Summertime on the Ranch

Rate this book
City meets country in this brand new novella from beloved, bestselling author Carolyn Brown.

This city girl is about to learn a thing or two about bad-boy cowboys.

Becca McKay has been in Nashville doing everything she can to land a country music contract, but when her grandmother, Greta, gets sick, Becca packs up her twelve-year-old SUV and heads back to Terral, Oklahoma to help take care of Greta. Once she arrives, she quickly gets hired at the O'Donnells' watermelon wine making business.

Dalton Wilson has been the foreman on the O'Donnells' ranch for a couple of years now. He's thirty years old and has a reputation for being a bad-boy cowboy, but deep in his heart, he is more than ready to settle down. It's love at first sight for Dalton, but convincing Becca that he is ready to hang up his bad boy spurs is quite another thing—until the night they both have too much watermelon wine and open their hearts…

Hi! I'm twenty five years old and movie star gorgeous. The camera added thirty plus years and a few wrinkles. Can't trust those cameras or mirrors either. Along with bathroom scales they are notorious liars! Honestly, I am the mother of three fantastic grown children who've made me laugh and given me more story ideas than I could ever write. My husband, Charles, is my strongest supporter and my best friend. He's even willing to eat fast food and help with the laundry while I finish one more chapter! Life is good and I am blessed!

Reading has been a passion since I was five years old and figured out those were words on book pages. As soon as my chubby little fingers found they could put words on a Big Chief tablet with a fat pencil, I was on my way. Writing joined reading in my list of passions. I will read anything from the back of the Cheerio's box to Faulkner and love every bit of it. In addition to reading I enjoy cooking, my family and the ocean. I love the Florida beaches. Listening to the ocean waves puts my writing brain into high gear.

I love writing romance because it's about emotions and relationships. Human nature hasn't changed a bit since Eve coveted the fruit in the Garden of Eden. Settings change. Plots change. Names change. Times change. But love is love and men and women have been falling in and out of it forever. Romance is about emotions: love, hate, anger, laughter... all of it. If I can make you laugh until your sides ache or grab a tissue then I've touched your emotions and accomplished what every writer sets out to do.

I got serious about writing when my third child was born and had her days and nights mixed up. I had to stay up all night anyway and it was very quiet so I invested in a spiral back notebook and sharpened a few pencils. The story that emerged has never sold but it's brought in enough rejection slips to put the Redwood Forest on the endangered list. In 1997 Kensington bought two books for their Precious Gems line. Two years and six books later the line died with only four of those books seeing publication. But by then Avalon had bought a book and another, and another. Ten years later the list has grown to thirty nine. Last year Sourcebooks bought the Lucky Series which is in the bookstores now. They've also bought The Honky Tonk Series which will debut with I LOVE THIS BAR in June and will be followed by HELL, YEAH, MY GIVE A DAMN'S BUSTED, and HONKY TONK CHRISTMAS.

Folks ask me where I get my ideas. Three kids, fifteen grandchildren, two great grandchildren. Note: I was a very young grandmother! Life is a zoo around here when they all come home. In one Sunday afternoon there's enough ideas to keep me writing for years and years. Seriously, ideas pop up at the craziest times. When one sinks its roots into my mind, I have no choice but to write the story. And while I'm writing the characters peek over my shoulder and make sure I'm telling it right and not exaggerating too much. Pesky little devils, they are!

I have a wonderful agent, Erin Niumata, who continues to work magic and sell my work. I'm very lucky to have her and my editors who continue to believe in me.

Happy reading!

Summertime on the Ranch, a standalone from the Spikes and Spurs series.
Becca followed her dreams of singing professionally to Nashville and now a decade later, she's resetting her life back home working at a winery and trying to deny the attraction to a good-timing cowboy. Dalton works on the ranch where the winery is located and fell for Becca when he first saw her, but it has been six months and she hasn't given him the time of day until his dog does a bit of matchmaking and gets him a chance with her.

I thoroughly enjoyed Summertime on the Ranch. It was loaded with Carolyn Brown’s earthy everyday folk humor and sweet with a pinch of spice cowboy romancing. Grab this up for a good time of laughter, music, and love in ranch country.

It was a nice change to read a novella, I haven’t read any other books in this series but that didn’t create an issue for this story. I loved Grammie Greta! She was funny and outspoken and guided the love story in the right direction.

