Who Will Believe You?: My story of survival, and finding the courage to fight back

Rate this book
Kim Chown was just 11 when her father Bernard Beaumont took her from her mother to Kenya. There, he tormented Kim with extreme sexual and emotional abuse, safe in the knowledge that as a pillar of the expat community his word would be believed over hers.

Aged 20, Kim returned to England permanently, where she built a new life and a new family. However, she could not escape her father's influence, and eventually descended into alcoholism. But, after almost losing her life, Kim fought back. With the support of her husband and adult children, she finally faced her father in court and won justice for his shocking crimes.

This is one woman's inspiring true story of overcoming horrific abuse to build a happy life - against the odds.

I initially read about this terrible case in the newspaper, and the victim had stated she was bringing a book out to explain in more detail her horrible experiences, so when I saw the book was out I jumped on it.
Kim was taken to Kenya to live with her father aged just 11 years old. Her father was an intelligent, eloquent university Professor and Kim was excited to be living in such a peaceful and beautiful place. What she didn't realise however until it was too late was that her father was also a narcissistic, monstrous paedophile who abused her physically, mentally and then sexually. By the age of 15 she had already become pregnant twice, both times by her father, who then tried to terminate her baby with a coat hanger. It makes your heart hurt just to think about it. Kim's story of survival and courage really blows my mind and I have so much respect for this strong-willed lady.

Wow what a amazing and horrific story. What that poor girl went through. Glad to see justice was done in the end. Such a shame her family couldnt support her. Well done for speaking out.

Wow..

Well where do I start?

What an inspiration this women is, the things she went through as a small child and progressed into her early teens and twenties. Forever living everyday with the trauma of what had happened to her. Worried about seeking help or advice with the threat of what her dad had over her head. It was incredibly hard to read but also I couldn't put it down.

I really hope that in future their family can come back together again and be as close as they were when reading the first few pages. I don't think I could ever go through what Kim did especially without the support of my siblings.

I well and truly take my hat off to Kim. How proud you must be of yourself to not overcome because like she said it'll always be in the back of her mind but to put it aside and focus on what is important in her life.

Definitely a need to read.

DNF Far too disturbing for me especially as it was a true story and there are so many children out there who have been or are being subjected to such debased torture and cruelty at the hands of family members. These are supposed to be the people we trust the most but instead they abuse that trust and put a different face on to the world when they step out of the door.

What a horrendous childhood this girl had, to be sexually, physically and emotionally abused by someone that she should have been able to trust and go to, to protect her. Instead you have an intellectual paedophile. I am afraid I would never be able to forgive my siblings for supporting their Father after knowing what he had done and was capable of. This is certainly not an easy read.

Brave story to tell

This book is hard to read in places. Although I am so grateful that she shared her story, it will help other people know that they are not alone and that you will be believed.

Kim Chown's story is horrific and a hard read at times. It's hard to imagine how a father could treat his own daughter this way, but to see how the rest of her family treated and manipulated her, especially when seeking justice, was also very disturbing. Kim is a very brave and inspirational woman.

Sad but true

What a brave woman, a very sad story, but I’m glad she came though in the end to a place that’s better, even if the struggles are always present
