The Spellmonger #12.5

The Wizards of Sevendor: An Anthology

Rate this book
“It is said by some sages that the Spellmonger’s exile to the Magelaw left Sevendor, the City of Magic, unprotected in his absence. That would be untrue; for though the mightiest mage of the era was forced by law and custom to refrain from visiting his realm in Castal, he had left behind a significant body of learned and dedicated colleagues to continue his policies and see to the protection of the magelands.

“These were not all warmagi, nor even High Magi; indeed, the strength of Sevendor depended on magi of all types and descriptions. As Minalan fought against the darkest foes in the West, his lands in the east were protected by his vassals, allies, and friends. Their powers varied, as did their station. But they were uniformly devoted to Minalan the Spellmonger and the land he had wrought. They kept watch against secret incursions or hidden dangers against the realm while the Spellmonger’s strength was elsewhere. Whilst he grappled with the fearsome minions of Korbal the Necromancer, his magical land was well-warded by the famous Wizards of Sevendor.”

When the cat's away the mice will play so they say. This is a fun collection of short stories of what the other wizards in and around Sevendor get up to while Min isn't around. They were fun light stories about some of my favorite wizards who don't get nearly enough attention in the main stories, so I really appreciate them getting their own little spot light. I especially enjoyed Olmeg and the Tal Alon.

So brilliant to be back in Sevendor

Thoroughly enjoyed every page! It was so much fun to be back in the Barony with many of our much loved characters. There’s even a main series plot development 😁! Another great book for the Mongerverse. Thank You Terry Mancour!

General Overview
A superb segway into the wider world of the Spellmonger, The Wizards of Sevendor does a great job of fleshing out characters, and breathing greater depth into this vast series.

Style
Terry Mancour's writing style, is, in my opinion nothing extraordinary. However, the worlds he makes, and how clearly he paints them are noteworthy. His style is therefore functional, as I have mentioned in previous reviews, but his setting is where he stands out as an author.

His writing is clear, the scenes well delivered, and the character, though sometimes expected, well presented. If you've read this far into the series, you know the foibles he has as an writer, but are happy to look past them. I shall not say more.

Story
Tales of those left behind in fair Sevendor, after the exile of Minalan the Spellmonger, this book is a delight.

As I have also covered in previous reviews of this series, Minalan is too powerful a character to be that interesting for myself anymore. However, with the limited abilities of his friends brought to the fore, I found this book far more interesting.

I feel much of what is covered in these side stories will have a great deal to play in the future of this series. If not, well, they are a delight to read. Truly.

Final Thoughts
A great series of side stories, this is a must for fans of the series.

First of all I want to say that I have been completely hooked by this series. I am in love with the zany, impulsive, and arrogant Spellmonger...... seriously. So, when I saw that there was a new book out, I snapped it right up - even before the Audio was out (that's a big deal for me). Then I realized that it was several anthologies instead of the next book. I was only a little disappointed...okay....maybe more than a little.

But, I'm happy to say that the stories were longer than I was expecting and they were all pretty much in the right timeline (the NOW timeline where the story currently resides - with Minilan exiled and being in Vanador). Besides that, they were all pretty interesting and I ended up enjoying this quite a bit. Does that mean that I am still not waiting for the next book? Absolutely not...I am a bit impatient. I know that Mr. Mancour tends to write fairly long books, so I'm sure they take plenty of time to write, so I will go back to patiently waiting to see what trouble the Spellmonger is going to get into next.

Okay, maybe SOMEWHAT patiently....

A Fantastic Teaser. ** NO SPOILERS **

A wonderful series of short stories about events in and around Sevendor from the perspective of the assorted of mages and talented ‘sports’ in the barony.

From Bannamor to Zagor and several others in between. Most of the stories are referred to in the main plot of the Spellmonger series. In fact there were occasions when things were reported in the main story that I wondered “how did that happen?”
The events within take place around or soon after book 12, so dive right in to get some gap’s filled in. A great way to learn more about some of your favourite characters.

