'BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR.'

These seemingly innocent song lyrics are about to send Detective Jason Smith over the edge.

Still traumatised after a harrowing trip back home, Smith is sent headlong into the stuff of nightmares when he returns to work. When a woman is found dead with her spinal cord severed Smith and his team are thrown into the most disturbing investigation ever.

Then another body is found and when Smith realises what this woman was subjected to he knows he's on the trail of the most sadistic killer he's ever come across.

All clues point to a death metal band.

Wishbone are in town for a few shows and when Smith realises all the murders bear striking similarities to their song lyrics he starts to wonder if there is something more to this band than meets the eye.

This is the most horrifying case of Smith's career and one the people of York will never forget.

After reading English at 3 Universities and graduating from none of them, I set off travelling around the world with my wife, Ann, finally settling in South Africa, where we still live. After Ann dropped a rather large speaker on my head I came up with the idea for a detective series. DS Jason Smith was born. Smith, the first in the series was finished a few months later. 3 years and 8 DS Smith books later, Joffe Books wondered if I would be interested in working with them. As a self-published author, I agreed. However, we decided on a new series - the DC Harriet Taylor Cornwall series. The Beekeeper hit the shelves and hit the number one spot in Australia. The second in the series, The Perfect Murder did just as well. The third in the series, The Backpacker I have self-published and is now available.

WISHBONE (A DS Jason Smith Thriller Book #15) by Stuart Giles is the latest thriller/British police procedural with DS Jason Smith and his family back in York from their trip to Australia and trying to return to normal. Five-year-old Laura is still traumatized, DC Erica Whitton is not yet ready to return to work, but Jason cannot stand another minute of leave. All the books in this series can be read as standalones, but I know you will want to read many more.

DS Jason Smith is on the hunt for a sadist killer. He comes back to work with his team and is called to the scene of a woman found in her bedroom with her spine severed in two places. Then a second mutilated body is found. As Jason is at the new murder scene, he is called back to the station to hear a story from two members of a death metal band called Wishbone. At first, it does not seem connected to his present case.

Then a USB is anonymously left for Smith at the police station which seems to connect the sadistic murders to the disturbing lyrics of Wishbone’s songs. Smith and his team work to uncover the clues to lead them to a sadist killer who could be a fan, roadie or even a member of the band.

I read through this DS Jason Smith thriller at warp speed! I was glad that Mr. Giles exposed Laura’s continuing problems which are from her time in “Australia” and did not just gloss over the realistic expected trauma. Smith is his usual workaholic self, and this case throws some very gruesome crime scenes his way. The violence in this book is graphic and not for the faint of heart, but it does not feel exploitive due to the subject matter. This story, like all the other DS Jason Smith thrillers, is fast paced, well plotted and gives a thoroughly satisfying conclusion.

I highly recommend this new thriller in the series and the entire DS Jason Smith series!

Horrible murders are being committed. One woman is found beheaded. Another woman is found with her spinal cord severed. Yet another is found with a hot poker sticking out of her eyeball. And the worst to date .. a woman is found in pieces, stacked up like a giant jigsaw puzzle.

Detective Jason Smith has returned to duty sooner than thought, after suffering a traumatic trip back home with his wife, Detective Erica Whitton, and their young daughter, Laura.

While Jason's thoughts swing wildly between job and family, he's determined to stop this killer from taking any more lives. The only clues available point to the Death Metal band, Wishbone. The band is only in town for a few days and time is running out.

Although the 15th in this series, this is easily read as a stand alone. I've been privileged to read the entire series and it seems like each new book is just that much better than the last. The suspense starts on the very first page and maintains a light level throughout. Action abounds within a well-plotted story like. The characters are solid and I really liked seeing the professional blend with the personal lives of Smith and his family. The conclusion came fast and was totally unexpected.

Many thanks to the author / Books n All Book Promotions for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

An exciting cover and title which just pulled me in straightaway! Then once I had read the first few chapters, I was completely hooked and finished in one sitting.
Wishbone are a Death metal band, playing at student gigs with dazzling theatrics as a background. The band make some profound references to the state of the world, suggesting something like a revolution.
Four women are brutally killed and all four murders are linked to the lyrics which feature on a Wishbone EP. There is a wonderful scene where Smith and his team go undecover at a gig!
There are some gruesome scenes, which gave me goosebumps, but they are relevant to the plot. You can't have murder and Death Metal without some horror! Give it a go, you won't be disappointed.

