OVERVIEW: A captivating series, full of romance, mystery, and intrigue. Think "Sex and the City" meets "Nancy Drew".
Emily Parker, a beautiful young widow, decides to take over her late husband's private investigation business in the affluent small town of Paradise Valley, hoping to solve the mystery of his murder. With the help of her close circle of friends and the sexy new police detective in town, Emily tackles other murder cases while discovering clues that her late husband wasn't who he said he was.
Follow along on the exciting and suspenseful mysteries as the murder cases are solved by Emily and her interesting group of friends.
Debra Burroughs writes with intensity and power. Her characters are rich and the stories are full of compelling suspense and real romance. She can be found, most days, sitting in front of her computer in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, dreaming up and writing about strong women, their relationships with men (good and bad), involved in exciting, mysterious, and romantic situations.
I chose to rate this series as a five star review, because I was interested enough to read all three books in one week. I have to say, I started to read Debra Burrough's books, because I was interested the fact that she's an indie author and a USA Today/NY Times best-selling author. Go, Debra! I loved the first two books, the friendships, action, and sweet romance. I did think by the third book, it was a little redundant with the facts about what previously happened. They were reiterated over and over, and I found myself skipping the facts I already knew. In a way, that's good. It reads as a standalone, but for readers who read from the beginning, it was a little frustrating. I like her 3rd person writing style. It made me feel like the characters were real. All in all, an enjoyable read!
I enjoyed these books. They were not amazing or anything, and character traits were irksome but overall it was fairly easy to just take them lightly and enjoy the stories. I guess one of my main problems was being able to know what the outcome was going to be? It's hard for me to guess what's going to happen in a story, usually, so to say that I easily saw where these stories were heading is saying something. Again, not the most annoying thing, just not the best stories.
The potential of a good book but for me doesn't quite work. Story line is good but dialog is sometimes just not realistic. Not how folks really speak to each other. But maybe the romantic readers want to think so. Just sounded goofy to me. But I hung in there and the murder mystery was wrapped up with a good spin.
I thought this was a great series and would love to hear more about Emily and Colin's cases. Also I would love to see what happens with Maggie and Peter.
Debra Burroughs has a great style of writing. It conveys information in depth and captures the reader very quickly. A small town in Idaho is the stage for action involving love, espionage, covert action, and the interaction of good friends. Although each of the books is complete on its own, the story carries over from one book to the next. This set of the first three books is a real bargain, and it also includes a novella that adds more meat to the story. The story includes violence without gore, romance without graphic sex, and captures beautifully the relationships found in a small town. The lies of the book titles involve deceit, direct misinformation and sins of omission. Each of the books involves a different set of crimes, but many of the same people are involved throughout. All the characters are people the reader should be familiar with, and the story progresses as if t was going on in your neighborhood.
I am an avid reader of romance and mysteries, never a day without my escape, regardless of how long or short the time is for that particular day.
Having never read any of Ms. Burroughs’ novels, I had no idea what to expect. I downloaded books 1-3 of the Paradise Valley Mysteries boxed set. They did not disappoint.
The characters are believable and likable, the stories plausible, and the journey really, really a great way to escape the stresses of daily life and career.
I was sorry to come to the end of these books and plan to continue.
Thank you Ms. Burroughs for the many hours of enjoyment!
Looking for a good mystery series to read over the holidays or that vacation that's coming up...this could be just what you want. Follow Emily as she tries to get her life back together after her husband dies. Taking up the role of P.I. and finalising his last case brings a sense of fulfillment . With her friends help she starts to investigate what happened to Evan and finds more questions than answers. I know others have stated that they didn't like the repetition of facts but the books would have been and published seperately first off and helpful to those who needed a refresher.
I read them all in one day. I had to know everything. Emily Parkers husband was murdered. She went from being a real estate agent to being a private eye. She met a sexy detective who had secrets of his own ..when they met things heated up and the mysteries were flying. Emily gradually finds out who killed her husband. And sparks fly between Emily and Colin , the detective. Love this series
This three book series is well written and has well developed plot lines. There are twists and turns galore. The characters are defined and interesting. The author kept the story exciting and the relationship between Emily and Colin sweetly romantic but just when the action could have gotten more than romantic with all those kisses and tingles bursting, the scenes change! Nicely done Debra Burroughs.
As I've been writing mini reviews as I finish each book in the set I won't repeat myself. For the third installment in the mysteries we find out about the late Evans death and more or should I say the whole story and of course with a who done it we find the culprit too. The main focus is on a suspected sex trafficking ring so an advisory warning of some risky scenarios.
I have the full series in two box sets but for a brief interlude I will be picking up something else, so tbc
The Paradise Valley Mysteries Box Set ~ Paradise Valley Mystery ~ Books 1-3, by Debra Burroughs, author is the start of a great mystery series set in Idaho.
The books included in this anthology are: The Scent of Lies ~ Book 1 The Heart of Lies ~ Book 2 The Edge of Lies ~ Book 2.5 The Chain of Lies ~ Book 3
I enjoyed all four of these titles and highly recommend.
Someone killed her husband and she wants to know who
A nicely done cozy series interesting characters and action. Like many cozys you have to suspend your common sense at times but is part of what makes a cozy a cozy. I would have given it 5 stars except for some minor inconsistencies about timelines between the three books and maybe few too many menus.
I enjoyed the first 3 books I couldn't put it down. I am ready to start book 4. These books are amazing. It all starts with Evans death and the lies just keep exploding. It's like real life you tell a lie, then another to cover that one till it snowballs. I highly recommend this book.
I really enjoyed reading this series of mysteries. Emily is a P I who has a knack for solving crimes. She has a great group of friends, who you will enjoy getting to know. Looking forward to reading the next one in the series.
Emily takes over her dead husband's job as a private investigator. While solving crimes, she continues to work on the mystery of his death while trying to move on in her life.
I really enjoyed reading these books. Each book could stand alone but as a group their even better. They are back to back so the books seam to flow. I highly recommend reading them.
Good clean mystery with just the right amount of romance. Love her books! Only complaint would be that they should be in order in the volume. The last is #2.5 and it would have been nice to read it in sequel had I realized it was not .
Not a bad read but the "gushing" and similar expressions got on my nerves. It is more of a romance than a mystery. The author tends to repeat prior info in case you hadn't read the previous book. Maybe they were stand alones and they decided to lump them together.
This series was great, it was a page turner. You wanted to know what was gonna happen next or you felt like you were going to miss what was going on. Going to read the rest of this series it's a great read.
Loved getting to now the characters and the storylines were great. I’ve lived in Idaho in the Boise area and could picture the areas they were in and made the story so much more fun for me.
Great story line and mystery with compelling and believable characters with romance thrown in too. What’s not to like. The stories are very hard to put down. I had to make myself turn the light off and go to sleep. I kept wanting to read one more chapter.
Paradise Valley is a sleepy little town where nothing goes wrong. That is until Emily's husband is murdered. Join Emily and her friends as they solve is murder along with other mysteries that had decided to come to town.
I thoroughly enjoyed this series and will most likely continue reading them. The only downside was reading about all that food...it made me hungry! Karen
