As a first timer reading by this author i have to admit i am a fan and went ahead and bought the rest of the series!
Where do i start with this one? Right lets just say i adored how the book started with a bang right in the thick of it to get a good feel on Rowan and who she is, as she sets in motion events that will hlmake her question everything about vampires and even herself.
Rowan is a real badass with a unlucky streak to last for months eventho i feel she sometimes acts a bit silly/stupid but with her heart in the right place, it stil lands her into trouble more then once, and thats where Nate comes in saving her and helping her understand.
It brings me great joy to see Rowan blossom and learn more about vampires, how they work eventho she would rather run away at first lol.
The smexy tension between Rowan and Nate is there but also not there, i have a feeling sooner or later they will cave and well the throw caution oit the window if they ever can get over the prejudice of their species.
Im also loving how they kind of formed their own merry band of helpers so to speak, with Lena, Monica and carnell cant wait to see what they all get up to next book.
The ending didnt feel like a cliffhanger really more like an invetation to the next book a tease if you will. And boy did it work on me i went and did one click the rest of the series.
To say that Rosie has a new fan is a understatement!
I've read quite a few Vampire books lately but there's something so captivating about this one! I mean, Vampires, Witches and Valkyries all in one book! How awesome! Especially as it's a real page turning, can't put down book! I thought the plot refreshingly intriguing and really enjoyed the humour strewn throughout. Basically, the very strong, albeit highly messed up protagonist, Rowan, a Valkerie curse breaker , unintentionally releases Vampires from a tomb and causes devastation to the entire country. She barely escapes with her life and is saved by a 'good vampire'. Brought to the Vampire Embassy to recover, she learns that her blood has special qualities, which it seems, everyone is hellbent on taking. Especially the slightly crazy scientist Monica. Rowan is so distrustful of any Vampire that she escapes the safe haven. Only to end up in grave danger. Rowan tries to fix her blunder, but time after time, she ends up making everything far worse. At every turn and bad decision, Rowan is saved by the Vampire who initially brought her to the Embassy. There is something brewing between Rowan and Nate, but everyone knows, there is no way a Vampire and Valkyrie can be together, their vary natures are not comparable. Such a riveting story, full of action, misguided actions and a budding forbidden romance. The only problem I had with this book is that I have to wait for book 2!!!! Highly recommended read!

“Valkyrie Cursed” marks the start to “The Rogue Valkyrie” urban fantasy series by Rosie Wylor-Owen, who follows the adventures of Rowan McQuaid a true Valkyrie (in blood and culture) training as a curse breaker, whose job is to run into situations every sane person would rush away. Her latest job is to break the incantation on a vampire tomb somewhere in the vicinity of London for Prof. Moran, the quintessential dreaded employer. In her defense she didn’t know which kind of ‘creature’ was interred in the tomb, and well, beggars can be choosers, and after losing her curse-breaker license one month prior, Rowan qualifies as ‘beggar’ (for work at least).
“Danger. Horror lies within” stretched in Valkyrian runes as a sealing spell at the door of the tomb, a warning Rowan should have taken more serious, but remember ‘beggars’, yeap… hindsight is 20/20. Rowan broke the alleged ‘curse’, unwittingly letting a full rabid vampire brood on the loose, and almost miraculously surviving the ordeal, because let that be clear, vampire bites are as lethal to Valkyries as to everyone else, which makes Rowan immune, a kind of blessing and curse all by itself.
The vampires are hellbent on revenge, slaughtering the descendants of those witches who confined in the tomb. Rowan spill them out, and now will have to clean the mess with the help of Nate Hallewell, the enigmatic vampire that brought her into his own home after finding her in the empty tomb. Sometimes to combat a brood you need a vampire 😉
This is a good written, original, and interesting series, with a very well-crafted urban fantasy world, set in a version of England much like our own, with vampires, Valkyries and witches added in the mix. Rowan is credible character, a strong female that captivates the reader with her knowledge and hands-on philosophy and (thankfully!) doesn’t display the overbearing sassiness so in vogue in contemporary urban fantasy.
