Another great book in the Sweetwater Ranch Series.

Ryker is a millionaire and he has to throw a ball and marry the girl of his dreams during the ball. It's a stipulation in his contract, if he doesn't then he forfeits his inheritance. It's a Cinderellla story except instead of the evil stepsisters these are just lazy step sisters. They want and expect Nell to do whatever they ask her to do. She does whatever they tell her because if she doesn't her StepDa will threaten to throw her out.

The Narrator Jay Dyess does an excellent job with the voices and really makes you involved in the story. He does an awesome job.

Looking forward to the next book in the series. So glad that I read a Jessie Gussman story.

[BOOK 6 OF THE SWEET WATER RANCH SERIES: FORMERLY TITLED "COWBOYS DON'T BELIEVE IN FAIRY TALES"; NOW TITLED "THE COWBOY'S FAIRY TALE"]

A Cinderella-flavored story

I generally like Cinderella stories, but I have to agree with those who found Nell's story to be a bit too frustrating & depressing. Ryder comes across as overly passive at times, but at least by the end his armor really shines. I did really enjoy the fairytale ending

*Clean romance level: sweet kisses, nothing graphic

I was so excited to read this Cinderella retelling set in North Dakota with cowboys, and this book did not disappoint. Though at times the plot was a little unrealistic, I really did like this version of the classic tale. This story had all the classic elements of a Cinderella tale - step sisters, shoes, and a ball. The ball was lovely and the ending was perfect and so sweet. Really really enjoyed this book. 4.5 stars

Great story with some elements of Cinderella retold in a modern tale but with lots of differences as well. Clean and no swearing. Some former characters from a previous story make a brief appearance but this story can be read as a stand-alone. Since the start of this one I’ve been sooooo curious about “Preacher” and I can’t wait to read his story. This book does end on a bit of a cliffhanger with the intent for the reader to learn Preacher’s story next. I’m looking forward to reading it!

Exciting

A bit different, this story is a modern telling of Cinderella! And I was halfway through the book before I realized it! A very sweet story of love overcoming all! Great read!

A Successfully Reimagined Fairy Tale

In The Cowboy's Fairy Tale, book 6 in her Sweet Water Ranch series, Jessie Gussman reimagines the classic Cinderella story. Sometimes these stories get unrecognizable and lose the magic of the original. Jessie Gussman gets it right!
Ryder Peterson is neither a prince nor a recipient of a "get married, stay in North Dakota, inherit a billion dollars" letter. As the heir to his great-uncle's ranch and New York-based import/export business, Ryder needs to fulfill the letter's terms, but he must also host a masked ball at the ranch and choose a bride there--all things he dismisses as "stupid and dumb". But he wants the money and position from the business, so he gamely has invitation brochures printed and drives to North Dakota.
Nell Easterly is not a current or future princess. She's the de facto servant of her stepfather Tom and stepsisters, Brittney and Bethany. Beth really takes advantage and demands that Nell cut her long blonde hair short, agrees that Nell will make 1000 whoopie pies for an event the next morning, and insists that Nell move out of their shared room into the eaves--servants' quarters. Whenever Nell says anything to him, Tom says she has to earn her keep and is welcome to leave. Not wanting to break her promise to her dying mother to look after little Vinton, Nell swallows her anger and does what's asked of her.
When Nell gets a flat tire on the highway and a mysterious stranger in a sports car and business suit changes it for her, then gives her a ball brochure and a pair of fancy shoes as if compelled by a force beyond him, the two meet. But true to the story, he doesn't know who she is.
Nell, thinking she won't be allowed to attend the ball, hopes she can get a part-time job as a server. Clay, the ranch foreman nicknamed the Preacher after his straight-arrow beliefs and actions, convinces Tom to let her work half-weeks until the ball, with her wages going directly into his account because she "owes him" for the "room" (eave space) he has to keep open for her. Ridiculous, Ryder thinks. But Nell wants to be like her saintly mother and agrees to his demands. They go to the ranch, where she works on the grounds design with Ryder's sister Roxie. There's no equivalent to Roxie in the original, but it shows Nell's ability to charm someone whose prickly outside hides a tender interior. Roxie likes Nell but realizes she'd wither in New York, so she advises her brother to choose a woman who knows his world. Her friend Michelle is ideal. Suddenly, Michelle appears at the ranch and interrupts Ryder when he's about to kiss Nell. Ryder isn't only into Nell, however; he's spending time with Clay and falling in love with North Dakota ranching. NYC business--and Michelle--can't compare.
A few nights before the ball, Ryder and Nell talk about their mutual attraction and potential long-term issues, which they leave unresolved.
The morning of the ball, Nell sees Michelle with her blonde hair cut short but doesn't think much of it. She also learns that she will have a 30-minute break during the evening. She asks Beth to borrow her own dress for the break, and Beth refuses but then has an apparent change of heart. When Nell appears in her own dress, Ryder tells her he'll choose her. But...
When Nell meets Beth in the pantry and returns the dress, Beth dashes away and locks Nell in the dark room. Used to solving problems at home, Nell unlocks the door and dons an empty flour sack as a dress. She hurries to the ballroom and sees Ryder unmask the woman in her dress--Michelle!
Knowing Beth and Michelle conspired to give Michelle a victory and Nell a defeat, Nell takes the mike and identifies the dress, scarf, and shoes as hers. Before Michelle can grab the mike back, a man claiming to have made the shoes asks Ryder what happened when he came toward Michelle. Ryder describes resistance, even though he thought the masked woman was Nell. Were the shoes magic?
By going back on his irrevocable choice, Ryder surrendered his inheritance, but he gained what made him happier: Nell, a ranch (hers since Tom sold it to move out of state), Vinton (they adopted him since Tom's new woman didn't want him in her house), and even a billion dollars because he married and settled in North Dakota...a very different ending from the original, but still happily ever after!
I was pleasantly surprised by this modern fairy tale and highly recommend it! Go Jessie!

