Have you always wondered what happened to the characters of Peter Pan after the story ended???
Australian author Liz Butcher has brought the classic tale back to life in a new and truly fascinating way to show readers a take on Wendy Darling and her brothers 20yrs later.
So Wendy was kidnapped 20yrs ago, she was found wandering down a road and pregnant. Fast forward 20yrs and Wendy is a police detective there daughter Jane is a reporter her brothers are around and this dysfunctional family is full of secrets.
I was blown away and freaked out by the descriptive writing it was so thrillingly written I spooked myself multiple times lol. I loved the mesh up linking Peter Pan to the Greek god Pan and those eyes I can still picture them. There were plenty of twists and turns to keep me enthralled and immersed in this book I couldn’t put it down and I am really hoping for a sequel.
Have you ever read, seen, or even felt like something was too good to be true, or just too good to be… good, and then it hits you: you are reading/seeing a horror scene? Yeah… Welcome to “Never Never” by Liz Butcher.
This is a dark fantasy, criminal, detective type novel and I can put a dash below the word thriller, because as sure as hell the author knows how to scare us and keep us on our toes while imagining all the eerie possibilities EVEN before the actual “detective work” starts out. “Never Never” is creepy as hell, and although there are lots of non-creepy detective police work and interactions, the creepiness doesn’t go away from the background, nor does the anxiety behind all of it all. It’s amazing! Creepy, yet amazing that a writer can actually keep us thrilled throughout the entire novel, no matter how light the scene, and one can only blame those first 6 chapters.
Another thing that we have to state is that Liz Butcher, (quite a name for an horror writer by the way) almost bordered to the GENIUS when she combined several elements that made us, the readers, emotionally involved in the story at once, not only by first scaring the hell out of our wits through the main character’s experiences, then by taking a piece of everybody’s childhood and putting into this haunting piece of story, BUT, by completing the circle by making the case closely related to our main character. I haven’t read much of the Brother’s Grim stories but I’m sure they would be somewhat written like this. Very nice.
The line between reality and illusion is distorted in so many ways, that not even we, the readers, can assure ourselves which is which, not even after reading more than half of the book, as many possibilities are laid upon the table without any of them being excluded or favoured.
Besides scaring the crap out of us, Liz Butcher does an excellent job on hiding details and filling out our list of “to discover things” but giving us plenty to smoothly move on with the novel. As questions build up, we know more and more, and we start getting the picture of what we need to know, like Wendy and the relationship she had with her parents and brothers, the fact that she’s lesbian, which is very cool, and we start getting an idea that there’s a terrible secret behind their family, or the house itself, but what secret is that?
Enjoyable, simple and quick to understand characters pop-in quickly, each with its own brush of traits that mark their identity according to their past and circumstances but always having a strong connection to Wendy, our main character, either on the positive side or the negative, but always with some spice of humour, a good dab of emotion and very distinct roles towards the plot.
The author makes the characters strikingly and instantly enjoyable through their interactions, letting us figure out who is who, in terms of behaviour, through dialogue. Although we are not told, at once, or explicitly, the body “layouts” of the characters, except for the face of Jane, Wendy’s daughter, we are allowed to construct their features by the way they talk, which is fun and neat, because, one would think that the it would make a “missing feature” on the book, but only increases our interactivity with the story and our attention towards it. Nice. And may I add, that Lily is THE perfect girlfriend? Because she is, and maybe, just maybe, Wendy and Lily are turning out to be my favourite lesbian couple.
But love is not what you should expect from Liz Butcher, but instead, creepy, veeeery creepy scenes. I mean, creeepy to the point of you asking: “What in the snowiest of hells was that?”, and something telling you that you don’t want to, but you will, find out, because… unicorns are not as beautiful creatures once they are put on the other side of the spectrum.
The fact that the author did manage the “responsibility” of holding (and ruining) most of our childhood memories, by making out a great story out of such a known tale, (I won’t say which in order not to spoil you fun), made this reading session pleasing and worth the while. I enjoyed it very much and I ASURE you that you will re-think your childhood movies after you read this book. Not on a good sense though.
Oh, and before we close shop, just know that… this will not end well, nor as expected. This book will leave you with goosebumps, and rise every hair on your neck. Nightmares are possibilities here too, so read it, if you so dare.
