After reincarnating as the villainess of an otome game, Katarina Claes successfully staved off all the Catastrophic Bad Ends the game held in store for her. But instead of a peaceful life working at the Magical Ministry with her friends, she discovered that the original game had a sequel! Between the Dark Magic she’s acquired and possible game events she’s gotten wrapped up in, she may already be on the way to even worse fates than before! Now, she gets up to her usual, charming-yet-airheaded antics in the search for a kidnapped girl. Together with friends and colleagues from the Ministry, Katarina investigates a human trafficking ring in a seaside town. Naturally, this daughter of a duke and fiancée of a prince goes undercover as…a shockingly capable waitress?! Doom is always just around the corner in the ninth volume of the adventures of this not-so-villainous villainess!
While this is still better than the two volumes strictly set at the Magical Ministry, it's also nowhere near as good as volume 8. I love that Sora and Maria get more page time here, and the extra insight into Sora's past is good, as is the character of Arneau. But this just didn't have the delight of earlier books in the series. Hopefully it will be back on track in volume 10.
kim dokja of omniscient reader's viewpoint 🤝 katarina claes of my next life as a villainness
questioning why their friends seem increasingly inclined to trap them in a little box for the rest of their lives. it's not like they go around dying hurling themselves into dangerous situations at every given chance really? life just comes for you fast when you're the protaganist!
Following the trail of a kidnapping case, Kataria, Maria, and Sora go to a seaside town to . . . work in a restaurant? Although technically undercover agents, Katarina has made it a goal to improve the restaurant itself. After all, she's got experience from her previous life working as a waitress, so how hard could it be?
This is another mixed bag of a volume. On the plus side, it massively reduces the cast (even if Katarina is going to charm her way into someone else's good graces by the end). So there's a lot more room for Maria and Sora. And I also like that the new person Katarina meets is not someone who falls in love with her, but merely sees her as a friend, and isn't going to join the rest of her group.
On the minus side, this whole book is basically just here to wrap up the kidnapping tidbit that got dropped in a previous volume. There's very little progress on the overall plot. It still feels like the series has no idea what to do with itself, since it's determined not to commit to any one love interest, and there isn't enough of a bigger picture with the dark magic yet.
Also, I need more Pochi. Cute dark magic doggie feels like he's forgotten for the majority of the book.
Overall if you're still following the series, this is okay. It tends to feel like treading water still, but it's mostly decent. I rate this book Recommended.
Sora's POV are my absolute favorite parts! I enjoyed this one because we see the seaside life and culture of Sorcié harbors. The kidnapping children thing seemed to have a quick resolution, and likewise Arneau 's predicament felt a bit sudden too. Overall, I'm glad to see some improvement and maturity with Katarina. Maria also has grown as a character. However the noble friends in the ending talking about how imprisoning her to keep her safe is a red flag doom flag, like how does our homegirl not see that. Run to my boy Sora, he'll protect you (this is my wishful thinking of course in hopes that Katarina chooses our blue haired boy).
So much kidnapping. Everything in this series is based on coincidences and kidnapping. I love the characters and Maria and Katarina get some nice shipping, so it was boosted from a 2 star to a 3 star.
I am starting to think nothing will ever beat the first two novels.
I wasn't expecting to like this volume as much as I did! The past few have been sort of going nowhere without much by way of plot or character development, and while that wasn't enough to make me lose interest, I really missed the aspects that made me fall in love with the series in the first place.
I think vol 9 did itself a service by getting us out of the ministry setting and putting Katarina in situations she thrives in— interacting with people and doing her best to succeed at earnest tasks (in this case waitressing). Sora and Maria also got a lot of chances to shine here too, which made me super happy as they're both faves that I felt had been underused. Even though this was basically just tying up the kidnapping thread from the last volume, I enjoyed the self contained plot of Katarina at her new job and her eventual friendship with Arneau.
Side note I have more to say about Sora, because he was the stand out of this volume imo. In previous volumes it was like he was being neglected by the author... Like even though he arguably spends the most time with Katarina out of everyone in the cast, all he really did was scold her and act coldly (which was weirdly out of character to me seeing how much they bonded when they first met). But this book kind of shines light on that when we learn he feels like he should have nothing to do with her because of his upbringing. I really love narratives that focus on how people can change each other for the better, and Sora realizing how deeply Katarina has helped him evolve into a self he can feel proud of felt authentic and sweet. The setup and pay off for this is well done. We get a glimpse of it through his burgeoning friendship with Maria, and then Arneau is introduced as an effective parallel. Sora's interactions with Katarina also felt so...subtly romantic, in a way that isn't usually afforded because of the sheer number of suitors she has. Like how she began to realize how much he kept to himself, and how people in the town started to ship them lmao.
This line especially made me stop because of how much I liked it.
