My Bible study group is using this and the New Testament co-book to go through the Bible book by book. We have had a few issues with some of his thoughts theologically but overall this was very helpful to guide us through the Old Testament, which is hard to push through at times on its own. We read a book each week, following his guide, but focused on the scripture before the book. Using the book more as a guide or for extra discussion questions. For the price I think it’s a helpful set of books to motivate you to read through the Bible.
I think this is a really good introduction Bible study. If you’re new to reading the Bible you can definitely gain a lot of information from this study. It was also a really good study if you liked to reflect on your life and how God is moving within it and through you.
I was wanting more of a cultural understanding Bible study. For instance, when God makes a covenant with Abraham he does it in the way that was a cultural covenant making process at that time in history—like for us it would be signing a document but back then they split animals and other things in two and walked around or through them (I’m not 100% sure) but I wanted to understand more of that. So God was using what Abraham knew and understood to make it relevant to him. God always meets us where we are and I love that.
There were parts of this study that were really good and I did gain more insight on (1 and 2 Kings), I think I just needed something with a more narrow focus. If you’re the same as me, I think we should look into specific books of the Bible studies. (I’m currently doing one on the book of revelation and it’s fantastic—Revealing Revelation by Amir Tsarfati)
Anyway, this is a really good Bible study if you want a broad introduction into the Bible. The chapters open up with some facts of who wrote the book, key verse and theme etc. This Bible study was also semi easy to follow. I think the author intends you to read a book of the Bible each week but you can take things slower (I did and it didn’t hurt anything). I think this would also be better to do in a small group.
Appreciate how he keeps you focused on the big / over arching picture. Some thoughtful questions, some that are average, some that aren't worth answering. Theologically I've had some differences as some of his word choices tend to fall towards a prosperity gospel mind-set where everything negative that happens in our world must be for some good pay-off later.
It was a very open ended study, which is why I’m rating it so low… I don’t have much material to actually “rate”. But, it got me through the entire Old Testament (which is something I never expected to accomplish) and gave me an outline to work with which was really helpful! I’m excited to work my way through the New Testament now.
Great study to refresh and for new readers through the Bible. It gives a very brief overview of the whole OT testament. It is more personal based than expository/theology study. But it’s great for the overall historical context. Beautiful layout and easy to follow. And great for groups!
