Asking for Trouble
Asking for Trouble is a collection of poetry that explores living with a ragged heart, whilst still being brave enough to face the world with hope. Empowering and emotionally raw, these are poems that celebrate femininity and inner strength.

A few things describe this book for me:
- Things overlooked
- Finding confidence
- Taken for granted
This book addresses so many important things, despite being much shorter than most of the poetry books I read. Tori does an incredible job of combining the things I referenced above to create a poetry book that is very much relatable, particularly now.
Not only that, but the whole book has a soft, free-flowing vibe where the messages of the poems stay with you. One great example is “Twitter Litter”. Love the title & the idea that pity posting isn’t the right way (or healthy way) to get attention. Honesty & asking for help are better alternatives.
“Snap” & “Keys, Phone, Mask” are realistic poems about what it’s like to live in the pandemic. “Snap” addresses the work at home side of things while “Keys, Phone, Mask” looks at the routine we’ve all settled into of making sure we have what we need before we go out in public during the COVID pandemic.
I think my favorite poems would probably be “Shy Lies”, “Precipice”, & “Broken Records” because of how much I think they describe me.
The cover is positively incredible as well! I love the color scheme & artwork on the front! I also love the implication of the title! It makes me think: “Be bold, don’t be afraid to say or do things most people aren’t.” It fits with how Tori approaches the topics in the book within her poems.
In terms of her poetic style, Tori’s poems feel graceful in their language & execution. She uses images that, while relatable & current to others, feel personal to her. Reading this book, I got the sense that I was seeing the world through her eyes.
The mix of imagery, poetic execution, messages, & overall aesthetic really had me feeling this book on a personal level, which I enjoyed so much!
Overall, this is a fairly short read with some strong, solid poetry that isn’t just for show! If you’re looking for that beautiful balance between poetry you can get lost in & walking away with important life lessons (that may be overlooked or taken for granted), this is your book!

I picked up this book from the author herself at a local festival where there was live music outdoors as well as stall holders. She was on the stall next to mine. Cracking poems and she performed, too!