Rowan ,a Valkyrie was hired to break into a tomb that unknowingly contained rogue vampires. She's bitten, but survived. She has immunity to vampire venom. She works with the good vampires to recapture the rogue vampires.
Rowan an unlicensed Valkyrie curse breaker opens a tomb full of vampires and miraculously survived. Aided by the vampire who sealed the group in the tomb she sets out to right her wrong. Vampires, witches and the Valkyrie with a mysterious immunity to vampire bites join forces to stop any more tomb openings.
Throughout this book we follow the story of Rowan McQuaid, an unliscensed Valkyrie that ends up discovering she’s immune to vampire bites after an illegal curse breaking job goes wrong. At first she thought she was opening a tomb for a treasure and didn’t give it much thought, but when a group of angry and powerful vampires are released her life changes forever. I have to admit that the plot of this book was very interesting and had a lot of potential, which is why I didn’t feel like giving it less than 3 stars. I really enjoyed learning about the Valkyries and why vampires are such a threat to every living creature and so on because I had never read a book with Valkyries before and this was pretty interesting to see. Another thing that helped me enjoy this book was how easy it was to get through; it was fast-paced, action-packed and even fun! Now the problems I had with it weren’t the pace or the plot, it was the characters and the romance.
Personally, I didn’t really get to enjoy the romance that was supposed to blossom between Rowan (Valkyrie) and Nate (Vampire). Like yes, I understand that they were attracted to each other since the moment they met, but I just didn’t get to see enough development on said attraction to enjoy it. I didn’t feel it was forced, I just felt there were too many important things happening around them (ex: angry vampires massacring important witch covens as vengeance, being targetted by one of said strong vampires, not knowing what being inmune means or how it could change for the lives of vampires/humans/paranormals, etc) for them to actually bother developing a close relationship. In other words, I was more interested in knowing more about the vampire mess and Rowan’s immunity to actually see a point in Rowan and Nate developing a relationship and that’s probably my fault but then again…priorities in books are weird. Anyways, the other reason I didn’t love this book (or enjoyed the romance) was because of the characters. I could barely stand Rowan and how she didn’t want anyone to touch her precious blood for scientific purposes, or how she thought about her family and so on. Like I’m pretty sure that me not loving her was the reason why I wasn’t surprised by any of the things that happened by the end of the book. Now I wouldn’t say I disliked Nate, but I really didn’t care much about him. He was an ancient vampire that worked with the Vampire Embassy to create a world where vampires, humans and paranormals could live in peace until the dangerous vampires got released from the tomb and he found Rowan alive when she should’ve been dead. We don’t get to know much about him besides a little about his family ties and what he believes in, making him a little boring and not that exciting as a love interest.
In the end, Valkyrie Cursed was an action-packed and fun book until a certain point. The characters weren’t that appealing, but at least the interesting plot and the world building and information regarding the paranormal organizations and how they worked helps you get through it. If you’re looking for a fast-paced urban fantasy that involves a feud between vampires, witches, and valkyries then make sure to check this one out! Hopefully you get more into the characters than I did!
Valkyrie Cursed is the first part in Rosie Wylor-Owen'sThe Rogue Valkyrie series. What will Wylor-Owen have in store for the reader?
Not a single magical creature survives a vampire bite, but how come Rowans still feels everything after she is bitten? Is this life after death? She soon finds out that she didn't die after the vampire bite, and she was rescued by another vampire. But how did she survive the vampire bite? Can she trust her savior since he's a vampire? What happened in the tombs anyway? Slowly, Rowan learns more and more about what happened in the tombs and gets answers to her questions. But now that a group of dangerous and bloodthirsty vampires have escaped, she must stop them before more bad things happen. Will Rowan be able to put the vampires back in captivity?
