First off this was one of my most anticipated books to release this year, and I’m grateful and thankful to have been given the opportunity to read the advance copy from Hannah!

This review is spoiler free! This was a five star read and my favorite book of February 2022! I also read this story in less than 20 hours I was that excited about it 😅♥️

Before I dive deeper into my review I would like to point out major content warnings for this story. If you’ve read the other books in Blackwater then you know the foundation of Addie’s life regarding her abuse. This book is told from her perspective, so the reader will witness many of her scars, some that Skye doesn’t even know about. This book is about the healing journey of a survivor of child abuse, torture, assault, and sex slavery. To add there are recollections of weapons used during rapes and mentions of past revenge porn and gang rape.

Remember that it’s okay to take a break if it gets too much. Other content warnings include blood, nightmares, and explicit consensual sex scenes.

I was a bit nervous for this book, even though it was highly anticipated. I didn’t know how graphic Addie’s memory would be with the rapes. I was wondering if it would be similar to Mindf*ck series where Lana was explicitly recalling the flashback of her rape, or would it be glossed over, never going into much detail. Hannah gave a good medium where it was enough to give you context of what happened to Addie, but not heavy on the details.

This book featured Addie’s past from her childhood to teenage years to the events that happened in Legacy. The book then goes into the present day of the story with Addie going to the Narodnaya pack to join Nik.

I would also like to take this time to say fuck everyone who fucked Addie over, especially her mother and Allan and her brother.

Addie and Nik had great chemistry, probably some of the best chemistry I’ve read in awhile, They love each other so much, and their journey together was beautifully written. Nik has so much patience during Addie’s recovery.

The romance was comforting to read. Nik stayed by her side, even through the darkest hour. You can tell they love each so much, and you can see how much Addie wants to be with Nik in all ways including physical. Their physical relationship was soft and understanding. Boundaries and communication and all that good jazz!

Addie taking back her sexuality was a path that I’m so glad she went on. It had its ups and downs, which made it all the more realistic. When we see Addie younger in her life, she’s so open and free despite what happens around her. It contrasts the image we see of Addie from the first three novels.

Addie was an inspiration! She was proof that you can overcome even the darkest traumas, not be a 100%, still survive, and that it’s okay to not be perfectly healed. And to have that reminder you’re still worthy of love! I would also like to give Hannah kudos to have Addie go to therapy and deal with sessions that sometimes she came out frustrated after finishing while other times Addie felt accomplished. I’ve been in therapy for almost three years, and I don’t always have perfect sessions, so it was nice to relate to that!

The support system that Addie had at her side was great. I wish more people had a Nik, Skye, Tasha, and Lulu in their support systems. Especially Tasha. I loved her in Legacy but she was so great in this story as well! She’s with Addie every step of the way while making jokes and being passionate about violence lol.

The added depth and world building with Lulu and the elementals was creative, easy to follow, and I just wanted to know more! You get to see Lulu’s relationship develop slightly with Dimitri as you learn bits of their pasts. Lulu’s friendship with Addie was so loving, as they both learned to care for one another.

Overall Hannah did an fantastic job at tacking some of the hardest issues people can face, and make it a journey of a uphill battle, constantly climbing to the mountain’s peak. Even at the end, Addie still has drawbacks. She still isn’t 100% healed, but she’s healed a lot since the first page, and that’s the strongest statement from this book. There are days where it’s going to be tough, maybe even for a long time, but you’ll heal as time moves forward. It may not be perfect or right away, but put in the work, communicate how you feel, and keep your head up. You’re gonna make it!

Thank you so much for Hannah for writing this beautiful story about Addie and Nik! (I wouldn’t mind more books about them 👀).

While this book can be read as a standalone I HIGHLY recommend that you read the previous books in the Blackwater Pack series. First because they are fucking awesome and everyone should read them, but it also gives you a phenomenal introduction to both Addie and Nik, not to mention the fact that you will already know there are going to be triggers in this book. Having said that, if you decide to read this book by itself then please make sure that you check those trigger warnings if that’s something you need.

I have been so excited for Nik and Addie’s book ever since Hannah announced that she was going to be writing more books in this world and damn did she ever deliver. This book was not only everything that I could have wanted it to be, but it was so much more. We don’t just pick up with Addie going to Russia with Nik, the book actually starts with a young Addie. So we get to see some of what she goes through growing up, her meeting Nik, and then the fallout of her returning home to tell her family that she has met her mate and she’s leaving to be with him. Then there’s an overlap of some of the events from the first three books. And while this is all a relatively large chunk of the book, it’s so necessary, because while we get some insight into what Addie went through in the first three books, this really gets more into it. You see exactly how horrible her mother was and that Linden was an entitled, sociopathic asshole his entire life. Then we get to the present timeline and things really kick into gear.