I do love Jason Smith and this latest is just as good as I’d hoped! As always, so fast-paced and well written with sharp witty dialogue and characters you just can’t get enough of.
Again, the author has managed to come up with an interesting and different storyline while continuing to develop the characters.

" Be careful what you wish for"
Detective Jason Smith Book 16.
Smith and Witton and daughter Laura are still getting over their trip to Australia its been a month and Smith thinks its long enough and is aching to get back to work.
Jane Simpson a beheaded victim is found in Leeds, but Smith and Bridge doubt anything that exciting will occur But a headless woman is nothing compared to the nightmare that was about to hit the city of York.
Wishbone the death metal group after Leeds are playing around York starting at the York student union they are no ordinary band.
The book goes on to find three more murdered women that are all linked to the lyrics of the death metal band and are five tracks on the Wishbone EP so who will be next?
There are lots of suspect so you must keep reading on.
Who is going to be Damaged.
This book is sick to the core in places and not for the faint hearted, you read some gruesome states imaginable, the murderer is one of the most freaky disturbed hardest person imaginable, you will never smell Kouro's aftershave the same again.
the work of a seriously depraved individual killing four women.
Oh My God it's so hard hitting and this is all I can say. It definitely will churn your stomach.
This author has put so much work into this book and has hit hard chapter after chapter well done.

WISHBONE presents a horrifying, gruesome discovery. A blood curdling, reprehensible incident follows. There seems to be a mysterious correlation to, not only to another event, but to a macabre group of people and their equally bizarre activities. Suspense skyrockets after heart-stopping evidence comes to light. The unfathomable conundrum grows until it explodes into a dynamite finish.

‘Wishbone’ is the sixteenth book in the bestselling series featuring Detective Sergeant Jason Smith. I haven’t quite caught up with all the books in the series but I am slowly getting there. I read the synopsis for ‘Wishbone’ and it certainly sounded like one hell of a read and then some. I couldn’t wait to start reading so without further ado, I grabbed a cup of tea, grabbed my Kindle and settled down for a thrilling afternoon of reading. I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘Wishbone’ but more about that in a bit.
What can I say about Detective Sergeant Jason Smith? DS Jason Smith is an Australian born detective, who was sent to live with his Grandma in York following a tragedy in Australia. Smith and his Grandma had a very tight bond but sadly she died a while ago. Smith has stayed in York ever since although he did have an eventful trip to Australia in a previous book, which he is certainly never going to forget. Smith is married to a member of his team and they share a young daughter. The relationship hasn’t always been easy but they seem to muddle their way through. Smith is certainly a determined detective, who leads from the front. He wouldn’t ask anybody to do anything that he wouldn’t be willing to do himself. In fact he would probably put himself in harms way if it meant saving a member of his team from harm. Smith is a detective who gets results even if he does bend the rules ever so slightly in his pursuit of justice. Smith is loyal to his colleagues as they are to him.
It took me no time at all to get into ‘Wishbone’. In fact the fact that Stewart’s name was on the cover was enough to grab my attention and draw me into this compelling story. To say that reading ‘Wishbone’ became addictive is a huge understatement. I would pick the book up only intending to read a couple of chapters but I would become so wrapped up in the story that I would still be sat there reading over a dozen chapters later. I had to keep reading to see if Smith solved the case and if he managed to stay in one piece to the end of the story. For me, ‘Wishbone’ really is the true definition of an unputdownable, page turner of a read and then some. I was gripped by the story from start to finish and on the edge of my seat throughout.
‘Wishbone’ is superbly written but that is certainly true of all of Stewart’s books that I have had the pleasure of reading and reviewing to date. He certainly knows to grab the reader’s attention and he reels the reader in, much like a fisherman reeling in a catch. For me, the story hit the ground running and maintained a fast pace throughout. Reading ‘Wishbone’ certainly felt like being on one heck of a scary and unpredictable rollercoaster ride with several twists and turns along the way. The series featuring DS Jason Smith goes from strength to strength and just gets better and better.
In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘Wishbone’ and I would recommend it to other readers. I will certainly be reading more of Stewart’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

