*Running Time => 9hrs. and 13mins.*

He has a past shrouded in mystery. A skeleton sheathed in indestructible metal. Unbreakable claws that can cut through almost anything. And a "mutant healing factor" that can mend virtually any wound.

His friends call him Logan. The X-Men call him 'Wolverine'.

While visiting Japan, Logan is recruited to recover a stolen experimental drug, one that has the potential to be a true miracle cure for all human disease - or a sadistic means of enslaving the world. With every hour bringing mankind closer to tragedy, Logan embarks on a daring mission to identify the thieves and thwart their terrifying agenda.

From the back alleys of Tokyo to the smugglers' coves of Brazil, from the opulent palaces of St. Petersburg to the war-torn villages of Africa, Logan's quest takes him from one deadly setting to the next. But his desperate last stand will test the limits of his abilities - and his courage - like never before.

Is it possible for a pulp novel about a nigh-immortal man with a ludicrous ability to recover from the most grievous (and graphic) of injuries, an indestructible skeleton and anger management issues to go with his razor sharp claws to achieve the status of moving literature? Most would probably say an immediate dismissive no but in my case, thanks to the expert narration of the audiobook by Richard Rohan, I feel like...yes?

While the character may be eternal this is very much a book of its time, I feel. We catch up with Logan doing one of the things he's next best at, brooding at a gravesite, and he immediately gets pulled into stopping a global conspiracy to make the world dependent on a new wonder drug. And, although there are gory fights against ninjas, mechs, and evil mutants aplenty the true villain connecting it all proves to be globalized predatory capitalism emanating out of the West, Russia, and Japan. I won't spoil anything, but some of the scenes set in what we once optimistically called "the developing world" nearly brought me to tears.

How 'bout that, bub?

My rating is 3.5 stars.

A novel based on the Marvel character. I thought the author did a good job with the characterization of Wolverine. And this novel does what you would expect from a novel based on a comic book character. It has plenty of action with battles between over the top heroes and villains. My only problem was the secondary story. I understand why the author weaved it in with the main story but I found it to be boring and not what I would like in a novel of this nature. That being said, if you are looking for a fun romp with plenty of action, this book delivers.

Marvel has released many new tie-in novels for the MCU over the last few years. I’ve enjoyed several so I decided to seek out some of the older, (unfortunately) out of print titles. Road of Bones is a solid adventure story featuring Wolverine without any of the other familiar X-Men. This works well since he is such a loner and very reluctant to ask for help; readers don’t wonder why the other X-Men don’t swoop in to help.

Wolverine owes a favor to an old friend, from whose corporation was stolen a very dangerous drug that could cure all the world’s illnesses, or enslave millions. A corporate executive, Wai Ying, is assigned to travel with him to recover the drug and a kidnapped scientist. She is more than she appears, and quickly becomes a valuable ally to Logan as he uncovers the thieves and tracks them around the world.

Wolverine is a blunt instrument, and damn good at it. And this story has no shortage of brutal, violent action scenes that showcase his battle skills and his healing factor. However, the author also shows another side that is calculating and keenly intelligent. Logan has lived a long time and acquired decades of knowledge and history. I particularly loved a scene where he is undercover and is put on the spot to demonstrate a sommelier’s knowledge – which he does! The mutual respect that develops between him and Wai Ying is a great complement to the action.

Overall, this was an excellent book and I look forward to reading more Wolverine and/or X-Man novels. A shame this is out of print, and I hope Titan Books adds this title to their rerelease schedule.

Beautifully written, full of suspense. It was nice to get to know new characters. I didn't see Harada coming. Tearful ending, but it showed that he changed.

I liked the rest though.

One of our local used bookstores has an aisle of trade paperbacks dedicated to tie-ins with video games, TV shows, comics, and the like. I’ve found some fun stuff there, including books based on the Splinter Cell and Halo video games, Tron, 1960s Star Trek, and 1990s Batman. These books are never a bad time. The last time I was browsing that section, I picked up with Wolverine story for a couple of bucks. It made for fun bedtime reading with some unexpected pathos.

In Wolverine: Road of Bones, the titular antihero gets recruited for a James Bond-style mission. Our favorite grumpy canucklehead joins an international crew of ne’er-do-wells to thwart some old-fashioned bio-terrorism. In particular, they go continent-hopping to locate a miracle drug that is not at all what it seems. Along the way, they confront some well-known Marvel villains, as well as what I would call mundane evil. Maybe that’s the worst kind.

David Alan Mack is an experienced pro in writing genre fiction based on pre-existing intellectual property. Around the same time that he wrote this Wolverine book, he also wrote the Star Trek: Vanguard series that I’ve previously reviewed, as well as shelves full of other Strek Trek tie-ins. I

Mack’s experience helps a lot when writing characters that the reader will already know. His pacing is fast and workmanlike. The book feels like a comic or a spy thriller. Mack is also especially good at describing mutant-powered action. One thing he describes particularly well is what Wolverine physically feels before and during his healing factor kicks in. The patience and endurance that Logan must develop to get torn apart and sewn back together so often is shocking at times. He has decades of experience with it, but it’s new to the reader.

Wolverine also has decades of experience with violence, be it justified or not. Mack explores that. I know that some readers will find that particular thread a bit awkward in a comic book novelization, but I liked it.

3.5/5, rounded up.

