The Lies that Save Us was an okay read. It was full of action and lots of twists and turns but there were also inconsistencies and situations that just didn't ring true. I'm not sure, it just seemed a bit false at times. Cayman and Alexa were both hot and fiesty, but there was not enough about them to make me love them as characters, I didn't find myself really caring what happened to them. C'mon though Cayman; the name is enough by itself! I do like a good mystery and The Lies that Save Us certainly kept me guessing until the end even if a few of the twists did seem a bit....convenient! So in conclusion The Lies that Save Us was an okay read. Alright, okay, I enjoyed it! It kept me hooked the whole way through, it was very easy to read and it entertained me from start to finish. Despite the fact I am ignoring the cliffhanger ending, should I see another book by the author I could perhaps find myself picking it up one day.
I stumbled upon this book when I was given a copy of the 2nd book Solitary Tears for an honest review. I downloaded The Lies that Save Us so I would know what was going on in the series. I was happy I did. I enjoyed this book. Going into it I wasn't sure what to expect. There was mystery, action, gun fights, a little romance. What else can you ask for? Alexa lost her dad and her fiance over a year ago. Her fiance betrayed her, and she was left alone. She moves to a small town opens a diner and tries to keep to herself. She meets an older gentleman named Keith who becomes somewhat of a surrogate father figure to her. Then along comes "Ham and Eggs" AKA Cayman. He keeps trying to get her attention and asks her out- she always refuses. Alexa has built a wall around her heart- she doesn't want to fall in love again but there is something about Caymen. Alexa starts seeing her dead father and starts to get freak out. She knows it is him but he is dead- she watched the casket go in the ground. Cayman finally wears her down and she agrees to go out with him. During their outing she sees her dad again. Cayman believes her but doesn't understand it. Little does Alexa know Cayman worked with her dad in the FBI. Her dad asked Cayman to look after her. Someone tries to break into Alexa's house Cayman chases them off. The two of them decide to go on a road trip to go back to her father's house in Arizona. On the way someone tries to run them off the road, they get shot and shot at. Alexa's instincts kick in and she has doubts about Cayman, something just doesn't add up. She ends up finding out he worked with her dad and her dad tells her in a message he recorded before her death that Cayman is to be trusted and to stick with him that he is a good guy. I enjoyed the mystery and the action and suspense of what was going to happen next. I don't want to give the ending away but I was surprised at what happened.
I got this book as a free download and I can say with all honestly that had I had to pay for it I would still have enjoyed it as much as I did :) If you've read any of my other reviews you will know that I love reading authors who are new to me and who have the ability to turn out a good book that not only as a story line that had me not wanting to put my kindle down, but also produced a book that was not riddled with typographical/grammatical/other errors that are guaranteed to put my teeth on edge!
JL Redington has written what is basically a thriller: drugs mob, bent FBI agents, dead father (who the female lead character keeps "seeing"), shoot outs, the lot. But it is also a love story with a hunky male lead character who has an aura of keeping something about himself hidden.
I honestly don't want to give too much away of the story but you do get a HEA that is just so sweet and just when you think it's the end of the story you get a cliffhanger for the next book in the series.
Very amateurish writing. Made me think grade school project. The characters didn't have any depth or believability to them while the plot seemed contrived and forced. I was really looking forward to this story after reading the preview, but it was a big let down. Too many scenes that didn't ring true and the author didn't do enough research on the background matter she was using. IE; FBI protocol and procedures. I'm being overly generous giving it 3 stars, but it is the holiday season, after all.
I really enjoyed this book. It had romance, mystery, suspense and a cliff hanger at the end. That makes for a great book. This story was about Alexa and Cayman. They meet sometime after Alexa's ex killed her father. Little does she know Cayman has been sent to protect her at all costs. As the mystery unfolds their love for each other grows. I know you will find this book as enjoyable as I did and it is a good read
This book was full of slow build romance and action. Mysterious Cayman appears in Alexa's life out of no where. The chemistry between these two was palpable from the start. With secrets and desire present, Alexa and Cayman embark on a mystery left behind when her father died. The author did a masterful job of blending a slow build romance with action and suspense. This book kept me guessing until the end.
