SHY ONES is a sweet look at friendship and the people (or sea creatures) who are shy. The story is about Maurice, the adorable flapjack octopus. Maurice is sometimes hard to spot, because he doesn't stand out in class (when the other children are raising their hands, he is hiding under the desk) or on the playground. However, when no one is watching, he's an amazing dancer.
Maurice is invited to dress-up party, and when his parent RSVP's yes (even though he doesn't want to go), he creates a colorful paper bag to wear. Once at the party, he meets with a friend who is shy like him (hiding under a similar paper bag)- Lucy, the box fish. The book concludes by saying the shy ones always know how to find each other.
What I loved: The illustrations here are so lovely. They capture the ocean atmosphere and the adorable creatures herein so well. Children will love trying to spot the hiding Maurice on each page. After you have read the book, you will notice that if you go back, you can also spot Lucy hiding throughout, and this adds to the fun of multiple reads. The text is simple, which works for a broad range of ages ad the pages can turn quickly, making this great for even young toddlers. Whether shy or outgoing, this book will capture children's attention with the cute creatures, bright colors, and simple text. This picture book speaks to the feeling of being different and making friends.
Final verdict: Perfect for fans of HELLO, MY NAME IS OCTICORN, SHY ONES is a sweet and lovely read that will capture children's imaginations. Young readers will love following Maurice in this endearing book about friendship and feeling different.
Please note that I received an ARC. All opinions are my own.
I really enjoyed this sweet story. I was able to read it on Epic.com, it doesn't seem to be available for purchase yet. This is a story about a shy and introverted little octopus. We learn that though he may not be front and center in class and on the playground, he has interests and passions if you get to know him. His mother accepts a party invitation on his behalf and he begrudgingly goes, only to find another shy fish friend! A match made in heaven! Though they are both quiet and not necessarily the same, they respect each other and enjoy each other's company. I think this is a great book for everyone. Introverts can relate to it, and extroverts can learn to pay a little closer attention to their introverted friends. This story also features beautiful illustrations with the "shy fish" hiding in each picture. It would be fun to reread with children to see if they can spot the shy fish! A fun, delightful read that I highly recommend!
The sweetest picture book with bright and colorful illustrations, I just love them! And the main topic of the story is so good - it explains shyness to kids. Let's hope the world would become a kinder place because of such books.
»»» A compra: Minha nossa!
»»» Sentimento final: Bastante bom.
I like Simona Ciraolo but I didn't like this one much. It just sort of felt like there wasn't much there there, like the story was too thin. The illustrations were cute and unique, but basically it's like this octopus is shy and comes off as kind of unfriendly and a grump, but he's just shy, but there's not a huge amount of movement in the narrative. My 3.5 year old who has historically been quite shy and connects well to stories about shyness seemed fairly indifferent.
Shy Ones is the story of an octopus called Maurice who is shy and likes to blend in to the background rather than be the centre of attention but one day he isn't invited to a party and he finds things turn our different than he planned.
This is a nice story and one that I think that some of the children found very relatable but the story is not the most interesting to read. The storyline itself is lovely and I think it's great that it bring some awareness to the shyness of some and shows that they still want to be accepted and find a friend even if it's more difficult but I found the story seemed to be lacking in detail and the story could have been better. Maybe I just didn't like the writing style but at times the story seemed quite basic.
The illustrations are beautiful with lots of pretty pastel colours and the underwater theme it kept the children's attention. They loved looking for Maurice in each page nearer the start of the story when he blended into the background. The ending of the story was lovely and I like that it showed that you're not alone and there's always someone else out there that may be just like you.
This is a nice idea for a story but I think it could have been improved with better writing. The pictures make for a beautiful book though and I think the topic is such an important one to highlight so shy children don't get forgotten and can find some friends like Maurice.
A colorful coral reef is the setting for this quirky picture book about shyness. Maurice, a flapjack octopus, is new to Fish School. He hides behind his mother as they arrive, under the desk in class, and among coral and sea plants everywhere else. But, at the Deep Blue Dance Hall he shows his stuff. At a birthday party which he begrudgingly attends, he meets another shy one: Lucy, the box fish. Beguiling jewel tone colors and gorgeous fishy scenes underwater showcase Ciraolo’s artistic story telling, with the end papers introducing the characters. A lovely, quiet book to contemplate, perhaps with a shy little one on your lap.
I was a huge fan of the author's first book: Hug me! and I am not disappointed by this next one. It's the story of a little octopus who's just plain shy and who has trouble adapting to life at school, in class or at recess. It's hard to participate or to make friends.
I like the themes that were dealt with in this book, the illustrations are cute and the text is often funny, but it's also so much more than that. I think a lot of kids will identitfy with the octopus and how hard it is to be yourself when you are shy and introverted.
This was the choice for Bethany, OK, June storywalk, as partnered with "Oceans of Possibilities" summer reading program. It's an absolutely adorable book, especially for those of us who like to remain on the sidelines, including those of us who appreciated Quiet:. Lovely colors, and a wonderful ending. My youngest son, now age 26. walked with me, and very much enjoyed the story amd art, too.
I enjoyed it so much I'm requesting a paper copy to bring home and read to myself. And of course I want more by the author-illustrator.
Probably inspired by youtube's bevy of shy octopuses, for example "Shy Octopus Hides Inside Its Own Tentacles | Nautilus Live." --- Now have read in paper. Which was even lovelier as I could pore over details.
A sweet picture book about a shy young Flapjack Octopus named Maurice, who is good at blending in but definitely not boring. Beautiful illustrations of underwater scenes with a hand-drawn quality that brings a tonne of personality to the book. The story itself is simple, with a positive message and a surprise at the end that makes for a fun reread. Ideal for a close reading rather than a class or storytime as there are lots of details (and an octopus) hiding amongst the coral. Best for reading ages 4+.
Een boek over een heel verlegen klein octopusje! Superzoet!
Het einde maakte me helemaal blij! Wat lief! 😍
Adorable.
A gentle, sweet story about a little octopus who is very shy but wants others to understand him and who he really is. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful and the story does a wonderful job explaining that everyone is different and just because someone may be a little quiet or introspective doesn't mean that they don't have so much they want to offer and contribute.
A little flapjack octopus is shy (encourage kids to find him hiding on each page) but is a good dancer. When his mom RSVP's to a fancy dress party invitation on his behalf, he is upset, but soon he finds another wallflower, Lucy the box fish, and they befriend each other. Could be a good book to talk about shyness.
A book about the shy ones. Flying Eye never disappoints in its beauty and style. I love the main character and how he's not all he appears to be (shy? maybe, but not when dancing!). He has depth beyond just being "a shy one." I especially love the scene where the mom commits him to the party and he protests by wearing a not so happy face mask lol! Great!
A sweet little book for the shy and/or introverted kids, showing them that they can seek out others in quiet corners and find their people if they put themselves out there just a little.
I like that it debunks some stereotypes about not being fun or friendly just because you are the type of person who gets overwhelmed in big groups or loud settings.
