Sarah Girard has a reputation to protect—the paralegal has never failed to serve a subpoena, no matter how reluctant the witness. But this sneaky chef she’s tracking is more slippery than usual.
To get her man, Sarah's going to have to do the unthinkable—team up with tall, smug, and all-too-handsome investigator Burton Worthington. And if they fail, an innocent man could take the rap for arson.
"One Red Cent is a fun introduction to the Miranda Vaughn Mysteries series—a flirty and mysterious short story that kept me entertained and left me wanting more!" Nikki Haverstock, author of the Target Practice Mysteries.
This short story in the Miranda Vaughn Mysteries series was originally published in the Killer Beach Reads anthology (2015).
Sarah Mei Girard always gets her man, but this time she gets a little help! A lively, but way too short trip into the Miranda Vaughn Mysteries world! It is perfect to read when you are wanting a little Miranda Vaughn but you have read all the books in the series (maybe more than once because you enjoy them so much.) It isn't as much of a mystery as the series books, but it turns put to be a difficult task for Sarah and leaves her working with dashing PI Burton Worthington. Serving a subpoena has never been such a challenge! A fun bonus to add to the Ellie Ash series about Miranda Vaughn staring one very frustrated process server!
Eddie Lucus, owner of three popular restaurants and chef including Nom where story starts. Needed to be a witness in rthe arson trial of his partner
One Red Cent is a fun, romantic mystery. Only 80 pages long, it is a quick and enjoyable read. The story starts out in the famous restaurant Nom where Eddie Lucas is the chef. Sarah Girard, paralegal who never failed to serve a subpoena, is on a date with boring, vain, and good looking Christian Morris. Sarah has a subpoena in her purse for the chef. The chase begins as she attempts to serve Eddie on the spot, and he eludes her efforts.
Eddie’s partner in another restaurant, Leo, has been arrested for arson because of the fire that destroyed their restaurant. Eddie refuses to testify at Leo’s trial, hence the subpoena. From here Sarah pushes on through several attempts to deliver the subpoena.
Her efforts make the story fast paced and very readable. The setting makes the reader feel she is there with Sarah in her efforts. The story has a couple of twists that keep the reader guessing.
I enjoyed the read and will read more of the Miranda Vaughn stories.
I love the Miranda Vaughn Mystery series and am constantly checking to see if more stories have come out. This little tale gives you Sarah's side of the story. We still get to see Miranda for a bit, but we get to get into Sarah's head and find out how she thinks, functions, and her quirks. This novella is just as entertaining and intriguing as the other stories in this series. It kept me in stitches, and the visuals that Ellie Ashe gives you in her writing make you feel like you're watching a movie unfold right in front of you. One Red Cent is a delightful addition to the Vaughn mysteries.
One Red Cent is part of the Miranda Vaughn series but it is more about Sarah, a process server, and Burton, a P.I. They work with Miranda who has more of a cameo in this book. This book is just as humorous as the other in the series and it is fun to see how the rest of the team functions. This is a shorter book so it is perfect for an afternoon break or after dinner read. I have already read this twice. It was fun each time. This supposedly simple case of arson is anything but simple. It takes an unusual path.
Such a fun short story about Miranda and the gang. Because it is a short story there isn't much of a mystery, but I did enjoy how Eddie evaded Miranda serving him with a subpoena and the lengths he went to so he avoids being served.
This is a quick read and if you like this series you will like this one too
This is a short story, focused on Sarah trying to serve a subpoena on someone who REALLY did not want to accept it. The ways Eddie tried evading Sarah were funny, and even after recruiting Burton to help her, she still had troubles getting the job done!
This had a glimpse of Miranda, but it was great to read a story just from Sarah's viewpoint. I enjoyed this one! A short, but fun read.
A fun bonus to add to the Ellie Ash series about Miranda Vaughn. It is perfect to read when you are wanting a little Miranda Vaughn but you have read all the books in the series (maybe more than once because you enjoy them so much.) Serving a subpoena has never been such a challenge!
Short and funny look into the daily routine of the office with Miranda and friends.
Short and energetic, this novella was fast-paced and kept me turning the pages. Sarah is a paralegal and one of her jobs is to serve subpoenas – and she’s never failed to drop the papers on the deserving party – but she may have met her match with an elusive chef who is the witness in an arson trial. Without his testimony, the firm’s client – an innocent man – may go to prison for the crime. As much as she hates to admit it, she may have to team up with the firm’s handsome investigator to get the job done. Fun and flirty with some great twists and turns.
