The Simple AIP (Autoimmune Protocol) Handbook: An Ancestral Approach to Fix Leaky Gut and Reverse Autoimmunity Through Nourishing Foods

Rate this book
Fix leaky gut and heal your digestive system with The Simple AIP Handbook. Choose what dietary approach is right for you and kick-start your healing journey!
The Simple AIP Handbook is a 4-stage autoimmune protocol that focuses on resting your body, mind, and spirit, while giving your metabolism and immune system a break to recover and return back to balance.
It includes 4 Ancestral / Paleolithic AIP variations depending on where you are on the autoimmune spectrum, which is also on the book for you to determine.
Autoimmunity is a very fluid metabolic environment that needs a holistic approach to be efficiently addressed.
Gaining a proper foundation of knowledge regarding autoimmunity, how it manifests and how it is affected by diet and lifestyle is vital if you are a chronic disease or autoimmune patient.
You may have to 'retrain' your immune system the same way you would train a puppy to behave, stay quiet and not overreact with everything and anything.
Autoimmunity is essentially an immune overreaction and your immune system needs basically the same thing with a puppy- someone to help it from overreacting.

Wholesome and Comprehensive
I felt George Kelly has done a fabulous job with this book. It is a complete guide if one wants to improve their diet for better health. I suffer from autoimmune disease and have lost my thyroid to it. My regret after reading this book, why didn't I find it sooner!
This book has debunked many of the things I have wrongly learnt due to my ethnicity or general habit. I suppose it is not too late to change my beliefs and practices around food.

It’s troubling to consider the modern-day-dependence on a profit-driven global market of cheap processed food, often lacking in the nutrients necessary for human health. The heart disease, obesity, diabetes and autoimmune conditions associated with such a diet is well-known by now, and a corresponding move towards accessing ethically-produced foods—yet we have no way of knowing if these been produced through favourable or unfavourable methods. Cows, for example, can be given drugs to increase milk yield, while their feed may include genetically-modified elements. Is there ever a way to ensure food unadulterated in these ways, in this day and age? Author George Kelly believes there is, and in The Simple AIP (Autoimmune Protocol) Handbook he sets out his vision for a life-regime based around unprocessed foods, such as those our ancient ancestors probably ate.

I've read diet-advice books by author George Kelly before, in my ongoing search for a suitable dietary regime. This one goes into some technical depth, but that's only to be expected from a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. The author sets out his perceived need for an Autoimmune Paleo diet, including self-testing for autoimmunity, foods allowed and those not, with a wealth of more useful information on what to eat, when and why.

There’s a section on individual types of fruits, for example, with a breakdown of exactly which vitamins they contain and the particular benefits of these. Having focussed in the past on the stated need to eat vegetables in their whole state—raw or cooked—in order to utilise their high-fibre content, I was particularly pleased to find that juicing them can make them easier to digest and enjoy the equally-good vitamin and mineral benefits.

The author also focusses on ‘Four Ancestral Diets’ to be tried, as well as how to have a healthy relationship with simple foodstuffs, before rounding things up with a brief Conclusion and finishing with a useful Reference section.

All in all, it’s a useful text, but be warned—it’s not a get-healthy-fast fad diet. It’s a plan for life for those serious about wanting to make a real difference, and which requires commitment. If that’s you, then this book could well be just what you’re looking for.

This book has a lot of great information about foods. Sometimes the information is a bit overwhelming as there is a lot of scientific terminology that many people may not be used to. I had to skim a bit to get through it.

I went in thinking this would be a typical diet book and it wasn't that. There isn't necessarily a plan of what to do (except for a short section towards the end). That section at the end mentions a couple of different diets and how to not overwhelm yourself dieting (ex: prep all meals for the week on Sunday). It isn't heavy on recipes either.

The real value in the book is that there is some very useuful information on different types of foods. For each food it would mention various condidtions that they might cause and benefits they might provide. I went through reading looking for a couple of conditions I have and on my own started to formulate a plan of what to do. I found this really helpful.