This is actually the fifteenth book in the brilliant Smith series (it’s a long story but don’t panic that you’ve missed a story!!). DS Jason Smith is an Australian who has lived and worked in York for many years now and is part of a loyal established team of detectives. These include his wife DC Erica Whitton, DC Yang Chu, DS Bridge, PC Baldwin and their relatively new DI, Oliver Smyth who is the nephew of their complete buffoon of a boss, Superintendent Smyth. Smith and Erica, together with daughter Laura now aged 5, have their feet firmly back in York at home with dogs Theakston the Lazy Bull Terrier and Fred the Ugly Pug, and I doubt they’ll be going away again in a hurry after the shocking events of the last story which left Smith injured, Erica in a coma and Laura badly traumatized.
Successful Death Metal band Wishbone are on a tour of student union bars and pubs. They have just played Leeds and their next gigs are in York. Their set consists of gruesome lyrics together with a stage show or film depicting the grisly story of one of their songs and they are a huge hit. Smith is bored at home and itching to get back to work, especially when Bridge visits him at home and tells him about a case in Leeds where a woman was found decapitated. This news also has a blood curdling effect on the band’s guitarist who realises he had been with the woman shortly before her death. When a woman is found dead in York with cuts top and bottom to her spine, Smith is eager to get stuck into the investigation but soon he’ll wish he hadn’t. His first day back involves the discovery of a second bizarre and brutal murder. A good suspect appears but Smith has his doubts and believes all three murders are connected but struggles for that one thing most important to him – motive. So will Smith find the reason behind the murders and make the connections to the band in time to prevent more killings? A band with tracks like Sever The Spine, Fear Of The Light and much worse?
Each story in this series, one of my absolute favourites, just gets better and better! The characters are so familiar now that they're more like family and as a reader you find yourself really caring about what happens to them. Their seamless interactions, teamed with little dashes of humour and a clever absolute corker of a plot, all go to produce a winning combination. This is a thoroughly engrossing read from start to finish as Smith and the team battle to protect the people of York and find the key to these baffling crimes. I can’t recommend this entire series enough! 5*

Stewart has done it again. Another fantastic read in the DS Jason Smith series. After a traumatic visit back to Smith’s homeland Australia he and his family are trying to settle back into their lives. Unfortunately there’s a gruesome killer at large who is horrifically killing woman by copying lyrics of a death metal band. A hard hitting thriller that will grip you from page one.

Smith is back it is like visiting with an old friend. I have followed Smith from a wayward teenager and watched him grow and develop into the brilliant detective he now is. He has grown up it took a while ha ha. So now we have book 16: Wishbone and before I started reading I had to wonder what Stewart Giles had in store for him this time. As always I wasn't to be disappointed it is another adrenaline pumping addition to the series.

Smith, Whitton and Laura are all recovering from their traumatic holiday in Australia and Smith and Whitton have not yet returned to work. But we know Jason Smith he is climbing the walls so it is time for him to get back to doing what he does best: tracking down and bringing to justice the criminals of York.

First body is the horrific discovery of a young woman who has been murdered with a violence that York has never seen but more is to come.

As the investigation progresses it becomes clear there is a definite link to a Death Metal Band named Wishbone. But is it a fan or the band? With very few clues around the team has their work cut out trying to find out what is going on.

Another absolutely brilliant, adrenaline pumping story from the brilliant Stewart Giles guaranteed to have you on the edge of your seat all the way to an ending you wont see coming.

DS Jason Smith is itching to get back to work after enforced leave following their traumatic trip to Australia where he and his family were all injured in more ways than one. Wishbone is a DM group touring the country. Their music and performance focus on shock factor- one part being a “ beheading” on stage. When a woman is found with a severed spine, her surgeon estranged husband is immediately under suspicion. Thirty miles away there has been another deranged killing. What is the link to either the surgeon or the group? Meanwhile Smith’s daughter Laura is getting more and more withdrawn from her experience abroad. Smith is adamant that she should not see “a shrink” as he put it, whereas Whitton, her mother, thinks this would be the best thing to help her through her traumatic experience and potential PTSD. (thank you for addressing this Stewart- PTSD/c-PTSD are much misunderstood illnesses) I love this series, despite the gore (just the very occasional brief description) these reads are ones you can easily settle into and disappear - hours disappear as the pages turn so very easily and I find myself immersed in a different world.
If anyone can take you away through a book it’s Stewart. Thank you. Another stunning 5* read.

