Jon South knows he should be dead. Yet somehow, he’s still breathing. Now, alone and trapped inside the prison, he is still suffering from the zombie bite and unsure how he will escape. With the help of some unlikely new allies, Jon gets out of the prison and makes his way back to Hope’s Dawn, only to find the camp smoking and burning from an apparent ambush.
Many lie dead amongst the destruction, while several others are missing, including Brooke and her son. Jon wastes no time going to Freedom Ridge to recruit Raylon and Lennox’s help to find his friends.
Fighting against time and knowing the virus from his infected bite could take him at any moment, will Jon find his friends before it’s too late?
Dead Hope is the third book in the bestselling zombie apocalypse series, Dead South, written by Zach Bohannon.
Zach Bohannon is a horror and science fiction author. His books include the Amazon #1 bestsellers, Dead South, and Empty Bodies. He loves heavy metal, video games, hockey, reading, and he doesn’t trust a beer he can see through. He’s a retired drummer, and has had a beard since 2003—long before it was cool. He lives in Tennessee.
Thankfully the wait for the third book in the Dead South series wasn't that long because we were left with a pretty brutal cliffhanger. Nearly all of the characters are in dire straits as their enemies, human and zombie alike are closing in around them, in some cases literally. One of the things I most appreciated about this book was it's focus on Malcolm, the series' "big bad." There's a lot of dimension added to his character and it's easy to sympathize with his anger. There's a lot of zombie head bashing, dark rooms with chains, and possibly an incredibly satisfying bare knuckle brawl.
The book does feel like it's closing off the series' first act. We know all the players (for now), we know why they hate each others, there's a lot to build for both side if they wish to take down the other. I'm in for whatever is next.
I just finished reading Dead Hope. It took me a while to get through this book. It was such a great storyline but it was boring to me. I think the way everything just "worked out" was too easy. There was very little real action. I love Zach's stories, but I felt like it was more of a fairytale, than post apocalyptic terror and survival. I hope the next in this series is more realistic for the story.

Enjoyable next story in the series. Jon, Brooke, Terrence, and the rest are fantastic characters in tough situations. Zach did a good job of developing the bad guy, giving him depth. The explanation that Jon is immune felt like it took a little bit long to be revealed, but a minor complaint. The book could use a little more editing though, but not so bad that it ruined my enjoyment of the story. Looking forward to the next story.
I loved all three Dead South Books. I would recommend this book series to anyone who loves Post-Apocalyptic Zombie books with a lot of action, a bit of love, hate, human connection, gory details and a thrilling joy ride. I felt like I was there with Jon through the whole series. Great read. Can’t wait for Book #4
The part where Brooke is held captive and she is being deprived of water and she is very thirsty, is never resolved. Several times she started crying, crying and losing more water and at no point during or after her ordeal was she given water. Story has sections that make little sense on the motivation for their actions.
The survivors of Hope's Dawn are not in a good place. Jon has to get the survivors out and be ready for what comes next. Can't wait for the next chapter in the series to see what happens.
