After adoring the last arc in this series- I don't think I gave a single volume below 4.5 stars- this new arc completely changed in tone and how the characters behaved.
It tried to be too 2024. Up until this point, I could believe I was in a Viking world. Yes, the last arc got a bit silly and ridiculous at some points, but I could excuse it because of the strong character development and plot.
But this was way too over the top for me. It had slang words that have just cropped up within the last few years. It had on-the-nose, political language that made zero sense for this setting and time period. I felt the author was trying to make a statement, and he didn't care at all for maintaining the world and characters he had created up until this point.
I'll keep reading because I've come to love these characters, but I hope we just stick with the story in the future and not try to educate modern readers on modern issues.
I don't have the slightest idea what I want to prove by continuing this series, however since I've made it this far, I don't know if I have the courage to just DNF it. Was it a good volume? it was ok. Is this a bad thing? possibly. Vinland saga in the "just ok" tier is something since farm arc's ended. And bru I loved that arc.
I think the biggest problem I have with this story is how much the characters lose depth given the author's need to talk about the world and plot. That wouldn't be a problem tho, if the story didn't have this coming-of-age feel since its beginning.
Thorfinn is a man now, but his naiveté becomes annoying every time he talks about Vinland. Wich made me feel sad cuz I was kinda right to assume on the earlier volumes that this would be transformed into a "one piece esc" story, but with a NatGeo twist. I hope when they arrive things could change a little bit.
Also... I hate to be that person, but oh my sweet lord baby Jesus, the female characters are so boring.
I like hild tho, but she's also a one-note character. Gudrid became the bland wife really fast and her relationship with Thorfinn is... Dry? Yeah, I think dry is a good word to describe it. I was thinking something like "meaningless" but that's mean. I'm not here to claim they're should be making out or something like that, no no no no... It just... Why? Why her? I understand why she likes him even though I lost interest in her when she became the Genki girl in love archetype... But it's like, could be anyone in gudrid's place.
Look! It's time for my MC to form a family so...
Here,
drawing, drawing. scrib, scrib
that's gudrid. she's cute... and funny.
We deserve more than this, ppl. Especially from the author who gave us PLANETES.
Remember planetes? Exactly!
We deserve more.
Vinland saga has a lot more issues I could complain about but I don't have the energy. So that's it. It's just ok and that's kinda sad... But the name is Vinland Saga, right? Let us hope when they arrive all this messy narrative makes sense.
Surely someday, I will find a place where I can live as myself. You’ll see, mother...
this volume was interesting. super curious to see how thorfinn tackles the next arc. although a great end to the current arc, things seem to be much more dulled down. his whole realisation of what he can do to make vinland a non-violent place after his conversation with halfdan was a little bit too naive imo. nonetheless, very intrigued to see how the next arc plays out.
also lowkey wish he married hild instead 😭 i was actually rooting for them so much but it's FINE ugh
I don't think I've ever seen Thorfinn talk that much... Cordelia's storyline is so cute. I loved how the other women immediately showed solidarity with her. I'm already annoyed by Ivar, hope he dies soon. Hildr is perfect as always. I hope she gets more page time.
A whole volume where the gang prepares themselves to set sail to Vinland! An unexpected cute character also makes his/her introduction, while Thorfinn is also forced to reflect on his politics about violence.
It's been a while since i read a volume of Vinland Saga, what a great series, it needs to come out more often. I laughed a lot while reading this, the comedy was on point. The story flowed very smoothly and when i realized, the volume was over and now the waiting starts again, shit.
There're a couple new characters introduced and the were amazing. The interactions with Thorfinn and everybody were superb. There'are very diferent poits of view when it comes to weapons and i must say, no one's wrong, it's hard to take sides.
Hope finishing this without any regret "-"
A relaxing and witty Vol. It's incredible how Vinland combines introspective moments and comic moments within the story. Also Cordelia's story moved me a lot and I hope it's a great addition to the story, the whole Halfdan and Thorfinn thing was very funny, the dynamic between Thorfinn and Gudrid is still one of my favorites, a 10 for that very beautiful cover.
This marks the true beginning of the Vinland dream! Thorfinn’s philosophy of a land with no enemies doesn’t just mean peace from war; it means peace from hatred and erasure. And Cordelia’s inclusion is proof of that dream starting to take root. She’s strength without violence, and grace without apology. One of the quiet revolutionaries of the story. This makes Cordelia as one of the most beautiful testaments to Vinland Saga’s heart: its quiet but powerful commitment to dignity, humanity, and peace.
I can’t believe I finished! I could cry my eyes out from the sadness of finishing, and the happiness of experiencing this masterpiece. I hope Thorfinn is doing well in Vinland. I hope he makes it there safely and is able to create his country free of violence. I can understand if some fans are disappointed in the cliffhanger ending, but it leaves much to be desired and much to the imagination. I’m content. I love Thorfinn more than anything!

Oi, what's with that woke propaganda?! A trans giantess?! Anti-sword laws?!
We finally get some fan service and it's a naked dude?!
It's a good thing at least a real man like Ivar managed to board the ship without letting go of his sword. He's not like those other spineless liberals, he'll make Vinland great again.