Welcome to Never Never. Enjoy 😉
Pros: Awesome and delightful characters, really fun to read. Specially female characters. Insinuations and descriptions that simply flood you with goosebumps and send chills down your spine Great tension on the plot and scenes overall Very good descriptions of characters emotions, scenes and imagination Great character interactions The twist on the whole tale was surprising in every sense, until the end An ending that will leave you asking yourself: “Waiiit…. WHAT?! Oh… crap!”
Cons: The first chapters mostly start with “Wendy”. Which turns itself to be repetitive and somewhat unnecessary
After reading "Fates' Fury" I just had to read another from Australian author Liz Butcher. Liz has captured me again with her exquisite way of drawing into the scenes and characters. Without giving any spoilers away, this is a book that will really make you think and wonder!
It ended way too short, I hope there will be a sequel about Jane. This story is amazing in that it takes you into the world of fairytale and horror both at once.
An adult Wendy Darling discovers there may be mysterious and terrifying connections between her abduction as a child (what she remembers of it anyway) and the disappearance of a young girl in Melbourne. Now a detective, Wendy talks her way onto the case, convinced of the connection but also surprised by its depth. Pressures mount on all sides as the girl's politician father seems to be involved somehow and Wendy and her detective partner are in a race against the clock to find her. This spin on a well-known story focuses on childhood trauma, growing up, and how the supernatural bleeds into ordinary life. Peter Pan’s green eyes serve as an oppressive force throughout, evoking terror in Wendy. Some scenes of Wendy's captivity are intense. Wendy is established as LGBTQ+ with interest in both her girlfriend and her male partner. A vivid, chimerical, compelling tale.
One of the best reads of 2021 so far! Liz Butcher has worked her magic once more, bringing a chilling retelling of the classic Peter Pan mythos and putting a series of twists and turns into the narrative to keep the reader invested heavily. The novel does an excellent job of pacing the story, slowly building a relationship between Wendy the protagonist, and the audience as the history of the Darling Family is revealed.
The character development was some of the best work to emerge thus far this year. Wendy is a force to be reckoned with, fighting her past trauma while trying to find this young girl before it's too late. Yet the revelation of the girl’s abductor and their ties to Wendy’s own case decades earlier make for some interesting developments. The author has managed to craft a new legacy for Pan himself, marking a dark and villainous turn that will shock and amaze readers. His connection to an ancient mythological being will add an entirely new depth to this rich story, making this something fans of fantasy and horror will not be able to put down.
The Verdict
A mesmerizing, haunting, and highly entertaining read, author Liz Butcher’s horror retelling of the fantasy classic in her novel “Never Never” makes this a must-read novel and a contender for novel of the year of 2021. A book that readers will flock to over and over again, a twist ending that leaves readers hanging off the author’s every word makes this reader eager to see if the author will tackle the narrative again in a sequel. If you haven’t yet, be sure to grab your copy today!
From page one you are drawn into the mysterious scenario of Wendy’s frightening dreams and strange family inferences. Then there is the unusual, but familiar, family name that niggles at the back of your mind
Wendy is a Detective who has come back to the family home for her Mother’s funeral along with her two brothers, her daughter and her loving partner. She is haunted by the trauma from her past abduction and cannot free herself from the nightmares that have followed.
Wendy decides to go back to work after her mother’s funeral, when a case that sounds similar to her own past abduction is headlined in the news.
And so begins a frightening yet intriguing series of events that lead to Wendy facing her worst fears ever!
You will not be able to put this book down once you have been pulled into it, I loved how edgy and spine chilling it was and would thoroughly recommend it for readers wanting a thrilling journey through the eyes of Detective Wendy.
10 out of 10 Liz Butcher, this book needs to be made into a movie!
I downloaded this book without reading the description. I know. I should have read it first and can’t remember why I did now. So each page I turned was a surprise. What I didn’t expect was that the genre was a bit of everything, scifi/fantasy, horror, romance, urban, detective and a crime mystery.
It made an extremely fascinating plot, nothing was straight forward in this story. Just when you thought you understood it, there was a twist. Gradually, I began to see a Peter Pan connection, and no, this is nothing like that story. I commend the author for her imagination and don’t think I have come across anything like this before. The main character was called Wendy Darling. Her nemesis’s name was Pan. This was where I started making the connection
I made a graphic to accompany on series on my blog. Come over and read the full feature.