I need to talk about the side characters for a minutes, because y’all…I love them so much. Dimitri and Lulu have this incredible chemistry that is just waiting to combust and I cannot wait for them to finally get their shit together and admit that they love each other. Thankfully their book is next, so I won’t have to wait too long. Now, Natasha is quite possibly one of my favorite characters. This woman is such a confident badass that honestly, I just want to be her when I grow up. And the best part is that she is absolutely the best friend that Addie could have in Russia. I loved seeing their friendship develop and how close they end up being by the end of the book.

What is there to say about Nik and Addie except that they are utter perfection for each other. Addie has been through so much in life and has such a traumatic past that it’s no surprise that she has some difficulties and things that trigger her. She has a lot of scars, both literal and psychological, and it takes some incredible strength to be able to come back from what she has been through. Addie literally thinks that she’s broken and that she will never be whole and what Nik needs and wants. And this is why I think that Nik is absolutely perfect for Addie. He doesn’t care that she has scars, that she’s had an absolutely shitty and traumatic past. He loves her for who she is and is more than willing to wait for however long it takes for Addie to be comfortable and to realize that he’s not going anywhere. He doesn’t want anyone else. It’s Addie for him, and always will be. I don’t think Nik could be any more perfect. He is the quintessential alpha with an ooey gooey center that is reserved for those that he loves.

Before you read this book prepare yourself to have all of the feels. I laughed, I cried, I raged, and definitely cussed a few times while reading. Not to mention the parts that had me cheering and there were also a couple of parts that made me gasp and my eyes go wide from the shock. Like I said, all the feels. This book has a lot of pain, loss, and trauma, but it’s also full of strength, love, and hope. I just really want everyone to read this book so they can fall in love with Nik and Addie as much as I have. What are you waiting for? Go! Go read it now!

Wow. Just wow. Seriously. This book made me feel like I did the first time I read Sanctum. Beautifully broken moments turning into magnificent healing and an empowering saga. Reading about Addie as more than a mother meant so much to me, seeing her and being reminded that I am more than just mom but I’m still Tracy (something my bestie yells at me everyday). Seeing how her life was beyond the pov of Skye. Watching her heal and fight for herself was so moving.

Nik, well… Nik is Nik and worth every moment of waiting for this book. I love him so much. They alpha, the dad, the mate. He is amazing and his support of Addie was everything.

What I also loved beyond words was getting more of Tasha, Dimitri and Lulu. I’m dying for Dima and Lulu’s book. It’s gonna be amazing! I need it nowwwwww.

This book is choke-full of dealings with trauma. And if you know the story of Addie Markham, you'll wish she finally gets her happy ending.

She was the mother of our previous protagonist in the series. She went through a lot, bringing up her daughter in an abusive environment, sacrificing herself and more just so that her daughter never lived the same life she did.

I was scared initially before reading this book. Even reading about the terrible things that happened to her through her daughter's eyes already wrecked me and now we are about to see it from her own eyes. But the good thing was this book skipped those painful period in her life (it went from when she was 19 to 38 years old) and I was mighty glad for that. It was hard to read even what they alluded in here.

As far for our MMC... eh, he's okay.

Final thoughts, it was a heavy read and I don't think you should read it out of order. K bye..

I was so excited and honoured to be given the ARC book for the fabulous Scars, book 4 in The Blackwater Pack series. Honestly words can't describe how utterly perfect and beautiful, and emotionally heartbreaking this read was. Hannah is a miracle worker and has literally left me speechless. Addie and Nikolai story is one read you will never ever forget. I love the fact this was a two pov read between Addie and Nik too.

" 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙤𝙣𝙡𝙮 𝙙𝙚𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙨 𝙄'𝙡𝙡 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙮𝙤𝙪, 𝘼𝙙𝙙𝙞𝙚, 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙗𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙖𝙛𝙚."

The Blackwater Pack series is my favourite wolf shifters read without a doubt. Scars is  Addie and Nikolai story, and we all knew this was gonna hit the heartstrings badly. If you have read the other books of this series, which if you haven't I would start there first, cause trust me you won't regret it. But in the past books we get little snippets from Addie's past, but she doesn't reveal a lot for certain reasons. After reading Scars, you see how phenomenally strong Addie is and wow I admire this woman so much, she has a heart of gold, and does everything in her power to keep the people she loves safe. The outrageous stuff that Addie had to deal with, and have it all kept to herself was utterly heartbreaking. I was literally crying so much through this book. At one point I seriously wanted to climb into the book and just give her a big hug. Nikolai wow what an absolutely amazing man, I am so glad that Addie has someone like Nikolai, he is such a patient and trustworthy bloke and I seriously wished I had someone like Nik. The love between these two gave me chills of delight and happiness. I loved that we got to find out more on both Addie and Nikolai's pasts and how everything ended up the way it did. We get the answers we were all wondering,  and fills in the holes of many questions.

