A serial killer is terrorizing members of the medical community in Buffalo, NY. Veteran Detective, Rhody Richardson, is leading the investigation with his partner, Detective Wayne. Victims have been disfigured and tortured - faces sliced, numbers carved into their chests. The brilliant, but young, forensic intern, Connor Patrick, tries desperately to make sense of the numbers but cannot find a pattern. The killer has promised ten victims, but Richardson, and psychiatric consultant Dr. Kaileen Taylor believe it will continue well past that number. At each of the gruesome crime scenes, the killer has left cryptic poems with different names. Richardson ventures down a dangerous path, deciphering what the killer is trying to tell them before they escape justice into the eternal void of the unknown.
I grew up in the Tug Hill region of the Adirondack Mountains in upstate NY - but I have considered myself to be a Buffalonian ever since I came to Buffalo to go to Canisius College. I married my beautiful wife Kerry and we have a large wonderful family!
Below is the first "official" independent review I have received for Unknown Vengeance. I am looking forward to hearing honest impressions from others:
Rounding this one up to 3.5 stars. Working in the medical field I've had some issues with books in past stating silly things. That's not the case with this one. Pat OBrien is accurate with areas of this medical thriller from that standpoint.
Paul Schon is suffering the loss of his wife who died of an untreatable infection. Known to all as a super nice guy who is mourning his wife.
Meanwhile medical professionals are being targeted, tortured, and murdered all across Buffalo, NY. Let me tell you this is pretty gruesome at times. Not a whole lot left to your imagination and it's been a minute since I've been blessed with some descriptive brutality.
Seems pretty obvious and that's told right off the get go. They why is really still in question and the focus of this novel. Loss of .5 of a star because I wished it was a little more suspenseful.
There's 2 main detectives Robinson and Wayne. Jon Wayne actually and there's some really humorous talk in here. I don't want to give away anything but there's a comment about "the 'ol ball game" that left me laughing out loud for at least a minute. One thing I love about men authors is they tend to humor me more.
On this same note there are several other minor characters on the police force. I found it tough to keep them all straight. Maybe because it's not my line of work? Loss of a star for that.
Overall super enjoyable read and I am happy I get to be on tour of this book in mid July on booksta. So thank you to lovbookstours for providing me a copy in exchange for an honest review.
This is out now and if your into serial killers, medical thrillers, and some funny cop talk like I am, be sure to grab yourself a copy!
Looking for a fast-paced, graphically detailed new thriller? Have I got a book for you!
This book has all the lurid, technicolor detail of a horror movie combined with a gritty police procedural. Two veteran Buffalo police detectives, Rhody Richardson and Jon Wayne, team up with a rookie forensic intern, Connor Patrick, psychiatric consultant Dr. Kaileen Taylor, and others to find a ruthless serial killer who is targeting members of the local medical community. Can they stop him before it's too late?
Dark humor and gruesome descriptions of the killer's handiwork round out this well-written debut. I really hope there are future stories in the works, as I would like to see more of Detectives Richardson and Wayne!
This thriller plunges head-first into the serial killer’s first and second victims, both achieved an hour apart. From the outset, I could not put the book down. The characters are brilliantly written, especially the detectives who find themselves investigating the murders. In particular from the outset, you want the new forensic intern Connor Patrick to do well. After all he’s picked up on so many of the clues and despite clearly being a terribly shy geek, who I could picture perfectly, I found that I was cheering him on throughout.
Whoever the killer is, is a pretty sick guy that’s for sure but immediately I cared and needed to know who would do such a thing and why and that’s pretty impressive to achieve in the first couple of chapters of the book. The subject matter is approached articulately and with an emotional depth that is imperative given the book’s theme.
Each of the serial killers’ victims are introduced before their demise which builds the suspense up immeasurably making you feel emotionally involved before they meet their death; witnessing the fear through their eyes, knowing what is to come.
The clues and the unveiling of the serial killer was perfectly timed without losing the tension. I hurtled through this book desperate to know how it was going to end and whether the lead Detectives Richardson and Wayne would be able to identify the killer in time.
Each page is easy to imagine with its rich descriptions of the surroundings and characters that have been written superbly and with a lot of consideration to their different plights in life.
