November 20, 2023Aaaaah. At last, another instalment in the Blessings series, which is basically a massive soap opera set in Henry Adams and featuring descendants of Ms Bev's July dynasty. Don't even think about starting here, there's ten books worth of characters, backstory, plot, and shenanigans you need to know. (I read all ten in a fortnight's massive lockdown binge, which I would recommend as the best way to do it, minus the global pandemic part.)
This one is fairly low conflict--we've got Mal and Bernadine finally getting married, and Paula at last getting a romance of her own, plus the working out of Preston's birth family, all of which has been fully conflicted out in previous books. So this almost felt like a book length 'last few chapters' in which things are coming right all round. This is absolutely perfect for immersed readers, and as noted, you wouldn't want to come in cold anyway. I have been reading this in snatched moments over a weekend in which my entire house broke, and it has been a total sanity saver.
I wish also to note that while it is a totally feelgood Christmas book with good people being good to one another, Ms Bev has just now and then slipped in a line of such startling brutality I actually said, "Woah" out loud. The edge is always there: it's what makes her work such a joy.

Where has this series been all my life? We are all aware of a quote that says, “Never judge a book by it’s cover.” However, I do that all the time! I am a sucker for a beautiful Christmas cover Therefore, naturally I gravitated towards this book. Not only was the cover to this book gorgeous, but the story within the pages were also just as beautiful. This is a heart-warming story about a small community in Kansas. Honestly, it read like a Hallmark Christmas movie! It was just what I wanted to read for this season. I liked the characters and their stories. I will be picking up the other books in this series next year

I received a free copy of, A Christmas to Remember, by Beverly Jenkins, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This is book 11 in the Blessings Books series. Bernadine Brown bought a town, not many people can say that. Everything is not well in Henry Adams, Bernadine's town. Her relationship with Malachi is up and down, on or off, but now they are engaged and planning a church wedding. There is a lot going on in this little town at Christmas, An enjoyable festive read.

A Christmas to Remember was such a delightful atmospheric story, that transports you straight into the magical town of Henry Adams. This is my first Beverly Jenkins book, and I was not disappointed. If you're like me, you're a mood reader that enjoys reading with the seasons. As we head into the holiday season, I like to pick up a holiday romance, and this one hit the mark! Imagine being able to BUY a town on eBay?! That would be wild. This is a book in a series, but I read it on its own and didn't feel lost, however, I feel like you would appreciate the relationships more if you read the series. A book full of personal growth, love, and connection, it really does hit the mark for the perfect holiday reading experience, that you'll want to read cuddled up next to a fire.

A Christmas to Remember is a wonderful and uplifting holiday story.

From the very beginning of the story, I felt like I was easily welcomed into a small town with a cast of truly charming characters, while getting to read multiple POV from different age groups and perspectives. I’ve honestly never read a story with age gaps in POV, and it was such a unique in interesting way to tell a story.
I also really appreciated the mental health representation in this story surrounding trauma and grief.

I've enjoyed all the Beverly Jenkins books I've read. I requested this one not realizing it was a #11. There seems like the previous books had a lot of drama and heartache. We get recaps and I wasn't lost but I'm sure it would be better to read in order.
This one has a wedding, a new romance and second chance. This small town is so close knit with such a great community and support. Though they have their struggles as well.
Love the mental health rep that is represented. Mental health has such a stigma and there is trauma and grief from so many direct and indirect sources. Some of it is from verbal and mental abuse and some is diagnosed or undiagnosed conditions. I think we are all on the mental health spectrum. That isn’t to diminish those that struggle. But as I watch my sister click on the lock mechanism for the tenth time, not fully happy that it's locked and notice that most of my moms side does that, I wonder.
All of us need someone to talk to and to process all our thoughts and feelings. Especially someone who isn’t related to us but has our best interest in mind. So having their pastor be their sounding board and counselor is a great option. That is a position that sometimes gets overlooked but that is in most of their training to help keep their community healthy and seeking help.

