The memoir is not the story of what you know, it's the story of how you learned it.

Memory into Memoir provides a lively guide for anyone looking to wrestle the unruly past onto the page. In thirteen chapters, Laura Kalpakian provides tools to develop narrative form, scenic depiction, character development, and dialogue. There are chapters devoted to excavating the Family Story and the slippery Truth, especially when telling stories not solely your own. Kalpakian explores the use of letters, diaries, and photographs, and she offers tips for research, publishing choices, and the uses of music. With a broad exploration of technique and development, and a range of reference, Memory into Memoir includes examples, extensive resources, and animating prompts. The seasoned writer, the aspiring writer, and the reluctant writer looking for a knowledgeable, encouraging companion will find Memory into Memoir the go-to guide for a successful, fulfilling writing experience.

Laura Kalpakian developmentally edited my memoir The Red Kitchen. She has inspired countless people to write - novels, nonfiction, and more. Having been on many occasions with her at Red Wheelbarrow events and readings, I could hear her voice - honest and encouraging - in her helpful guide for new writers. Well done, Laura.

Engaging, insightful, and thoroughly useful, Laura Kalpakian’s “Memory into Memoir: A Writer’s Handbook” is essential reading for anyone thinking about putting their memories into book form. Kalpakian is an accomplished novelist, who for years has taught classes of students of all ages how to wrestle their remembered thoughts out of their heads and onto the page; how to get from vague idea to respectable manuscript; and how to move from first draft to polished prose. This book is the distillation of decades of experience in guiding beginning and experienced writers along that path. “Memory into Memoir” is a great boost for anyone longing to capture their own story.

"The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there" (99).

Read each chapter as I revised. This quote of advice will save me as I continue to finish this book. This is a self-paced creative writing course with a reading list. Lovely.

Initially half or so if book has helpful comments and explanation of important techniques. As the text continued it focused on more arcane concepts and emphasized potential publication and writing for an audience (others to read the memoir). Some of us at least just want to write for our own pleasure or edification and self-reflection.
