Lord Seeks Wife

Rate this book
Take 1,000 women, add one earl and whip into a media frenzy.

Reclusive academic Lord Noblet de Beeble doesn’t want to get married but his overbearing mother, Lady Caroline, is insisting he must. When he places an advert for a wife in the Situations Vacant section of his local newspaper, the national press pick up the story. A desperate Noblet calls on his handsome younger brother, Henry, to help him navigate the subsequent media frenzy.

Among the hordes of hopeful candidates to descend on the village of Gently Rising is the beautiful and mysterious Mia Wild, who befriends local primary school teacher, Alice Brand. Alice has been looking for something to spice up her life, but getting embroiled in a very public wife-hunt wasn’t what she had in mind.

In a summer packed with suspicious exes, snobbery, social climbers and sausage rolls, Gently Rising will bear witness to a public courtship like no other. But who will come out on top?

'The idea for Lord Seeks Wife was based on wondering what would happen if you crossed the 'open audition' format of reality TV shows with a quintessential English village, peopled with eccentric characters and different social classes. Plus I’ve always been fascinated by the weird and wonderful announcements to be found in local newspaper classified ads - in Lord Seeks Wife that became the Situations Vacant section where Lord de Beeble advertises for a wife.' —Heather Barnett

Disclaimer – I received e-copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Many thanks to publisher.

This was fun and entertaining fiction that revolved around drama and excitement created by Lord Noblet de Beeble’s advertisement in local paper about seeking wife.

The story was about friendship, close-knit community, ambitions, dream, and family.

Setting of quintessential village, Gently Rising, near London was amazing. Plot was refreshing and uplifting.

Characters were the best part of the book. They were all quirky and eccentric. There was jealous, wild and scheming ex-girlfriend, a money grabber woman marrying men only for money, a crazy lady vandalising with paint who didn’t like any outsider in village, village leader, ex-military colonel, school headmistress who loved to smoke, a security guy… all of them had their antics that made all scenes dramatic and hilarious. Only character that had little bit of sense and logic were Henry and Alice.

There were many fun moments and some scenes were really hilarious. The best scenes were interview rounds and local old lady who wasn’t selected for second round locking herself with Noblet in pantry, and climax.

Why 4 stars –

There was nothing as such wrong with the book, it might be just me, but it took me time to get into the book.

Overall, Lord Seeks Wife was refreshing, fun, and humorous fiction with eccentric characters.

I recommend this if you enjoy,
eccentric characters
quintessential village
hilarious scenes
drama
Something to take your mind off the reality
uplifting read

Forget the reality dating shows and pick up this book, I absolutely loved this. I found myself laughing away at some of the antics, I loved the characters even the horrible ones. This is such a brilliant light hearted entertaining read, what’s not to like.

Alice Brand has lived in Gently Rising all her life, she loves it there. She struggled when she had to leave for university to train to be a teacher and once qualified she was back. Lord Noblet George William Chatterton De Beeble, 14th Earl of Pantling, or Nobby to his friends, is looking for a wife, well he isn’t really but his mother Lady Catherine wants him to get married and run the Estate. He decided to put an advertisement in the Gazette under the situations vacant section it read: Thirty something Earl seeks wife to help run ancestral home. If you love the countryside, animals, and large houses, this could be the role for you! P.S. Must have a passion for the novels of Wilkie Collins. Apply in writing, stating qualifications for the role, to the Earl of Pantling, de Beeble Hall, Mereshire. Of course that’s not how the Telegraph mentioned it when they reported it and where Lady Caroline first read of it. Obviously Nobby is inundated with letters. Lady Caroline looks through some of the letters with Nobby, but then leaves him to it. Henry his younger brother comes to the rescue. After asking why he put the ad under situations vacant and not lonely hearts, Nobby explains he doesn’t want a wife, but their mother refuses to run the Estate any longer so wants him married.

Nobby and Henry couldn’t be anymore different, Henry is well mannered and capable, whereas Nobby is as his mother calls him an imbecilic carthorse, he is what I think you would call eccentric. He likes his food and his Wilkie Collins books. He seems to have no other interests.

A further notice is put up to say the interviews will be done on a first come first served basis and will be held in the village hall in Gently Rising, much to the disgust of the villagers who weren’t even asked, especially as it was a day the Brownies had the hall booked. They were concerned with the amount of people who would turn up in the village and the state the place would be left in when they all left again. (Shock, horror!)