This series has been a favorite. There is something special about Henry Adams, it makes me want to move there, set up a house and fill it with foster kids. With the town being so small, things are done different, focus on the towns people heritage that is now lore of the town and how they celebrate. The kids, a lot of them hard asses when they arrived, are settled, good adults around them giving them the lead to be kids, but also letting them know they are loved and supported. You could see it when the golden child came to visit and how the kids reacted. Also, with 2 kids seeking out counseling for an issue they have.
Bernadine being the guiding force, is facing lots of changes in her life and making them fit to how she wants, not what the norm is, which is right for her. I even like how she realizes that things need to change in town if it is to thrive. I would love to see the town grow, to see how these kids end up as adults, to see how things are with Reverend Paula and her new beau.

I just loved this 11th in the author's Blessings series! But a word of warning: do not start with the books here. Go back to the beginning to be introduced slowly to the huge number of characters, and to see their development.
I struggled a bit in the beginning to remember who all of the characters were, as it had been 3 1/2 years since I read the 10th entry in the series. But I soon settled in with the book, and loved where this took us. Many of the major characters are featured. We finally get Bernadine and Mal's wedding. Many of the original foster children are making plans for college. Even Riley and Cletus (the hog) make a brief appearance.
I truly hope there are going to be more in the series!

I enjoyed this story. It wasn't very Christmassy, but that's okay. It was kind of a look in on the people of Henry Adams. The main love story was mature adults finding love again later in life. But I could tell I jumped in to an established series. This small town was established and inhabited by the Julys. I first met the Julys in Wild Sweet Love a really great Western HR I loved. I will definitely have to go back to the beginning of the Blessings series to get everyone's backstory. Happy reading!

When I started reading this book, I thought it was overwhelming. Then I stopped, just reading the book and thinking about what I was reading. Henry Adams is a small town, and the people are busy, and when I settled in, yes, I felt like the town welcomed me and I settled in and became a part of their journey.
There is so much to Henry Adams, they created their town, by working together, the town has many blessings, and there is always room for one more.
They don't take things for granted, they navigate through life, they are celebrating Christmas, and always thinking and caring about the people that live there, I started this review by being overwhelmed but soon realized, this book was meant for me to read, to help me see, how I needed to bring these things back into my life. I used to be like the people who live here, but I was on autopilot, just going through the motions of living, but this book, has changed me, and has lit the spark in me to live life again and not just go through the motions.
It is an amazing town, with amazing people. I received an ARC from William Morrow Paperbacks through NetGalley. Yes, this book has been a blessing to me.

I have been waiting patiently for this story for a while and I must admit that it definitely didn't disappoint!!!
It has everything that I have come to absolutely love about The Blessing Series. I loved that new characters have been added, sad that a character that I was looking forward to knowing more about decided to leave Henry Adams without really giving it a real chance. I'm hoping that we get more stories about this wonderful town, especially the children like Preston and Amari. Hopefully we'll see Eli James come home and Crystal finally step into her destiny. I am so hopeful that we get to know more about little gems dropped by gentleman Pastor Paula visited; especially regarding our beloved Tamar July!!!

My thoughts: 📖 Page 181 of 281 Chapter 11 - This book is speeding, but not much is happening. I wish they hurry up with the loose ends since it seems like they might be wrapping up the series; instead, they are creating new ones.
I'm not sure if there will be more books from Henry Adams, but I'm good either way; I'll read them. We can't agree on the ages of the children or how many years it's been overall as well as between books, but these are good stories. This book didn't have much Christmas in it other than half being set during the season.
Recommend to others: Sure, this was fun.

