This photographic study begins with an in depth introduction to the photographers that were traveling and visually documenting Egypt during this 60 year period. A few names I was familiar with, but others were new to me.
The book was divided into eight geographical sections: Cairo, The Pyramids, On the Nile, Luxor and Karnak, Thebes, Up the Nile, Nubia, and Abu Simbel. The section structure emulates what tourists would have traveled if they visited Egypt during that time period. A brief chronology gives the reader an overview of the history of Egypt and for the initiated, a bibliography provides a list of books for further reading. And there is an index of sites.
The heart of the book is the collection of photographs, and it is regrettable that many of the photos from that era have been lost. For the ones included in this book, each one is an intriguing moment frozen forever. And having visited Egypt a number of years ago, I was surprised that many of the temple sites I visited were not all that different in comparison to the photographs of the earlier time. This was an occurrence that I also found when reading Victorian travelogues.
I do wish this book was a series in which each volume spotlighted and explored a photographer from that era. Or, that this book included double the photographs!