If romance fans enjoy the Cinderella trope for their heroine, then this author has written a book filled with all the best parts to entertain her readers.

In this version, there is the step-father, two step-sisters and a younger half-brother. The yoke of responsibility that tethers Nell to her family farm is her half-brother, Vinton. Her love is so strong that it carries her through the times that would break a less determined person. Her respect and adoration of her deceased mother, and her guidance and advice while she was alive, buoys Nell up when she needs it the most. It’s said that the meek shall inherit the earth, but being meek doesn’t mean a person doesn’t stand up for themselves. It means they have an inner strength that a lot of people can’t fathom, and when something is really important, they step up to the plate with dignity and stand for what they believe in. They choose their battles with wisdom. Nell wouldn’t believe that of herself, but that’s what I saw. It may not come out until the end of the novel, but again, that’s when it counts the most and the author made sure readers would cheer for her heroine when the time came.

Ryder is the hero with a lot riding on his shoulders. He’s rich because he worked hard and is dedicated to what he does – so dedicated that it cost him in his first marriage. The author has the hero growing emotionally and in maturity during the course of The Cowboy’s Fairy Tale so that clarity comes to him. It takes getting to know Nell and Vinton to show him the way and I enjoyed watching all those baby steps and seeing how they guide him.

There were secondary characters of import besides Nell’s step-sisters. There is Roxie, Ryder’s sister, and then there’s Michelle, a character I didn’t like at all. I’m sure that was the point, and the author created an effective plot conflict using Michelle’s conniving and manipulative actions as she aimed to get what she wanted. I think that’s also where I had a hard time in the book. The angst got to me. When a certain scene came up, I knew exactly what was going to happen and I despised that eye-roll moment but I couldn’t help myself. I got that feeling of “oh, come on!” and I couldn’t take it. I walked away from the story for a bit. But, I had to come back; I had to know how the happily ever after could overcome what was going to transpire. I have to give the author credit, it didn’t play out exactly as I expected. It was much more devious than that. So, when Nell decided it was time to make her move, to finally stand up for what was of the utmost importance, she didn’t disappoint. She did it with dignity while wearing a fashion statement that is sure to never be forgotten. It was a little over the top, but then again, what Cinderella-themed trope isn’t? It wouldn’t work otherwise.