This reader loves this author and wanted so much to like this book; however, the flaws were too great to give it a high rating. One big flaw is the poor editing. There are typographical errors and confusing dialog. This reader was trying to figure out which character was speaking and at least twice just gave up. Next, it is recommended that readers not to start with this book as the first exposure to the Blessings series. The story is written such that it assumes that you know a lot of the background of the characters and setting and it also spends too much time repeating some of the backstories, which drags down the book. In most cases, the backstory doesn't matter very much. Another flaw is that there are far too many characters who contribute little or nothing to the story. There are several subplots that don't have enough backstory for the reader to grasp the deep impact. There is a subplot of "puppy love" that this reader thinks could have made a decent YA novel/novella if it had been fleshed out. That subplot overtook the real story which this reader took to be the connecting of two characters from the book. Finally, this reader was very disappointed that this so-called "Christmas" story had too little Christmas in it. For example, the reader expected "Christmas" to be connected strongly with the climax of the story leading to a (hopefully) HEA. The "Christmas" was just the time of year and it could have been any season of the year.
This reader plans to go back to book 1 of the series and give it another try. However, this book isn't recommended for someone looking for a nice "Christmas" read.

Beverly Jenkins is a gifted storyteller and I’ve enjoyed her contemporary and historical novels. I realized quickly as I started A Christmas to Remember that this is very much part of a series. I read it as a stand alone but clearly there is much history in the community and ongoing relationships both good and bad. The setting is a town called Henry Adams, Kansas. It is a town originally founded by freed slaves. Bernadine bought the town when she got a large divorce settlement and is trying to revitalize it. The focus in this story is on Bernadine as she is planning her wedding to Mal and the arrival of Thornton Webb, a chef and successful restaurant owner, who is going to head the new restaurant in town. He may be the answer to Reverend Paula Grant’s prayers as a potential partner. There are other happenings too with many of who I assume are the town regulars. This is an engaging story but I probably would have enjoyed it more had I read previous books in the series. (Although there is a bit of recapping so a new reader isn’t lost.) A Christmas to Remember by Beverly Jenkins was a mature, cozy, made-for-TV holiday story. The story takes place in the historical town of Henry Adams, which is still growing and developing, and it’s filled with a close knit, loving community that really sets the tone for the story.
Even though this is book 11 in the series, this was my first Beverly Jenkins book and I didn’t feel lost at all. It was a slow pace easy, comforting read and overall I enjoyed it. Perfect if you’re in the mood for something warm for the holidays

I think Beverly got something else on deck because I feel as something is missing or maybe I just expected more. This one touched on so many subjects and added new characters. I’m sure something new is brewing in Henry Adams and I can’t wait!

Perfect Beverly Jenkins a little romance a bit of history/culture and a great story and characters with strong development and relationships. I haven’t read the rest of the series so I can’t speak to any comparisons but that said I never felt lost or like I was missing something.

I’d been wanting to read Ms. Jenkins’s work for quite a while so I jumped at the opportunity to read A Christmas to Remember. I didn’t realize it was part of a series but not having read the earlier books didn’t affect my enjoyment one bit as Ms. Jenkins made sure to provide enough backstory to have me fully invested in the town of Henry Adams and all its inhabitants. So much so that I’m eager to dive into the earlier books so I can fully grasp everyone’s story.
I appreciated getting Bernadine and Mal’s wedding story as well as seeing the beginning of Pastor Paula and Thorn’s. The other threads concerning Preston, his family, and Leah and Amari just added to the charm. All the characters are so warm and engaging - I feel as though they’re friends. And the history of the town and its founding families - everything combined to make me completely enamored with all things about the Blessings series.

I love Beverly Jenkins Blessing series. It really makes me want to live in Henry Adams living the simple life. I feel so connected to the people and always hate when the story ends. This is book #11 but there are others I can’t find but will keep looking.

What a joy it is to return to Henry Adams and dive back into the lives and lives of familiar faces, and some new ones. This was a sweet holiday read that would appeal to the Hallmark holiday crowd. My only complaint was that the ending felt a bit rushed but overall it was a good read. I can’t wait for the next Henry Adams installment.

