"I Remain" is a collection of short stories set in Depression-era Iowa following four families closely as they navigate love, loss and hard times. The book opens with William Bucksman and his family losing the farm. They are forced to sell all their possessions to settle their debts, but Bucksman's wife manages to smuggle her prized possession -- a piano -- out of reach. The families are plagued by grasshoppers, blizzards, fires and feral dogs; they fight against government forcing them to plant certain crops, slaughter certain animals and build roadways across their property. The stories span decades as the close knit farmers watch their children grow up and move into town; and those children watch their grandchildren self-destruct.The stories examine the relationships between men and women during those hard times, and what people are willing to do to survive.
