No, it wasn’t what I expected. It leaned a bit more on romance and magic than I would have liked. The basic storyline was good, but it sure took a long time to get there. I think careful editing and deletion of some of the conversations is warranted. All in all, it was a decent story, just not my type of thing.
Did you ever ponder if someone who has magic could stop a super volcano like Yellowstone from erupting? Or maybe that idea intrigues you? If so you should read this. Not only is it an incredible story but its filled with facts too... Its obvious that the author had done some big research before writing this, so you can learn all sorts of cool (or should I say "hot as magma") facts about Yellowstone and the magma under the park. Being the volcano junkie that I am, I already knew this facts - but its great fun reading them in a story.
Even better yet is the story in here. I am happy to say the characters and the plot pulled me in right away. This is a very long story so I couldn't read it in one sitting - besides I had other things to do too. But I kept coming back to this very eagerly to see what would happen next. The only time I read something else was on Thu morning when I went to the ranch. Its a 45 minute drive and I dare not take my Kindle with me so I was reading an actual paper book in the car. But once I was home and reading time came, this is the one I was reaching for.
I really liked the characters in here. Alexandra the wolf researcher and Adam her former boyfriend. Then there is Emily her friend who works at Yellowstone and there is Adam's brother Nathan... Of course there are a lot more characters than this but they are the main ones. The various relationships between them is a big part of the plot. And yes, there is definitely trouble between Alex and Adam.
How do you tell someone you have magic, that you can control the elements? That is the problem that Alex has. Not to mention she doesn't even really want these powers but unfortunately she has them. And even more disturbing is the fact that Yellowstone is acting up. That park is always rumbling. And sometimes is she gets upset things happen... Like a pipe bursting to burn someone. Should someone like that really be going to Yellowstone??
Now before I started to read this I was pretty confident that Alex would somehow save the park. The book description reminded me of those disaster movies from - when was it - the 2000s - that a handful of brave highly skilled people would risk their lives to do some new fangled very risky thing to save the world. And no matter how dire the situation looked you knew in the end they would succeed. So that is what sprung to mind. And so I decided to read this. Mind you the very idea of some super volcano erupting most definitely scares me bad. As in BAD. Anxiety. Yet for some reason this book didn't give me any anxiety at all. And I think that is because I was confident it would all end well like those movies..
Was I right? You will have to read it to find out.
But there is action in here. Lots of action. Danger. Lots of natural threats of various kinds. And in the background the volcano is growing more unstable. And then the race is on to see if magic can beat the volcano... And there is a lot of magic in here... But its also looked at in a very logical way. No fantastical unicorns or pink ponies or that sort of thing. Its magic but practical. There's talk of pressure and elements in magma and types of magma too. And if you know anything about Yellowstone than you know about that very explosive rhyolite! Uggh.
I had fun reading this. And even at the end I had no idea how it would end.
There is only one thing in here that I do not agree with. If you look at the other cover image you see it.
The plot also covers some very new processes that scientists are trying to do with volcanoes. Should they be trying that? Probably not. It certainly seems very risky.
But this story kept moving and was never boring. I certainly enjoyed it... Its quite original too... It also talks about fate. Are certain people meant to do certain things??
A great character driven story! I definitely recommend this one!
I feel like the book just dragged on and on forever. The last few chapters were so hard to get through. I just felt as if the book should have ended a lot sooner than it did. A book about Yellowstone? Great! Throw in some magic and it just got to the point of being too much. I mean, yes, this is fiction, which I love...but I found myself thinking how ridiculous some of the chapters were. Overall, it was okay....I just wasn't a big fan.
