Chronicles on Consciousness : A Journey of Self-Discovery

Rate this book
Does the mind emerge from matter? Does an absolute reality exist, independent of any conscious individual? If not, what makes the reality experienced by one individual slightly different from that experienced by the others? As Ary carries out doctoral and post-doctoral research in the sciences and travels back and forth between Calcutta and California for over half a decade, he seeks answers to these questions. In the process, he goes through various confusion regarding his career path, friendship, love, loneliness, and spiritual bliss. This philosophical novel, which chronicles all these experiences in Ary’s life, is unique in the way it combines science with autobiographical fiction to present various original theories on the mind and consciousness.

In the most unconventional way, the author meticulously describes his graduate school journey right from the beginning till the very end . What is remarkable is the author effortlessly highlights the changes which occur in his thinking process during this entire timespan. There is also a romantic element in the novel for the delight of the readers. But what remains the unique thing about this novel is the way the author describes the mind and thinking process with various scientific facts, albeit in a lucid way . In one sentence , its is a transformation journey of Ary from the naive grad student who is easily influenced by his external circumstances to all together a very different person!

The author rightly said, "But still, the words were fundamentally incapable of capturing all the complexities of the thoughts." Having said so, I feel the author had done a remarkable job of capturing the complex nature of human thoughts and consciousness using words!

Chronicles on Consciousness is an autobiographical fiction exploring some deep questions on mind and consciousness. I feel a PhD student or a researcher would find the book relatable on various fronts. It is worth reading.

A commendable effort, by the author, for a debut novel.