I felt as if she had clutched my heart with her bare hands, and I couldn't speak anymore
Out of all the characters I never expected Sora to get the best development. I'd love if this meant he was in the running to eventually confess to her, but I know how this series is so I'm not holding my breath lmao.
Besides all of that, I also liked seeing Sora and Maria interact and Katarina making a new friend in Arneau. As much as I love Katarina's harem, I want to see more relationships like Sora and Arneau's where the characters get to exist outside of their relationship to the heroine.
Yep, i sure did run through another volume of this. and I can't get enough of it.
This time around Katarina is off undercover working as a waitress trying to overhear info about the location of a missing noble lady along with Sora and Maria. Along the way shenanigans happen as they always do. That's really the TLDR version of this volume.
I wouldn't say there's a LOT of things that happen in this one. the actual "Saving the people" only really happens in the last 25% of the novel while the rest of it is her, Sora, and Maria pal'ing around and working at the cafe. Something i can't say i disliked. once again though, if you're looking for a series where actual STUFF happens the majority of the time, well, its' volume 9. if you don't know this by now about this series, i can't help you.
Something I will say i've noticed as this series progresses, is that because she's out of school and the series is mainly focusing her working at the Ministry of magic, for a LARGE chunk of the story, the original cast isn't around. The only characters she consistently interacts with are Maria and Sora. and Sora isn't an original. He's from season two. That being said, they seem to be heavily implying that this might end up being a sapphic romance between Katarina and Maria. i'm not certain of this yet, but they have been upping their hints about this, not least of which being that she hangs out with her the most out of any of the characters. and honestly, even though i'm not USUALLY a fan of those kind of romances, the writing in this series is done so well and the character interactions between Maria and Katarina are SO genuine that i actually find the two of them kind of adorable and wouldn't mind them as a pairing. But, if that actually happens remains to be seen.
With this volume, the actual resolution of the story is.... fine? if not a little lackluster on Katarina's part. without too many spoilers i'll say that she wasn't exactly the pinnacle of "resolving the issue" like she was in the previous volumes.
All in all, i had fun with this volume and definitely want to see where it's going and move onto volume 10. was 9 the best volume? no. absolutely not. but it was cute and i liked it for what it was. Katarina being dorky, only this time being a waitress and finding a home for a kitten all while looking for a missing kidnapped noble lady.
Amazing, as always! I am ALWAYS looking for more Sora cuteness.... and and love seeing Katarina doing things she's actually good at-- aka talking with people and making them happy-- in more of a work capacity! Yes, she's still our lovable Bakarina, but when in the right situation, she's competent too! She's perfect for an undercover team as long as she doesn't have to be the one sleuthing! I appreciate the use of the magic system in new an innovative ways, and am excited to see what Yamaguchi comes up with for extending fire, earth, and water magic! One of my favorite things is seeing how technology grows differently when magic is a fact of life, and (mild spoiler) I love that this book is fleshing out the world-building more. We're getting to see more than just what would be in the video game, and that's fascinating to think of what that means for the initial premise. Although it may just be that FL3 takes place overseas!
I think this is the first volume where Katarina isn't the one who saves the day. That credit goes to Maria, Sora, Cezar and Arneau. Turns out Sora and his childhood friend Arneau were born in Ethenell. Anyway, continuing from the last novel, Katarina, Sora and Maria are sent to Ocean Harbor undercover to find a kidnapped noble girl. They pose as temp restaurant staff where Katarina and Maria thrive as waitress and chef respectively. Katarina meets Arneau, who knows Sora. The latter wants to reconnect but Arneau is still involved in illegal activities and warns him to stay away. Turns out Arneau is involved in the kidnapping business. Katarina and Sora end up getting captured too. Maria and Cezar go to their rescue. The kidnapped children are saved, Arneau is given a pardon and goes back to Ethenell with Cezar.

“He awkwardly scratched the back of his head, whispering, “This is so out of character for me, but...” and then went on to say, “What I’m going to tell you is secondhand. It was that nosy girl you know about who first told it to me. But, right now, we’re both here, aren’t we? Our worlds aren’t different. We live in the same world.”
This series never fails to entertain me. Lighthearted and fun while still feeling like an adventure with it's unique brand of humor mixed in. Can't wait for the next volume!
The previous volume was very good for Katarina and Maria, but I really enjoyed this volume because we have more Maria-Katarina time and she’s falling more and more for Katarina! Ahh my yuri loving heart is overjoyed ~
This is my favourite book, because I love how Katarina gets to be more normal and comfortable as a waitress. As a noble lady she rarely gets to be herself and always gets shouted at for being weird.
We get a neat seaside adventure with a side of child trafficking this time around, and Katarina continues to be a poly queen. Continues to be a fun light read.
