding in a hamper in the bedroom where her parents' bodies have been found, Amanda is determined to solve the case and protect the child. Zoe probably saw the killers, but she isn't talking. Circumstances induce Amanda to take Zoe home with her to protect her from those who killed her parents which brings back all sorts of old memories.
Meanwhile, Amanda's mother is on trial for murder - a murder she confessed to Amanda that she committed - and Amanda learned that her father once had an affair which resulted in a child. The affair came out when it was revealed that one of the CSI who should have testified at her mother's trial had to recuse herself because she was the "other woman."
The story had a lot of rather unlikely events including a police chief and politician involved in a sex trafficking ring with only Amanda and her partner knowing about it. It was packed with high emotion though. I liked the character of Amanda and was curious about her past activities which I assume are detailed in the first two books of this series.
The narration was well done. The narrator was good at all the accents and good at building the appropriate suspense.