My only lingering doubt throughout the book was how reliable the information was. It sounds reliabe given the terminology and there is a list of sources at the back of the book, but I honestly didn't going verifying that each source was a legitimate one. Some of the reasoning borderd on the specious in my opinion but that could also be due to some of the studies it was referencing. However the information itself is so valuable it behooves you to move past that. For example it says that one of the primary reasons for increased gluten sensitivity is due to different forms of argriculture of the last century or so. That may be true, but I often wonder if gluten sensitivity has always been prevalent and we are just more aware of it. However, if you can move past that, there is some really valuable information on gluten on why it might be best for some to avoid it.

I think the best approach to this book is to try some of the things it suggest slowly and see how one reacts to it.

Overall it's a very useful book and I think it's really going to be helpful for me.

"The Simple AIP (Autoimmune Protocol) Handbook: An Ancestral, Nutrient-Dense Approach To Health and Wellness" is a valuable resource for anyone seeking to understand and implement the Autoimmune Protocol diet to improve their health and well-being.

One of the strengths of this handbook is its ability to explain complex concepts in a straightforward manner. It breaks down the science behind the Autoimmune Protocol into digestible pieces, making it accessible to both newcomers and those familiar with the AIP diet. This approachability is enhanced by the inclusion of practical tips, recipes, and meal plans, which are interspersed throughout the book. These resources help readers get started and maintain the AIP lifestyle with ease.

The emphasis on nutrient-dense, whole foods is a cornerstone of the AIP diet, and the author does an excellent job of explaining the rationale behind these dietary choices. The inclusion of sample shopping lists and recipes tailored to the AIP protocol adds tremendous value. These recipes are not only health-conscious but also flavorful, ensuring that those following the AIP diet don't feel deprived of delicious meals.
Additionally, the book delves into the importance of lifestyle factors such as sleep, stress management, and physical activity in managing autoimmune conditions. This holistic approach aligns with the growing recognition that health is not just about diet but also about the overall well-being of an individual.
While "The Simple AIP Handbook" is a comprehensive guide, it may benefit from more in-depth scientific explanations for readers who are interested in a deeper understanding of the AIP protocol. Additionally, it's important to note that dietary changes like those prescribed in the AIP protocol can be challenging for some individuals to maintain in the long term. The book might have provided more guidance on how to overcome common hurdles and stay motivated.
In summary, this book is a great guide for anyone wanting to learn more about AIP!

I wouldn’t describe The Simple Autoimmune Protocol Handbook as simple, but it is a detailed, informative, and helpful book if you’re looking to ease chronic inflammation and stem a leaky gut.

Author George Kelly, a registered dietician nutritionist who specializes in these sorts of health issues, can write the heck out of the benefits of an avocado, as just one example of a particular food. His information on extra virgin olive oil and especially coconut oil made me run out and get those items. This is a book that may inspire you to live a healthier life.

I bookmarked quite a bit in this handbook and came across some interesting factoids. One of them was that nuts can be hard on the digestive system, so it’s best to soak them before eating. Likewise, vegetables are super healthy but are taxing to digest, so Kelly recommends “raw, cold-pressed vegetable juices” as another healthy option to give your body a break.

Kelly’s passion for conveying this information and the research he has done are impressive. I wish he could personalize his writing more, and I also think he could do a better job of relating the humanity of eating food. It’s only human to eat unhealthily from time to time, and the author could acknowledge that. The average person is not going to be able to stick strictly to the off-the-beaten-path “ancestral” diets he recommends, though people who are truly sick might. And is it really so awful to eat “nightshade” foods?

It was a nice touch to include links to products, such as some of the oils I mentioned above, so that people can discover and easily purchase the healthiest available products. Unfortunately, however, the links weren't working on my Kindle Fire.

Overall, this handbook is loaded with outstanding advice on what to eat and information on how certain food items can help or harm you.

