For every children's book, the first point of attraction is the cover and title. This book wins that round by a huge margin. It has one of the cutest covers I've seen this year.

An adorable little girl, cute little creatures, and loads of magic! These aren't just on the cover but in the story too. Written in rhyming verse, the book tells us of the adventures of a little girl named Chloe who discovers that one of her crayons is magical. What follows is a wonderful journey filled with challenges and fun. Children will surely enjoy this book as they get to meet new creatures and learn the values of bravery and love.

The rhymes of the book are such that this would make a wonderful bedtime story. A creative adult who will be able to narrate the story with voice modulation and sound effects will certainly have a very captivated little listener as his/her audience.

The illustrations match the cover in cuteness and serve to enhance the story.

An enjoyable book indeed, much recommended for early readers.

Thank you, NetGalley and Penguin Random House Children’s UK, for the Advanced Review Copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Following the release of The Secret of Me in January, Amy Sparkes brings us another magical picture book that, once again, celebrates the incredible power of imagination. The Magic Crayon is a delightful, fantasy adventure story that bounces along in perfect rhyme.

When Chloe's brother is mean to her, Chloe decides to get her own back by using her magical, silvery crayon. But things quickly get out of hand and now Chloe must use her crayon to journey across a fairytale land to rescue him. But Jack's captor is not keen on letting him go. Can Chloe use her magic crayon to solve one final problem?

This picture book has a truly magical feel to it. The story sparkles as bright as Chloe's silver crayon and thanks to the stunning illustrations by Ali Pye, the settings and characters come to life before your very eyes. It is perfect for anyone who loves traditional tales but watch out for those imaginative twists that prove that anything can happen in stories.

The Magic Crayon is not just about revisiting fairytales, though. Nestled at the heart of it is the very real and relatable relationship between two siblings. Jack and Chloe beautifully portray the complex and unique bond that siblings share; one where anger and pranks and blame are interwoven with a deep, protective love that means they'll do anything to help each other...maybe even kiss a frog! Just don't expect the peace to last for long...

Guaranteed, this story will put a smile on your face, give you a warm, fuzzy feeling in your chest and make the air around you crackle with magic. It's the perfect mix of traditional and original - creativity at it's best. Just keep an eye on what your little ones choose to draw after reading this. Who knows when they might come to life!

The Magic Crayon is available to buy now. A big thanks to Amy Sparkes and Penguin for allowing me a review copy.

Magic, witches, trolls, and big bad wolves, this cute story has features of some of the great fairytales.

When Chloe’s brother is cruel to her she finds a magic crayon and seeks revenge! Told in rhyme, we see that Chloe uses her imagination alongside the magic crayon to get her revenge, but then instantly regrets it! We follow her adventure into fairytale wood with her magic crayon by her side to rescue him and set things right again.

Incredibly fun, magical, and mystical, we learn about bravery, forgiveness, and love.

The illustrations are wonderful and I love that they look like they too have been drawn by a magic crayon!

I enjoyed reading this with my three-year-old son, a new family favourite.

Thank you NetGalley and Penguin Random House Children’s Publishers for the e-arc to review.

Chloe gets annoyed with her brother so she draws a witch and wishes she would turn her brother into a frog. When Chloe’s drawing comes to life and the witch whips Jack away in her broomstick, Chloe is horrified and determined to rescue him. She draws all sorts of magic on her journey to save him from the witch.

The rhyming text is lovely, although there are the odd moments when it feels slightly forced. I like the quest through fairytale lands and the witch who isn’t really evil after all. It was great to see a female heroine rescuing an older brother. I wasn’t overly keen on the style of the illustrations, but this wouldn’t put me off recommending this book as a lovely read for EYFS or KS1. I think even lower KS2 teachers could make use of this as a writing prompt.

I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

What a lovely imaginative rhyming story. This picture book tells the story of a little girl called Chloe who finds a magical crayon and then uses it to rescue her little brother from a witch. My 6 year old daughter loved the magical element of this story. A crayon that could draw things that came to life really captured her imagination. This story has everything: magic, fairy tale characters, unicorns and a fun adventure to overcome some baddies. It also has some lovely illustrations that help to bring the story to life. I would definitely use this book in an early years or infant class and I think it would really enhance a fairytales or magical creatures topic.

This is a funny, rhyming tale about a little girl with a magic crayon who tries to get revenge on her brother for all the tricks he has played on her. This backfires and she has to rescue him which involves a number of situations that draw on familiar fairytales and stories. This is an original clever story that all young children will delight in (especially those with annoying siblings) and which parents will also enjoy reading.

Thank you to Amy Sparkes, #netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for a fair review.

I really enjoyed this book. There was everything to love about it from the bright, imaginative illustrations, to the well-considered plot told in poetic verse.

Regretting the fate she bestowed on her brother, a young girl armed with her magical crown goes in search of him.

The poem is well balanced and flows at an even pace throughout. The subject matter is relatable to the young audience of 5-9-year-olds it best suits.

I see this book being a family favourite, or frequently read in libraries and playgroups.

A clever, funny and imaginative rhyming story of believe it or not, a magic crayon. Chloe accidentally magics her brother away and then with the help of the crayon and some familiar fairtytale stories has to work out how to rescue him again.

Easy to read and beautifully illustrated. I loved the magic and wonder in this book. The character's kindness to her brother despite how he treated her really tugged at my heartstrings.
