Kısa Fransız İhtilali Tarihi

Rate this book

A concise history of the French Revolution - too concise to offer more than a very brief overview over some of the most prominent figures and events, but a decent resource for any in need of the very basics all the same.

The book is really fast paced. Author explains beautifully, how the objective of the revolution changed from 'Tennis Court declaration' in 1789 to the rise of Jacobins and then up to the fall of Directoire. The actual is history of French Revolution is not something to be exalted, politicians from different quarters, manipulated the the public opinion for private gains, how the pamphleteers twist the public opinion and urge them for insurrection. Author walks you through the turn of events but fails to explain you the intricacies that let them to it. From a patron's (of History) point of view, these list of event has no meaning without critical analysis based in which necessary conclusions could be drawn. A preface explaining the Voltairean thoughts and Doctrines of Rousseau would great help the readers to understand the mindset of middle class and other stakeholders of revolution.

Excellent explanations, and some I understood better than from other books. Difficult for me to keep remembering the cast of characters, as there were soooo many. After the royal family was hanged, I skimmed the rest of the book. Will try again someday.

A good, concise introduction to the French Revolution, though a little dated.

The French were crazy. Revolt, imprison and kill political enemies, imprison and kill political allies who are too moderate, repeat for 10 years until Napolean takes over. Classic example of how dictators arise from revolution. Illustrates that rare is the person who truly cares about more than their own power and status, rare is the person with strength and desire to enhance the greater good and to think and act reasonably and fairly. The parallels with today were unmistakable. The Jacobins! What a ghastly group of terrorists.

I’ve only rated this 3 stars because it’s a survey, but it’s a good survey of the French Revolution that helps a non-specialist prepare to take up the great histories of the Revolution by Burke, Carlyle, Lamartine, Taine, and others.

Obviously, this isn't a book you'd choose for light reading.

Having a strong history bent in me, but not knowing anything much about the French revolution, I appreciated this audiobook version that gave me a decent introduction to it. Mon dieu! What bloodiness!

The best of modernity came from France. Democracy, sense of equality, sense of haves and have nots and so on. This is a short description on that.