Although the title suggests that Valkyries could play the main role in this story, however this is not the case. The story revolves around Rowan, a valkyrie, as well as a whole bunch of vampires.
Rosie Wylor-Owen has a great writing style. The story starts and ends with actionfilled scenes, although the middle part remains a bit more superficial. However, it is in the middle part that you get the necessary knowledge about the characters and some background information, so this part is certainly not boring.
I really enjoyed Valkyrie Cursed. The story introduced me to both Valkyries and this author. Rosie Wylor-Owen has made a very promising start for this series with this book, and I am very curious about the next installments in this series.
What a solid start to a new urban fantasy series! I was new to Rosie but decided to give her a go as the blurb looked like it had everything I liked in UF. I'm so happy that I did!
Book 1 starts out with our down on her luck FMC Rowan having to take a not-so-legal job to open an underground tomb. It turns out that the tomb was full of vampires (whose bite in the world kills all supes immediately and turns humans into vamps) who escape after killing the whole excavation crew. Rowan wakes up surprised to be alive and taken in by a not evil vampire called Nate. We find out she's immune to vampire bites which then ties her to a whole species that she's been raised to hate.
Along the way, we learn more about the world and the persecution that most vampires face. Rosie's done an excellent job at starting to build a complex world with different races and backgrounds. The side characters we meet are also intriguing and help fill in some of the blanks of the world.
Rowan is a young lead who has lead a sheltered life. She's a bit frustrating as she makes some stupid choices, but honestly, I'll take a not-so-perfect main character that learns and grows along the way any day. I have hope for her development as we dive into the rest of the series.
Nate's the guarded vampire who's lived a few lifetimes and doesn't want to get close to anyone in case he gets hurt. Needless to say, the chemistry between Nate and Rowan is hot as hell.
It took until nearly 50% in, but I ended up really enjoying Valkyrie Cursed. The writing style is very easy to read, and the story kept my interest. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
This book reminded me an awful lot of The Vampire Diaries book series. There is a very similar vibe, and the authors have a similar writing style (although, it's awhile since I read anything by L. J. Smith).
Rowan McQuaid makes a grave mistake - one that costs many lives. No longer safe, she is forced to seek sanctuary with the species she was taught to fear: vampires. Battling both her guilt and attraction, Rowan works with vampire Nate Hallewell to stop what she released onto society.
All of the characters are quite likeable (except, of course, the ones that are not meant to be). There is a lot of inner dialogue with Rowan beating herself up, but it didn't really bother me. I hope we can see some romance bloom for her - and soon!
I know Noah was only in the book for one chapter, but I really liked the sibling dynamic between him and Rowan. I'm hoping that he will play a bigger role in the following books. I'd love to see him find out about Rowan's situation and decide to get involved. Who wouldn't like a twin team?
My only criticism would be the lack of world-building. Honestly, I'm still not even sure what a valkyrie is. And I'm just guessing that the humans are aware of magic.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Rowan a rather unlucky Valkyrie has managed to lose her license in curse breaking only to take some rather unsavory jobs of the books maybe she's not really unlucky maybe she is just headstrong and has poor judgment. Well it all boils over and now she's fighting to stay alive all while needing help being rescued all because trouble is her life companion. Nate well hes the opposite doesn't much care for rule breaking because he's a Vampire and the rest of paranormal society hats Vampires so staying out of trouble is what he prefers unlucky for him he seems to have attacked himself to trouble Rowan now there chasing shady characters bent on world domination. And even though there are bad Vampires in this the other paranormal characters of there society may be even worse. This book has what is a slow burn romance with Nate and Rowan but it still has a hidden mystery of who the real power behind everything that's going on is and has a minor cliffhanger at the end. My only basic issue I feel like I want more knowledge of there world the Vampires are persecuted the witches seem to live away from everyone else and the Valkyrie seem to be over achievers but what about the humans and dose this world have know werewolves I thought all all paranormal books had werewolves it has Angel's though so that's different.
