Antoinette “Toni” Rose Lobo had never seen a ghost, but didn’t think it was unusual that her father did. At the age of five, Toni also didn’t think it was strange that she had a small, humanoid like creature who looked very much like a mythical demon for a best friend. He had red skin, two small horns, and glowing red eyes.
His name was Little Wolf.
His mouth featured two sharp little fangs. His body was muscular and well formed. She wasn’t supposed to let anyone see him, but if they did, all they would see was a hairless red rat. Toni liked the idea that he was her special friend that only she, Mommy, and Daddy knew what he really was.
One day she asked why Daddy could see the ghosts but she and Mommy couldn’t. “Daddy’s special,” Mommy answered. “That’s why he can see them and we can’t.”
Toni thought about that and it bothered her. “How come I’m not special?” she finally asked.
“Because you’re not old enough,” Mommy answered. “Will I be special when I get old enough?” “Maybe,” Mommy told her. “Maybe.”
I want to thank the publisher and NetGalley for letting me read this book. The review is my own opinion. I so love this cover, that's what caught my eye! How cool is that? Wow!
This story starts with Toni, a 14 year old girl that has a playmate that looks like a demon. He is Little Wolf. Normal people see him as a pink rat. Toni's mom doesn't have the gift of seeing ghost but her dad does. He is Melvin, or Wolf. Little Wolf is Wolf's familiar and protects the family. Today Toni started her period so she can see ghosts. Now her dad will train her to battle them.
Meanwhile, Roger is also a young teen, male, he started seeing ghosts. An old woman saved him from the ghosts but started to train him but really wanted him for his blood. He escaped.
The story is about the teen kids learning to deal with their new gifts, what ghosts can do, how to stop them, and how to protect yourself. The teens meet and have to help others. It's a good teen/young adult ghost story.
It's cool how they get a familiar, how they kill ghosts, and how they end up fighting together. Enjoyable!
Dan Foley writes about the age old battle of good and evil not as an end of the world thing but as the personal Armageddon of individuals. He has written three books that feature a man called Wolf. The books are INTRUDER, WOLF'S TALE, and TONI'S TALE. Melvin Lobo, AKA Wolf, is a creature of the Louisiana bayou with its tales of voodoo, spells, and curses. These books are not a series in the classical sense where one book picks up where the previous one ended.
In INTRUDER, Wolf is a submariner dealing with a WWII ghost. If you have a basic grasp of things mechanical and/or digital, you will probably be able to get past the technicalities of the story occurring on a nuclear sub. You will find it a good introduction to Wolf and his way of dealing with the supernatural. It is a horror story.
More to the point of the strange happenings on Bayou La Pointe is WOLF'S TALE. We find him spending a lot of time with Grandmère Rose and his girlfriend Charlotte while dealing with the evil surrounding them. This book is more of a must read before reading TONI'S TALE.
In TONI'S TALE, we meet Wolf and Charlotte's daughter Antoinette “Toni” Rose Lobo. Her parents knew when she was but five years old, Toni had inherited her father's abilities. By now the Lobos lived in New Orleans with its ancient graveyards and voodoo heritage. It was important that they teach young Toni to not share the things she sees.
TONI'S TALE is atmospheric from the very first page. If you have ever visited the French Quarter, in New Orleans, the feeling you got walking through Jackson Square, or St. Louis Cathedral, or St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is the feeling you will get from this book. The ghosts and spirits are real, and so are the demons. Order yourself some Café du Monde coffee, brew a pot, and sit back to a satisfyingly hair-raising read.
Toni’s Tale is a coming of age story of a young girl, Toni Lobo, with a special gift; the power to see, talk to, and sometimes fight with ghosts. Her father is well known to the ghosts in New Orleans for the same power. This tale takes us through Toni’s training, to coming into her power, and eventually helping a young man who is new to town learn how to use his power. Together they must face a big challenge.
This young adult novel was an enjoyable read and honestly I thought it ended too soon. There was a lot of build up and then the end seemed rushed. Despite that, I really liked the characters and would be happy to read more tales of Toni Lobo.
ARC provided by @Netgalley. Novel will be available in July.
It's hereditary, seeing ghosts. Toni gets it from her father and her gift shows itself on the day she gets her first period. Toni and her father see all the ghosts, not just a mist here and there. These ghosts want to possess them, and others with this gift and so Wolf, Toni's Dad, begins lessons to teach Toni how to use her gift and protect herself. Along for the ride is Little Wolf, who is the familiar of Toni's dad. I think Little Wolf was my favorite character even though he never says a word. He's a little red creature with horns and fangs who will protect and help Wolf's family and anyone Wolf loves. Anyone who see's ghosts has their own similar familiar. You just gotta love these impish little creatures who really care about their wards. The ghosts aren't the only dangers for the family. There is a human out there tracking a young man and he unwittingly beings that danger to this family. We have good humans, bad vampirish humans ,bad ghosts, good ghosts, possessed, and the awesome little familiars. Quite a cast of characters.
This would be an especially fun young adult read. As as long-time grown up I found it to be an enjoyable, easy read. #netgalley #Toni'sTale