𝙉𝙞𝙠𝙤𝙡𝙖𝙞 𝘿𝙖𝙨𝙝𝙠𝙤𝙫 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙖 𝙢𝙖𝙣 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙬𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙗𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙 𝙞𝙣 𝙜𝙖𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙢𝙞𝙡𝙚 𝙖𝙨 𝙝𝙚 𝙡𝙞𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙘𝙝 𝙩𝙤 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙤𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙨 𝙝𝙚 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙙.

I loved the fact that Hannah included past characters too, I was very happy to have all the characters back, but then there were a lot of old characters that I seriously just wanted to be rid of again and made me hate them even more, if that even possible. Hannah Mcbride is an outstanding writer and the world building and the love she puts into these characters is breathtaking. I loved being back into this world where I can disappear for a few hrs. It's left me thinking about this book ever since I finished it. Emotionally shattering, and awe inspiring and passionate read that is out of this world. Also just some advice make sure you have lots of tissues you will need them.

While I did love this book, I think it would’ve benefited from being split into two novels. I felt as it was, Nik and Addie were separated for a lot of the book. I would’ve liked to see their relationship progression more drawn out on page.

There was a lot of focus on pack politics and side plots which I felt detracted from the storyline of Addie and Nik’s rekindling love. Honestly, I didn’t GAF when it was Nik’s POV and he was handling pack business.

I just think since I loved this couple so much, as a reader I wish the novel was more focused on them and we had more time with them during the actual book.

✨✨✨✨4.5 Stars✨✨✨✨

description

My past was a legacy of scars, some visible but most unseen.

Adalynne's story is heartrending in its tragedy and strength. This book is definitely for mature audiences though since it dealt with a heavy topic as Addie struggled to move past a history of sexual assault and trauma. I commend the author for handling Addie's story with grace and dignity, for ruthlessly editing her life into a masterpiece. We got to see glimpses of Addie's background and story in the Blackwater Pack trilogy preceding this but this book focuses solely on her and Nikolai.

His hands came up to frame my face, his expression fierce. “I will chase you into any darkness, Adalynne. There’s nothing that can separate us again.”

The Plot
To fully grasp the storyline and appreciate the characters, it is important to read the first three books of the series. Scars picks up where Legacy leaves off and even starts in Addie's past, showing her as a girl and the antagonism she faced from her mom and brother. It then speeds up to reveal the first time Addie and Nik encounter each other, the fateful night they discover that they're mates, followed by the gut-wrenching breaking of the bond. We're able to see some of the previous events in the books from Addie's point of view and then starts with her decision to follow Nik to his pack in Russia.

“What’s past is past, Adalynne. Leave it there. We can’t change it, but we can find our own future.”

The Characters
Adalynne was such a strong character, even when she saw herself as scarred and broken. As Skye's mother, she showed strength before but here, we see a different kind of strength from her as she struggles against routine nightmares and panic attacks; the depression and fear that haunts every corner of her life. The abuse that Addie suffered, both emotional, verbal, and physical was painful for her and even painful to read but it was her truth, a part of the past that she carried and it was with Nik's help and those of her friends and family that she made her way forward, step by step. In a way, I could see the respect the author showed Addie by not glossing over her painful past or moments of panic, how she journeyed through that process of healing as her love and hope for a better future led her to Nik.

“But broken things can be fixed. The scars left behind are proof that, yeah, I was broken. But I also healed.”

I'm sorry Remy but you have some stiff competition when it comes to Nikolai. He quickly became my favorite male character in this series. Nik's no knight in shining armor but more akin to the Batman of the shifter world. He finds amusement in the torture of his enemies (those who hurt Addie, at least) and his first instinct is bloodshed over diplomacy but he is also perfectly suited to Addie.

Nikolai Dashkov was a man who would bathe the world in gasoline and smile as he lit the match to protect the ones he loved. And by some miracle, I was still one of those people.

As they both struggle to move past their torturous history of the road not taken, one of the biggest hurdles they face is letting go of the guilt that plagues them. But this story sees Nik, the Alpha who's killed countless rivals and enemies, care for Addie with touching gentleness and love and it was so gratifying to see Addie embrace her future with Nik as she recognizes her own courage.

If there was one person I would subjugate myself for, it was my mate.
I might be an Alpha of the first pack of shifter wolves ever recorded, and I might command thousands, but there was one person who would always ultimately rule me.