I hope there’s more from this Author in terms of the characters in this novel of Rhody Richardson and his team. It would be wonderful to see them fronting another crime spree.
I can see this book being made into a feature film or a Netflix series it’s that captivating, intriguing and addictive. I do hope so.
This is a top class thriller and definitely a novel to put on your ‘to be read’ lists.
Phenomenal book. I was completely taken in and couldn't stop reading. At the end I find this is the first book by this author and it makes it even more impressive to me. I cannot wait to read more!!
I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is a great debut novel. Set in America, two doctors are found dead, their throats slit and numbers carved into their chest. The team of Jon Wayne and Rhody Richardson, along with Alyssa Joseph and Connor Patrick, are on the case. These characters are what make this book. The partnership of Jon and Rhody is brilliant, they bounce off each other, tease each other, know they have each others backs. They are both smart, and have different skills, but the fairly unique vision by Rhody, spotting things that most others miss is a joy to read. Alyssa is described as small but fierce, and I can just picture this tiny little woman in a room full of raucous men, having them charmed so they never mess with her more than once. There is one scene where she is talking to the press that is just a joy to witness. She totally plays them and they have no idea they are being played. The hero for me, and someone I want to just take home and look after is Connor Patrick. Hes an intern, having studied forensics. He also has the vision to spot things others dont, his knowledge knows no bounds, and hes also kick arse, and there is a particularly sweet scene with him showing a different side to his personality. If this is the first in a series can we see more of him please. The other storyline follows Paul Schon who is in therapy after his wife died of a mysterious illness that couldnt be cured. He is on a new type of drug that tackles psychosis, anxiety, and depression. However he keeps waking up with his legs aching and an unquenchable thirst. He also frequently has terrible nightmares. For a crime novel, this has a bit of everything, and is at times grusome, gripping, funny, sweet. A great read and I look forward to more from this author.
What an amazing debut novel! Like others, I was surprised at the end to realise that this was the author’s first novel and was completely blown away by this. I am now on the lookout for more novels by this author as I cannot wait to read more of his work.
Paul Schon lost his wife a little over a year ago after she became ill after receiving Botox. A killer is on the loose, targeting medical professionals and leaves poems behind at each scene. The killer is meticulously clean and leaves no trace, apart from the poems and a number carved into each body. Detectives, Rhody Richardson and Jon Wayne, yes there are lots of jokes about his name!) find themselves at the helm of this investigation.
Another perfect book for me, this is one of my favourite genres; crime / thriller / police procedural, and yet again this book delivers the goods for so many reasons. The book is full of amazingly detailed writing, but just a warning, if you are a little squeamish, you might want the heads up that some of the medical descriptions are true to life and don’t spare any details. Please don’t let this put you off though, just more of a trigger warning.
I highly recommend this fast paced, brilliantly well written, unputdownable read. It tackles some pretty difficult subjects but with the added humour from several of the characters that makes this yet another book that had me reading late into the night, ‘just one more chapter’.
Thank you to @lovebooktours, @cayellepublishing and @patobriennovelist for a gifted copy of this book in return for an honest review.
As soon as I read the blurb of this book I just knew that I had to read it! I don't read a lot of medical thrillers but it did really feel like the author Pat O'Brien really knew what they were talking about and had done research to get as much accuracy as they could.
The book is very well written and even manages to fit humorous moments in the story between the fact there is a serial killer targeting the medical community! The characters featured in the boom were great, each added something different to the book and the two main detectives added great depth too the book. It has lots of moments that will keep you hooked on it but there are also a few little moments were you could see where it was heading. Which is the only reason why I gave it 4 not 5 , it could just be the fact that I read so many thrillers that I can guess what is going to happen.
But overall a very enjoyable read, great characters , great setting, great storyline that reels you in from the start. Definitely an author to keep your eye out for!
Unknown Vengeance by Pat O’Brien was a fast paced crime thriller that leads you to understand why some people commit murder.
4/5 stars
Paul’s wife has recently died, and he’s dealing with needing to move on with his life after promising her he would continue to live. Things go askew when murders begin to happen with chilling details that are continually repeated throughout every one.