Wish the book was longer

Carolyn Brown continues on fro Rye & Austin's story to give you insight into Dalton & Becca's story. Becca has gone to work for Austin on the watermelon farm. Dalton runs Eye's ranch across the road. He meets & is instantly attracted to Becca but she's not interested in him until they dance on Saturday night & he sits by her at Church on Sunday & has lunch at her Grannies house. Unfortunately, this book is just a snippet & we don't get much of their story.

Another wonderfully sweet read

Humor, chemistry, heat and great characters make this an enjoyable read. Becca has come to live with her grandma after giving up her dream of making it as a country singer, working is what she's focused on. The sexy cowboy from the ranch next door is wrecking havoc. Dalton's been known to have fun with the ladies but is he ready to settle down, can he prove it to Becca? Very fun quick read!

Cute story and easy to finish in an afternoon. It was nice to visit with some of the old characters from previous Terrel books, this one seemed to end abruptly...I would have loved a more 'full-on' novel than these short stories. The author is a really gifted writer and I do wish she'd revisit some of the places she based her stories in such as Cadillac, Terrel, and Burnt Boot.

Another front porch story in two rocking chairs

Mrs. Brown's stories are tales I envision hearing grandmothers, favorite aunts telling their grandchildren & favorite nieces. The ones that bring them to dream of the best. The characters share a bond that is so real you want to reach out & grab it. Summertime & watermelons - how can you go wrong!

I wanted to try out this author so I thought this novella would be a good intro. I was just bored. This was obviously a part of a larger plot and the intro to the characters was limited, and there wasn't a satisfying conclusion. I may try one of the authors full length books before I just give her work a pass.

Carolyn Brown’s SUMMERTIME ON THE RANCH is the Spikes And Spurs novella found in the reissued of LOVE DRUNK COWBOY. Lighthearted banter, heart-tugging emotion, and down-to-earth characters makes this sweet novella an enjoyable read!

Beautiful, sweet romance

Carolyn Brown is the romance whisperer. Her stories, just like this beautiful novella, always elicit the most heart felt love and connection for the characters. Loved it, just as I do all of her other books!!

Becca came to stay with her grandmother after she gets sick. She goes to work at the watermelon winery. Dalton is the foreman on the ranch and is smitten with Becca.

Dalton is ready to settle down and must get Becca to understand he is ready.

Another delight book from Carolyn Brown.

Sweet western romance. Angel's singing career was a bust so it was not a hardship to come home to care for Aunt Greta. Coming home led to her chance at true love. Laced with humor in Ms. Brown's unforgettable style, this tale is fun and uplifting.

Another warm fuzzy from Carolyn

To an old southern hemisphere curmudgeon like me, the Texan cowboy stereotype doesn't really slip down easily, but to the old romantic softy that I seem to be, the positive and emotional story is an easy swallow that puts a smile on my face.

Ok I am done with these books. The first couple of books I read from this author were cute stories, not very serious but a break from a crazy world. Now these are the same story over and over again and they keep getting shorter, So frankly I am done!!

Great book about trust and love.

I think the author really has a good handle on the ins and outs of young people falling in love, and all the UPS AND DOWNS TOO! I really enjoyed this book, and several other books by Carolyn Brown. I would highly recommend reading this book.

summertime

The book was okay but it just didn’t have a very good beginning or ending. I got lost when his dog was in the winery. But was more confused when the bull got loose. No lead in and less of a lead out.

Pretty Corny

This was written in, howdy ma'am I'm a cowboy style. There was little to recommend in this book. The upside of the story was that it was short so the pain of reading it was soon over. Don't bother.

Old cowboys, young love and watermelon wine

What a sweet story of Dalton and Becca. Makes me want to hitch a paper sail to my worries and float on down the river. Thank you Carolyn. A sweet story was just what I needed today.

Great romance

I have always loved this author's ability to make me feel like I could visit the towns she describes and actually meet the characters in her stories. I have loved every book of hers so far. Never disappointed.

Believe!

Becca has decided to return to her hometown after trying for ten years to"make IT" in Nashville. Dalton is an ex bull rider and rodeo cowboy. The attraction is there, but can they believe on each other? This is a short but fun story.

Boring book. Only 79 pages. One story of 2 people falling in love, but that's it. They fall in love in the beginning of the book and that's it. Very disappointed. Have read books by Carolyn Brown before.

Second time

I liked the characters and that it was not all tied up in drama, some times it seems like an author can not have a good time with out a bad time to balance out. All in all a good read.

This was in the back of Love Drunk Cowboy so it was a little hard to skip from the beginning to like 5 years later. But it was a great show of Brown’s writing growth from the first. The 3rd person limited perspective wasn’t jumping around like LDC.