Potential Triggers:

My Rating System:
⭐️ This is me wishing it were possible to give zero stars
⭐️⭐️ Wasn't terrible but it was lacking, probably won't re-read
⭐️⭐️⭐️ It was ok, could be better
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I really enjoyed it and will probably re-read
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was absolutely amazing and I've adopted it as one of my favorites

💫 Ratings are subject to change. I will sometimes go back and adjust a book's rating upon further consideration.

Very hard to read but so beautiful.

The blackwater pack series in one of my favorite shifter romance, there’s tons of triggers but it deserves all the hype.

This book is about Skye’s mother, Addie, and as usual Hannah McBride didn’t disappoint. Her writing is top-tier superb and I’m in awe with the way she writes love story that are so believable and soul shattering.

Addie is such a strong and amazing character and my heart was breaking reading about all the hardships she went through with the Long Mesa Pack. I absolutely love how raw and honest her journey to “freedom” was, she way she overcoming her trauma and past was so well written.
Nik, our hero, is truly the perfect love interest for her and I’ve teared up a little bit when reading how supportive and strong he was for her. Just amazing.

I just didn’t like the part with a certain character (Lulu) because all of the action was leading us toward her own book, and it just felt like fillers for me, I wanted these scene to be taken off and just concentrate on Addie’s because it was her story but yeah, I didn’t care about Lulu’s situation.

. Fated Mate
. Second chance romance

Wow. What a ride Addie and Nik's story was..
I have to admit, by the end of Sanctum and Prey, I was so miffed with Addie. I thought she could use some of the the steel spine her daughter so abundantly has. I learned differently by the end of legacy, but I saw the true depth of her strength in Scars. Fate has dealt her a harsh hand but she always came through ten times stronger and somehow more compassionate. She's the hero of this story..
I loved Nik from the moment I first saw him in legacy. Nik had his own "scars" to deal with, but his total acceptance of Addie, the way he was always there for her only endeared him more to me. Theirs was a tumultuous journey from the beginning to end and it all came together to conclude quiet beautifully..
Some enemies and friends, both old and new made an appearance and there were some truly delightful scenes with some of my favorite characters from the previous books.
I am not huge fan of the concept of switching time lines but this particular story arc demanded it and Hannah did it in a way that was nothing but flawless and organic.
My only complaint is that it was quite verbose at some insignificant areas.
Suffice to say, I loved Scars and I very much look forward to Dima and Lulu's story. Indomitable ladies are my jam and Lulu is the definition of one.

Addie and Nik's story is amazing! We learn so much more of what happened to Addie. Be prepared for tears, anger but also so much love!

If you haven't read the first 3 books of the Blackwater Pack series yet, turn around now and go read Sanctum.

We start Scars with Addie as a child, it builds up to her meeting Nik and then we move to where we left off in Legacy. The story continues from there and we find out how Addie is doing in Russia.

Tasha is my absolute favorite. She is hilarious and her comments made me laugh out loud a lot.

Addie and Nik being bloodthirsty is absolutely amazing!

And I loved all the insights into Lulu and Dimitri. I can't wait to read their story ❤️

I want to start this review by saying that you need to heed the trigger warnings about this book. It delves into heavy shit regarding the impact of sexual assault, rape and emotional and physical abuse. If these are triggers for you, feel free to reach out and I'm happy to guide you as best I can about the content or emotionally prepare yourself.

Hannah put it best when she described this book as emotional dentistry. This book takes all of Addie's experiences in Long Mesa and dismantles them so the reader knows where she is at emotionally. We get to see highlights from her life before the events of Skye's story before we catch up with the present, and it paints a horrific picture of everything we knew about her former pack - fucking monsters.

It was important to have that, to see where Addie was starting so you could really follow her growth into a woman who was doing more than just surviving, she was finally, really living. You would think she started living in Sanctum, but really it was here with Nik that she finally starts to thrive as someone more than just "Skye's mother"

I loved following each step of Addie's heartbreaking journey as she finds her way back to herself and to Nik.

This book is not an easy light read, the first paragraph of this review gives that away. This is more than just a romance novel, it's really more about a woman's journey to reclaiming all the things she was robbed of. The romance is really secondary to her journey.

I do NOT recommend reading this book without having read Skye's story. Hannah does a great job of summarizing the events in Sanctum, Prey, and Legacy readers get a good refresher, but reading the other books really help serve that gut punch of emotion when you see the events from Addie's eyes.

I'm so happy for Nik and Addie and the way the book marries their story. They have fought and lost so much to finally find each other.

To my fellow sexual assault and rape survivors:

I just want to say please make sure you are in the right state of mind and have a comfort human/animal/stuffed animal while embarking on Addie’s story. While there isn’t explicit details on what happened to Addie, there is mention and review of her triggers.