The writing in this book was really well done. I really enjoyed Pats writing style and thought that seeing all sides of an investigation was fascinating. I really enjoyed the characters and I enjoyed the pacing of this book.
The plot was a solid plot. The reveals weren’t super gasp worthly, but unraveling the clues throughout the novel was absolutely fascinating. This was a very quick read, just keep in mind it is extremely detailed at some points and may not be suitable for readers who don’t like blood or gore!
I was hooked from the off with this one and I thought the language and pace flowed really nicely throughout. It was definitely entertaining and full of puzzles to solve.
I love reading and puzzles so combining the two was a winner. I was already trying to figure out the numbers and the poems to see if I could crack it before the detectives. I enjoyed the close relationship between Detectives Richardson and Wayne and also how they interacted with the intern Connor.
I knocked a star off as I did feel like there was just something missing at the end, like a final twist or some hidden bit of information. I can't quite put my finger on it but I think it just needed something more to make it a 5* read.
Overall, a really engaging plot and I will be looking for future works by Pat.
*I received a complimentary copy of the e-book from lovebookstours and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
This kind of thriller is right up my street. Straightaway you’re thrown into the action and it kept me gripped the whole way through, I didn’t want to put it down. The two lead detectives are really likeable and Pat O’Brien has managed to portray their camaraderie, respect for each other and closeness really well and I love the injection of humour that lightens what could be a very dark feel to the book. My favourite character is Connor Patrick, the timid nerdy geek who might not be too timid after all. For a debut novel I think this is superbly written. The clues all come together in a natural way and although there weren’t any surprises that I hadn’t already worked out it didn’t detract from this being a great first novel with James Patterson vibes. I really hope this is the start of a series.
🔪 JULY REVIEW 🔪 [Unknown Vengeance || Pat O'Brien] • • Thank you to @cayellepublishing @patobriennovelist @lovebookstours for a #Gifted copy of #UnknownVengeance for my honest review • Unknown Vengeance, read as a stand alone or the first in his series, is an extremely suspenseful thriller. We follow detectives as they try to uncover the mystery between related killings and take down a serial killer. • I absolutely love crime shows, such as Dexter, and this had super similar vibes as I read Pat's debut novel. I'm honestly shocked this is his debut. The inclusion of anagrams as clues was also extremely clever! • The plot is cohesive and there is plenty of character development as we get a glimpse into the serial killers personal life. • Overall, I couldn't put this down and cannot wait for the next book in the series. • ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (4.5/5)
Unknown Vengeance gripped me from page one, but I had to read it with the light on as it’s dark, gruesome and eerily suspenseful!
The book is fast paced, very well written and the author does a particularly great job of bringing the characters to life. Detectives Rhody Richardson and Jon Wayne (cue the jokes!) are lifelong friends and their camaraderie and relationship was very believable.
In contrast to the dark subject of the storyline, the book is full of unexpected humour, including cowboy related jokes inspired by Jon’s name, as well as a few hilarious laugh out loud moments. This humour provided welcome lightness and turned a series of gruesome murders into an enjoyable read.
Unknown Vengeance is a great, fast paced read that gave me James Paterson vibes. Pat O’Brien is definitely an author to look out for!
This book really blew me away and I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did. Unknown Vengeance is a fast paced thriller that throws the reader straight into the storyline really quickly. The book is really gruesome and each crime is described in great detail.
The two main characters are humorous and likeable, and I found myself laughing out loud at times. I loved the different element this gave the book in among all the gore. The author introduces us to each character before they get murdered which really makes the reader more invested in them and they demise.
If you are after a gore filled thriller that is fast paced them give this a go. I really enjoyed it and would recommend.
I absolutely love a good thriller and when I read the blurb, I could not wait to read this book. This novel did not disappoint me. I must admit there were places I felt it to be creepy and I thought the killer must be seriously sick in the head.
I was gripped from the first page as it's starts off with the murder scene. I really liked the author's writing style and couldn't believe this is a debut novel. It's written with such confidence and very descriptive.
Brilliantly written fast paced thriller and look forward to reading more of the author's work.
