A fabulous book for someone wanting to start running or any kind of exercise.
Lovell goes into depth about the trials, pitfalls and the joy of exercising. Later in the book he lays out specific programs for most stages of running.
Note: Lovell makes a very strong point that one should see their doctor before starting any exercise program—wise advice.
I highly recommend

Running Through Barriers is a great book for anyone looking for that final push to start running or those needing to find the spark once again. Not only does Clint Adam Lovell provides us with insights about his own running journey and inspiring tales from other runners, but he provides readers with useful tools to craft their own story. Lovell's writing style is approachable and friendly, while being packed with scientifically-backed evidence and reasoning.
The book is crafted in two main parts: the first discussing strategies on motivation and mentality, and the second which even provides week-to-week running plans ranging from 5ks to half marathons. I actually devoured this book, reading the first section in one sitting, then returning that same evening to read the second. This is the type of book that I can see myself returning to, either when I need a story for motivation or when I'm planning for an upcoming race.
Lovell spends the first section of this book examining all of the post popular barriers to running and breaking them down into what is really going on. I found this first section to be inspirational, as his contributing authors tell stories of true running triumph. Then breaking into the second section, he helps you create a plan for your life as a runner and avoid burnout. The plans that are written out in this section are also very reasonable and do-able for those new to running, and I would highly recommend those who want to start building up their running stamina.
Although I notably was not the target audience of this book (26 years old, consistent runner, with a masters in exercise and nutritional sciences), I thoroughly enjoyed the refresher on all of the reasons why I should love my running journey. I have admittedly taken long breaks from running despite enjoying my half marathons immensely, and this book came to me in a nice time when I was picking the sport back up.

In this nonfiction book, Clint Adam Lovell (find him on Twitter) demolishes every reason why you thought you might not be able to run and instead provides lots of reasons why you should.
I'm happy he didn't title it "Stop with the Excuses Already" even though he could have. He's much more gentle a soul than that and I'm grateful. But that's what the book does. Chapter by chapter, "barrier" by "barrier," the author dispels any reason (ahem) someone might offer for why they can't or aren't running.
Using real life examples from his running journey as well as that of other people, he dismantles the things we tell ourselves and paves the way for anyone to hit the road or trail for years to come. And once he's done that, he offers a sensible training plan to make sure you meet your running goals.
The final chapter (no spoilers here) is especially needed right now. He has lived a lot of life, run a lot of miles, met a lot of people. And he is generous enough to share the wisdom we need to keep our feet moving.
Although he wrote a "running" book, the lessons he offers apply to nearly any movement form and much of the rest of life as well. I'm so grateful I picked it up when I did. I was gifted this book while in a slump. Little did the giver know how much I needed it. Thank you for this treasure.