The happily ever after does occur but again, not quite in the way readers may expect. That fact makes this book stand out. It’s not expected perfection, but it is perfect and in line with what I enjoyed in the previous story, The Cowboy’s Convenient Marriage, and it’s what makes The Cowboy’s Fairy Tale well worth reading. And, just like the previous book I read, the author includes a hook in the epilogue to get a reader interested in the next story. I believe it’s about Clay, a/k/a Preacher. He’s a nice guy and he’s helped the heroes and heroines in previous stories so it sounds like he’s overdue for his own HEA. It’s something to look forward to, that’s for sure.

The Cowboy's Fairytale is the obvious retelling of the Cinderella story with Jessie's own take on it, and what a take it is! There's certainly Cinderella Nell and the Prince Ryker, as well as the evil sisters (readers will especially love to hate one of them). I liked their meet-cute, and how the reader gets to see his compassionate nature and willingness to help from the start. The romance is the author's usual brand of slow-burn sizzling sweet, but their first kiss is well worth the wait. I liked Nell's kind disposition, her outlook on life and her choice to remain happy no matter what life threw at her, as well as her fierce love for her brother. I also enjoyed Ryker's growth throughout the story, learning the ropes of being a foreman and not being afraid of hard work. I think either I didn't get the explanation behind the shoes or it could have been explained better. Oh, and that ending was equal parts nail-biting and pretty much unexpected.

Jay did his usual great job, just as he's been doing so far in the series, bringing all the characters to life and pulling off both sophisticated adults, ranchers, as well as children. His including some of the laughs or sighs when a character is talking definitely made for a better experience.

A nice continuation to the Sweet Water Ranch series, perfect for lovers of Sweet Romance, Jessie Gussman, Jay Dyess as a narrator, and/or Contemporary fairytale retellings. I can't wait to read "Preacher"/Clay's story. ~ 4 stars

according to the will, he had to marry and live with his wife for a year in order to inheriant.
on his way to the small town he finds a girl on the side of the road with a flat tire. she could change it herself and doesnt think some rich guy in a sports car all dressed up with soft hands could do it but he did. he gave her fantastic shoes (too big) and a flier to a ball. it said they needed servers paying $500

her mom had died and she stayed with the step dad and step siblings, she didnt want to leave her younger brother. the step dad was controlling and she wanted to make money to take her brother and leave but he made her work the ranch with the money going back into the ranch. she had 2 step sisters

she went to the ranch to apply for the job, she got it and they said she could bring her step brother with her. the man from the side of the road was there and he said he would drive them to and from, even though it was 2 hrs each way

she got a dress and the shoes fit but her stepsister took them away from her. at the ball she was locked in the pantry when the girl who wanted to marry him took her dress and shoes. he picked her by mistake, but when he saw who it was, he backed out. lost the inheritance but married the girl he loved. he bought her family farm and they were able to raise her step brother there. he ended up getting a billion dollars but not the business or his uncles ranch

I don't know if I should consider this book adorable or cheesy. It did feel a little out there, like it wasn't plausible. I've seen some people say that Nell doesn't feel real because no one would take the abuse that she takes. Honestly, though, she is trying to fulfill her mother's wish and take care of her brother, who she will do anything for. This felt real.

The book's description felt a bit off to me. While it's technically right, it really doesn't capture the essence of the story. Nell and Ryder met before the ball, and instead of the ball being where the story really begins, it's more of the icing on the cake.

I have not read other books in this series, and I caught on to the story from the beginning. It's definitely not necessary to read the previous books, although I may go back and do that. It does look like the next two books in the series will connect well with this story, though.

This was a clean book. There's no swearing, sex, or physical violence. As is to be expected from a Cinderella story, our main character is mistreated by her family. There's financial, verbal, and mental abuse. There's gaslighting. There are threats that keep her doing what they want her to do. People who have suffered this type of abuse will either relate well to Nell or will find it hard to read this book.