Secrets, lies surrounded Alexa's life from the time she was born. She never knew her father secret life as an agent. When she met Cayman more lies and secrecy threatened their growing love. Danger and violence was added to the mix and we have a great story to follow. It kept my interest from beginning to end. One thing I missed though. Nothing was said about Max apparent death nor what happened to James. Somehow, the story seemed incomplete.
The Lies That Save Us (The Broken Heart #1) by J.L. Redington This was an interesting story line, with likeable characters, but this book could have been so much better. I never felt engaged with the story, there were too many jarring inconsistencies. There were gaps in the story line. Things that for me did not make sense in the story line even when I finished reading the whole story. For me this was an OK kind of book. 2 stars.

I couldn't get past the first few pages ...maybe the dialogue struck me wrong ... but I am upset by the way in which women are portrayed as letting a male dominate them. Now in all fairness to the author, she has written a negative response from Alexander but at that point I saw the character Cayman as a stalker, and I just did not want to continue. I am willing to read another in this series to check my reaction, but for now I will stick with 1-star.
After suffering the loss of her father at the hands of her ex-husband, Alexa moves to the quiet small town of Startup, Washington, where she purchases a diner and tries to put the past behind her. But when a handsome mysterious stranger named Cayman walks into Alexa's life, she is forced to confront the ghosts and mysteries from the past, as danger and romance lurks around the corner.
The Lies That Save Us is an intriguing romantic suspense novel that easily captivates the reader's attention with it's exciting mixture of mystery, suspense, and romance. As the reader follows Alexa and Cayman's journey to unravel her father's mysterious past, they are kept on their toes guessing as riveting twist and turns unfold involving secrets, deception, and danger. And if that isn't enough, the romantic chemistry between Alexa and Cayman slowly builds along the way. I loved the mixture of romance and intrigue, it kept the story interesting, fast-paced, and exciting to follow, even though the reader is left wanting more from the cliffhanger ending.
Alexa and Cayman are likable and easy to relate to. As their story unfolds they come to life, and easily draw the reader in with their engaging dialogue and interactions. Both are strong characters that you just can't help but like, and their chemistry is what makes romance novels wonderful to read.
The Lies That Save Us has everything a romantic suspense fan could ask for. It is an entertaining and enjoyable story that will keep you captivated, wanting more, and looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

The Lies That Save Us is the first JL Redington book that I have read, and now I am a fan. This was a great read. The novel keeps you guessing from beginning to end, Redington gives nothing away and the surprises keep coming. In The Lies That Save Us, Redington brings us a ton of action and conspiracy with a little romance thrown in to keep things spicy and the pages turning. The Lies That Save Us is the first book of The Broken Heart Series and was available as a free promotional download for Kindle on Amazon when I caught it. The series revolves around a FBI Agent Max Menetti and his team. The Lies That Save Us stars Max's daughter Alexa and his teammate Cayman in a whirlwind of confusion, chaos and conspiracy. The Broken Hearts series is "mystery- suspense romance," and my warnings fall in line with the genre. There is a lot of action and graphic violence in the portrayal of that action. However, there is no graphic sex. There are some steamy make out scenes, but the one and only sex scene in "The Lies" is not graphic.
The Broken Heart Series: Book One: The Lies That Save Us (Cayman) Book Two: Solitary Tears (Patrick) Book Three: Veiled Secrets (Sam) Book Four (Sequel to Book One) : Softly She Leaves (Max)

This is an awesome story full of secrecy, mystery, romance and drama which starts at the beginning of the story until the very end. After suffering the loss of her father at the hands of her ex-husband, Alexa moves to the quiet small town of Startup, Washington, where she purchases a diner and tries to put the past behind her. She become attached and look forward in the visit of Keith, an elderly person who appears poor and a father figure to her. A handsome mysterious stranger named Cayman walks into Alexa's life, she is forced to confront the ghosts and mysteries from the past.Alexa starts seeing her dead father and starts to get freak out. She knows it is him but he is dead, she watched the casket go in the ground. Unknown to her, her father asked Caynan to look after her. The real plot revolves on an album of pictures shot by her father during their last outing and attempts are made by unknown elements to take away the album. During the twists and turns the story takes a turn for the worst the drug cartel is broken taking down top-headed people. I didn't feel the connection between Alexa and Cayman to investing their relationship. Overall, it's an engaging, entertaining novel that is worth the read.