I was allowed to read and advance copy of this book via Booksprout and this is my honest review.
Valkyries, curses, witches, vampires, magical law enforcement and entombed vampires breaking out – this book has it all.
I enjoyed the twists to magical society and how it is a big part of the world, yet still hidden from humans.
Rowan’s attitude toward life, her work and her family’s interference were well-defined and believable. It also made her endearing. Rowan’s valkyrie powers intrigue me and I’d like to see her use it more. I’m intrigued by her immunity to vampire venom and all the implications of the use of her blood.
Michael and his band of psychotic vampires somehow using magic and trying to take over the world makes for a great contrast to the vampires at the Embassy. I liked how Rowan moved past the prejudices against vampires ingrained in her upbringing to come to care for her new friends and to defend them.
I liked the subtle mirror held up to society and their prejudices against a specific group of people based on fear.
I like Nate and his backstory seems to be full of things we can only guess at. The same with everybody at the Embassy.
I thoroughly enjoyed Rowan’s story and can’t wait to spend more time with her and her various friends.
Highly recommended for fans of urban fantasy, witches, vampires and sassy valkyries.
*I received an ARC from the author and this is my honest opinion.
Valkyrie Cursed is a perfect first-in-series. In just a matter of a few days, we become acquainted with Rowan McQuaid, a young (even by human standards) valkyrie codebreaker who has landed herself in a bit of a pickle. In an attempt to make a bad situation better, Rowan takes an illicit job, opening a crypt for a treasure-hunting professor. Whether the professor truly knew the nightmare he was unleashing or not is unclear but things do not end well for him--or for Rowan.
Throughout the pages of this first Rogue Valkyrie story, Rowan is forced to face her own failings as well as the injustices heaped upon an entire sect of the supernatural community. The prejudices and hardships facing the vampires of Rowan's world feel almost too real in the social climate of 2021 but Wylor-Owen takes her protagonist from arrogant ignorance to active understanding without preaching to her readers. Rowan has begun a journey of growth--individually as well as as a member of a cohesive community--by the time we close the cover on Valkyrie Cursed and anticipate Valkyrie Awakened (the second of the series).
Couple that with a gently budding romance and the Rogue Valkyrie series has a lot of potential for the future.
Rcvd an advanced reader copy from Booksprout for giving my two cents. Wow...couldn't put this book down...suspense, intrigue, judgements, secrets and blood....lots and lots of blood. We meet valkyrie Rowan, who is a curse breaker on suspension, when a professor hired her to open a tomb full of treasure....what she didn't expect was a tomb full of vampires....thr last thing she remembers is being bit by one and out. Rowan wakes up in a a strange place when a man enters a room with food and she is scared bc he looks like the vamp that bit her...wait...she's still alive after a bite? WTH!! The vamp introduces himself ad Nate and they are at the vampire embassy. Rowan plans her escape and makes it home only to be attacked by a vamp who says smtg about her blood. It keeps.getting stranger and stranger. For her safety, Rowan reluctantly packs her things and returns to the embassy. There is so much to.vampires than what she was taught but when word get out a coven of witches was slaughtered, she is bound and determined to help...but at what cost?
Oooooooo..... This is the 1st book I've read about Valkyries. I'd hate to see this gal have a bad day. Lol. I like this storyline, but if you're looking to get away from all the racism, this isn't the book you want to read. Otherwise, yes, it's about discrimination, mostly against vampires. I'm liking the valkyrie & the vampire storyline. Hope they end up together somewhere in the series, as they're learning to trust & rely on each other. This is a serial story line. I could actually stop with this 1st book & just enjoy the read, as a stand-alone. However, something happened ...right ...at ...the...end. Of course it did! lol!! Who opened the 2nd tomb? Why? When did it happen, cause everyone else was fighting? Were there any survivors? How many were let loose? Have they implemented security at all the tombs or the covens yet? Who's really behind it all? I think I need to see if book 2 needs another ARC reader. 😊Count me in!!