This book can be very cathartic to those who have suffered like Addie, but it can also be triggering. This is not to say that Hannah handled it poorly—in fact, Addie’s support from Nik is what everyone deserves after being taken advantage of in the worst of ways. But no amount of therapy and support can stop your brain from remembering what you’ve worked through for years—you are loved, I love you, and I hear and see you. Don’t be afraid to speak your truth, no matter who tells you otherwise.

***************

Addie was a character I was conflicted on during Skye’s story and it’s because in a perfect world, people wouldn’t have to suffer the atrocities that happened at Long Mesa. But on the other hand, it really shows the strength that survivors have to thrive in order to survive, and how beautiful healing can truly be when with the right person.

With that being said, Addie’s story of healing isn’t easy and she has to make a difficult decision because she wants the life that was taken from her when she mated with Nik before Skye was born. That decision leads her confront her demons and sift through how badly she really was treated and what she really deserves from a healthy relationship.

This book is raw and emotional—I cried multiple times and it definitely has to do with my 4 month pregnant hormones, but also because healing isn’t linear and looks different for so many people—-and for Addie is means talking through the scars that are visible, and ones that mark your soul.

I loved this book and I loved the fact that Addie is finally getting the life that she deserves.

5/5, Hannah!

TW: If you have triggers or subject matter that is hard for you to read, please read the trigger warnings in the beginning. This book shines light on issues and tragedies that are so common place now, but are hard to read, so before you start I encourage everyone to read her message to readers first.

Summary
"I've been fighting my whole life" ~Chapter 13
As a child, Addie's only use was to be promised as a mate to a neighboring Alpha's son. Growing up with that future caging her, Addie knew her place and duty as abuse and fear suffused her life. Part of her just waited for the day she would be free of her vindictive mother and brother, even with an unknown mate.

"He was everything I wanted, and nothing I deserved." ~Chapter 21
When one night of setting aside her duty with a surprising stranger leads to her finding her fated mate, instead of embracing her newfound mated status, their bond is violently broken and both are left with the tattered remains.

"It's hard when the biggest monster of all is the voice in your head." ~Chapter 20
That one act propels Addie and Nik apart for 20 years, each suffering and surviving in their own way. Forced back together for the sake of their daughter and the American werewolves, they realize they could have a second chance if they can put the past behind them. But Addie has been shattered over and over and isn't sure there is anything left to salvage.

Characters
Addie and Nik are to die for.

Addie is protective, yet broken and honestly you just want to hug her. The amount of strength it takes to overcome and survive what she did was nothing short of the bravest warrior in battle. When she starts to come out of her battered shell, it is such a beautiful thing. I loved how the author portrayed her trauma in a way that showed it was possible to get unwavering support and love despite anything that has happened to you because it is not the victim's fault. I appreciated so much how delicately and genuinely each revelation from Addie was handled that did not shy away from what so many people have endured, but also did not leave her in her brokenness.

"I will chase you into any darkness, Adalynne." ~Chapter 26

Nik, oh Nik. Bloodthirsty, sexy, gentle (with Addie) Nik was a hero. Dealing with his own demons from their broken bond, he spent the book showering Addie with the assurance that she was enough, that who she was with all the scars, all the triggers, all the nightmares, all the rough edges were perfect for him. And that he was going nowhere.

"I see your broken pieces, love," he murmured. "And I've seen how you've fused them back together. I see your determination and strength. I see how your heart never stopped fighting and your soul refused to cower. That, my sweet mate, is beauty. And you are the most exquisitely beautiful creature I've ever met." ~Chapter 48

All the Feelings

"I believe the beauty I've discovered could be described as otherworldly." ~Chapter 6
This book, I'm not sure I have words to express my soul-deep love for Addie and Nik. Their story is bathed in heartache, regret, devastation, but also humor, compassion, and a resilient thread of hope that binds them and spans 20 years. I cried at the evil that continually found Addie as she fought to survive and the self-recrimination and guilt that clung to Nik. I laughed at the banter between them, the amazing Natasha and her violent tendencies, and Lulu and Dimitri's will-they-won't-they love saga. There were so many moments that melted my heart, gave me hope in humanity, and made me snort with laughter. This really was an amazing representation of what supportive relationships look like and how communication and patience can mean the difference between connection or devastation.

For all the hardship, the little flirty banter, and the lovable cast of characters, this book shed light on the very abuses that real people face and I think that is such a blessing.

Unabashedly genuine, equal parts heart-wrenching and adorable, this book will give you all the feels.

