If you love sweet romance mixed with edge-of-your-seat mystery and suspense, you’ll want to read this third installment of the Paradise Valley Mystery series. Centered in a small town, the lovely widow Emily and her interesting friends, along with the hot new police detective, work together to solve crimes and a murder mystery. Think “Sex and the City” meets “Nancy Drew.”
Debra Burroughs writes with intensity and power. Her characters are rich and the stories are full of compelling suspense and real romance. She can be found, most days, sitting in front of her computer in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, dreaming up and writing about strong women, their relationships with men (good and bad), involved in exciting, mysterious, and romantic situations.
Overall this a good mystery series, with likeable well-fleshed out characters. It's not perfect, sure, with errors like the most probable misuse of "y'all". As far as I know, and based on some internet searches, "y'all" is used when addressing more than one person (a pair or group), but one character used (and overused) this when addressing an individual. Hopefully this got changed in the rest of the series. There were a few other small things, such as repetition, but the mystery and action were still good. I will certainly be starting on the 4th book soon.
This book in the series seems as if it were written by a completely different author. Emily was a whiny little brat, Colin seemed to be whooped, Camille was a b*tch, and Isabel was constantly lying. The book was supposed to be about a sex trafficking ring in Paradise Valley, but it was more about Emily finding Evan's killer. And in her spare time, she decided to investigate a sex traffic ring. She was, of course, permitted to insert herself into a multi force arrest. She was even permitted to attend questioning of a witness. The FBI just agreed to it. It is irritating that this book was so different from the others. None of the characters seemed to be the same people they were in other books. And Emily's grandstanding and whining was just too much.
Ever since her late husband’s death, Emily has been having nightmares. Ironically, the murder of her husband, who was a brilliant P.I., has, ironically, gone unsolved. But what gets to her most was that “he kept a whole tapestry of secrets from her—including his real identity.” (LOC 57)
Emily can’t move on with her new boyfriend until she—a kickass Charlie’s Angel—can solve his murder and put her nightmares to rest.
This book struck me as an inquisitive mystery, one I thought I would look forward to unraveling. Although this chain of lies does unravel piece by piece, it also somehow deviates to a prostitution ring, which I thought was irrelevant. A lot of federal logistics slowed the pace dramatically, making it harder to keep up. It makes you wonder what the real mystery was.
This is a good romantic suspense novel. I like how Debra Burroughs is willing to write a romance without all the added sex scenes. Romantic suspense is not my usual genre but I really enjoy the writing of Debra Burroughs. I have read books one and two in this series but it was a while ago so I had a little bit of a refresher of the story in the first few chapters, this was good for me. The story is a slow start but once it gets going beware you will not want to put the book down. I like how the book answers many questions of what happened to and who was Evan (Emily Parker's first husband). I am looking forward to the next book in this series.
This was a great romantic suspense story. Even though you can read it as a standalone novel, it's best to read the series of books in order. I liked how the author dealt with the subject of human trafficking/child prostitution. It wasn't focused on the negative side but how people can ban together to change lives for the better. The other part of the story was the continuation and somewhat conclusion of the mystery surrounding Emily's dead husband. I look forward to reading the next installment in this series.
Nice tie up of previous books with no cliffhanger. The characters are interesting, I find it a bit unrealistic that a woman could lose someone she loved in a violent unresolved crime and both her and her friends are ready to move on in six months and the man she moves on to has all these wall but one look at Emily and the all tumble down and he's ready to be madly in love after losing his love violently and Emily being in the same type work. Other than that the stories were good. And thank you for no graphic sex but still romance and love.
I borrowed The Chain of Lies ~ Paradise Valley ~ Book 3, by Debra Burroughs, author from the Kindle Unlimited Program on Amazon.
A murder mystery, a new romance between two brave people, stopping a sex trafficking ring, rescuing a kidnapped teenager and solving the murder, putting the killer behind bars and a happy ending makes The Chain of Lies an exciting and satisfying read.
The dialogue was good, the cooperation of friends and law enforcement and the undercover work made it very interesting. So far this is a great series.
I am loving this series! These characters are wonderful and I really enjoy the storylines. The author knows how to draw you into the story and keep you there until the end!
I am thoroughly enjoy Debra Burroughs series. Easy, intriguing, reading escape. Emily Parker is a great character as are the friends who surround her. These books low key remind me of Janet Evanovich. Another author I enjoy.
The book kept you on your toes. I knew the minute Molly and Emily saw the girl in the car what direction the story was going, getting to the end was interesting. Finally an ending to the mystery of Evan/David was revealed.
The Chain of lies brings to town a prostitution ring, but that could never happen in a town like sleepy little Paradise Valley. Join Emily and the gang as they try to find out what's going on in town and save their friends daughter!
Third in the series. When an accidental meeting of a young Asian girl in a hotel restroom turns into an investigation of human trafficking/prostitution, it pulls in the daughter of Emily's close friends. Plus the hunt for her former husband's murderer is reaching a conclusion.
A must read mystery series. I felt like I was right there as I read this series. Loved the characters, and the strong willed nature of the main character. One of my favorites for sure.
The author has written a very good and thrilling story of deception and the crime of slave trade in a small town that will keep guests and entertained.
Debra Burroughs is a gifted writer. She had me hooked very early and I fell into the storyline. Hope I get to read many more of her books. Thank you Debra.
I am really enjoying this series - it's a nice clean mystery series. The Chain of Lies is book three in the Paradise Valley Mystery series and though it can be read as stand alone as we get some snippets of backstories in easy book it is still best to read them in order.
Emily is getting more PI work and her relationship with Colin is blossoming, and not only is Paradise Valley becoming a hotspot for murder recently she is also getting one step closer to discovering who Evan really was and who killed him and the reason why.
It was good to get some form of closure regarding Evan but it was a little flat