Rowan has lost her licence for work & has to substitute by taking on jobs under the table, but she takes the wrong job which almost ends her life. She is saved by Nate who is a vampire. But vampires don't mix well with others & now Rowan & Nate must work together to undo the trouble Rowan has unleashed.
Enjoyed the concept & the quick plot, it kept me engaged & wanting to know what comes next. Poor Rowan is attack throughout but she keeps on ticking as she feels so guilty & wants to undo her mistake. Theres a little chemistry between her & Nate. The book contains no sex scenes. There were a few sub plots that seemed to drop off halfway through. Hoping these get picked up in future instalments. We get to know a little but about Valkyrie culture but I wish it delved a little deeper as so far very interested in what has been presented.
I enjoyed this & interested to see what comes next.

This is the first book I read from this author and I couldn't stop reading. Rowan has lost her work permit and now has to take jobs that are illegal or really under the table. Without realizing it, she takes a job that should have ended her life. Fortunately, she is rescued by Nate, a vampire. But vampires don't get along well with others, and now Rowan and Nate must work together to undo the problems Rowan has caused. I like the valkyrie and the vampire storyline. I hope they get closer somewhere in the series. I have really the feeling there's something blooming between them and also because they learn to trust and build on each other. I really enjoyed this book with Valkyries, curses, witches, vampires, magical law enforcement and entombed vampires breaking out – this book has it all. I recommend this book with pleasure.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I think think this book should be considered as the first installment or episode of a serial. It's a relatively quick read with a cliffhanger ending and the author is planning another eight books in the series.
What I liked: It's well-written, fast-paced and even though it's only the first book in a series, there are already back-stories for the major characters. The hook for this book is kind of a Sam & Diane, will they or won't they story (I am pretty sure they will, but getting there is all of the fun). On top of that (or maybe underneath) we have an anti-racism theme where vampires are the subjects of racist behavior. Rowan, the Diane in this story, is a Valkyrie and Nate, the Sam, is a vampire.
For me, and maybe this is just because it's the first book, it got a little preachy and while there is a lot going on, I felt like the ending came a bit too soon to be satisfying.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Action packed from the very start, this book was hard to put down. The characters are well developed and I found myself growing attached to them very quickly.
Set in a modern urban fantasy where supernatural species have learned to coexist, Rowan gets herself in a bit of trouble and finds herself quickly allied with a mysterious vampire she finds herself inexplicably drawn to. This fast paced novel leaves you gasping and wanting more.
I cannot wait to read more about Rowan and her adventures in future novels.
I have always been a fan of The Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith and I think other fans will enjoy this as well! I also found this story to remind me of the early novels in The Anita Blake series by Laurell K Hamilton.
This novel has great potential to become a hit new series and I will be keeping my eyes out for upcoming sequels!
When you are a curse-breaker Valkyrie making a good living should be easy. But, when you are a curse-breaker Valkyrie that has lost her license and can't work legally it's really hard to pay the bills. That is why Rowan was performing an illegal curse-breaking on a tomb outside of London for a professor looking for treasure. Unfortunately, the contents were not what the professor expected to find and as the only survivor, Rowen is now in hiding from the vampire whose bite should have killed her and hoping Nexus does not find out about the part she played in opening the tomb.
What a great series starter! The plot hits the ground running and the action never stops until the end. I finished this book in one day and I can't wait to start the next one in the series. I received an advance copy but my review is honest and voluntary.
I thought this was quite entertaining, but nothing extraordinary. A perfect middle of the road read. I liked Rowan, Nate and crew. I appreciated the slow-slow burn of the maybe-future-relationship. The book is easily readable and I don't remember any big editing mishaps.
