In February 2019, five Members of Parliament Ann Coffey, Anna Soubry, Chris Leslie, Joan Ryan, and Mike Gapes left the political parties they had belonged to for decades to form a new party. This book based on hours of interviews charts the process by which each of them came to make such a momentous and life-changing decision.
None of them regrets their actions, and they would do the same again.
"The actions of the five Members of Parliament are a challenge to a party system which instead of protecting against extremism, can become the vehicle for it." – Peter McNab
This is a thin book in many ways and it's dangerously close to an Alan Partridge style, "and needless to say I had the last laugh" bunch of congratulatory anecdotes. It's telling that the interviews are double-spaced and 12pt, it's telling that not all ChUK members contribute.
A curious moment in British politics needs something more than this to record exactly what happened - and what could have happened - when the Labour Party came so close to splitting. This trumped-up pamphlet is not it.