This book is great a thriller you must read keep you on suspense like I was every page a turn over quiet scary and disturbing in some scene the story line was brilliant I enjoy the read kept me on my toes 💜The writing style is brilliant and the characters was amazing plots and twist you enjoy it every murder is different and gruesome and leads a clue very good investigators on each case they try and solve the murders 💜.
Wow this a story that really hits the ground running. It’s pacey and action packed and from the get go, the reader is thrown in at the deep end. I love it! It’s an edgy story, full of twists and turns - one you can’t bear to tear yourself away from. It is a gruesome thriller so maybe not one for the faint hearted. Really descriptive writing, fantastic character observations and snappy dialogue - I really enjoyed this book.
This book pulls you in right away and keeps you interested till the end. You follow two detectives chasing a serial killer and trying to get ahead of him. If you want to read a riveting murder mystery this one is a good one.
Awesome and fast read! It is so detailed and vivid! I felt like I was watching a movie or tv show - which this would be an awesome choice for an adaptation. I found this book to be well written.
After not reading a thriller for a while I was excited to pick this up, but a part of me wish I hadn’t. The overall idea of this was great, however I feel like it was such a let down. I don’t know whether it was because it was American, but I just didn’t like the way the novel was written, I found the characters dull and really hated the fact they switched from using Surname and First-name; it took me a while to figure out who was who. This had so much potential but I feel like the characters, and the narrative just didn’t work for me. The constant John Wayne jokes got really boring after the second one, and a lot of the other humour I didn’t find humorous (again I think due to it being very American). However I think the poems were brilliantly written along with the Anagrams (they were a great touch). I kept waiting for a big twist at the end but it never came.
I was gifted this book in exchange for a honest review.
Unknown Vengeance by Pat O’Brien 4/5⭐️
This book was a really fast paced and gripping read. It follows a serial killer who leaves a clue at each of his crime scenes. The detectives allocated to finding the killer are on a race against time to stop him. I loved the plot and thought it was well written. I did feel the story was a little predictable and repetitive at times. Despite this I didn’t want to put it down. I found this book to be an easy read and I liked the authors writing style. I would definitely read more books by this author.
I got Unknown Vengeance by Pat O'Brien for free for a fair and honest review.
Unknown Vengeance Is a crime thriller novel, which tells the story of two detectives investigating the murder of medical personal in Buffalo, NY in America. This is a police procedural type of crime novel as the two detectives go through the process of solving the crimes before the murder has completed, 10, murders before stopping, however both detectives and the support staff fell that he will continue after that. Unknown Vengeance is the type of crime novel that does not cut down on blood and gore of both the crime scene as well as the action parts of the book, so it is not a cozy mystery type novel. Having said that however the way that Pat O’Brian writes these scenes they do not seem to be overindulgence in describing the violence in the book or out of place with the story line. With this Unknown Vengeance being based around the police procedure, in solving the crime, it does resolve on how the two main detectives work together in the mind of the reader, this is even more so when the crime from the readers point of view is not difficult. The great thing about this story is the two detectives, Wayne and Richardson, is a partnership works really well both in working together and friendship between the two of them. With the addition of the support staff adding to the story in their own way, while none of the characters had a full background, as a reader there was enough to be going on with to enjoy the story. In conclusion Unknown Vengeance by Pat O'Brien, was a great crime thriller to read with great action scenes, in addition to two griping detectives, and I can highly recommend this book.
This book scared me - it takes a lot for me to say that now a days.
I found the writing style excellent. It was easy to follow and hard to put down.
Loved the jokes around Jon Wayne and the fact that him and his partner were two hard hitting straight talking detectives. Who did not take any shit.
Some hard hitting topics covered in this book too - murder, death of someone close to you, psychosis and mental illness. Plus the impact medications have on your health and well-being.
I really enjoyed this book. My only criticism is that it could have been a bit longer! Would definitely read more books by the author.
Forty minutes into the book and I guessed the killer. Nonetheless, I was still hooked till the end. In-depth background information on the victims made them feel real. The gory details of the crime scene provided an odd satisfaction. I hope to read more of Rhody Richardson and Jon Wayne solving crimes across the globe.
