I’m glad I came across this book before I spent a bunch of money on a keyboard and music lessons for my daughter. This is an excellent book for those wanting to begin learning the piano. The author covers everything you need to know as a beginner, and even teaches the basics of how to play Ode to Joy! When reading, you will learn the basics of the notes, how to play chords and scales, different rhythms, and more. The author even goes into small detail of where the piano originated from and the different ways to play. I recommend this book to any beginner pianist out there.
You have decided that you want to learn to play the piano. This book attempts to take the learner through the whole process of reading music and playing popular songs, starting with the purchase of a keyboard.
It is recommended to start on an acoustic piano. One reason for a real piano is so the learner can see the scales and chords on those 88 keys. The other reason is that, when hammers strike those strings, other strings, called overtones, also vibrate. It is not yet possible for electronic instruments to duplicate that sound. If buying a piano is not an option, then buy a digital keyboard with 76 or 88 keys. The greater number of keys will be useful when trying to play scales with both hands at once. Last, but not least, make sure your keyboard has weighted keys and is touch-sensitive. It matters.
The author also looks at reading sheet music, playing the C Major scale, rhythm, playing both hands together, major and minor keys, playing arpeggios and playing Beethoven's Ode to Joy.
This books feels comprehensive and easy to use. It all depends on the motivation of the learner. For any journey to learn the keyboard, here is a very good place to start.
For those interested in learning the basics of playing the keyboard or piano, this book is a helpful and concise guide. The author starts by breaking down music theory from its core principles and delves into essential concepts that are crucial for putting one on the path to mastery in this discipline.
As someone who used to take piano lessons and regularly played at church, I highly recommend this book as a guide. Mastering any skill takes time and effort, and this book is the perfect tool for that. It's not just a passive read; it requires practical application to be effective. The learning process requires ample time with the material.
While this book primarily caters to beginners, it can also serve as a valuable resource for those seeking a refresher on the fundamentals. Reading through the pages brought me back to my learning experiences and reinforced my understanding of the foundational concepts.
I got a lot from this book about playing piano and keyboard. Such as the concept of time signatures and the difference between ¾ and 4/4 time, which has to do with the downbeat. It really gets deep into the knowledge of playing piano and keyboard. But I especially enjoyed the chapter on improvisation. I was reminded of the great MTV show called MTV Unplugged where artists played a mostly acoustic version of songs that were written for electric guitar and other electric instruments. I definitely got more than just a keyboard tutorial from this little book.
This book showed me that it's never too late to pursue my musical dreams. The author's belief that "music is a precious gift from nature" truly resonated with me. Putting the book's insights into practice, I now feel empowered at 35 to learn the keys that I've always longed to play. This book is a must-read for anyone who's ever felt like they've missed their chance to make music.
This is an awesome book. I took piano lessons as a child, picked it back up in my twenties and now almost thirty years later wish to make the piano a regular exercise. After all I got started with piano for coordination exercises! I never really practiced as much as I should have. I’m excited to continue, as a pleasurable activity more so than a eye-hand coordination exercise, although I can use that as I age!
It was very easy to follow along. The last part of the book was really difficult. I took a piano class in high school, so it has been a while for me. However, I was a flute player for 12 years in school, so rhythms are easier for me to follow. The book doesn't have music to follow along with so some if it was confusing.
A great short introduction to a vast subject. I'm not sure you can learn to play piano in 14 days, as it says on the cover, but you certainly get a good description of the terminology, and the basic elements of theory, together with advice for good practice.