Unfortunately, while the author clearly worked hard on this book, it falls far short from "simple." It's chock full of terms I've never heard of, though I'm more educated and informed than most. Even when the author defines some of the terminology, the definitions contain more scientific, multi-syllabic words. Beyond this, there's a good amount of contradictory information. For example, red peppers are good but also bad. It's "not allowable", yet it's a main ingredient in perhaps the only recipe offered. Bacon's a main ingredient too. With only one recipe, I'd think a much healthier one would be provided. Black pepper is allegedly bad, which I understand has a positive impact on the immune system. Garlic is blatantly missing from any lists, though it has curative affects. An explanation regarding all of the foods on the "Not Allowable" list would help. Quinoa is on a bad but also good list, and much more. Ironically, basic fruits are defined in great detail, while significant terms and processes that involve the gut aren't explained in a user-friendly manner. There's also a "test" in the book that's confusing. Some answers have a score next to them, and others don't. Plus, this "test" indicates that if you were born via C-section, for example, you're vastly more prone to autoimmune disorders. But that simply can't be true or proven. If you live a healthy lifestyle, manner of delivery at birth likely has no impact whatsoever on your health. Many references are listed in the bibliography, but no research at all is cited within the pages. I'm left more confused as to how best to address my gut health than I was when I began to read this "simple" handbook.

Discovering "The Simple AIP Handbook" has truly changed the game for me on my journey to better health. This book isn't just your typical guide to the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) program – it's a full-on manual covering everything from what to eat to the mental side of adopting AIP.

What I appreciate the most is how this book takes a holistic approach. It's not just about listing foods; it dives into the real challenges of starting and living with AIP. The tips on handling social situations, making lifestyle changes, and focusing on mindset are genuinely practical.

I also like that the book backs up its info with references to studies. It gives the whole thing a solid foundation and lets you dig deeper if you want to.

The section on autoimmune diseases is eye-opening. It goes beyond diet, touching on sleep, stress, and emotional support – a great resource for anyone dealing with autoimmune conditions.

The addition of healthy recipes with nice pictures is a nice touch. It adds a down-to-earth dimension to the book and makes the switch to the AIP diet seem less daunting.

Sure, some parts might get a bit technical, especially if you're not used to scientific terms. But the real value lies in the insights about different foods and how they can affect your health. Learning about various food types, their benefits, and related conditions helped me create a plan that fits my needs.

In a nutshell, "The Simple AIP Handbook" has become a valuable companion on my journey to better autoimmune wellness. Whether you're thinking about the AIP diet or just want a holistic approach to health, this book gives you a ton of info, practical tips, and tasty recipes – worth a read.

The Simple AIP Handbook by George Kelly is an excellent resource for those looking to heal their leaky gut and reverse autoimmunity through an ancestral approach to nutrition. The book provides a simple and comprehensive guide to the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) diet, which involves eliminating inflammatory foods and replacing them with nutrient-dense, whole foods.

The author begins by explaining what leaky gut and autoimmunity are and how they are related to the foods we eat. He then lays out the basic principles of the AIP diet, including which foods to avoid and which foods to eat in abundance. The book includes a variety of delicious and easy-to-follow recipes, as well as practical tips for implementing the diet and maintaining it long-term.

What sets this book apart is the author's approach to the AIP diet as an ancestral way of eating. Rather than simply providing a list of dos and don'ts, the author provides a deep understanding of how our ancestors ate and how we can learn from them to support our own health. This approach makes the diet feel less like a restrictive plan and more like a lifestyle that is nourishing and sustainable.