But I also didn't think the world particularly well developed. I, for example, couldn't really pick out the lines between some of the species. What made a witch and a valkyrie different, for example, other than culture? How aware was the rest of the world of paranormal? I have no idea, etc. Nor did I think Rowan's the family history adequately utilized. Though I did recognize that her and her brother's situation mirrored Nate and his cousin's.
All in all, I like it. I'd read another. But I'm not running out to buy it. (Well, I don't think a next exists yet. But you get the idea.)
Rowan is down on her luck due to a coworker’s mistake. He is an obnoxious nephew of an owner and Rowan is taking the blame. Rowan is waiting for a review of the case with no funds coming in to pay the bills. Rowan is a Valkyrie from a prestigious family, unfortunately for Rowan she is not a favored child and she does not want to bring her family into her problem. Needing funds to survive Rowan takes a sketchy job and the story takes off from there. The story has magic, mayhem, immunity, and battles between factions of vampires and the witch covens that have battled them through the ages. There is a lot going on but the story has a good stopping point and a lead into the next saga. I recommend this read.

Wow, setup you secret hiding spot, and make sure there is no interruptions, for this is a book you don't want to put down. Rowan was desperate for money, so she hired her services of curse-breaking to people up to no good. So it's of little surprise, when it all goes wrong, and she regrets her decision. Can she make up for her mistakes? She meets up with Nate (vampire), who is unlike any vampire in the stories she has been told. I loved Rowan, Nate and the others in their crew, the action/danger and mystery of why things are going on. Rowan is easy to love, she wants to do the right thing, and sometimes makes less than desirable choices, but I sort of understand her, and certainly want her to win and get the bad guys. I look forward to more answers in the next book. I am voluntarily reviewing a copy I received, and giving my thoughts and opinions on it.
I recieved this book as an arc for my honest review.
I really enjoyed this book! Even working the crazy hours i do i was reading as much as i could when i could. This book follows a strong minded gal named Rowan who is a valkyrie curse breaker. She happens to take a job she will soon regret not knowing what was inside at the time. Something is special about her and she barely survives but is saved by a vampire. Having been taught growing up vampires are evil and not to trust them it takes a lot for Rowan to let her guard down. But countless times they have saved and helped her, even if she slips up thinking shes doing the right thing to make amends for her mess. The relationship with Rowan and the vampire who saves her, Nate have is a possible love but can vampires and valkyrie really be compatible? I cant wait to read book 2 and see what in the world is going on!
At the beginning I wasn't so sure whether I would end up enjoying this book, so if you are like me and didn't get into the characters right away, stick with it, it's worth it! I really enjoyed this book and it had some surprising elements, which I always find fascinating! I mean, one would think an author can't surprise us with stories about vampires and witches anymore, but this book delivered! The story was interesting, the characters fascinating and the romance forbidden and slow burning. There is no cliffhanger in this book, but there is a hook and if you are looking for insta-love and insta-gratification, this book is not for you!

This is the 1st book I've read by Rosie Wylor-Owen at it was so great that I bought the rest of the series! The thing that drew me in most was the Valkyrie aspect. But I am also I hard-core vampire fan. Combine those 2 with witches and you can't go wrong in my mind. Rowan & Nate have wonderful character building. The world Mrs. Wylor-Owen created is very imaginative and I love it! The storyline is intriguing and keeps you turning the pages until the very end. I love that it's a regular length book, not a novella, so it's not a super quick read BUT the pages kept on turning. :) :) :) I highly recommend clicking the buy it now button for this book. Two thumbs up for Valkyrie Cursed by Rosie Wylor-Owen.
If you want an action packed, emotionally engaging story, then you MUST read this book! Valkyrie Cursed is a fresh take on the supernatural. It's engaging from the start and is a true page turner. I couldn't put it down! Rowen is a phenomenal female protagonist and relatable in so many ways. Its easy to feel a connection to her as she faces the unknown, learns to trust, and finds herself falling for someone she shouldn't. I am (im)patiently waiting for book 2, and can't wait to see where the story will go!