Among the candidates we are introduced to Mia who befriends Alice and even convinces her to take part. But who is Mia? She has rented a cottage in the village but disappears on trips around the world. Alice and Mia get on well. Sinead also lives in the village and has her eyes on becoming the bride with her lever arched folders full of any information she can get her hands on in which to help her be successful, but what is she really looking for is it love or money?

When Henry finds his girlfriend Saskia in a bit of a compromising position he dumps her, but she doesn’t take no for an answer, and is determined to get him back one way or another.

There are so many quirky characters in this story, and so many comic moments that will make you laugh out loud. If you want something to relax with and have a chuckle I would highly recommend this. Everything just comes together so well. Who will win Nobby as a future husband? Or should i say who will Nobby choose to be his wife.

This is a perfect 5 ⭐️ read if you like a bit of romance, with some fun great characters, grab a copy of this, it will not disappoint. I would love to read more about Gently Rising and the characters. Thank you to @SerpentineBooks for an eARC of this book. All opinions are my own and not influenced in any way.

Lord Seeks Wife offers the reader what it says on the tin: Lord Noblet is looking for a wife, and he approaches the issue in an unconventional way. Dating women is obsolete and time-consuming; auditioning them is more efficient.

If you are looking for something uplifting to read, that will take you far from social distancing and covid rules, this is the book to do it.

Lady Caroline had done her duty and supplied her husband with an heir to carry on the family name and traditions, but her oldest son was letting the side down. Lord Noblet de Beeble isn’t interested in getting a wife, never mind an heir to follow him. So he does what one does if they require something, he advertises in the local paper. When the tabloids get hold of the story, it goes viral, and the hordes of applicants begin to arrive at this sleepy hamlet of Gently Rising.

There is a slight breather, to get to know a little about the core characters, that live in this quaint picturesque village. Just because they are local doesn’t mean they don’t want a chance to be the lady of the manor too.

The giggles start early on in this book with no holds barred to get noticed. I loved getting to know the vibrant band of colourful characters, from the downright money grabbers to the social wannabees. I don’t want to go into great details about what happens, just that there are lovely goosebump moments too that put smiles on my face.

The characters keep bobbing back in my mind and make me giggle. This author is super talented and produced a brilliant debut, followed by this, a completely different venture.

Fun and uplifting with twists

Lord de Beeble, known as Nobby, is looking for a wife – at his mother’s insistence. Where better to start than by advertising in the Situations Vacant section of the local paper. So begins a witty, uplifting read as thousands of women apply, and interviews commence.

Nobby’s brother is there to help him, the villagers are torn between the income to be gained from the arrival of thousands of hopeful women, and the disruption to their normal sedate lives. From the thousands of candidates, we focus on a few, watching to see if they will achieve their dream, and wondering whether Lord de Beeble get his “happy ever after”?

Gosh I enjoyed this. A light fun read with shocks and surprises around every page. A well written novel for those days when you want something light and uplifting, but fulfilling, to read. A great second novel from Heather Barnett; I also loved her first novel Acts of Kindness.

This is such a fun book that will put a genuine smile on your face.
Noblet, “Nobby” de Beeble is saddled with a ridiculous family name and running the country estate when all he really wants to do is study Wilkie Collins and be left in peace. Instead he responds to relentless pressure from his mother by advertising for a wife.
A national newspaper picks up the story and applications come flooding in. Nobby’s brother Henry steps in to help him devise a way to whittle down the candidate and come up with some challenges to help Nobby choose.
Some of the local women enter the contest, ambitious social climber Sinead, lovely school teacher Alice and village newcomer, glamorous Mia.
Add to the mix the village of Gentle Rising, full of eccentric neighbours and busy bodies.
Alice is my favourite character. Warm-hearted and friendly, she loves her life in Gentle Rising but is longing for a bit of excitement. Mia steps in an gives her a makeover, throws her a birthday party and gives her a much needed confidence boost. I was rooting for Alice all the way through the book.
I also loved Henry’s scheming ex-girlfriend, Saskia, who gets herself into all sorts of trouble as she tries to win Henry back. She manages to upset pretty much everyone in Gentle Rising.
There are some great set pieces that are genuinely funny and some characters who are both completely bonkers and utterly endearing. This is the kind of book that 2021 definitely needs more of!
Heather Barnett has a real gift for comedy – I read her debut novel, Acts of Kindness, earlier this year which was also a great read full of warmth and humour. I definitely recommend adding these books to your reading piles.

