Schoolteacher Erica Rowe works with at-risk teens in a special program at the school, and she’s trying to save the program which is in danger of closing. Erica lives with her sister (who has cancer) and her niece and she has an adorable dog, a Goldendoodle named Ziggy. Trey Harrison is a K-9 officer who is forced to take time-off after an injury. King is his wonderful canine partner and companion. Trey will be working with Erica as her volunteer assistant while he is recuperating in the small-town of Pleasant Shores near the Chesapeake Bay. At first the two don’t always see eye-to-eye but there is a definite attraction there that neither can ignore.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable and lovely romance with so much more to it than just the romance. The story was filled with many endearing characters who really made the town come to life. I enjoyed the at-risk teens that Erica and Trey worked with. I really liked the storyline with Julie who is recently divorced and trying to move on while her ex is getting ready to marry a girl half his age. The two dogs, King and Ziggy, were simply wonderful and adorable and added so much to the story. I loved the setting in the beautiful and cozy beachside town of Pleasant Shores. A very entertaining and emotional read.

Cottage at the Beach by Lee Tobin McClain is the first book in her new The Off Season series.

Trey Harrison is an injured K9 cop sent to the small town of Pleasant Shores to recuperate and volunteer with a local academy behavioral support program for at-risk teens. His job and future rest not only on his physical recovery but also on his mental and psychological recovery and his performance as a volunteer.

Erica Rowe is Trey’s neighbor in Pleasant Shores. She is the primary teacher for the behavioral support program. She’s initially not impressed with Trey’s interactions with the teens but warms to him as he warms to the kids.

The school’s non-fraternization policy isn’t the only thing holding back a relationship between Trey and Erica, despite their strong attraction to each other, he wants kids and she can’t have them.

Cottage at the Beach is a great way to start a series. Ms. McClain has introduced strong, believable characters and an interesting plot. The setting is beautiful and is used smartly. This isn’t just a heartwarming romance. The author touches on some important aspects of being a woman in a time when we have access to more information than we ever have. Do we really want to know everything, and if we do, what will we do with the information?

I throughly enjoyed this novel. I rate it 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it to all lovers of heartwarming romance.

My thanks to the author, HARLEQUIN – Romance (US & Canada) and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book. However, the opinions expressed in this review are 100% mine and mine alone.

I think this author isn’t for me. The narrator didn’t help, but the schmaltzy, cheesy dialogue and narration didn’t work for me. Neither did the caricature way the bad guys were presented. Or the way the author purposely had the characters speak vaguely - so of course the other would misunderstand them. It was all over when the hero proposed even though they had a big misunderstanding at the single date they went on. 🙄

So, no more by this author for me.

The Off Season series is up to #6 and I have read a couple from the middle of the series. Enjoying Lee Tobin McClain's sweet and clean romance, I decided to go back to the beginning and listen to the rest of the series. I am glad I did as I really enjoyed this first book, Cottage at the Beach. Trey Harrison is a K-9 officer who was injured on the job. His chief has arranged for him to stay at Hero's Cottage in the small town of Pleasant Shores to recuperate and volunteer with a local academy behavioral support program for at-risk teens. This is where he meets Erica Rowe, the teacher responsible for the program. Both Trey and Erica begin to have feelings for one another, but her main objective is to appease her boss, the miserable principal, who is out to shut down her program.

There were things I loved about this book and things that frustrated me. I loved how Erica and Trey worked with the youth and got them involved with helping the community. I loved how their relationship grew and developed and I loved getting to know the various kids and seeing how much they wanted to be accepted and help others. I was heartbroken whenever someone made derogatory comments about them being troubled kids, criminals or a bad influence. I felt their hurt when they overheard those comments and lashed out. I know that the treatment of Trey's dog was a plotline in the story, but I didn't like reading about it. I also detested the principal, whose main role was to increase enrollment at the private school to offset the many scholarship students. I know that really happens in private schools, but as a retired educator, it always bothers me to hear about people who are running schools with no experience working with kids and seemingly, not even liking them. The story of working with the older residents in town was sweet. There is a theme of a woman not being able to have children "ruining" any chance of getting married or having a relationship, which is something that seems out of touch. I did enjoy this story and getting to know the town of Pleasant Shores and some of it's residents. Themes of animal treatment/training, troubled teens, judging others, multi-generational friendship, helping others, dealing/living with cancer and romance are all part of this story. If you enjoy a wholesome, sweet contemporary romance with some serious issues, I recommend you pick this book up and give this series a try. The audiobook was narrated by Sandy Rustin, a new narrator to me. I enjoyed her performance for the most part, but her male voices left much to be desired. At times I didn't even realize who was supposed to be speaking.

