It’s been five years since Mason returned to work as a private investigator, and he’s just found the balance between his job and family life. Unfortunately for him, there’s a new killer in San Francisco who will stop at nothing to disturb the peace.
The Friday Killer has been targeting students, and Mason’s daughter – Amy – is next on the list. Without the help of his friends on the force, it’s up to Mason to find this killer before it gets personal. Before his own daughter becomes another name in the obituary.

The Friday Killer is the latest maniac in this next Mason Black thriller. “Chasing lunatics around the city is a young man’s game, and I’m closer to fifty than forty.”
When a man asks for his help to find his missing daughter, Mason, for the first time, refuses in consideration for his own family. But Mason just couldn’t help his curiosity, especially when he discovered the first letter of each victim’s name spelled out “Friday.” The Friday Killer.
Things change when his daughter’s friend is kidnapped by the killer and her daughter makes him promise to find her. “To make one promise, he would have to break another [to his wife.]”
The daughter, Amy, was wracked with guilt over the deathly fate of her friend—the Y girl in the Friday cycle—and so would do anything to help Mason catch this killer.
A father-daughter team was in the chase for this ruthless killer.
Each and every time I read a new book by Adam Nicholls I’m blown away by how good it is. Maniac sees the return of one of the author’s best loved characters: Mason Black. It’s a very welcome return too as we’re treated to a tense thrill ride of ups and downs as Mason, somewhat reluctantly, tries to catch the notorious Friday Killer. Things get close to home when his own daughter’s best friend is targeted. Adam Nicholls talent and skill are on full show throughout this engrossing read as he creates scenes of tension that feature some dark moments and some equally tense ones that show how the case spills over and affects his home life. I’ve enjoyed many of the author’s books and each one is well worth a reed. It’s great to see he hasn’t let his extremely high standards slip. A truly five star read.
Book 4 in the Mason Black series in unputdownable. One started, it sent me hurtling through the pages, flying through the chapters and gripped to the very end.
Another fast paced, Mason Black novel. As always, it is a high octane, truly gripping, edge of your seat, nail biting, breath holding thriller that flows, twists, turns and, just as you think Mason has finally apprehended the Serial Killer and the story is nearing the end - think again! If you like crime thrillers you cannot put down, then the Mason Black Series is definitely the one for you. Very highly recommended.
This author is a master of his craft and never fails to keep the reader gripped to the very end. I cannot wait for the next Mason Black novel. Very highly recommended.
Book four of the Mason Black series was worth waiting for. He just cannot resist a good case, even though it interferes with his family life. The plot and characters in this story were very well developed. It’s fast paced and kept my interest til the unexpected, unbelievable end. You won’t want to miss the drama and suspense in this book. *this honest review is based on a complimentary copy from the author*
A new Serial Killer Is on the loose targeting young girls. Given the name the Friday Killer, he tortured, kills and then displays his victims.
When a friend of Mason Black's daughter is taken, Back, now a PI, feels compelled to enter the hunt. As the killings continue, he must question his life choices and promises. Just what and whom is Mason willing to sacrifice in his quest for Justice?
The Friday killer terrorising SF and the police don't seem too bothered about it blocking Mason at every turn forcing him to try to save the young girls of the neighbourhood at the cost of his marriage, his daughter's life and his friendship with SFPD Bill. Heavy going at times with not much progress and it seems like the killer has the drop on him at every turn and he is always playing catch up. Why did Amy die at the end ? That was just cruel.
After so long it is great to have a new Mason Black novel. Kept me on edge from page 1 and I didn't put it down until I finished the last page. Looking forward to the next one!
Adam is an excellent author and the Mason Black seies is outstanding in it's genre. From the get go it was like slipping into a comfy pair of slippers that you just don't want to let go. I am now off to get the next in the series.
The story kept me interested and it was hard to put the book down .The only thing I didn't like was the ending ..I never expected it would end like that. My heart broke for Mason Black.
I've read all of the previous books and can't believe that his daughter died. This poor man has been through so much. Don't know where the author can go from here but will be interested in finding out!
