Kress and Brohn set out to track down the five members of the Fallen Kress had to leave behind on her last adventure. Along the way, they find themselves drawn into the plight of the Unsettled, an oppressed underclass being targeted for extermination by the Cult of the Devoted.
Plagued by internal divisions, some of the Unsettled want to negotiate with the Devoted, while others are planning something more dramatic, namely, blowing up the skyscraping Goldsmith Arcology and whoever’s left in the city along with it. Caught in the middle, Kress and Brohn have a decision to make. The path they choose could save—or else end—the lives of millions.
K. A. Riley is a writer of speculative and science fiction, dedicated to creating worlds just different enough from our own to be entertaining, intriguing and a little frightening all at once. For Riley, writing isn't a job. It's a laboratory where readers can wander into a land of ideas; it's a playground where they can scamper around, giggling, gasping, and freaking out to their hearts' content.
Riley is the top-secret pen-name of a NYT and USA Today best-selling author.
I love a series that grows slowly enough that you can get to know each character as they're introduced. When they make appearances and you can understand the relationships and relevance of the interaction. K.A. Riley has a great writing style.
My only critique would be just a little more proof reading. While I'm typically not bothered by small issues. Half the time I wouldn't even notice, but towards the end of this book there are some missing words that cause pause.
I took a break from the series for a couple months and I’m happy that this segment has a better storyline than the previous one. Still, the entire series is so drawn out and with one final book, I’m not sure how it’s going to get wrapped up with a clean finish. There are more new characters unlocked and I still don’t understand the point of making Meridienne speak only French (yet her brother doesn’t). I skip over every line she says. There’s some action but it’s mostly a build up to nothing and is just a segue for Kress to tap into new abilities. The Unsettled have most of the action while Kress retraces her steps to collect the Fallen. It’s fine, just not overly exciting. Half the book is describing rubble and bones and debris. Like okay! We get it. Now we’re on our way to find a feather that has changed genetic code and we have one book to wrap up that and the Lyfelyte and save humanity….
I went into the previous and this book hoping to see a stronger, more evolved Kress, especially after how she was portrayed at 17. Back then, Kress was fascinating—she could pass through walls, implant dreams in others’ minds, and communicate telepathically with Brown. But in this book, she feels weaker, often struggling with headaches, and lacks the growth I was hoping to see. It’s disappointing to see her stagnant and not evolving as I expected. Her complaints and seeming inability to fully use her powers make her feel diminished. I’m currently reading the last book, and this feeling hasn’t changed—she still seems lost and no longer possesses the strength that once made her such an intriguing character. It’s frustrating when a character I once admired for their power and potential feels like a shadow of who they used to be.
For me, this book did not disappoint. Riley elegantly penned this volume with the deepest care of portraying Kress and Brohn in character. As readers we see Kress in moments of insecurity but also growth. This volume is full of adventure and drama.
This book finds Kress and later on Brohn, meeting and becoming friends with a group called the Fallen. We learn more about the mysterious Meridienne when her younger brother Corbin is introduced into the picture. This young boy full of interesting bird facts and knowledge appear innocent at first. But we soon learn this is more than what meets the eye. (Quite literally)Him and his sister hold an important part of the puzzle. While new friends have been introduced, it’s important to note that old friends and family revisit.
Overall, I enjoyed this installment and look forward to the last book.!

I am so sad to know that the next book doesn't come out for another 3 months. I read every day during any free time I have. This series has been amazing. I hope the next book isn't the last. After reading this, I don't know if anything will be as good.
Loving ALL the new characters and alliances!!:-). There is a TON of action in this one and the new revelations are INTENSE to say the least….you DEF won’t want to put this one down for sure!!:-). LOVED IT!!:-)
This book seemed to drag on..So excited to see Kress and Brohn again, but the book was repetitive to the last book. Will keep reading! I need to know what happens in the end.