Overall, The Simple AIP Handbook is an excellent resource for anyone looking to improve their health and well-being through nutrition. One of the strengths of this handbook is its detailed explanation of the science behind AIP. It goes beyond mere dietary do's and don'ts, delving into the root causes of autoimmunity and how AIP addresses these. This scientific grounding is invaluable for readers looking to understand not just how to follow the protocol, but why certain foods and practices are recommended or avoided. The book is particularly user-friendly, with a step-by-step guide that includes food lists, meal planning, and even batch cooking tips. This makes the transition to AIP less daunting, especially for those new to such a restrictive diet. Additionally, the inclusion of over 100 recipes ensures that readers have a variety of options to keep meals interesting and enjoyable, which is crucial for long-term adherence to any diet. However, what sets this handbook apart is its emphasis on personalization and flexibility within the AIP framework. The author recognizes that individual tolerances and preferences vary, offering guidance on how to tailor the diet to fit personal needs and circumstances. This approach enhances the book's relevance to a broader audience, including those with specific food intolerances.

This book is filled with flavors and variety of taste depending on your taste bud. Like almost every cookbook out there, I thought this was going to be another dieting recipe book. I love that the author provided a section food preparation before the week start. If you are a busy kind of person like me, I tend to prepare myself on all the meals for the family before the week start. Not only that, but this author also provided different types of foods that can be very useful when you are planning for meals. The most important of the whole book is that these food helps your inflammation and your gut. When you reach of age like me, this book comes in handy that allows me to make food that reduce my inflammation. Basically, less pain for your body. Avocado and oily food sticks out on my mind that would help me a lot when it comes to body pain. The other unexpected is eating eggs, eggs tend to trigger the immune system that’s already working for the body. Great read and learned a lot! I recommend this book!

This was great information, even though it seems to be common sense. It starts with an autoimmunity self-test. The main takeaways are eat lots of veggies and fruit and cut down on carbs. It really explains why each food is beneficial and what food to avoid for autoimmune disorders.

There are a few surprises too. I didn’t know eggs, nuts and seeds, legumes and nightshade vegetables are are triggers. Eggs are highly allergenic and can aggravate a tired immune system, for example. Fruit can heal the body and we should eat plenty of fruits and berries. Fats are important too. Fatty vegetables like olives and avocados are especially nutritious.

The book explains the symptoms of autoimmune spectrum and what it does to our bodies. It details certain diet plans such as the paleo diet and intermittent fasting.

Overall, this guide was useful as a reminder and to teach new ways of eating to overcome autoimmune problems.

This is such a great book. I've been suffering with itchy skin and joint pain for a long time, so I bought this book and I'm so glad I did. It is very very informative, it gives you the information you need/want in a professional way. The recipes are awesome (love just love the orange vinaigrette), but I have to admit that I enjoyed trying the recipes more than I did for the health benefits. (Hello bacon wrapped avocado!) This is a must read for anyone like me who is trying to naturally heal oneself and who suffer from Autoimmune disease, IBS, and/or Crohn's Disease. But you don't have to be suffering those to enjoy the book and reap its benefits. One of the things that really surprised me with FODMAP/AIP diet was finding out that fermented food (which is awesome for good gut flora) can trigger histamines! I was floored by this! The things I thought were good for me were actually triggering my allergies. Anyway, this a must-have book in your recipe collection.

This book is more than a primer in pretty much everything you need to know to get on the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) program. One of the things I liked the most was that it didn't just focus on food and diet, and gives plenty of tips on the psychological part of starting and incorporating this, including social interactions, lifestyle changes, and the importance of your mindset. It also discusses practical things such as travel and planning in relation to the diet. Throughout the book, and listed in the back, are all the studies and references, which is a nice touch if you want to go further on your own.

Lastly, I really liked how it takes a holistic approach, focusing on food, exercise, and various other factors to help manage autoimmune conditions. This is way more than just a diet book, and even if you don't want to start eating differently, you can still learn a lot from this workbook. The recipes and meal planning suggestions are a great addition as well!

Highly recommend this book to individuals dealing with autoimmune disorders, particularly those affecting the digestive tract. The author does not promise a cure for autoimmune conditions, which would be unrealistic. Instead, he provides valuable diet suggestions to help minimize the associated side effects. The book offers comprehensive food lists, nutritional information, and specific diet durations, making it a practical guide.