Cinderella and the billionaire cowboy

When Ryder stopped to change a flat tire for Nell on a cold North Dakota highway it started a chain of events that could lead to love or a disaster. It certainly seemed it would be disaster from time to time. Nell is living the cinderella life with a step father and two step sisters who treat her like the hired help. She does everything from styling hair to doing all the work on the ranch. I truly felt sorry for her and was amazed at her ability to stay up beat through all of her trials. She could leave but she had promised her mother to take care of her young brother who is eleven.

Ryder is disapointed with the stipulations in his uncle's will. He had been groomed to be the heir but his uncle had put a weird stipulation in his will that he was having a hard time accepting. He also didn't want to lose everything including his position as head of the company.

The two are as opposite as can be. I liked seeing them deal with what they wanted and what was practical. The ending was great.

If you like a love story about the couple learning about each other and developing a real relationship not their adventures in the bedroom this series is for you. It was not what I had expected by i loved it.

Overall, I enjoyed this as an audiobook. I have never been big into fairy tales (Snow White, Cinderella, etc) however, I did like the description of this story. The beginning was a bit too Cinderella (complete with evil step sisters) for my taste and I felt the main female character was very weak (although the reason for this was somewhat explained later in the book--making it a little understandable--although I kept wanting her to get more of a backbone early in the book). However, as the book progressed, this Cinderella retelling took on it's own unique storyline and I ended up really enjoying the book by the end. The narrator is wonderful with a very smooth but a little rough quality at the same time. He really made the story come to life. I will look to listen/read other stories of this series. I received a copy of the audiobook for free from the author at my request and am leaving this honest review voluntarily.

This sweet, clean romance is a quirky retelling of Cinderella. Nell works her hands to the bone doing everything for her step-father in order to "pay" for her room and board. Her two step sisters order her around like she is only a made. Nell made a promise to her mother on her death bed to take care of Nell's half brother, Vinton, and to do it cheerfully. When Nell first meets Ryder, he stops on the interstate to change Nell's flat tire in a very expensive suit and high priced shoes. When Nell goes to Sweet Water Ranch to apply for a job, she again meets Ryder but has no idea who he is yet. Her high school friend, Clay, aka Preacher, introduces them but doesn't tell Nell who Ryder is. Ryder is the nephew of the old owner of Sweet Water Farm. In order to inherit a billion dollars and his company that he has worked at for the past decade, he has to hold a masked ball and at the end of the night, name his bride. This is a delightful tale!

A flour sack?
This is a variation of Cinderella. A very good one. Ryker is the one who needs to find a bride. Nell is the Cinderella. Furthermore, there is magic involved with the shoes; and other things on Sweet Water Ranch. And of course there wouldn’t be a Cinderella without the…(awful stepfather?) I like the way Ms Jessie Gussman wrote this version. Also, I loved the performance of Jay Dyess. He has a broad spectrum of voices that flows seamlessly throughout the story. Very easy to listen to. I think I have mentioned this time and time again about his performances but it bears repeating. Of course this wouldn’t be a true fairy tale without the HEA. But don’t expect everything to turn out hunky dorie. We still have a number of books left in this series which I will be listening to. I highly recommend this series wholeheartedly. What have you got to lose? Not much because this whole series is available for practically nothing.

The Cowboy's Fairy Tale - I love this story!

I love this story. In the end, it wasn't about the money as it was about finding his "forever girl." They would make their way in their own world.

Here is a quote from this story:

"When you get married, it seems like you'd want to build something together, rather than be isolated in your own world. Shared goals, shared dreams, shared workload. I mean, I know it's not possible all the time, but don't you feel a special, stronger, connection with someone that you build something with? Wouldn't that make a marriage stronger?" This really makes you think.

Check out the next book in this series: The Cowboy's Secret Romance (Sweet Water Ranch Western Cowboy Romance Book 6) Called "The Preacher", Clay Stryker has lived a life as straight as a North Dakota highway. Reina Hall has never forgotten the night she was rescued from a child trafficking ring. Enjoy and happy reading, darlings!

