Not monsters, bloodcurses, or demons… maybe angels.
But what will they do when their own sins are used against them?
Dr. Levy is on the expedition of a lifetime. He thinks they’re studying ancient ruins. He couldn’t be more wrong.
Lieutenant Ramirez is leading his squad through a doorway. To a place the brass won’t name. To a place he doesn't believe in.
Ramirez swore an oath to protect the translators and his men. But how can he save them from themselves? How can he save them from a fate worse than death?
If you like your horror set to slow burn and thought the original Inferno was light on suspense, then you’re in the right place.
Samuel Fleming is a Science Fiction and Fantasy author. He grew up in Maryland, spending most of his time swimming and writing. The thing about swimming is that it gives you a lot of time to daydream, so the two hobbies complemented each other well. Idle dray dreams turned into stories, some of which stuck with him for years. These days he swims a little less and writes a lot more. He loves a good story no matter the medium: Books, TV, video games, comics, tabletop RPG’s, or podcasts–most of which he attempts to share with his wife and three kids, and occasionally on his blog.
So I had high hopes for this book. Nothing better than an underground adventure story. Except when I started reading this I noticed the formatting seemed to be off? I was willing to overlook that if the story was good ... But I was about a third of the way through the book and nothing was actually going on! And even once the team get into the cave and starts walking (and yes its like they just walk everywhere with ease - no ropes or crampons or any climbing gear) there really is nothing exciting going on. Which is very weird and disappointing.
I also could not get into the characters either.. They are like just names? No personality. No real idea who they are. This one is a soldier and this one is a translator. A translator who doesn't really translate anything. There are no mysteries. No puzzles. No heart pounding in fear because of some scary sound in the dark. Just them walking across these different pits where people suffer. No suspense. In fact by the end of the book I was confused if anything had been accomplished!
The best thing about this book is the cover.
I think the author has a good idea here but it needs to be reworked? Writing is an art and it takes practice and skill. And the story started way too early.
You don't need to have read the original to follow the story or enjoy the book. If you have read you will notice the similarities but recognize this is its own book in its own right.
Well this was a weird one. I read it mostly out of curiosity, as in "how would the author pull this one off?" I was left entertained but mostly disappointed.