The small historical town of Henry Adams has a long history and is still being developed and improving. While reading I could picture the town’s people moving about this well-developed close-knit village. Henry Adams is a respectful place of love, new beginnings, acceptance, and healing. It truly shows the power of community as the town’s people get together for holiday events and festive gatherings.
I like to make notes of characters’ names and minor details about them when I am reading a book. This book had so many characters that I gave up writing the names down once I got half-way on a second sheet in my notebook. The story and the lives of those in the small town of Henry Adams are simple and there is no drama whatsoever, so this was a quick and easy read. From my understanding the book is part of a series, however this is the only book that I have read from the series.
I enjoyed each of the charming characters. It was inspiring to see examples of strong and capable women within the town. I like the variety of the age range of the characters, from high school age to the town’s matriarch Tamar July and patriarch Bing Shepard. The various storylines readers will follow Bernadine Brown and her relationship with diner owner Malachi “Mal” July as they prepare for their upcoming nuptials. Young Preston Mays Payne is one of the town’s adopted youths, trying to understand why his girlfriend Leah Clark made the decision to end their relationship before they departed for college. And then there is Reverend Paula Grant, readers get to see the courtship and new love develop with new resident Chef Thornton Webb.
This book is unbelievably too good to be true and, though not particularly realistic, it is a comforting, sweet read that offers nearly no drama. There were humorous conversations from the nosey meddling town’s folk. I liked that the town’s people were loving and caring, and the author brought to light so many adoptions and caring couples opening their homes and lives. I noted examples of the characters working on their relationships being respectfully vocal, and I liked that the characters were not afraid to communicate their fears. I also like that the author made efforts to include how counseling can be used to work through individual and relationship problems.
This is a delightful read for readers seeking a happy conclusion for all.

A Christmas to Remember was a slower read for me than expected and took longer to finish than most holiday novellas I typically enjoy. The story very much gives stereotypical "Hallmark Christmas Movie" vibes (think cozy, familiar, and at sometimes predictable). While that can be comforting to some readers, it didn't fully hold my attention throughout.
That said, as a social worker, the strongest and most meaningful storyline in this book was the story of Preston, Amari, Devon, and the other foster children in the town of Henry Adams. Beverly Jenkins does a beautiful job illustrating what it looks like to surround children, especially those who have experienced loss and instability, with consistent community love and support. The children openly acknowledge the supportive care they are given from their adoptive families throughout their individual storylines. They were all able to be vulnerable with the past trauma they endured, their feelings about not being "wanted" by their bio families, and expressing what type of support they needed which made these moments feel sincere and impactful.
Unfortunately, my reading experience was disrupted by what appeared to be numerous grammatical errors, misspellings, and misused words. I am not sure what happened during the editing process for this book but I was honestly astonished with how many errors I came across during my reading. It was distracting and pulled me out of the story as I had to take time to re-read the sentence to make sure it was not me making the mistake. I also wished there had been more development and fuller explanations of certain themes introduced early on, particularly within the hook of the book.
The ending, in particular, felt abrupt and unresolved, almost as if the story stopped rather than concluded. I was left genuinely wondering if the book had been completed, as several threads and character storylines didn't feel fully wrapped up.
Overall, I was looking for a cute, festive Christmas read for the holiday season, and this book proved basic satisfaction in that regard. While it didn't fully meet my expectations, it may still appeal to readers who enjoy predictable holiday stories centered on family, community, and seasonal warmth.

Returning to Henry Adams at any time of the year is one of life’s pleasures. Returning at Christmas time, especially with so much happening in this town right now, is the icing on top of the Christmas cake for me…or the star on the Christmas tree. A Christmas to Remember brings back so many memories of the journies these residents have been on for a long time and adds a few new characters and situations where we get to catch up but see ahead somewhat to more possibilities coming to the town of Henry Adams.
I had an absolute blast with A Christmas to Remember. There are romances to get caught up on, ones that are almost perfect until questions arise. There are lives to cherish even as those people go through some difficult changes themselves. There are new residents who are still finding their way in this compassionate town. And there is that special magic of the Christmas season combined with Beverly Jenkins’ amazing way of turning a phrase and finding the just right word to have the reader transported into this world. A classic wordsmith and master storyteller – that’s my opinion of Ms. Bev’s way with words. She could write a grocery list, and I’d devour it. *smiles in bookdragon mode*
If you can only add a few new Christmas Romances this year, please consider adding A Christmas to Remember. I doubt you’d be disappointed and perhaps grateful that you’ve been introduced to a wonderful town and a compassionate community.