I love the short stories, seeing Sevendor and it's surrounding estates.

Lot's of interesting clues and hints for the main story arc. As in the first anthology collection 'The road to Sevendor' there are multiple points of view and some new characters have been introduced. The last story has some intriguing foreshadowing for the political battles Min will have to grapple with.
Setting up the love interest for both Lorcus and Olmeg in the same story might sound like a stretch, but it was really well done, and it was great to finally see a story from Olmeg's point of view.

Very clean

I’ve made a bit of a stink about his last few releases and the typos. This one is quite clean.

It’s also a very nice slice of minor character events back in Sevendor. Stories that might need to be told, but shouldn’t be
told in a main novel, as they would muddy the central narrative.

In a lot of ways, this collection of stories is reminiscent of earlier novels, especially during the founding of Sevendor. Less fraught with awesome power and massive armies, more personal and clever.

Makes me want to read the whole series again.

Meh.... normally I love Terry's work. I couldn't wait to get more of my Sevendori peeps. But I just couldn't get into this collection, the characters fell flat of my normal expectations. I felt like it was just laying in elements for future novels which is fine, but I want to fall in love with the individual stories along the way. Everything I needed to know, I pretty much learned already at the end of Arcanist.

Short but Sweet

This can be best viewed as a series of "short" stories focusing on the individual caretakers Milan set over Sevendor in his absence. Each one is filling though and has a tidy ending leaving at a ittle trail at an interesting future for them. (Minor spoiler: there's a bit of romance in a few of these, just a bit) . The book will whet your appetite for more of the the Spellmonger series, for now... ;)

Interesting Support Stories

A bunch of short tales developing details of character and events involving regular supporting characters. Mostly stuff not far off main story line but which was not told in detail before. Or events in lives of said cast which previously added wives or pets without further explanation...and preparing ground for such additions to perhaps be important in the future of the main story line.

Some great short stories

Some of our favourite characters from the spellmongers world are given the stage. All the stories are entertaining and some have real consequences concerning the main story line progression. One of them especially is great fun ,which I want to read again straightaway.

Great stories that build towards to the next book

I had skipped the .5 books till this point, as I was burning through the main story. All caught up and desperate, I had to give in and am glad of it. This was a great read and brought me right back into the Spellmonger World. I am now convinced that Olmeg the Green Mage needs his own book entirely.

Pleasant trip back to Calidor

I just can not get enough of the world Terry has created. These stories from lovable characters not heard from in some time was a delightful read. Humor and some small advancements of the main plot line dappled through the tales was more satisfying than I expected. I am eagerly awaiting the next installment!

One of the better books in this series. The main story is getting an annoying trend of "power amplification" as most fantasy books do. This side story (along with the hawk maiden series) gets around that but still relies on a well constructed universe.

Author is still annoyingly obsessed with sex and mysogeny, to a lesser degree in this story.

Many small things make Large ripples.

I love that how this book looks as if it is unimportant. Yet I believe that in this book many a small detail should prove of great import in future books.

Mostly Narrative

The book was off to a good start, with entertaining character interaction. Sadly it quickly devolved into a simple and lengthy narrative.

Disappointingly, it follows the author’s recent trend to focus more on narrative than character interaction.

Fabulous foray into the world of Sevendor's magical community. This adds a whole new dimension to the world building, giving it a richer context.

This series goes from strength to strength with each addition. Hope to see more side stories come through.

10/10 Terry!

Fine bunch of tales

It is a nice collection of new stories about some of the minor characters in the Spellmongor universe. It helps round out some characters personalities and motivations. All in all a nice read between sagas.

A lot of series that have short story anthologies, I feel like you can skip the anthologies. For the Spellmonger, they are a most read. The stories full in some of the blanks from the main story line. They also add a depth to the world creation and character development.

What's going on in Sevendor!

When I read Arcanist I asked Terry the question, What's going on in Sevendor? Little did I know he had already responded. Great Anthology, fun reading.