Not bad at all if a little too graphic on the descriptions of Wolverines regenerative ability.
The Hand has a plan to enslave humanity with a drug called panacea which cures everything, the big drawback if you don't carry on taking it you die. Horribly.
And it's up to Wolverine to save the world.
I didn't like the pathos descriptions of a mother trying to save her children in Africa it seemed dragged out and not really relevant

I like Wolverine, but I'm not a huge fan. Mostly because he is cool, but he's basically a blunt instrument... he's not the one you call if you have a puzzle or a delicate matter to resolve. He might try to be sneaky, but he's most valuable when he's just blazing in, claws out, healing factor up, to take out all the bad guys. As he says, "he's the best he is at what he does, but what he does isn't very nice."

So, if you are a Wolverine fan, and you're just looking for him to just do what he does, you'll probably like this book. The plot is pretty straightforward; it's a solo Wolverine adventure, and no other X-men characters appear except for a brief conversation with Professor X. Wolverine is recruited by a former comrade from his samurai training days to pay back a debt by reclaiming a stolen item. This item is a drug, supposedly designed to cure all diseases, but which is deadly addictive, rendering anyone who takes it permanently healthy, but also essentially a slave of the drugdealer. The majority of this story is Wolverine goes to a place, finds one small piece of information, claws his way out, and gets back on the plan. Repeat about 3 times. But, like I said, if you enjoy that side of Wolverine, you'll get plenty of fight scenes here. You'll even get more than one fight with Silver Samurai, who also shows up.

But, as a book, I found it rather repetitive and boring. The plot repeats itself. It doesn't feel like it really solves any problems by the end. We're left where we started, with little to no progression in the characters or the world. Granted, that's kind of par for the course when it comes to superheroes, but this is a novel, not a comic book, so I guess I expect a bit more. The fight scenes are well thought-out, but the author has a tendency to over-explain simple things, including very detailed descriptions of mundane things such as putting on clothes or eating pancakes. It got kind of annoying.
Wolverine is written as he usually would be, but the other characters are pretty flat and boring. I could barely remember their names, and they were really just around to provide background for discussions, be plot devices, or at times be threatened so that Wolverine must strain himself to save them. Other than that, nothing special.

So, if you are looking for a basic book where Wolverine slices and dices, here you go. Otherwise, it's not that great of a read.

Wolverine has always been one of my favorite Marvel characters. He's tough, strong, cunning, he has ninja/samurai training, he can track via scents, he has those claws and a ton of other stuff. There's just too much to list why he is so awesome!

***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS***

So this book had to tracking down the mystical ninja group known as "The Hand," who stole a miracle cure that they are going to turn into a medical treatment that they will use to enslave the world.

Wolverine teams up with a Japanese mutant named Wai Ying and a former KGB agent named Ziv. Together the three of them race around the world and stop in exotic places like Brazil, Russia, Japan, etc, while they are looking to find leads on the Hand and their allies in the Russian Mafia, and where the drug is being kept.

Once in a while we cut to a woman in Africa whose children are unfortunately dying from diseases that the local doctors do not have the money or medicines they need to fight them off. Her life is shown as nothing but non-stop pain, misery and suffering. She also talks about when she was raped, about other women being raped, people being murdered and marauders coming and stealing food and medicine from the people who need it so badly. So honestly the scenes with her in them are depressing and just one big buzz kill. The book loses points because of this.

Also, Wolverine's healing factor is incorrectly portrayed. In the comics I've seen him recover from having his entire body engulfed in flames in just a few seconds. Here it takes over an hour. Minor points are lost because of this inconsistency.

***END SPOILERS*** ***END SPOILERS*** ***END SPOILERS***

All in all, the action is good, the locations are pretty cool, and seeing Logan go up against the Russian versions of the Wonder Twins was pretty rockin'! All fans of Wolverine will enjoy this!

I loved this book! I just finished it today, and I love how smart and witty Logan is! Showing he is more than just brawn. Also enjoyed how much of a tease and a flirt he is. He's a little shit and I love it. 100/10 highly recommend.

From knowing a crime scene down to a science, to being called out to know his wine and nailing it Logan shows his brains, even going as far as knowing a kimono down to the artist who handpainted it. Of course, we get the classic, I don't have a plan run in guns blazing wolverine. We all love, but the smarts shown here brought something I loved. Many portrayals show only his berserker, his rage, and mindless brute fighting style.

While that is in this book, David expanded it in a way I appreciate, Logan isn't young. He's been through a lot and had a lot of training, too. He's not all brawn, and this author captured logans intelligence but also gave us the wolverine we know. Again, I highly recommend this book!

This was by far one of my favorite Marvel novelizations I've read thus far. Logan's character development was fantastic and went with the plots' pacing really well. The side characters and villains were fleshed out and really memorable. The pacing and plot were very well done and read very much like an actual Wolverine comic book.

Usually I like Wolverine stories and David Mack's writing, so I was a little surprised when this didn't work for me. I prefer a solitary Wolverine and I felt like in this book, not only was he working with others, but also didn't really even feel like the primary character.

An independent Wolverine tale that delves into a little of his history in Japan. Cameo by another X-Men, but other than that it lacks in other familiar Marvel faces. Fast paced, but the ending was dragged out. Overall just average.

A rough and tumble, hack and slashing good time. The descriptive story creates amazing visuals that you can see in your mind unlike other stories. This masterfully done story takes you across the globe facing multiple foes and a cast of interesting characters. A great time.
