I came across this book in a back road motel lobby. Despite it’s recent copywrite it was tattered, dog-eared, and almost obscured within a pile of magazines on the lobby end table. In the poor lamplight I pulled the book from it’s place and slowly thumbed through to assess my interest in straining my eyes to read further. Two hours later I look up in a stupor, eyes locked in a permanent squint, and surprised to find myself back in the hotel lobby. The book had enthralled me.

Ok - that’s not at all what happened. Having previously read DM Seay’s “Pieces of America’, which I loved - I was excited to see his latest release drop. I ordered the paperback, which conveniently arrived two days later as things so frequently do. I actually read ‘Leaving’ over a few weeks. It sat on my bedside table and I read just a bit each night. Each chapter, a story in itself, became a series of clues - when combined with the proceeding chapter, revealing a common thread of characters, situations, and emotions. While sprinkled with references to a contemporary setting - cell phones, social media, etc. - the stories feel like they would have been at home in my 16 year old self’s pile of required reading in the late 80’s. Dark nights, tense conversations, and new beginnings.

I really liked this book. Couldn’t wait to get to the next night’s chapter. At times, melancholy and heart-breaking, the book transcended that for me. Just really good storytelling with a backbone of regret.

Check it out.