Bella storia con due cani adorabili e alcuni momenti assai commoventi. Ci sono un sacco di personaggi che poi avranno il proprio libro, come accade spesso con le serie romance, ma all'inizio ero un po' spiazzata da tutti questi nomi.

Very few authors create a book world that makes me want to pack up everything I own and move there, but this author does it time and again. This new series is set in a small beach town on the Chesapeake Bay, complete with small-town politics, troubled teens, quirky neighbors and an unruly dog. It’s also the home of Healing Heroes, a program where injured first responders can come to heal. Police officer, Trey Harrison, and his K9 partner, King, are the program's most recent clients.

Trey is only interested in doing his rehab and getting back to his job in the city. He doesn’t want to make nice with the neighbors. He doesn’t want to become a part of the community. And he definitely doesn’t want to work with at-risk teens or their prickly but beautiful teacher, but that's a condition of him being part of Healing Heroes and staying in the beach-side cottage that will be his home for the next several weeks.

Erica Rowe has her hands full. She’s the sole support of her niece and her sister who is fighting cancer, her dog is badly in need of obedience school, and her program teaching troubled teens is in danger of being shut down. The last thing she needs is a cop with an attitude who's working with her teens against his will.

Love them or hate them, all of these characters will leave their mark. From a recently divorced grandmother trying to find her new purpose and a teen trying to figure out where she fits, to a school principal who needs to crawl back under the rock he came from and troubled teens bonding with senior citizens, all of these characters bring the story alive with their distinctive personalities. In no time at all I was invested in every aspect of this multi-layered storyline.

This one deals with some hard life lessons wrapped in themes of forgiveness, healing, community and second chances. Beautifully told through flawed, complex, relatable characters, the strong emotions are a direct hit to the heart, making this a remarkable, unforgettable read that you won’t want to miss.

I found this rather soap-operaish. Typical handsome man with issues meets gorgeous (and repeatedly mentioned) tiny girl with issues. Neither can manage to share with the other but are madly in love regardless. Throw in several supporting characters (also with issues) several dogs (adorable) insurmountable (supposedly) problems and a crisis or two, and tada! we're off to a predictable conclusion. I presume I was underwhelmed because I don't typically read romance. For those who do, this is a clean, fast read.

Cottage at the Beach is a good read. It kept my attention throughout most of the book.

The one drawback I had with the book is there is more than one storyline in the book. I was not sure how Julie and her encounters with her ex-husband related to the story of Erica and Trey.

There were some surprises in the book which kept you wanting to see what would happen next.

All in all this was a good book.

Sweet romance (wish I had been warned before I started), about an injured cop, freshly divorced, coming to stay at a small coastal town. He’s set to rehab and volunteer until his disability checks start or he goes back to work. Next door is a teacher with a niece and sister battling cancer. After maybe 3 kisses, 1 date and not much time spent together, they love each other. While there may have been some chemistry, it was mainly them trying not to be a couple and put the program for at risk students in jeopardy. No real relationship was formed between them.

Whoohoo -- another new series by Lee Tobin McClain and I'm in at the very start! She is a newly discovered author for me -- read my first book almost a year ago. And Cottage at the Beach is the kind of complex, emotionally-charged story I've come to expect from this author. She pulls me in and makes me feel all her characters' struggles -- like their lives matter and I'm invested in them. I don't know how she does it -- my heart's too busy tripping all over itself to figure it out. I'm just glad that she shares her talent because I love to feel my way through a novel.

While this is largely Trey and Erica's story, the author gives us a few other points of view as well as she sets up the town dynamics and the secondary characters who live there. In fact, there's one really intriguing secondary plot about a recently divorced 'older' woman and I get the feeling her story will carry over through the rest of the series. I'm really looking forward to that.

So, we have a very moody, somewhat surly injured cop (brooding hero fans you can start swooning now!) and a no-nonsense teacher who doesn't have time for a volunteer who doesn't want to be there. Woohee -- clashing wills and zinging sparks collide in a fireworks of toe-curls and butterflies. Absolutely loved the angsty romance. So many battles to fight before a victory can be claimed and I was riveted through it all.

Have to admit I fell hard for another hero as well. King, the K-9 officer in limbo after his partner is sidelined. Sniffle. King made me cry. Then there's Ziggy, the goofball doodle who is all about having a good time. He made me laugh. I'm a happy reader when fictional critters are involved in the plot!