Back from their horrific experience in Australia Smith's daughter Laura is haunted by her memories. Smith needs to get back to work to help him keep his mind off his. A spree of demonic killings in York does just that.

Smith is back at the top of his game in this latest page turner.

A killer uses death metal band Wishbone's lyrics to kill his victims in a horrific way. DS Jason Smith is back from a traumatic vacation so can he stay focussed and find the murderer before the next lyric is brought to life (death)...?
Wishbone is the fifteenth novel to feature DS Jason Smith, his wife DC Whitton and the rest of their team. Smith and Whitton's personal life is in turmoil following events in the previous book (which I have somehow missed :( ) and there are major spoilers so I would advise reading the series in order.
I literally devoured this book. It is gory, gruesome, grisly and VERY graphic but I just couldn't put it down. The murder methods and forensic details are described in detail and they are horrific.
Smith and Whitton begin the book on leave, recovering from events in Australia. But Smith is champing at the bit to get back to work and this case needs his expertise. Women are being killed in a way linked to song lyrics from a death metal band (not a genre of music that I was really aware of, and not one I'll be following now!)
The pace of the plot is completely relentless and this is a real page turner of a book. There are not many suspects to choose from, unless it is a deranged fan, and the police are anxious to get ahead of the killer to prevent any more sickening murders. Our witnessing of the lyrics ramps up the anticipation of the murders which we then experience too, dreading what we know will happen but unable to tear our eyes away from the page!
Despite the grisly crimes and the worry over Smith's daughter's mental health, there are touches of humour such as when Smith and Whitton attend a death metal gig and wry comments about their superior officers.
Wishbone is a brilliantly gruesome police thriller and I absolutely loved it!

So I'm working my way through this series and I can't really get past a 3⭐ rating but each book is a quick easy read
I've found very little in the way of character development even with the main character except that he is getting to be even more of an arrogant a**ehole as the books continue
No respect for any authority and he is the only person to be right and really, getting through a bottle a day is his way of dealing with things 🤔 in the real word he would either be dead due to a failed liver or a raging alcoholic
It would be very refreshing for him to remember there is no I in team, oh and he is a s**t dog owner and his garden must be just one pile of dog poop as they never go anywhere else except the garden and their bed or the couch
Anyway...... easy reading for now even with it being predictable and boardering on boring, the mainstay for me is Whitten and she needs a medal

Darkest of the series by far. I'm reading them now, but I'm not sure how many more ways to murder someone there can actually be. Lol if you like a dark, crime novel then this is the one for you. The only downside for me is the repetitive Information in each book, like who DI Smyth is to the Super, who Brownhill was, etc etc I get why it needs to be mentioned since every book can be standalone, but from the POV of someone reading the books 1 after the other then it kind of gets a bit monotonous, but that's my fault for binge reading.

Yuck!! No, not the story but the murders are the most gruesome yet! Poor Jason and poor Whitton and Laura as they are having time out after the activities in Australia. And yes, Jason lands up going to work. Deaths associated to a heavy metal group called Wishbone, hence the title.
We are also privy to the problems Laura is having readjusting after her ordeal.
The red herrings, the humour, the camaraderie, the feeling as if you are part of all their lives makes this yet another brilliant read.

Yet another great book by stewart

This is book 16 in the series and they keep getting better and better. It's advisable to have read the previous ones but is still possible to enjoy it and catch up without having done so.

This one follows a serial killer who seems to use a band's EP as a motive to kill people in more deprived ways.

We follow smith and the team as they try to unravel what looks like completely unconnected murders to solve the mystery

OK.

Fairly ordinary, written in simple English as if for a young teenager. Very flat, no emotions or personalities on display.