"The only demands I'll make of you, Addie, are that you be happy and safe...As long as those two needs are being met, then the rest will work itself out." ~Chapter 6

SCARS IS OUT NOW 💙
I’m so emotional rn!!

I highly recommend to read the first 3 books before heading with Scars, it will help you to understand more of the backstory of the main characters here. 🐺

This book is just perfect but I wasn’t expecting any less. Finally we have Nik and Addie’s story and I lost the times I drowned in my tears, the story is as heartbreaking as touching. Even if we got little sneak peeks of the story behind them, finally knowing all the details and more about them feels like we've completed a puzzle.

Addie is the strongest character I have ever met, facing the past to create a future is very brave and the way Nik complement her and support her makes my heart ache in a good and very romantic way 💙

“Stop telling me what you can’t do,” he murmured, “and show me what you can, love.”

“You are my mate. Then, now, and always. You’re not in my soul, Adalynne, you are my soul. You are forever bound to me and I to you”

I just feel this was the perfect closure for them, but I’m still so excited to know more of Blackwater and the side characters who are now getting their own stories ✨

SCARS YA ESTÁ DISPONIBLE 💙
Estoy tan emocionada!!

“Stop telling me what you can’t do,” he murmured, “and show me what you can, love.”

“You are my mate. Then, now, and always. You’re not in my soul, Adalynne, you are my soul. You are forever bound to me and I to you”

Siento que este fue el cierre perfecto para ellos, pero todavía estoy muy emocionada de saber más de Blackwater y los personajes secundarios que ahora tendrán sus propias historias ✨

*I received an ARC for an honest review*

Scars is a wonderfully written book, which interweaves Addie's past with her present after the events of Legacy. I devoured the ARC I was given in one sitting, riding out the emotional rollercoaster to the fullest. Hannah allows us to glimpse at Addie's life from the start in Long Mesa, and her slow but steady transformation as she kindles her new freedom. Some scenes were so haunting and gut-wrenching, that I often found myself stunned and having to just put down my kindle to wipe away the tears. It is the most raw and gut-wrenching story, and I cried through several chapters. If you've read the previous Blackwater Pack books, you will not be disappointed. This book really dives deeper into the horror's of Addie's past which were only briefly mentioned in the first three books. Reader's should heed all of the trigger warning's given, as they are the real scars of Addie's past. We see how those scars begin to heal as the story unveils itself.

I loved that Hannah added in a few chapter's from Nik's perspective, as it really added on to what Addie herself was going through. We see Addie struggle to find her emotional footing in Blackwater, and begin her healing in Narodnaya. I was looking forward to reading more about Nik since reading Legacy, and this book did not disappoint! Often times with trauma it takes help from loved ones to show the MC that they are truly loved for who they are. Watching Nik and Skye help Addie along the way is the exact hurt/comfort content we all needed. Nik is such a gentle giant yet rumbly wolf type, and I loved every second we got with him in this book. A character I didn't expect to fall head over heel for was Tasha! I absolutely loved her support and sass and her willingness to push Addie when she needed it but stop if it was too much.

Hannah sets up our next chapter by weaving Lulu and Dimitri's story into this book, only to have us re-read this book several times in anticipation of their story. We are only given glimpses into Lulu's past, and I cannot wait to dive into her story!

I was fully enveloped into this story from start to finish. Watching Addie be the fierce mother she is was magnificent. I loved reading the Legacy scenes from her perspective, as well as seeing Skye's love for her mother. Every character that Hannah takes, she breathe's such life into all of them. Addie's story had me weeping at the start ,interspersed with outbursts of laughing and comfort throughout the book. Hannah, thank you for this amazing story and for giving us this beautifully stunning next chapter. I cannot wait for the next one!

One thing y'all gotta understand - Hannah lives in Maryland in the US of A! And I... well I live in a small town in SA which no one can spell! The distance between us is 8132 miles! I checked! But let me tell y'all - the moment I started to scream when I got to that one part in the book, I'm convinced that Hannah heard me!!

I knew it was going to happen! I could feel it in my bones! And when it actually did happen, I didn't know if I wanted to hug or shout at Hannah! It was so heartbreaking yet so so beautifully poetic!

If you've read the other books in the Blackwater Pack series you know that Addie's backstory is just soul crushing. I knew I had to have a box of tissues and chocolates nearby because I knew I was going to cry my eyes out! The chocolates didn't last long BTW!

I loved the fact that Hannah went back in time so we could be there for all the moments that shaped Addie's life... the good and the bad ones! My heart broke for this woman and all the other women who had to survive being abused. I can't think of anything to say that will bring comfort or closure. Just know that if I could, I would do the same thing Nik did. (I can't say it because then I'll be in trouble again!)