A stellar start to an exciting new series -- The Off Season -- and thrilled that the books are being released in a timely manner. Reunion at the Shore comes out in June! Woot!

K-9 Officer Trey is healing from an injury and until he can go back to work hes unwillingly working as a vollenteer to keep an eye on troubled teens. Erica can't have children of her own and decided to take her maternal side towards caring for troubled teens as a teacher. Both seem to clash in the beginning but slowly start to soften towards one another. But things cant stay perfect when things in their lives start to take a turn.

There is so much going on to keep the readers hooked. I love that hate to like kinda romances and slowly but surly seeing them soften to one another. I loved seeing that romance that was forming between the two problem is that being that they work together it can cause issues. Getting to know the characters though the book you can't help but root for them being together and having everything their way. I loved that there was a bit of drama here and there to keep things interesting. I loved seeing everyone work together and helping one another it was just sweet to see. Overall this was a cute clean contemporary romance novel and I really enjoyed it.

K-9 officer Trey Harrison just wants to recover from his injuries so he can get back on the force, so he's focusing on PT and reluctantly volunteering to help a special program for at-risk teens. The teacher for that program is Erica Rowe, who's dealing with her own issues, not least of which is the outcome of surgery that protects her from the cancer that killed her mother and still threatens her sister, but also means she'll never be able to have children herself.

These two characters slowly begin to see how much they have in common, including their support of the at-risk teens in that special school, especially in the face of the antagonism of the school's principal and some other townspeople.

Trey wants to focus on the present and the future; Erica isn't as ready to forget her past and what it means for her future: their future, and when she concludes they can't be together, her words seer Trey's heart. Is there no way for him to get through to her? Is there no way Erica can set aside her pain and look forward to a different kind of life?

Trey is a amazing man. When he is sent to Pleasant Shores for rehab his life will change. Erica is truly a remarkable woman. The way she takes care of her family and the kids at the school is wonderful. When Erica meets Trey she doesn’t want him working with her. Watching these two become closer with help from there dogs will keep you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next. You will feel God working throughout this wonderful story. Lee Tobin McClain is truly a wonderful inspirational author. I am blessed to have the opportunity to review this book for her. I would give this book a higher rating than a five star review if I could.

Disappointed in the book. It has all the ingredients I like. Dogs, small town, seaside cottage, romance but the characters were lacking in depth and the book seemed kind of juvenile. And then the author threw in religion, almost as an after thought. The first quarter of the book, was pretty much typical romance novel as it progresses it becomes more and more religious, no where on the cover, or the description does it indicate it's a Christian romance. If it had I wouldn't have picked it up, even with the dogs. It's the first in the series and I won't be reading the others. I'm just glad I borrowed it from the library instead of buying it.

This is a story of discovery. Trey Harrison learns things about himself he never knew. By meeting Erica Rowe who opens up a new world. Lee makes this story fascinating by dealing with 2 hard issues. They are a type of cancer that is very hard on families especially the women. This story of discovery will teach you about patience and second chances. The bravery shown is amazing to read. Fighting cancer is hard to do. The love that develops between Trey & Erica is great to read. Lee does a amazing job with this book. I look forward to the next in the series. J

Cute but not my type of romance. Dragged on for a bit and then wrapped up in 1 chapter and the epilogue. Don't get me wrong it was a decent read and some may find it good. In my opinion this book could've been better if the two weren't so back and forth and then the minute they're finally together it's bam! Happily ever after and no problems with anything they've been complaining about in the entire book lol. Just seems like the author got bored and decided to end it where it seemed convenient. Just this gals opinion 😉

I absolutely refuse to read a book where a dog is being abused. I made it through when the dog was taken from his loving handler but when the next handler “knocked him down and kicked him in the chest”, I threw the book in the trash. I don’t care what kind of happy ending this book has I am not ever going to read another word by this author.

