A talisman that unmasks thoughts, desires, deepest secrets. The fate of kingdoms depends on mastering its power and protecting it...

The untroubled world of young Thomas Stablehand is changed forever when he stumbles upon an unusual stone. With the thoughts and intents of others laid bare to him, he eagerly indulges his curiosity. But seeing into other minds isn’t like Thomas expected. And troubles are only beginning.

Invaders attack the kingdom of Arvenon, and Thomas has nowhere to turn except to his friend Will Prentis, a gifted and ambitious leader who has risen rapidly in the ranks of the king’s army.

Will is fearless, and where he leads men follow. With the kingdom on the brink, Will leads a small band on a perilous quest to thwart the invaders. Fearing his secret will be exposed, and hoping to help prevent catastrophe, Thomas flees with them.

But dangerous enemies seek the stone for their own ends. As Will faces a relentless opponent whose true purpose remains hidden, Thomas must decide what price he's willing to pay to protect the stone and preserve the kingdom.

Allan Packer writes epic fantasy. The Ruptured Kingdom is his second published series, following The Stone of Knowing and the other novels of The Stone Cycle series.

Allan grew up surrounded by books and became an avid reader during his childhood. In his university years fantasy displaced science fiction as his favorite genre, thanks primarily to J. R. R. Tolkien. He later shared this love with his four children by reading The Lord of the Rings to them aloud - a three-month marathon he completed twice during their formative years.

Born in Australia, Allan has lived and worked on three continents, and spent one quarter of his working years abroad. Having worked as an IT professional throughout his career, he was first published as a technical author.

Today he lives with his wife in Adelaide, South Australia, at the heart of a growing and geographically distributed extended family.

Allan is currently working on the final instalment in his series The Ruptured Kingdom. For news and information about Allan's books, visit his website.

The Stone of Knowing is an epic fantasy of a grandiose world easily competing with the best out there. Even such as the incomparable Lord of the Rings set of Tolkien.
It starts simply enough with a young boy discovering and picking up a small stone. It ends with a war to end all wars and grand adventure inbetween to make you yearn for more and more and more.
The author took pains to develop the various characters fully. The world plotting is great and logically builds to a sensible and indeed epic adventure overall and numerous side adventures building up to the grand theme of an evil leader similar to Tolkien's Mordred.
The story flows naturally from one scene to the next, making it such an immersive reading experience to make reality simply disappear for this reader.
An absolute must get and hold onto.

I am sorry to say there isn't much to recommended this story. Negative family life, a thoughtless comment turns a young boy the main character knows into a malicious bully, finding a miraculous stone that changes a person(and not for the better), this is just the agonizing journey of the self centered main character. The title doesn't fit. I returned the BoxSet unfinished to the library unfinished.

I listened to the audio version of this book set. The performance was well done. I did enjoy the story. The ending was very satisfying which is a big plus for me. I think it was more than 3 stars, but a little less than 4.