I know that I read and thought I had reviewed this book in March, but finding no review, I must have missed that (due to a fall on the ice and the COVID shutdown in our community). As with all of her stories Jessie has crafted another story that can't help but touch readers of all spectrums. This story of Nell and Ryder doesn't disappoint. I enjoy the way Jessie weaves her characters so beautifully around their faith and God's unfailing grace and His love for we simple humans. (Nell's faith to the promise she made her mother was WOW, but the aggressive nature of her step-father was a bigger WOW.). There are some real life issues in this story that Jessie handles superbly, IMO.

I did receive an ARC copy of this book, but this is my voluntary and honest review with my own personal opinions.

This book was well written with an interesting story line and likable, well developed characters. The audio was well done by the narrator. I really enjoyed reading this book - there was only one draw back for me. Some of the language. Now, this story was clean with no cuss words, per se, but there were what I would consider questionable words in the story. This might not bother some people, but if this were the first book I had read by Jessie Gussman, I probably wouldn't read any more. I have read several of her titles and thoroughly enjoyed them all and have not seen any issues with language in the other titles I have read. There was enough in this book that I felt they were worth mentioning. Otherwise, this was a great, clean read.

I love a princess-type story! This was exactly that except with a few tweaks. It was like the tale of Cinderella with the shoe that fit perfectly and the ball with Prince Charming. I do like Cinderella’s tale, except the part about the step-sisters! Oh, and the step-father. It angered me so much that Nell did everything and especially being volunteered to make a thousand pies within an evening! Ridiculous! However, Nell was graceful always and didn’t let anything or anyone get her down. That is hard to do.

Next story is The Cowboy’s Secret Romance which I believe is about Preacher and Angela.

Jessie Gussman can spin a tale better than anyone I know! This is the sixth book in the Sweet Water Ranch series and just like the previous books, this one kept me spell-bound. It's reminiscent of Cinderella with an unexpected twist at the end. Well actually with more than one unexpected twist at the end. I love that each book is a stand-alone story but at the same time incorporates the main character for the next story in such a way that just leaves you wanting more. I listened to this on Audio and Jay Dyess is absolutely awesome in taking you off the page and placing you in the middle of the action.

Don't give up

Beth and Britt, although being twins there was a significant difference between them. Beth was cruel and selfish, and jealous, doing anything to anyone to get what she wanted. Britt being kinder and not nearly like Beth still had a self-centered streak which showed up when Nell returned the first time. Ryder showed himself to be the true gentleman he was raised to be by staying and caring for Nell with the cookies and forcing the girls to clean up before they were allowed to leave. If more people were content, and didn't try to outshine others, but to learn to live with the traits of Nell folks would find their lives much happier. 5 stars

she is working at her house as if she was a servant. His stepfather and stepsister treat her without respect but she promised her mother that she would take care of his little brother. I loved the message and the sweet fairytale retelling of Nell, a woman who believes that we can all choose happiness, just like Paul and Silas did (Acts 16:25), even when we are sad and mistreated.
This happiness calls to Ryder, who sees the true beauty of this Cinderella in green sockhat (beanie, toboggan, knitted cap, whatever you call it). Will his reluctance to give up the life he’s always known prevent him from letting go of his control and choosing happiness for himself?

Yep. A fairy tale.

If the story of Ford and Morgan was North Dakota's version of Beauty and the Beast, this is a tale of "North Dakota Cinderella"! Definitely not the Disney version: no singing birds, no pumpkins. Nell, with her sweet nature and her ability to smile in the face of hardship and to serve others, reminded me of my precious grandmother.

This story brings out so many emotions. The retelling of Cinderella in modern times just brought this story to life. The way Jessie Gussman told this story made it feel like I was there. I got so mad at some of the characters but that just means that Jessie did a phenomenal job of writing. I would recommend everyone read this book and this series. Awesome job by Jessie Gussman.

Wow! A story with great characters. I could relate right away with Nell. I have seen things like what happened to her happen in real life. Yours, mine and ours are difficult for most families. Sometimes people like Ryder don’t know the difference between money and happiness. Glad he found out.

Cute Fairytale Retelling

This twist on Cinderella was interesting. I thought the author did a good job of creating the characters. The only part that seemed out of place was concerning the shoes. I look forward to reading the next book in the series. If you enjoy clean, contemporary, cowboy romance and fairytales, you might enjoy this book.
