Great read, Explaining the techniques directly with no non-sense details. Speed reading is a journey, you won’t read the book and wake up the next morning speed reader. You must put the time practicing, that is what Peter addresses right on.. highly recommended for those of us where reading is a daily essential ingredient of survival like the air we breathe…
Really good tips and tricks for becoming a speed reader. I always wished that I could download books directly into my brain, like the in the Matrix movie. I guess this is the next best thing for now 🙂
Useful, practical manual on speed reading; no subvocalizing, optimize eye movements, word chunking, strategical skimming, key-word identification, idea visualization and dynamic comprehension, syntopical reading; good to get to know some technical terms for something you have been doing for quite some time now. Admittedly, this only works for non-ficton; but hey, you don't want to strategically skim The Brothers Karamazov, now do you?
"Since most people currently can’t separate subvocalization from comprehension, they are locked in at a rate of about 400–500 words per minute. Moving beyond that rate requires you to embrace that your mind and eyes read faster than your mouth."
I'd give 4-stars for the material especially for the beginners but less than 1-star for the eBook format! ** Comments on book material: good collection of practical tips on speed reading. Yes there are some repeated parts and fillers but generally it's good material to start explore this skill.
** Comments on eBook formating: it's very bad! No table of contents (in Kindle menu) or even worse there is no titles/headings/subheading! All the texts is the same format which made it a chunk of text! It's one of the worst reading experience that I had! Ironically it's about speed reading and the format it totally against that! Especially what mentioned in Ch2: Pre-Reading.
This is an okay book; it has some nice principles that I was able to apply while reading the book, and it is set up in such a way that the topics are comprehensible. It lacks some depth though, and is mainly a collection of tips and tricks to help you read faster and understand more. The whole section about pre-reading threw me off a bit, since the author just throws techniques at you instead of making a stance about one approach and covering that in more detail.
There are few ideal methods does pique my interest if I wanted to be more knowledgeable. It is not hard but it takes a little bit effort at a time to get better with your reading skill.
it was not enough to read books on speed reading, I had to reach a point where it was extremely important for me to be free to read as much as I wanted. This book reviewed what it takes at a time I was ready to listen.
This book is a quick read, yet comprehensive. It covers its subject totally in a practical way. You will know what you will need to do to improve your reading speed. It will take a lot of practice but you will know where to start and how to do it.
There are 2 parameters Speed and Comprehension It's a practical guide to understand about speed reading. But need more information on how to read the technical documents
Very good guide to improve, the way you read, I tried all exercises and found out that they actually work. I would recommend it to anyone who need to read a lot but doesn't have a lot of time. Very good book.
Rereading this book the 2nd time to prepare for summer school. While reading it, I was also practicing the skill like eliminate subvocalization, chunking words etc. Actually it’s effective and it’s possible since I only had to spend 2 hours to finish this book, not bad for me (around 600 wpm?)
This is my first time reading Hollins, and this was an excellent short read. To summarize the book well, to learn how to speed read one must know how to re-read.
Although I Use Speed Reading This Book Was Very Useful to Me
I guess I first picked up speed reading techniques, consciously, or unconsciously in the 7th grade and honed these skills in high school. By the time I got to college and grad school these skills were very important to me. However, I have always wanted to read as fast as possible while retaining what I had read. Peter Hollis’s work was a good refresher course, but more than that, his discussion of the value of pre-reading, and techniques to classify information, and to retain it through various techniques, such as mind maps and knowledge trees was extremely worthwhile. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve their reading speed and comprehension of what they have just read.