I adore twists on classic stories, and Never, Never does not disappoint! Wendy leading the story as an adult with Peter Pan taking on a very different role than we remember from childhood...I could not put this down. Had me “hooked” from beginning to end!
Wendy Darling, 20 years after Peter Pan is now a detective. When a young girl in her town goes missing this brings back memories from her own experience as she looks into the disappearance.
Compelling, chilling, and throws more questions than answers. Characters you know, as you've never seen them. I can't decide if I really, really want a sequel, or if that will ruin the mystique..
It's not what I was expecting, it's so much better! I have a habit of having books sit in my library for a while after I get them so I forget the blurb by the time I get to them so I went into this thinking it was going to be a cutesy Peter Pan retelling but it's part crime mystery, part psychological thriller with a sprinkle of dark fantasy. Twenty years ago Wendy was abducted by Pan, she escaped and moved on with her life becominga Detective. But now in eerily similar circumstances another girl has gone missing and Wendy is determined to find her. I thought the writing style flowed nicely without any confusion around the flashback scenes. I personally thought Jane would've questioned things especially considering her profession. The relationship between the main character and her partner, while unconventional, felt so realistic and mature. I both love and hated the ending because it was great but I need more. I'm thoroughly intrigued and eagerly awaiting, with money in hand, to see how this will continue!
This book truly exceeded my expectations. This indie author knows how to tell a story and I’m here for it. I didn’t think I would like a Peter Pan retelling, but I enjoyed this so much. It kept my attention, kept me turning pages, and I didn’t want to put it down!!
The book starts slow, but don’t let that discourage you. There is a ton going on. I love that it has a murder mystery feel to it, but with an abduction instead. It also has paranormal and horror themes, which makes this book so unique.
Liz Butcher has delivered a complex and rich story that has me wanting more!! Highly recommend!
Liz Butcher created such an interesting perspective on the Peter pan story. We start the book out with Wendy darling all grown up as a detective and she is at the family estate to bury her late mother. We discover that Wendy was abducted when she was 15. Her experience makes her the perfect candidate to investigate the case of a missing teenager. As the case progressed, we are introduced to the characters of Pan, Smee and Hook. This was such an imaginative interpretation but it did leave me slightly lacking with some plot questions and areas without resolution so that is why I ranked this 4 out of 5 stars.
As a huge fan of Peter Pan as a child, I KNEW I had to check out this story when I saw a review about it from another author friend. The story is about an adult Wendy Darling, set 20 years after a horrible situation she endured. She has become a top notch detective investigating a case of a missing girl that is eerily similar to her own.
I really enjoyed the attention to detail Liz put in her story and how it kept me reading until I came to the end...and please, please, please consider writing a sequel to this! AH! That ending left me begging for more. If you're a fan of Peter Pan, mystery, thrillers, detective work and unexpected twists, I HIGHLY recommend this read!

So I’m giving this book 3 stars because...well, firstly I think the storyline is actually quite ingenious - taking a childhood tale and twisting it into the darkness. The writing style, for me, doesn’t quite do it - no idea why not but I felt like I was reading a script rather than a book. It’s third person and maybe that’s why. Secondly the characters - main and supporting didn’t gel. Lastly, it’s slow...drawn out slow...
This book has great reviews and my expectations going in were solid. It just didn’t live up to it. Give it a go and I do recommend.
This book has me shook to the core! What would happen if Peter Pan was the bad guy and Captain Hook wasn't? What if the lost boys weren't orphans? What happened when the Darling kids grew up? This retelling gives you these answers in a way that will have you turning pages and staying up late to finish it. It will also give you a book hangover wondering how it all happened. It's a shocking story. Absolutely shocking!
** Spoiler** I love the dark take and flipping Pan to be with villain and Hook to be the saviour.
The ended was really good and I sure hope there will be a sequel?! I can't tell if I'd like it more with the reader gets to guess the ending, but so much happened in the last 20% of the book, and things are unresolved I think we need closure.
There are so many breadcrumbs along the way that we didn't get to see come to fruition.
It lost a star because of the slower beginning.