McClain has once again given us a wonderful story.
I love the way she writes and is able to draw us into her story with a injured cop, a hurting woman, and some
teen kids that really needed a second chance in life.
I especially loved Erica's dog Ziggy! Oh my, such a handsome dog too! I wish that I could've had all of his energy!
This is my favorite place to be is on the beach! Don't you love the sound of the waves to relax you and sing you to sleep at times? I know I do!
She makes me want to go there now! I wish I could however: I can't at the moment so this lovely book will do.
McC;lain has described some of the scenes in the book that I felt like I was really there!
I think Erica is a wonderful character. I love how the author shows that she is human and that she feels that she needs to be the one in control. She is the one who holds everything together or so it seems.
There were times that I wanted to reach in through the book and just give her a hug to remind her that someone does care.
God does care. He loves us unconditionally and He asks us to lay our burdens at His feet. I know it's hard to do but it can be done. This is where trust comes in. Trust is such a fragile thing.
But what we choose to do with it it's up to us. God is good that way. He leaves it up to us to come to Him.
I'm so glad that I have Him in my life. I don't know where I'd be without him.
Trey and King were a couple of awesome characters too. I loved watching Trey come around so to speak.
A lot of the time attitudes doesn't get us anywhere in which Trey found that out the hard way.
I enjoyed reading about Trey trying to just get through life the way he knows how.
I was rooting for him because I knew he could do it.
It's not up to us where we end up at times. It's where we were meant to be and where God places us where He feels that is best for us even though we don't see it at first and then after awhile, I smiled with joy when Trey realizes that is where he's meant to be.
I did feel that there were two different stories going on here and at times it left me feeling confused as to what was going on. It kept going back and forth between Trey and Erica and then Julie and her grand kids.
Here is where I can relate to Julie in trying to connect with my teen. It's hard believe me.
I feel like sometimes the only way that we can connect with each other is through our music. I'm so glad that he took right off with that. . I'm blessed that he is a good young man now.
The thing that I felt most important was that I felt God working throughout the story from the author's heart. I could tell she enjoys writing these stories for us readers.
I do like how she deals with some tough subjects in real life and doesn't beat around the bush about it.
Forgiveness was the most important part of this story.
I just wanted to mention that the supporting characters were wonderful too. Especially the dogs!
They are the real heroes!
I will be looking for more from Lee in the future! Her books are so inspirational and wonderful at the same time.
I'm feeling blessed that I got to read this wonderful story by Lee. I think what makes her stories so great is that she writes from her heart and with Jesus at the wheel to guide her along.
I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars because the cove will make you want to jump into it and sweep you away with the story that's inside.
My thanks to the author/Netgalley for a complimentary copy of this book.

Trey Harrison is an injured K9 cop, on unwilling disability leave, with his disability benefits not yet kicked in. There's also the problem of the issues that let to the impulsive mistake that led to his injury. He and his dog, King, rushed into a meth house when he heard a baby crying. This also placed at risk the officers who responded when he did call for help. His chief was already concerned about his behavior; now he's sent him to "volunteer" in a program called Healing Heroes. He'll be working in a program for troubled teens, a non-profit program based at a private school, serving teens not at all from the same social circles as most of the students--the students the school wants. It's not a program Trey feels is a good fit, but he needs a way to get by till his disability kicks in.

Erica Rowe is the teacher in charge of the program. She's also taking care of her older sister, Amber, who has had a difficult struggle with cancer, giving Amber and her daughter, Hannah, the home at the beach in the town of Pleasant Shores that Amber has dreamed of. Erica dreamed of being a mother, and her dedication to the troubled teens program became even greater when a hysterectomy to protect against the cancer that not only threatens Amber, but also killed their mother, ended the chance of having children of her own.

Their first meeting, an accidental encounter on the beach, is not promising. Erica doesn't think a K9 cop used to encountering teenagers as criminals is a good fit--exactly the doubts that Trey himself has.

But Erica has to save the Behavioral Support program from the principal determined to shut it down, and Trey has been told he has to succeed at this rehab assignment if he wants his old job back. It starts off rough, but they do both have motivation. And much to both Trey and Erica's surprise, he does connect with these teens, seeing in them something of his own troubled adolescence.

The romance between these two makes lots of sense. The problem is that the tension mostly comes from them not really communicating. They each at different times say something to the other about something that's a real issue for them, and is very unhappy when they don't get the response they hoped for. Except they talked around the problem, rather than actually sharing the crucial details that would let the other understand. I wanted to knock heads together.

They're good and interesting characters, and surrounded by other good and interesting characters. Or even annoying and interesting characters. Julie, a recently divorced older woman who owns the Healing Heroes cottage, is also a mother, and grandmother to two teenagers, Caitlin and Sophia. Mr. James is a WWII veteran who is also very good with the kids from Erica's program. His son Kirk is in the same age range as Julie--and her friend and employer at the local bookstore, Mary. Mary and Kirk may have been an item sometime in the past, but neither is saying anything. We really get the sense of a full and active community in this tiny island town, which for me really adds to the enjoyment.

Recommended.

I bought this audiobook.