This is an uproarious novel full of eccentric characters in an English village. No matter how many I’ve read that are set in a bucolic setting and I can’t get enough of them. Loved everything about this book. Be it a quirky idea around which the whole story revolves around, outlandish villagers and their idiosyncrasies. To top these off, a gaggle of social climbers and shutterbugs descend on to this village, throw their lives into disarray, and ensues uproar.

Alice is a lovely person. Her friendship with Mia is heart-warming, bringing out the best in Alice. Would love little depth to her character and the other main characters but can understand why it couldn’t be possible with these many characters. This brims with rib tickling moments but the dinner scene, interviews for the potential wife, and the climax are outstanding. It’s been hinted from the beginning that Mia, but I couldn’t guess what it was and the reveal was a good one. Noblet and Henry are great too.

Saskia and Sinead are another set of outlandish personalities. Chuckled when Sinead resorted to use her pet Coco to go one step further in achieving her goal and the ensuing chaos was funny. Saskia and her devious ways are completely bonkers and leads her into tricky situations even lands her in jail. She manages to upset everyone in the village. Everyone gets what they deserve at the end which is sweet.

Admire Barnett for creating this hilarious story and bonkers characters. Loved her witty writing which had me chortling throughout this. I wish she would write more books set in this Gently Rising village.

Overall, I would strongly recommend this and I am onto reading Barnett’s debut.

I laughed a lot whilst reading this book, from the very first chapter in fact, which made me immediately love this book. And I loved that a small part of the book was from the point of view of a horse 😂 Page 114 actually had me laughing out loud very loudly.

I am a massive fan of reality TV, dating shows and romance so I had to sign up to this tour. And adding a royal spin to it was just the icing on the cake.

This book is set in a proper country village, with similar sorts of vibes to books by Cathy Lake and Nicola May. And I found myself loving so many of the characters, even if some I loved to share.

I did find the characters of Saskia and Sinead difficult to distinguish between at times (and I think the Author did too as I'm sure she put the wrong name on page 232...), Elaine and Lorraine also got muddled in my head, and I also kept getting the brothers confused as I was reading.

This would have been a 5⭐ had it not been for one of the main characters deciding to smoke weed when they haven't before and blah blah blah 🙄 I'm getting SO sick of seeing this in romance books. I feel like every book I've read recently has included characters smoking cannabis and I find it so offensive.

Other than that one thing though, I absolutely adored this book and I'm desperate to go back to Gently Rising in the future so please say there'll be a follow-up?? The ending was perfect 👌🏼

There’s no waiting around in this one it gets stuck right in as you meet wonderful characters. Some set out for the advert and others not knowledgable about the advert but intrigued never the less. The writing style instantly gets you hooked and you appreciate the shuttle humour. The funny remarks grew and you could just imagine the chaos unfold if this was actually true. I was fond of Alice and i loved how it was a reminder to everyone no matter how old you are your never too old to find love.

There’s a few odd characters that completely suit this story, they’re quirky, far fetched and just brilliant. Although the chapters felt really long they each had some sort of an event that flowed and you got more depth of the overall plot. I loved the fact that men got the opportunity to attend the interviews too. This isn’t like my usual fast paced style read but it’s one that’s warm and cosy.

The author builds up the background of all of the main characters so you can vividly imagine what they’re like. It’s easy to keep track of who is who so you don’t get too overwhelmed. I understood the book overall and it was adventurous and funny and really something different. I loved that it was modern and up to date with the world of TikTok and making sure to not only seek one gender. Although this wasn’t one of my favourite reads I am interested to know what other books the author has written.

There is an almost nostalgic air about this story. It has a full cast of quirky, sometimes eccentric characters who add to the fun of the read. The humour runs throughout the book from start to finish and the pace of the writing never lets up. At the centre of the story, it turns out there are a few surprises which I had not seen coming.
I also enjoyed the different agendas of the women who all stepped forward to apply to be the wife of the Lord. Some were just social climbers, others have a specific quarry in their sights and Alice, it seems, is an almost accidental applicant. You have a feeling you know what is going to happen almost from the start, but this does not spoil the story. Take down a copy of this book from your bookshelf when you fancy a light, fun escape into the quintessential English village of Gently Rising.
In short: An escapist, fun romcom
Thanks to the author for a copy of the book.