The book delves into a modified version of the Paleo diet and extensively covers natural healing through food recommendations. It places a special focus on fruits. What sets this book apart is the substantial scientific evidence supporting the claims presented. Nevertheless, it's essential to recognize that certain foods considered off-limits in this diet might be encouraged in other dietary approaches, and vice versa.

This book is awesome and offers a natural approach to manage autoimmune symptoms. The author explains how AIP works and its benefits, like reducing inflammation and improving gut health. In case you did not know, AIP is a modified version of the Paleo diet that is designed to tackle autoimmune symptoms through dietary changes. I love how the author goes over the primary causes of autoimmune disease, like immune dysregulation and gut health. I really liked how the author not only lists foods to avoid and include in your diet, but also the science behind AIP. The author does a good job explaining why certain foods can exacerbate autoimmune conditions. Something super unique about this book is that it addresses potential challenges and provides strategies for getting around social situations and dining out.

I enjoyed this cookbook. I have Hashimoto's and there are a lot of simple recipes that I found enjoyable. This isn't only a recipe book, though. There is so much more in here about AIP's, what they are, what foods do to them. I learned a lot about soy and wheat that I didn't know before, but that make sense. I even took some things out of my diet, and I noticed a change in 3-4 weeks. It was amazing. I've had a hard time losing weight and maintaining a normal sleep schedule, but since I've made changes, those things are going away. It's not a quick and easy change to make, you must be ready for it, but making that decision has made so much of my life easier. This book is amazing, well written, and super informative.

Very enlightening timeless read

This book was super enlightening to say the least. I have suffered from many ailments and doctors have led me astray with dietary suggestions that only exacerbated my ailments.

This book not only counters the mainstream thinking, but also emphasizes why you should seek the advice of a nutritionist or dietician and not just your regular physician. This book outlined not only what you should eat and why, but what you should not eat and why. A must read.

This is the first book I read from George Kelly and I must say it was such an informative, knowledgeable read about how important certain diets are to sustain a healthy, long-lasting life. This book partly focuses on the modern day issues on eating processed foods items from meat companies without knowing what they're animals are being treated with. Cows, pigs and chickens for example are drugged with gmo and other unhealthy supplements that cause the meat to have all sorts of unknown bacteria.

What the author address in this book is that we should choose to have a nutritional diet similar to our ancestors and this book also addresses the health benefits and vitamins of all types of fruits, vegetables, etc. It suprised in many ways what kinds of foods human being should be eating more and less of, the author did a well job of researching these types of food items.

If you're looking for a guide on how to make nutritious foods , this book will be just right for you.

A back to the basics approach to a healthy diet.

Includes four ancestral diets! This book is a must have for anyone looking for a healthier diet. With autoimmune disorders or gut issues, a back to the basics approach is best. Here, the author does an excellent job of explaining why while suggesting many beneficial dietary changes. My absolute favorite part of the book was the focus on the four ancestral diets: Ice Age, Scavenger Paleo, Tribal Paleo, Healthy Homesteader.

A must read for anyone wanting to follow AIP

This book is easy to follow and well researched. I couldn’t put it down once I started reading, I’ve done an AIP plan in the past but this has different information for me. We try really hard to eat all organic and stay away from fast food and GMO’s. It’s almost overwhelming the amount of “diets” there out there. The author does a great job of making this easy to understand and follow.

Ready to implement.

Excellent book which provides a host of knowledge for people suffering with autoimmune disorders. I regularly get stomach cramps after certain foods so have been looking to implement an elimination diet. After reading most of the book I will implement the guidance from chapter 3 where the author details 4 ancestral diets and you pick one to follow, I won’t spoil too much but this chapter had me particular hooked.

THis is a whole new way to look at dieting

If you think about food from the viewpoint of something we do then your missing the point. Food is the building blocks of our lives. If you have a proper diet then you are going to have a better life, this book takes that concept to the next level. How to eat before process foods started trying to kill us.