This was a "sweet" read. I love the Chesapeake Bay area. The characters had real world issues that we can all relate to on some level. K-9 Officer Trey Harrison is injured and unable to work at his job when he is sent to Chesapeake Bay to heal. He is part of the "Healing Heroes" program. (I love the idea of this program.) He is allowed to stay in a beach cottage rent-free and work with at-risk teens in a program designed to build these kids up and hopefully keep them out of trouble. This is where he will meet Erica Rowe. She loves children, but she will never be able to have any children due to a preventative surgery to protect her health. Trey is not happy to be there, and Erica is not happy with him, which causes a great rift between them. This is a story of love, forgiveness, understanding, empathy and being able to putting others needs before your own. I also love his K-9 dog, King as well as Erica's out of control Goldendoodle, Ziggy! If we all cared as much about the plight of others as Erica does in this story, the world would be much a better place. This is a clean romance with a moral to the story as well. You will be introduced to a lot of characters in this book which she is setting up for future installments in this series. I highly recommend this book if you want to read a clean romance that will leave you satisfied with a smile on your face.

This was the first book that I have read by this author. I won it from a contest on Facebook. I love everything about this book. The small town it takes place in, the main characters, the storylines, how it went back and forth between Erica, Trey and Julie. I loved all the teens in the story as well.

This is a story of personal growth for all the characters Erica, a school teacher works with at risk teens at the academy. She has to deal with a principal who gives her nothing but a hard time. She also has to deal with the fact that she is unable to have kids and believe that she still deserves to be happy and find true love. Trey, a police officer who was hurt in the line of duty, comes to Pleasant Shores to volunteer in Helping Heroes. He volunteers with Erica at the Academy. He grows emotionally, physically, mentally, and finds out that people believe in him even when he was younger. At first he has a poor attitude , but eventually he comes to love working with the kids.
Eventually , Erica and Trey form a good working relationship. This is a story about second chances and believing in yourself. A story of love, about giving people the benefit of the doubt.

I absolutely loved this book and can’t wait to read the next book in this series.

When an injury forces K-9 officer Trey Harrison onto the sidelines, his only thought is getting back to the police force where he belongs. And he’ll do anything to make that happen—even volunteer in a small waterfront community, just to please his boss. But no one ever said Trey had to enjoy it…

Since the surgery that destroyed her dreams of having children, schoolteacher Erica Rowe has grown even more dedicated to her work with at-risk teens. So she doesn't need some cop with a chip on his shoulder putting the program's future in jeopardy. But when Trey finally connects with the students, Erica's heart melts. And when, in a tender moment, he admits he longs to have children, her heart breaks. She's convinced he'd be better off with someone who can give him everything, but she can't seem to shake the hope that maybe love is enough…

This was a very sweet read. This was another book set in a place called Pleasant Shores. In this story you meet a woman named Erica Rowe who is a teacher working with at risk teens. You also meet a guy named Trey Harrison who is a K-9 police officer.

Trey gets injured on the job. He has a K-9 named King that he worked with. He gets sent to Pleasant Shores for rehabilitation. He is given the assignment by his boss to volunteer to work at the school where Erica works with the at risk teens. He doesn’t do well in the beginning. Eventually he starts making progress with the students and with Erica. He is asked to train Erica’s dog Ziggy. Erica once suffered an illness and she found out that she couldn’t have kids. She doesn’t see that a relationship with a guy like Trey would work. This wasn’t a spicy 🌶 read but it was a very sweet read for me.

Living on the shores of Lake Michigan and celebrating our Golden Wedding anniversary, I was looking for a summer beach romance. Unfortunately this retired teacher, who has taught all grade levels in both public and private schools did not finish reading the story. Did not feel a connection between the injured K-9 officer Trey Harrison and the freshly divorced school teacher Erica Rowe with a niece and sister battling cancer. Definitely did not like the arrogant principal of the school, plus the misunderstandings with the dog. Other choices to read.

Looking for a clean, inspirational read? Look no further than Cottage at the Beach. I enjoyed my brief time in Pleasant Shores. I love small coastal towns! The sense of community is strong. It's a wonderful place to visit for those in need of healing and rest.

Recommend to readers who enjoy clean, contemporary romance.

I won a copy. I've expressed my honest opinion.

It was fine!
A good light read for early summer (or for waiting for summer to begin). I liked it in many ways more than a Debbie Macomber etc book. There was no sex scenes, and church is actually acknowledged, which is harder and harder to come by. So I’d probably read this author again, but I’m not running to look up what other books she’s written, either.