I do have to congratulate Hannah on the magnificent intimate scenes between Addie and Nik. I was totally channeling Skye when I thought of the fact that it was HER parents doing the smexy and I was like ewwww! Then I realized with a shock that Addie is MY age!!! So I can't think "Ewww Hannah!" because she was practically writing about me doing the smexy... *inserts that awkward Britney Spears gif*

Ooookaaaayy... let's move on! Thank you Asis and Lisa for nagging Hannah to write this book because I can't imagine my life without it! Addie has taught me that it's okay not to be okay! And Nik... well Nik taught me that if you want something - you should do anything and everything to make sure you get it! Also I'll fork up anyone who messes with my family!

I can't wait for Lu and Dima's story! Also... will Tasha ever get a second chance at happiness?

If you're still reading this, why are you still here? Go buy the book! And remember tissues!

4 stars! Throughout the original trilogy I was desperate for Adalynne’s story. After all the trauma she went through, I just wanted her to finally have her happy ending, and this book delivered. Scars was a story with healing and personal growth at its center, with a sweet romance to tie it together.
“I will always be your home, sweetheart. I promise, I’ll always be here waiting for you.”
I love how Nikolai was so protective and exacted vengeance on her behalf without hesitation. I really appreciated the conversations they had around consent and loved how Nik is very situationally aware. I will say, one of my gripes with the book is that Nik and Adalynne weren’t really around each other often one-on-one, and when they were, there were a lot of conversations expressing guilt for how things happened; I wish there were more conversations about getting to know each other in the now versus rehashing what happened in the past.
Nikolai, for all his dominance and ferocity, was always gentle with me. Always patient. Always understanding.
In fact, this felt more of a story of Addie’s healing than it did of their relationship/romance. That’s partially because there were other plotlines happening as well. (Tbh, Lulu and Dimitri were the stars of the show for me!)

The ending felt…abrupt? I understand that there’s going to be more to the overarching story, but I think the flashforward scene took away from some of the critical relationship development that I would’ve loved to have seen. (Example: the mating bond finally clicking back into place). So the pacing of the relationship didn’t work as well for me in this one, but the plot and the characters still gripped me.
“You’ve ruined me for all others, Adalynne,” he whispered, “and I would have it no other way.”

“I like this. You said it means,” I wrinkled my nose, trying to remember, “love, hope, and destiny, right?”
“I said that’s what it stands for,”
he murmured. “Not what it says.”
My gaze lifted to his. “Okay, so what does it actually say?”
“Adalynne,”
he breathed, watching me closely.
Again, I LOVE THE DIMITRI/LULU CRUMBS! I have a feeling that their story might be my favorite one yet…

Having read the previous books I dived into this book already knowing about Addie's life, through her daughter. I expected a lot of tears and anguish and also hoped for a happy ending.

This book is powerful, yes it's a beautiful love story, but is so much more.

This book is about the strength to push through hardship and the willingness to fight for your dreams, is about acceptance and learning to love oneself.

Addie is courageous and has the kindest soul and after being betrayed and hurt by everyone, her road to recovery was painful but so worth it.

Nik is perfect, he understands what she's going through and supports her no matter what. He's hurt yes, but there's not a single bone in his body that blames Addie. He's protective and loving.

This book has a lot of triggers, but, at the same time I think Scars is a recognition to the inner turmoil and trauma that so many people carry within themselves, and how hard but possible it is, to push through and emerge no longer a victim but a survivor.

I cried a lot during this book, what Addie went through was a monstrosity but seeing her emerge on the other side of it a powerful vibrant woman, gave me hope.

I'm in love with this new pack, I can't wait to read Lu and Dimitri's story and please one or a million books about Tasha cause she's amazing.

I loved that we get to see glimpses of how Skye and Remi are doing and how the family dynamic changes now that Nik is in the picture.

Scars is everything I hoped and more, a beautiful love story and a powerful fight to break the bonds of the past.

“My past was a legacy of scars, some visible but most unseen.”

I’m not even going to lie, I was super excited when I learned that we were getting Addie and Nik’s story, but also scared because I knew it would not be an easy read because of Addie’s past. And I was right to a point, but Hannah McBride handled the hardest parts of this story so well.

If you have not read the first three books in this series that are from Addie’s daughter, Skye’s pov, I highly suggest doing that first. It can be read as a standalone, but there is so much back story in those books, plus they are all also fantastic books.

Scars was such an emotional journey for these characters, making it an emotional read. After all of the absolutely horrific things in Addie’s past, this is the journey of her healing process and finding her way back to herself and her Mate, Nikolai.

Like I said Scars is an emotional read, but it is also a heartwarming one in places. I am so glad to see Addie get her happily ever after with Nikolai, she deserved it so much.