Alexa's world was turned upside down when a year ago she lost the two most important men in her life, her father murder by her fiancee and her her fiancee spending the rest of his life in prison.
She decided to moved far away from everyone and everything. When she open her own diner in a small town, she had vowed never to trust more less to fall in love, ever again.
When Cayman Richard walked into Alexa's diner, he knew what he had to do. He was send to do one task, and one task only, but when his eyes met Alexis eyes he knew he had a huge problem seen his task thru.
When weird things started to happen, Alexis knew better not to trust anyone, especially Cayman. She found herself trusting him eventhough "accidents" happen to her when he was around.
Alexas and Cayman know there is chemistry between them, but can they throw cation to the wind and let their feelings run wild and free?
Will deception play a huge part on keeping them apart?
If you are looking for a thriller, this is your kind of story, it is full of action.
Alexa is still mourning the death of her father,as she builds a new life as a diner owner in Washington State. Her life is turned upside down when a stranger enters her diner, bringing spies, lies, deception and desire. Cayman Richards, special ops agent for the FBI and has secrets of his owns. Alexa and Cayman are attracted to each other, but Alexa knows Cayman is not being truthful. Together Alexa and Cayman try to figure out her father's code and get it to Washington DC to a specific agent. Nothing is what it appears to be, as they fight to stay one step ahead of a drug cartel that took her father's life. You really have to push through the first part of this story, it is slow as Cayman and Alexa start their journey. Its the second part of the story when Alexa is kidnapped from the airport that the story becomes interesting and the pace picks up. The secrets and truth is revealed as the head of the drug cartel is exposed as one of their own.
Alexa had lost everything in a moment, her father and her ex-fiance. Feeling lost, Alexa found herself in Standup, Washington starting new with a diner she bought and a promise to herself never to get close to another man again. That is until Cayman walked into her diner, he was persistence in trying to get her to date but she refused. When she finally relented it was like her world exploded, now someone is out to get her and she is finding that the father who she loved was not quite who she thought he was. Everything is not adding up though, could Cayman be part of the group out to get her or is it just coincidence that he came into her life?
Exciting cat and mouse suspense. You know something is not right but the talented JL Redington leaves plenty of crumbs to keep you guessing until the end. I thought this was a terrific read the chemistry, story and mystery all kept me entertained, anxious to read the next book.
Well that was rather intense. Nail bitingly, edge of your seat brilliant. There's romance, hot sex, a hot alpha male who has more secrets than Area 51, a sassy female and gun fights. What more could a girl ask for from a book? Nothing much that's for sure as this one ticks all the right boxes. Now it does seem kinda slow at the beginning but it doesn't take long to get really into it. Also don't do what I did and try and figure out what the male lead, Caymen, is up to. You will never get it. It can also get a little confusing as you can't keep up with who is the bad guys and who are the good guys pretending to be bad guys, but it will all become clear eventually. Really enjoyed this one, it got my heart a flutter and my nerves on edge, definitely a re read and looking forward to reading the next book in the series. 4 stars
This book had my undivided attention from page one. I read the entire thing in just a couple of hours. Mystery, suspense, love...what more could you ask for? Alexa was a great, well developed heroine with a wicked sense of humor. I'm a little confused though...did I miss a part somewhere that pertained to what happened to the ex that was supposedly charged with her father's murder?? My only complaint is I would have loved to know more about Cayman's history. He was a huge character with nothing more than minor details. Other than that, I loved it. A couple of typos and grammar errors here and there but nothing major. This story will keep you on your toes from start to finish.
