i first encountered Drop-Out when one of my best friends recommended it in a server four years ago. at first i wrote it off – not because i thought it looked bad, but because i was a mentally ill 16 year old and didn't think my attention span would be reliable enough to get through it. i tentatively checked out a few pages, though, and before i knew it i was refusing to put it down until it was complete. i absolutely HAD to know what would happen at the end ASAP.

since then, it can't be overstated how much of an impact this comic has had on me. it's been so formative to me as an artist, particularly in the writing of its characters. my review here will list only two reads, but that's just because they're the only dates i'm confident about. it's absolutely been more than that over the years, both in full rereads and revisiting specific scenes!

times change, and i'm way different than i was when i was 16. i was a little suicidal at the time (though i hesitated to identify with the word in fear that i wasn't enough to count), but that was nothing compared to my adulthood thus far. in this sense, as well as understanding it better in my more mature age, i think i love Drop-Out a little more every time i read it. the topic matter is quite heavy, and it is very frank about it – but if you can handle it, please consider giving it a read.

This story could've been a depressing and nihilistic journey, it could have so easily been that with a premise that it has but it isn't. And I think that's why this story is really really special to me. It's a powerful, unflinching, and honest work about queerness, mental illness, trauma, guilt, suicide, and other things. Yet despite the theme of the topics it grapples with, it manages to not feel like... nhilistic or uncaring and is written with this real sweet genuine heart that I really appreciate. In this comic there is genuine heart love and care put into it. It's something really special and seeing Folie grow and evolve artistically throughout the comic is REALLY great and cool to see.
Reading it definitely put me into into a headspace tm at points but like.... finishing felt like a deep grout clean of my brain in the good way.

Heavyy read. Great art. Great story if you are able to deal with the subject matter. Probably not a great choice to read right before bed, but it was mentioned in the Genius lyrics page for a CSH song, and I’d already read 8 pages bc an artist I follow made fanart, so I just finished it.

Sous le titre, il y a l’avertissement : “strong content warning for themes of suicide and drug use”.
