Julia (she/they) is now a full-time student at the University of Guelph, majoring in Environmental Sciences. Although her pursuits in creative writing have been put on hold, she hopes to continue writing in between her studies. Julia remains a lover of the written word and hopes to release novels in the future. They are an environmentalist and intersectional feminist, and are dedicated to constantly learning. Julia's debut poetry collection, "For You," was written in high school and is no longer available for purchase.
I truly don't know how to begin with this review. I just finished reading For You and I really need to let it set in. I've been wanting to start getting into poetry and I'm so happy this was my first taste of it because it was a whole new level of experience for me. The way Julia can weave words together to create an impact that reaches deeply into your soul is incredible. The poems in this book walk through the trials of growing up in such a beautifully raw way that everyone can relate to. At the same time you're able to see the world through her eyes and I found that invaluable because some of the topics I either hadn't experienced or had only seen from one point of view. After reading this book I am able to truly understand what it's like to go through these kinds of situations and will be more open minded about them in the future.
I'm going to share a short section from one of the poems that I thought was particularly beautiful:
"I don't get it. Why are we playing a game of tag we have no intention of winning. We're just running around in circles Fast enough to feel dizzy, But too slow to collide."
I actually had the privilege of hearing julia perform her award-winning poem "Monsters" which is featured at the end of this book and I knew right then that she truly had an incredible talent with words. Her poems embrace subjects that many would consider taboo however I think this gives them a whole new level of rawness and relatabiliy. Overall, this book gives you a whole new take on the human experience and really drives home the fact that you never know what someone else is going through. I would 100% recomend this to any experienced poetry reader, someone just trying to get their feet wet, or anyone who just wants to expand their point of view. I can't wait to see where Julia's writing goes from here and I hope to see some more work from her very soon!!❤
this book is no longer produced, yet i was given the privilege of reading this poetry book by Julia Galvao.
I don't think this is a bad poetry book, but I also wouldn't necessarily say its a great poetry book. For when this book was writen it is quite impressive. There are alot of filler pages within the book that have very short peices of poetry that I feel don't exactly fit, and almost feel like there wasn't much effort put into them. As for the longer pieces I enjoyed the majority of them and thought they were good.
overall it was a pleasant read, I'd give it a 3 and a half stars if I could.