I really loved this book. Like all the others I’ve read from this author, her writing and her ability to tell a story well just keeps you immersed in the story and even though this is a fairly big book, it didn’t feel like it.

I really enjoyed the setting in this one, I’m a sucker for secluded forest/mountain setting in books, and the way that the author described Nikolai’s pack lands sounded absolutely beautiful. I loved the characters and family dynamics as well. And I am so excited that we will be seeing more from different characters in the future.

If you have read the previous Blackwater Pack series, this is a must read. Hannah McBride does not disappoint.

Rating: 5/5⭐️
Spice: 1.5/3 🌶

Before I get into my review, let me just start off by saying that although this can be read as a standalone, I really recommend starting off with Sanctum first as there’s a lot more background and introduction to the characters… and it’s just amazing lol.

Now on to my review. This book exceeded all of my expectations, I loved everything about this book. Every single emotion was felt, I cried, I giggled, I sighed, I swoon, I loved. These characters, this series is forever going to leave a stamp on my heart!!

I’m so sad this this book is complete!! Such a bittersweet moment when I closed that last page even though I loved how the author wrapped it all up, I just wanted, needed more. This became an all time favorite of mine fast!

If you’ve not read or even started this series then you NEED this book in your life. The angst, the love, and the characters… it’s all so worth it. You will not be disappointed!!

Trigger Warning: Scars deals with the trauma of sexual assault and domestic abuse that may be upsetting to some readers.

I have been anxiously awaiting this book since we first learned the truth about Skye’s paternity. It was EVERYTHING I wanted and more. After so much abuse and heartache, Addie deserves all the happiness in the world. Nik’s attentiveness and demeanor were captivating from the moment he walked on the page. Scars is not only an incredible love story but a lesson in strength and overcoming past trauma. Happiness can be found again even following the bleakest circumstances. I applaud McBride on how well she handled this material. I love the relationships in these books, both romantic and platonic. I’m really looking forward to more from this world!

Where do I even begin? I absolutely loved getting to understand Addie and Nik better. I loved that we got insight on the early years and the struggles that Addie endured. I enjoyed finally understanding her feelings during certain scenes we saw in Legacy.

The second half of this book was phenomenal. Watching Addie struggle but let her guard down to those around her. To seeing Nik being so understanding and gentle with her. Watching the ups and downs from them and watching them grow together was everything but also Addie growing into her own even more.

Now for the side characters. Watching Dimitri and Lulus head butt but relying on one another was so heart warming. I’m glad we finally understood why Lulu was raised inside the palace and why she has such a hard relationship with her own kind. I really cannot wait to see how Hannah tackles their story next !

I had such a blast returning to the world of the Blackwater Pack. As soon as I finished Nik and Addie's story, I immediately had to go back and start re-reading Sky and Remy's. Hannah McBride writes my favorite shifter romances, and Scars is no exception. Emotionally speaking, this was a hard book to get through sometimes. Addie has so much trauma to endure, process, survive and learn to thrive. She and Nik have fantastic chemistry and the individual plot and mystery in this book are really compelling.

It was such a good read. I love all these characters, and am so excited we have more to come in this world. Hannah McBride is an auto-buy author for me, and I can't wait to see what she does next.

Grab your tissues and chocolate! I highly recommend everyone read the TW prior to picking this one up.

With that being said - WOW! I loved getting to read about this duo and of course my Lulu/Dimitri loving heart was full getting to read about them again. Also, am I in love with Natasha now? Yes, yes I am.

This book is such a beautiful tribute to healing and finding love again. Both in yourself and a partner. Love love love and can't wait until the next book 💕 I just love this universe and all of the characters in it!

I am an emotional mess. I love Hannah’s books, and I knew I would love Scars without a doubt. What I was not prepared for was the emotional rollercoaster I went through. After learning bits and pieces of Addie’s story through Skye’s eyes, I knew Scars would have some intense scenes. I was prepared for that, but not for how much I was emotionally invested into the character and her story. It was so easy to fall in love with both Addie and Nik. Their chemistry and love story was so beautifully written with an ending that was so well deserved. I promise readers will love and adore this story.

This book is a journey of heartache, grief, abuse, flashbacks. Its also a book on growth, healing, having an unwavering and unending support system, and honesty. It beautifully shows a survivors journey and illustrates what every survivor hopes for. A support system and the strength to not only fall apart but to heal as well. Her characters portray the strength we all wish we had in us. I cannot wait for the next installment

Read. This. Book.

I never thought I would love a story as much as I was in love with Skye and Remys story, but here we are. Addie and Niks story will have you on the edge of your seat. So like I said, read this book. You will be happy.