They say that a good man is hard to find, for that matter, so is a good woman. What better way to find that perfect martial partner than to open it up for applications, even if you are being forced into it. Well actually, I’m sure there are many better ways, but will our bachelor find his perfect life partner among the hordes of women that are descending on his cozy hometown.

Lord Seeks Wife is a super fun lighthearted romantic comedy with plenty of laugh out loud moments. I loved the premise, the setting and was taken in by its quirky and eccentric characters, who each make the story so entertaining and enjoyable.

My first book by Heather Barnett, I really enjoyed her style of writing and how she makes you feel you are also a part of the story. I had a great time watching it all unfold from the sidelines and it was just the pick me up I needed. I throughly enjoyed this book and would recommend.

What a fun read!

When Noblet De Beedle has the ingenious idea to put an address in the local paper looking for a wife, he has no idea the amount of chaos he is about to bring to not only his life but the lives of everyone in the village Gently Rising.

Cue gold diggers, crazy women claiming to be related to royalty, models and the village teacher who knows who will win the title of Lady De Beedle.

This was such a funny book! I loved the banter between Nobby and his brother Henry. The different POVs of the different characters gave a humorous insight into the minds of a little village and it’s occupants.

I liked the way it was written so there was humour, fun and a classic romance that reminds me of a Hallmark movie. If you are looking for an easy, fun read about finding true love then this book is for you!

Noblet de Beeble (Nobbie) has been forced to look for a wife by his overbearing mother while he is perfectly content studying the works of Wilkie Collins. Described as doughy, Nobbie does not want marriage, he just wants to be left alone. His brother Henry helps him write an advertisement for a wife and they are soon flooded with letters. Alice Brand, a meek schoolteacher, applies but she is interested in Henry. When Henry helps her in the kitchen, they see something in each other. Alice realizes she does not want Nobbie, she wants Henry but she knows she is out of his league.

Henry makes his intentions clear to all when he kisses Alice in front of his family after she tells them she is not interested in marrying Nobbie. He is relieved as Alice was the frontrunner. Now he can go back to how things were before his mother tried to get him married.

Unique Take on Romcon Books

Sort of The Bachelor meets Regency romance. Contemporary Duke's mother is anxious for him to marry and provide an heir. Stuffy book worm, who loves the works of Willie decides to take out an ad in the local newspaper. His more widely brother assists in organizing the many rounds of interviews needs the cull the women ,and men, who apply for consideration as the lucky winner. Quite an assortment of contenders, both local and distant, descend upon the quiet village with hilarity and chaos galore!

Solid read

I was happy that this book didn’t follow the linear path I expected. I don’t think it gives away too much to say that I think the ending allows characters to be true to themselves in a most refreshing way. Of course that’s not to say it’s entirely unique just unique compared to what I expected. Through that, it was easy to enjoy the characters and the antics of those in the village. I would say my major annoyance was how fast relationships formed but that’s pretty standard for a romance book. Regardless I very much enjoyed the street and the writing was easy to follow.

4 1/2 stars rounded up to 5.
While the premise sounded entertaining (think The Bachelor in an English village), it surprisingly took me almost 1/3 of the book to really get into it. But once I was- I couldn’t put it down. Thoroughly fun and entertaining. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Safe, clean and heartwarming.

The kind of story that makes you smile and cherish every small thing achieved by this large set of characters.

My only complaint is that we make theories about everyone's future but there's no epilogue.

Thank you to @RandomTTours for my copy of this book.

This sounded like a cosy, fun read when I saw the synopsis and it didn’t disappoint. Noblet, the bumbling Lord of the Manor, advertises a vacancy for a wife in the paper and all hell breaks loose when the small village of Gently Rising is taken over by hundreds of hopefuls wanting to be the next Lady de Beeble.

I loved the humour in this book, the dry sense of humour & sarcasm of Nobby’s mum is just brilliant. There are many fabulous characters in this book, it’s impossible not to love them all. It’s a really easy comfy read and I will definitely be looking for more from this author.
